I'm the owner if any if you guys have any questions. Little back story on this ...the day before, I finished the car about an hour before we had to leave for Gridlife. Issue was I had been chasing a boost leak which ended up in the damn TPS sensor (first time i'd ever seen such a thing), so RVT to the rescue! It was a 6 hr drive and half way through I realized I'd forgotten my Carbotech pads, which sucked hard as I wanted the car to be a perfect performer. The plan was to swap them before the review as they make a lot of noise, dust, and cold they're not so good on the street. Matt of course was briefed on this before taking the car, so there would be no surprises. It was unfortunate it didn't go entirely as planned, but I loved the fact he was still so enamored by it. This is a street car first and a track car second, however it does get used properly and often. It has seen only 1 track day so far (Road America) and about 4 auto x's since I've owned it. I purchased it bone stock about 2 years ago.
Love him or hate him his reviews are really popular and I was really excited he agreed to do this car. My mom actually told me she thought he was cute, so he's got that going for him. Matt has my dream job, so whether you like him or not, more power to him to actually make some good money doing it. Personally i like his "everyman" approach to car reviews, and i think that's why they're so popular. It's pretty surreal watching this now as I've been watching Matt since the beginning and never thought he'd be sitting in anything I'd ever build.
@Skyler Blizard: You sir are a true moron. Point by's are mandatory for HPDE and friendly gesture for a faster driver behind you. @Tyler Reed that thing was quick, I was in the Integra that he pointed by in the end.
Car was awesome, Tyler! Definitely a memorable experience and I had a ton of fun. It was really just a set of pads and a couple bottles of brake fluid away from being a monster on the track, and as is, probably makes a great street car. Thanks for letting me have a go!
The guy in the background taking Matt's photo. lol Matt's a celebrity! Seriously, I think a lot of everyday drivers could learn some manners from a track day. Getting a point by when you're the faster car is just a courtesy. Some day, I would love to ride with someone on a track that knows what he or she is doing. Better yet, I'd like to build my car and have that driver show me what it can do and then learn to match it.
Absolutely loved my 2003 WRX. And that STI wheels STI brakes STI suspension STI turbo with full bot ons and some other goodies made 330 wheel horsepower And was super goddamn fun
Do you mean between when it was filmed and today? Or do you mean from taking the error file down at 6 AM this morning and getting it back up before noon?
Awesome video Team TST!!!! Makes me want to figure out how to get my hands on one. It looked like with more brakes that car could be a real track star. It was interested to here a Subaru that never mentioned understeer the entire time. That speaks for itself and to the fact that you can sry an AWD car up to handle properly on a paved race track to all of the haters of anything other than RWD. Don't get me wrong RWD lends itself most to going fast in the dry around a racetrack but again that doesn't mean an AWD car can't be tuned to handle as well if not better.
swapped the trans to a Prodrive unit with torsion front LSD which helped along with ALK and sways...it was pretty decent, but still understeered like a bitch at low speed auto-x's vs my other bug with v.8 trans and dccd...DCCD is the game changer, no comparision.
Hey Matt, I know you said you're done with Subarus, but one day when I finish it it'd be pretty cool if you took a look at my 5 speed wagon. Currently building a "Frankenmotor"-high compression N/A 2.5 with 2.2 ported and polished heads (opinions vary but these heads make for a compression ratio between 11:1 and 13:1), Delta cam regrinds, port-matched intake with phenolic spacers, stainless unequal length header (can't give up the rumble in the name of a small amount of power), lightweight pulley and flywheel, and a standalone ECU. Plus will have some suspension stuff but some will be Subaru OEM from other models (currently installing a '91 Legacy turbo steering rack, 15:1 as opposed to 19:1 for the Outback for ex). This engine was the original EJ25D from the car, but it has a stock EJ22 swap because the 2.5 toasted a rod bearing back in June, which I'm rebuilding on a stand in the garage.
