Hoonigan, for the sake of all of us, PLEASE get this guy back for an episode of Build Biology. I would love to see this looked over to that level of detail, id love it to be even more detailed still, however i don't think too many would agree on that.
Build biology is for the nerds like us that want to see the detail so I agree, make it as detailed as humanly possible and I’ll watch it. The abridged version can go on in the normal DT
This guy is the king of DIY. Seriously incredible work. “If I don’t know how to make something I meet someone who does and I have them teach me.” That’s the best shit ever. I’m so inspired to do work on my pile to turn it into something great
Same thing Henry ford used to do, one time in one of his press conferences he was asked what something was made out of he said hold on let me call someone up, the people looked at him like he was nuts he said if I don't know how to build something I have someone else do it for me. Even the best don't know everything
@@Max-dr5wq lol I know! I mentioned that in my comment, once you hear him talk about it it's clearly a labour of love. He is just so monotone and unenthusiastic when he speaks!
This dude is a genius. Built most parts himself, installed it himself. 400+ hp, and he says it gets around 30mpg. My mind can't fully comprehend how awesome all that is. The amount of detail is off the chart!
He is saying ~515 at the wheels with the LS3 and cam. The 30 mpg isn't hard to believe considering he's barely above idle at 60 mph in 6th gear. To the guy slamming him, you don't seem to know Jack shit to be making claims against his. Sounds plenty legit to me, mpg is aided tremendously with gearing and driving style.
Its all that aero. If it was just the stock body and no undertray and no splitter it wouldn’t get that mileage. It might get 25 if it didn’t have those things.
You can actually see that Kikawa is totally impressed and he is into the build. I mean who wouldn't be into this beauty. Seriously one INCREDIBLE build. And it's LS powered. Even better.
there was never much you could buy for the Conquest/Starion. Over 4 model years, they built less than 50,000 of the things. John's is the coolest of them!
M L, the closest I came to having one was a Conquest head shaved .060 on one of my '76 Colts (I swapped in a 2.6 from a Caravan, and 5-speed from a Challenger). Being as the block was a flat top, and this was the old dish piston head, premium only.
Sometimes you hear someone speak and you just know the guy is smart as hell. John is that guy. What an amazing build and car!! Favourite DT featured build for sure!!
The amount of respect i have for this guy is unreal! To build something this insane, from the ground up pretty much by himself, not to mention he designed and manufactured 99% of the parts on this car is just inspiring. Love it!

That’s hands down the most impressive build I have seen on this channel. If he wasn’t getting paid big bucks already, I’d tell you guys at Hoonigan to hire this man.
DAMN!!! One of the cleanest, sickest builds I've ever seen. Especially considering it's home built on a relatively small budget. This dude is my new hero. I love it when engineers build car, you know EVERYTHING is going to be well thought out and purposeful, and they can't leave anything alone. This thing has more engineering put into just the front bumper than 99% of "tuner" cars that show up to Cars & Coffee. Also, it's PERFECT that this has an LS. An LS is ALWAYS the answer. No better way to get big power and reliability on the cheap.
Johns car is generally considered the most awesome starquest, its the epitome of built not bought. There are other awesome starquests out there too, some track only, others fully street legal. I have 2 of them, one stock, one that looks pretty stock, but its so very not stock. My 86 shoots flames out of the hood, which makes it the funnest car ever.
This guy is inspiration to me, I've owned the same old Integra for almost 5 years now and it doesn't look like much but I've literally done everything my self, built aero for it, swapped engines, wired the car, etc. and there's just something about that feeling when I'm ripping it down a back road or on the track that feels like nothing else in this world.
My buddy has a conquest,a 1983 conquest that he is selling for a 1,000 because he no longer drives it. He's put a lot of work into it and I plan on buying it to start cruising in it and to fix it up.
This is easily the best DIY build I have ever seen in terms of performance, quality, and reliability. Great job John! The automotive industry needs more people like you!
Starquestclub FTW!! I remember watching johns post of him custom making everything, while looking at my stock quest dreaming id be able to build such a sexy quest!!

