Thought I'd spend my 10-minute cycles providing some notes/observations/protips here. My scenario: Just got into a used 2021 Traverse that came with two key fobs, only one of which worked. Miserable dealership experience and, regretfully, I'll be avoiding going back there like April 2020 COVID. Observations/pro-tips re: this wacky process: 1. Too many commenters here are asking about the programming of a second fob. It was a missed opportunity for this valuable video to not address this second-fob audience in the intro, when our guy says the video is for those who have lost both keys. It would also would have been worth emphasizing that you can't just "add" a key via this process--you're gonna be reprogramming your working key in order to get both to work. A demonstration of a second key getting programmed directly after the first might have also been helpful here. All this said, this vid is awsome and THIS WORKS! Big props to anyone who nails it in one go. 2. About 5 seconds after each "Remote learning pending, please wait" messaging, the display goes dark. Nothing will display even when you close/open doors. Not until that exact 10:00 mark. 3. During your 10-minute waits, take the opportunity to imagine what might be going on over at the GM mothership in Motor City, USA. For example, I imagined lab mice running feverishly on their wheels to power the going ons in an adjacent control room, from which several men and women with headsets and matching uniforms pressed blinking buttons and turned knobs as fast as their hands could go, their eyes darting intensely from monitor to monitor, bloodshot from blinking only at 10-minute intervals. These men, women, and mice were doing God's work, I imagined, with one common destiny: MUST. LEARN. NEW. REMOTE. FOR TRAVERSE. 4. I noticed that during this process, my other original remote was already bricked early on, well before my new key was programmed. 5. In my first effort, the unprogrammed key got programmed, but my new Key #2 (formerly my working key), did not end up getting programmed. I believe that I neglected to press the Unlock/Lock before exiting the learning mode. This mistake is costly as it caused me to have to start from scratch. Don't screw it up. No pressure. 6. In my 3rd attempt, I succeeded to program both transmitters... but not without the car alarm sounding between them. Fortunately, the final step only takes ~15 seconds and you should be able to turn off alarm with newly-programmed fob as you exit programming mode, before the spouse or neighbors get too upset. 7. Our remote start button still doesn't work on either fob but I think it's because the car doesn't support it. Likewise, the comments here re: different fobs linking to seat memory seem relevant only to those whose doors have the 1/2/3 buttons, which our car does not.
I paid someone 60 bucks to program a remote I got off of Amazon and only half of it worked. I told them and they said it was because the remote came from Amazon so I tried the instructions on this vid and it worked. I did have to do it a second time because I didn't read the info on the second fob but all is good. Thank you for sharing this info
This works follow it step-by-step. I lost both the remote keys to my 2020 Chevy traverse. I went to the dealer and purchased a key and had it cut at the dealer and then I purchased two remotes from Amazon and I was able to program both remotes following these same exact steps thank you so much for this information.
Thanks so much! This was easy to follow and worked perfectly on my 2020 Chevy Traverse. Those greedy jackals at my local Chevy dealership wanted to charge me an extra 80 bucks to pair my spare fob to the vehicle as if the 300 bucks to buy and cut it wasn't enough.
Great instruction. NOTE that I bought a knockoff key off eBay, and my traverse didn't recognize it. Fortunately, I only needed a new key because the buttons had worn off. I ended up moving the insides of my old key into the new shell of the knockoff key, and it worked. Just be aware that knockoff keys may not be able to be programmed in this way.. The key I bought online didn't have the golden Chevy Bowtie on the back..
This was really helpful. A note I might add after trying on a 2019 traverse. He doesn’t mention leaving the key in the driver door. I enabled theft deterrent lock because it I took it out. Leave it in the door until the last step, and do not put back into the fob until after the 12 second button hold at the end. Process is outlined in the manual as well.
The key doesn't need to be left in the door for this procedure - I usually take it out. Its just a standard metal key with no chip - the vehicle cannot detect it. You are correct though that the owners manual covers this procedure as well
Holding down the stop/start button for 12 seconds should allow to then start the vehicle but you will need to program a second remote in order to fully exit programming mode on a 2021 Terrain.
Thank you so much for the very clear instructions. Upon extracting the key from the fob, I have discovered that both the fobs I have are uncut! Are you aware of any alternative process I can follow? Thank you again
Hi great video, please here’s my question: I bought traverse 2018 from someone who gave me only one key (keyless) he lost the second one , so I bought new transmitter (new key) , shall use this video to programme the second key, thanks in advance.
On a 2020 Traverse - the vehicle will not exit programming mode after reprogramming only 1 key. It shows "ready for remote 2" every time I get in. Is there a way around this, or do I need 2 fobs?
So I lost my only keyfob to my car. I had 2 new ones without the emergency keys reprogrammed. They I found the original key fob with the metal key. It doesn’t work now. Can I reprogram it with your above instructions without screwing up the 2 spares I have?
Thanks for the video! Does it work only with after market key? I have the original key for 2019 Traverse that I changed the battery and won't work now. Was hoping these steps fix it.
You can use this procedure, you will just need to re-program in your old remote as it will be erased when you program in your new one. If you look at the steps in the description box, or in your owners manual, you will repeat steps 4-6 for your old remote after you program the new one in.
OK question I have a 2018 Chevy traverse and I just got a brand new key for it and when I get in the car, it says key fob three and I need to switch it to key fob one for the memory seats. How do I go about doing that? Please help me I’ve been looking everywhere.
Yes, you will just need to re-program in your existing smart keys as they will be erased during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video, you will repeat steps 4 - 6 for each existing smart keys after the new one is programmed.