corvettels9 Good effort, anyone can appreciate somebody else's passion. But that sounds boring. Strap a turbo to it and get some real power, otherwise you're throwing money into an engine that doesn't make much N/A, and like Matt says, will be another boring Subaru
Emil Gorecki Emil Gorecki Yeah, a lot of people say that. I wanted to do something a little different, and if I was going to go turbo I would just WRX swap it. The 2.5 needs a crank (~$300), rods and pistons should be fine, dual-port EJ22 heads are $200 for the pair (the 2.2 I have now has single port heads), cam regrinds are $75/cam plus shipping to Delta, manifold spacers are $75 for the pair, I already have a good header, pulley and flywheel are about $150. The ECU will probably be the most expensive at about $700, but excluding that I can build a stout, quick-revving N/A mill for about $1000. Besides, 2.5D's don't like boost because of the open-deck case halves. Figure it'll make about 160 wheel horsepower (180-190 crank hp), and the wagon only weighs about 3000 lbs. I'm not looking for 500 horsepower, just something that will go, turn, and stop decently well on a budget, and surprise a few people every now and then. I took part in a 5 car race across a 3 mile bridge when the EJ25D was stock apart from the header and an Exedy clutch...a WRX, STi, and a BMW pulled away from me but I did keep a car length and a half on a lifted modified Duramax at over 110 mph with myself and one other person in the car.
Dylan, my advice to you, as I have a buddy doing this right now, is to scrap that idea. You're going to be in for so much more money playing with that 2.5 than going the all-motor route with a ez30r or 36r and running it on a standalone Hydra ECU. I actually have two Hydras on hand if you're looking to pick one up, as I am planning on going this route on my wagon. The ez30r which is plentiful on ebay and can be had for about a grand with e85 and bolt ons makes about 300whp with no internal mods to the motor. This setup you're talking about now will cost you about 3-4 times the price and only net you about 200whp on a good day. Just my .02 :)
Tyler Reed My name's Matt and I hear you, although it's definitely not going to cost what you think for my Frankenmotor build. I already have a good block to start with, good pistons and rods, can probably salvage the crank if I bring it to a machine shop, and if I feel like going the single port route I already have EJ22E heads (but I want dual ports). But even the Frankenmotor was never the endgame for the car. When I get bored of it, I'll rip it out, put the Frankenmotor in an old Super Beetle, and put an EG33 in the wagon. Eventually, the EG33 may even receive boost if I feel extra insane.
thought the same...and that guy is a pro driver too. It's absolutely incredible what the GD chassis is capable of basically stock with bolt-ons vs a full blown race car
Forget the fact that it has a STOCK top mount cooler that’s let say will max out at 340-360whp but nothing on the fact he has “1000cc” insjectors with one 255 fuel pump hard to believe especially if he runs e85 with 22psi
I have the exact same JDM V7 Sti but a Wagon also in Blue. "very very good, super impressive" "what a beautiful little driving car, its fast, it handles well" - Matt Farah. I brought the right car haha.
Damn Matt! Back at it again with the fresh reviews! Just when I thought I'd never see another STI on this channel, another one pops up. On a somewhat unrelated note: I recently started working at a Subaru dealer, in the maintenance department, and my manager and I were discussing potential plans for the 2020 STI. He swears from higher ups that he's heard it'll get a 3.6L Turbo V6 (notice I said V, not flat) and I hope (and pray) that it'll be a 2.0L Turbo H4 like the modern WRXs, but with more power. What's everyone thoughts on this? I'd be pretty upset if Subaru started jamming V6s into STIs myself. That simply isn't the way of the STI, and I feel as if most owners/enthusiasts would agree. I don't even want a H6, I'm hoping for an H4. The STI is bred for rally, and due to rally regulations most of their engines (even Subaru Rally Team USA) are 2.0L EJ20s. Don't do what Nissan did to the GTR, keep it true to its roots, just make it better.
The V7 EJ207 came with full forged internals while the V8 EJ207 came with hypereutectic internals. The cast pistons in the jdm v8 Sti are still stronger than the usdm Sti's though. Both the v7 and v8 are great engines!
it is a v7 sti engine, came with uel headers, but in the mod list says they were swapped out for equal length, v8 and v9 sti had twinscroll turbos which got rid of the uel header, but the 8k redline stayed for v7 to v9
You say you're done with Subies. If you want to ever try another one, I'm a first owner of a 2007 Legacy SpecB. I can meet you somewhere in Westchester even though I live by Saratoga Springs. Only 300whp, 220ft of torque though, but would be fun on the Merritt.