This Gent is a Hero to me for sticking to his dream/vision all the way, he is in the Category of "When Engineers build unique stuff that probably no one has ever made". Respect Sir!
Sick, sick, sick build of a car!!! Having owned a couple, I'm just blown away by all the customization and labor that was put into this car. Absolutely amazing!!! I bow down to you John!
I wanted to hate this car, because it's another LS swap. While I get that LS swaps give a reliable, lightweight, small engine that makes absurd power, they've become so common that it's more impressive and unique to see an original (or same-manufacturer) engine build these days. I also get that in Cali the e-rod LS3 is a CARB legal swap that is great for a lot of people to stay compliant with emissions. So I kind of went into this video wanting to hate another LS swap, but jeez, give this guy props. This is an amazing build. Wow is all I have to say. Just WOW!
JoMaHa The thing is, this was done way before LS swaps were a common thing to do. There's other engines he could have bolted to the stock transmission, but would have costed more and pushed the stock transmission to the absolute limits when pushed passed 400whp. What's cool is he's built a few things for the guys in the community. He had the widebody fenders for sale, and even had 2 spoilers for sale. A drag spoiler and another spoiler which extends the stock ducktail hatch spoiler that he ran for a bit between running the GT wing.
I would've liked to see a 4G63 swap; but this car is beyond Dope,LS swap or not. But I look past and even appreciate the swap on this car; this machine is phenomenal!
Mitsubishi doesnt really make an engine that can reliably make the power and torque the LS does. They can make the power, but they wouldn't last 5 or 10 years on 20 or 30 psi the way he thrashes the car, and a 4 cyl sounds like shit compared to a v8. Plus its a track car, so an all motor smooth power and torque delivery is way better for grip than a 4 cyl that has boost come on at 3 or 4 thousand rpm.
I get your point about LS swaps being common, but they're common for a reason. You actually listed all the reasons, and when building a car, it's got to be hard to look past all that, especially building on a budget. And with the owner/builder being a GM employee, it's pretty fitting that it's LS powered. Plus, he's an engineer, so he's going to look at all the numbers and other factors. When you factor out wanting to be "different", LS is usually the way to go. Considering how many vehicles GM made with LS based motors, you can find them all day for cheap money, and even running, driving LS powered vehicles (I see a lot of cheap 6 liter 00's Denalis, for instance) for just a few grand. Not to mention the GIANT aftermarket for them. Now if I were building a hot rod or something vintage and going for an old school look, I would not go with an LS. However, if performance is the goal, it's hard to beat them.
I’m a full on stance kid and more into drifting than grip but this car had my mouth on the floor. From the brake ducts to insanely smooth tubs. This is my favorite car I’ve seen on here no doubt.
That thing is so sick. I've always loved the Conquest TSI and this is the logical conclusion of its styling. So glad to see it carried out. The plans for those fenders should be made public.
@Hoonigan why you don't start the "LCS" - Loud Car Standings Buy a sound meter and for every car that shows at the shop you measure the decibel. Probably this will win.
No way, the E30 was loud but this Chrysler is even louder. This car has almost broke the mic, the audio was inaudible... The E30 was loud and you can actually hear the sound, this not. If the used the same mic, this is louder.
Hands down the best build I've ever seen this year. The amount of detail and designing to make it functional yet beautiful is absolutely staggering. The best part is when you see the wheels spinning. Those are beautiful. Very beautiful.

YO! Having this much rad cars, you should put them up on the lift, so we can see under them aswell! I heard him say its all flat underneath, but thats bolt on/off for service. Always. Please *bowing down on my knees* consider that for future videos?

400... definetly not 500. He said it was at 400, anything more is a lie. 30mpg? I sincerely doubt that.
Anukloses why would he have to lie about something like mpg.....when something’s built correctly, it’s not too hard to believe.

Should have EVO or a rotary. Would be 10 000 times cooler.
bergrud not really, most of its cool factor most definitely came from the body work.
There are currently 84 people that aren't. Bergrud is one of them.

This guys car made me fail no nut November
It was well worth it tho
5 star build!!! that is by far one of the coolest cars you have displayed on the channel! I actually appreciated every second of this video!! This car is very very very well designed!!
the starion and the second gen supra always get me. i just wanna grease up and rub myself all over their perfect sharp angles.
This is one of the most insane builds I have seen. And the owner seems like a really cool guy -- and kudos to a patient and supportive wife, haha !
He built his carbon fiber stutt, and I'm whining cuz I'm going to single fuel pump and relocating the fuel filter on my 85 LTD 5.0! Now, I gotta put a No Crybabys sticker on the bottom of the car to remind myself! Thanks, John! LOL
This car is so awesome. The owner did a heck of a job on the build. Much respect
Favourite cars from the 80s is this and the s12 silvia
This dude and his car are legendary. Epic build. My favorite DT so far.
this is the nastiest car ever to come on DT huge respect!
This has always been the most flawless and balanced car I've ever seen. I love it, it's absolutely perfect.
YO! Having this much rad cars, you should put them up on the lift, so we can see under them aswell! I heard him say its all flat underneath, but thats bolt on/off for service. Always. Please *bowing down on my knees* consider that for future videos?
Glad to finally see a Starion on the show. Ever since I fist saw one I've wanted one.
Have a beer with this guy!!!
Best build I've seen at the warehouse thus far! Looks perfect!