Thank you for your Video I have a 2018 Traverse and suddenly like 6 months ago the right doors (front and rear) are not working to unlock via the sensor. Drivers side is working as usual. This happens to booth of my remotes. Booth remotes have a brand new battery. Any hints of what will be the problem? Greetings from Monterrey México
Hello One of my keys worked and the other had no battery. I bought a new one and did all the steps you mention in the video but now neither of my two keys is recognized. What I can do?
I bought a 2108 Chevy Traverse. It is push button starting and I am reading your instructions online and found this video. Do I follow Programming with Recognized Transmitters or Programming without Recognized Transmitters.
If you have at least 2 working fobs then use the "Programming with Recognized" if you do not have at least 2 working fobs then use the "Programming Without"
So I just bought an 2020 traverse ls. It does not have remote start. They sell the remote start fobs at the dealer. I I buy those fobs could I use this to activate the remote start on the traverse or would the dealer still have to do that.
This procedure should program factory remote start fobs, but you need more than just the remote start fobs in order for the remote start to work. You would need the whole remote start system installed on your car first.
@@PYR-Auto I confirmed it with the dealer it has everything installed. They said they need to add a code to the computer to activate it. Was just wondering if this procedure is what they do.
@@PYR-Auto I confirmed with the dealership that my Traverse has remote start through the VIN after the service dept guy told me his wife had the same model and had remote start setup by purchasing the FOBs for them to program. I purchased the FOB on my own and programmed it using the instructions with my original FOBS in my possession, but the remote start isn't working. Is there a way for me to remove the new learned FOB and try to redo the process?
Also, must the key that's placed in the keyhole be a key from the new FOB? That is one thing, I didn't have the key to the new FOB cut and used the key from my original FOB.
if two separate fobs stopped working at the exact same time it may be an issue with the vehicle itself rather than the fobs - not sure exactly what the issue may be though

@@PYR-Auto thanks. Wound up calling Pop-A-Lock. Had no idea that they offered all of those services. Had a bad key fob from the dealer and bought my correct ones. He programmed them and cut the keys right from his van and left the original one programmed since my vehicle allows for 5 keys to be programmed. I'm a happy camper!!!
I have just picked up my 2019 Traverse from the Chevy Body Shop after some repairs were done, and now my Driver 1 key fob (the one I use) has suddenly become Driver 3, which means all the memory settings assigned to Driver 1 (seat and mirrors positions) will not be recalled automatically when I get in my car as these are only assigned to Driver 1 and 2. Will I be able to reprogram the key fob back to Driver 1 with this process? Note: I still have the Driver 2 key fob (the one my wife uses) THANK YOU!!!
using the procedure in the video will erase all the fobs and the order in which your program them back in will determine driver #. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the second remote after the first one is programmed.
Yes - you will just need to re-program your original fob during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.
Do I need to cut the second key if I still have 1 original? Can't I just program the original key first then program the new spare fob right after? No need to cut the spare fob then.
I just have one question. My girlfriend just bought a 2018 Chevy traverse and she was given two key fobs one works and the other one has not been programmed so if I do this procedure will it cancel the activation of the key that already works.
Yes - the original key fob would need to be re-programmed during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the original fob after the new one is programmed.
Actually on my 2018 chevy traverse premier, on the last step I had to leave the key in the console key slot for about 5 seconds until the display read "ready for key 2" and then remove key and press lock or ulock button.
I have a 2020 Chevy Traverse with 3 fobs. 1 works the other two need to be paired. If I follow the procedure above will I have to do it 3 times to get all three fobs working? Or is there another pairing method for adding fobs
They all need to be programmed at the same time. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for each remote after the first one is programmed.
I am looking to add a 2nd key but haven’t got the new one cut can I use the emergency key from my original key to do the first steps or do I need to get the new one cut first?
Yes, you can just use your original emergency key. You will need to re-program your original remote during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.
You can use this procedure you just need to re-program your original remote during as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.