Best sounding Subie I’ve heard. But seriously, 420 whp with crap pads and fluid, ouch. First thing I did was tires, then suspension, then brakes, and now I’m in the middle of a power mod. You can use a sporty street pad on-track just fine, but they need to be cooled, hence my deleting my fog lights for brake cooling ducts, instead of dropping $500 in pads, just so that they can chew at my nice rotors.
Engine sounds much livelier and just smoother to redline than the US spec car (big surprise, our versions usually always sucked by comparison). 400-425 is real respectable and probably will keep the breakage down a bit. If that's where its going to live a lot, brakes for sure, car is way to fast for those stockers.
420hp looks legit as you were keeping up to 911... for 10 to 20% of the price tag. Also 22psi is safe boost for E85 you still have room to 25 or even 30psi to push 450 to 500hp
400 - 450 HP is a good number for this motor. More, and you have to think about serious upgrading the internals, like rods, pistons, bearings, valves and lifters.
This car is registered in Canada or USA? Bugeye STI is on my list for a car in the next couple of years. Man, Matt is having a LOT of fun in this one haha. Good stuff.
Yeah, USA is 1992 and below at this point and Canada is 2002 and below. I've seen a few bugeye STI's here in Edmonton and they definitely look good. The tweaks to the front fascia look good compared to the WRX.
Bradley Comis I'm guessing he means it is here and a trailer queen for all intents and purposes. Since it was brought in the US before the 25 year mark, it'll never be legal here. He probably trailers it everywhere for track events only. The DOT and EPA both have sections on the legality of bringing a car in for off-road use. One of those rules is, the car may never land in a US junk yard. It must be sent overseas to be junked, fully destroyed, or completely brought to US standards before entering a US junk yard.
Stock Ver.7s are a bit like Evo 4s. Out of the crate they're a bit soft and could have done better, but a few good tweaks will bring them alive. The EJ20 and 207 engines are just miles better than the EJ25 as well, and that 207 sounds bloody good for a Scooby, especially coming up to redline. I hear so many EJ series engines where I live and the majority all sound like shit to be honest. Oversized exhausts with massive rice cannons hanging off the back scraping on every driveway, gets a little old, especially on BD and BE Legacy twin turbo models (As I walk through the shadow of the valley of death between the two turbos switching over)
I'm the owner if any if you guys have any questions. Little back story on this ...the day before, I finished the car about an hour before we had to leave for Gridlife. So was yours man...awesome car!
EJ207, arguably the best engine Subaru ever produced
David Handler no arguing it is the best
its iconic . its in version 6 sti
Yea especially the v7 sti with ej207 actually come stock with forged pistons apparently
Ej2 no shit
@@coopsnz1 the v6 one is meh.
the v7 and up are great though
Hey Matt, Sorry for riding your bumper in the Integra, but thank you for the point by good sir! Fun times!
serr38 watched a buncha your vids. Nice integra
Thank you sir! I have my in car video of this session and I took a triple take because I didnt realize it was RHD lol!
@thatfeel Here is the view from my car th-cam.com/video/9uLjMkcb5no/w-d-xo.html
Did a Subaru really just get Matt Farah to say "Ai papi"??
Dan's the Man was thinking the same thing
Dan's the Man i
420 is always a good number, Matt!
I remember when i was 14 too
Dylan Marteen my fav number
+Hello Bye Last year wasn't that long ago
Flame
I don't.
this "bugeyed" model is the best looking of all the impresa models IMO ^^
Who elses opinion would you have?
In Australia the not popular, why sti version sell under 8000 usd here . blob sti your looking at 11000 usd for are shit heap
i agree iris!!
I love the bug eye but I own and love a blobeye
That's what us JDM consumers have enjoyed for years quality STi cars
Australia and new Zealand
UK & Singapore & the caribbean also lol that RHD life
Basically everyone but the US😭😭😒
That is the best sounding Subaru I've ever heard.
It is . Sadly your tough emission laws wont allow it in the states
its in my car
This is my dream car absolutely love the Bugeye STI and the EJ207 😍
Perfect amount of power ! Always loved balanced builds
'Ay papi!'
That track looks like a riot
I could really get a feeling for the boiling intensity of the car. Great video Matt. Props to the owner for such a clean and dialed example.
Ej207 v7 ftw! Forged from factory and can take a beating stock! Awesome car
this car probably looks like the most fun drive of any ive seen him do on this channel
I just love the front end look of the Bugeye's, my favorite Impreza generation.
The guy in the background taking Matt's photo. lol Matt's a celebrity! Seriously, I think a lot of everyday drivers could learn some manners from a track day. haha that's me.
I'd be doing the same if Matt drove my car! lol
Ver8 207 / 4.44 swapped my daily driven bugeye. Absolutely love the way it pulls with a 20g on e85
Awesome that Brad Bahr tuned this! He tuned my car (JDM EJ205) too, as well as pretty much every Subaru in NE Wisconsin.
That's a badass little bugeye!
Just when I though I was out, they pulled me back in. Sopranos fan!!
Absolutely loved my 2003 WRX. And that STI wheels STI brakes STI suspension STI turbo with full bot ons and some other goodies made 330 wheel horsepower And was super goddamn fun
You want more brakes than power when on the track. Seriously, a set of rotors and track pads and it will be a super fun track machine
This thing is done so right! Not over the top and looks amazingly sick
Never be "Sorry" always be "Careful" .
Glad you had fun
Matt saying spanish words in a jdm car, this is definitely a good one take.
i put a ej207 ra- sti - jdm - spec C - short block in my 2001 forester ! = stinking fun car !
Pre 2008 Subies can be the best choice for a track day or Time Attack weapon
One of us, one of us
What's going on with Matt practicing his Spanish? Is he planning going to Mexico or something? 😂😂😂 breaks are "In fuego! 🔥"
Ah yes! Been waiting for this video ever since Tyler posted something about you on Facebook!
Video mad my morning better, Subaru addict here.
Sounds kind of like a small prop plane, interesting... This car seems super dialed in! Lots of grip and balance in the corners.
Great vid dude! I'm a fan an it's the first time I see you rocking that Spanish. It must have been a treat!
I know this video is old but we actually did get a 2.0 turbo in the bugeye wrx it is the USDM EJ205
Matt is in a really good mood here
It really is JDM.
I believe the JDM v7 steering rack is 13:1 which is why the steering is soo good on this one.
"I'm over here now". It feels like a Dice reference and i'm gonna take it as such.
May I ask why the reupload took so long? What was the process like acquiring the footage and getting it uploaded?
Have a great day!
Do you mean between when it was filmed and today? Or do you mean from taking the error file down at 6 AM this morning and getting it back up before noon?
Getting it back up. Love your videos by the way!
Matt aint shit. Fat flubbery flubber flub. Cockiest cookie monster in the land. Where art thou manners you pork platter pendajo pinata party
EJ207 is a godly motor for sure, i cant wait to swap a version 8 into my GC
That sounds so nice. I like it better than the UEL manifold sound.
Great car - hope they pull you back in again soon.

EJ207's are awesome, not bulletproof by any means but way more robust than the engines we got in the U.S
pretty tough... in v7 they got strong
Seem happy driving this one
I gotta do Gridlife someday!
Este Tipo , siempre IMPRESIÓNA. Y ahora hablando Español. Bien!
Tmr 993 GT2 video coming up be waiting for that
Hey Matt, I know you said you're done with Subarus, but one day when I finish it it'd be pretty cool if you took a look at my 5 speed wagon. Someone needs to get Matt a built SVX.
instead of ipecac?
You should keep the windows down all the time Matt. Or put the microphone by the exhaust so we can hear the exhaust note.
Sick! If it wasn't for the brakes you could have kept up with that Porsche!
If it wasn't for the Miata pulling over in front of Matt he could have kept up with that Porsche a little longer.
Bricklinsv1970 That GT2 sounds good!
I agree ;)

Skip to 5:24 if anyone watched the initial upload
Nathan Jones Thank You!
Bug eyes are my favorite. Would love to import a JDM Bug eye STi down the line
MATT: Put a VR style clip of driving these cars! Talk about a unique experience.
WTF that was a LS 86/BRZ XD!! You should give that sweet piece a few laps next, lol. I'd love to hear your commentary on that.
No annoying ad! Yes!
I much prefer the TRACK one takes. Love it.
cant drive on usa roads , why track review
I have the exact same JDM V7 Sti but a Wagon also in Blue. "very very good, super impressive" "what a beautiful little driving car, its fast, it handles well" - Matt Farah. I brought the right car haha.
no kidding...pics?
What a nice sounding Subaru!
And now your host for The Smoking Tire, John Davis.
Damn Matt! Back at it again with the fresh reviews! Just when I thought I'd never see another STI on this channel, another one pops up.
On a somewhat unrelated note:
I recently started working at a Subaru dealer, in the maintenance department, and my manager and I were discussing potential plans for the 2020 STI.

Matt Farah and this car are basically a Western-ized version of Fujiwara Bunta!
Bugeye Sti is the best! Comes with the jdm ej207 V7 with forged pistons!
blob sti does too
The V7 EJ207 came with full forged internals while the V8 EJ207 came with hypereutectic internals. The cast pistons in the jdm v8 Sti are still stronger than the usdm Sti's though. Both the v7 and v8 are great engines!
Thats pretty fucking dope!
I'll take the 8k redline over the uel rumble any day
Americans are missing out . Does anyone have are 8000rpm on there rs-ti ?
Ben Chesterman we really are.
I do, ej207dw4cr from a ver7 sti. UEL and 8k redline
it is a v7 sti engine, came with uel headers, but in the mod list says they were swapped out for equal length, v8 and v9 sti had twinscroll turbos which got rid of the uel header, but the 8k redline stayed for v7 to v9
Props for not attempting to change gears with the blinker stalk!
lhd gives me brainfart
Go JDM WRX.. the only way to go!!!
Sounds so different! I like it!
I have the same model Subaru not as much hp but i will not sell it. Just an awesome joy ride
You say you're done with Subies. If you want to ever try another one, I'm a first owner of a 2007 Legacy SpecB. I can meet you somewhere in Westchester even though I live by Saratoga Springs. Only 300whp, 220ft of torque though, but would be fun on the Merritt.
this car sounds exactly like the japanese spec subaru impreza RA-R wich is japan only. amazing!
Oh man, this really makes me want to ej207 swap my bugeye.
I love it!
best sounding 4 cil. boxer ever
You have a lot of driving experience . I'm jealous

reminds me of my friends 04 scoobie. same amount of hp through the normal exhaust..470 with the dump pipe almost 700nm of torque
Give us more of that Spanish, it's awesome
yooo beep beep vroooooom!
wrxxx!
7th generation?
That looks awesome for 99,000 kms on it for being a 2001. :)
Mathew Dice Clay? "Oh I'm ova here now! Agegegegegeee!!!"
Hickory dickory docks,
I GOT A JDM GEARBOX! OH!!!
Matt enjoying driving a subaru :P
good lord nothin gets me goin quite like a subaru
Matt "speaking spanish" is the funniest shit.
Ohh si!! Más Subarus, Matt por favor.

why do you guys get to have to 2.5L :(
420hp looks legit as you were keeping up to 911... for 10 to 20% of the price tag.
Also 22psi is safe boost for E85 you still have room to 25 or even 30psi to push 450 to 500hp
cams will give out
400 - 450 HP is a good number for this motor. More, and you have to think about serious upgrading the internals, like rods, pistons, bearings, valves and lifters.
This car is registered in Canada or USA? Bugeye STI is on my list for a car in the next couple of years.
Man, Matt is having a LOT of fun in this one haha. Good stuff.
Bradley Comis that's my question too. Isn't it too new of a JDM car to be registered in the US? I'm sure it's fine in Canada though.
Yeah, USA is 1992 and below at this point and Canada is 2002 and below. I've seen a few bugeye STI's here in Edmonton and they definitely look good. The tweaks to the front fascia look good compared to the WRX.
its got no rego
"its not no rego" What does this mean? Complete sentences and full words are your friends.
Damn! Even the battery is JDM @1:09
I hope that was a Dice Clay reference. "I'm over here now!"
Whose integra tho!? Thing was ripping!
Oversized exhausts with massive rice cannons hanging off the back scraping on every driveway, gets a little old, especially on BD and BE Legacy twin turbo models (As I walk through the shadow of the valley of death between the two turbos switching over)
We did get the 2.0l EJ205T in the U.S from 2002-2005 in the WRX. We did not get the 2.0L JDM EJ207T from the JDM STI. CLARIFICATION...