We were given 2 fobs with our 2020 traverse and have since lost one. Where do I buy one to program it and do i have to reprogram the one we do have afterwards?
I would recommend bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes to buy remotes. Yes, you will need to reprogram your original as well. Here is a video of that being done on a GMC Terrain th-cam.com/video/EhTc_aD3Jvg/w-d-xo.html
Hey man I’m helping my dad and we have one original remote and we got a new one online the plan is to have both of them working at the same time is it possible?
Yes - you will just need to program both during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your old remote after the new is programmed.
Yes, it certainly is time consuming. It's mean to be that way for a security measure. Yes, a Scan is much faster. Also, if you already have two working remotes there is a different procedure that only takes a couple minutes to add an additional fob.
Just to be sure - this should work on a 2021 Chevy Traverse, right? Lost both keys in an area that a tow can't reach the vehicle *face palm*. I have an auto locksmith cutting me an emergency key/replacement fob. Hoping this hack gets us off the beach! :)
Update - turns out one fob will work, you can force the vehicle out of learning mode by holding down the start button for 10-12 seconds. The vehicle will start, however you will get a , "Theft attempted," warning and each subsequent time you try to start the vehicle it will be in reading mode (says "Ready for remote 2" so you have to hold down the start button again in order to start the vehicle). Eventually you'll have to get a second fob to stop that from happening, but if you're in a bind and need a quick fix 1 fob will work. Thanks so much for the information! :)
You can use this procedure you just need to re-program your original fob after you program the new one. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video, you need to repeat steps 4-6 for each remote after the first remote is programmed.
@@PYR-Auto after programming the first key fob the video shows you holding the start button for 12 seconds to exit the programming mode. Should you press the start button for 1 second to program the next key fob or just stick the next key fob in the slot and press the start button again ?

@@PYR-Auto no, it worked fine with the one that they lost and works fine with the original we still have. Just an issue with the newly programmed ones.
@@fignark If you are sure that everything is functioning on the car as it should be than it must be a setting - maybe a valet mode or something similar. But it should not be fobs themselves because the vehicle is responding by flashing the lights so you know the button is emitting a signal.

After programming my key fob everything worked on my key fob, but it won’t start the car. I can start the car with the key fob, but not by hitting the start/stop button. I tried to go back and reprogram, but it won’t give me anything on the screen anymore.
I have a 2019 Traverse and the key got stolen. I got another programmed but the day I was going to pick it up, the police recovered my original! The original no longer works....can I program my original with this method to avoid paying 300 for the new one!?
Yes, you can re-program the original. These fobs lock once but programmed but you can reprogram it because it is going back into the same vehicle the fob is "locked" to.
I'm having a hard time adding the second key fob. It says ready for remote #2 and it doesn’t add it. Any suggestions? Also I'm getting "anti theft deterrent message" how do I get rid of that?
If the vehicle isn't responding to the second remote, there may be an issue with that remote itself. Successfully programming a second remote should get rid of that message.
If both remotes are lost how do i get the new emergency key cut since there is no existing key to copy it from?... thanks for posting these videos, the service departments must hate you lol
You will have to get it cut by code. Dealerships and some Automotive Locksmiths have access to the codes. So the service department may still get you for a little bit of money to get the key cut lol but they charge additionally for programming
That procedure is similar to this one, but it is actually much faster. You can find the instructions for it here www.programyourremote.com/classified/2020-chevrolet-traverse-keyless-entry-remote-fob-smart-key-programming-instructions-listing-9854.aspx
Can this be done on one the dealer already programmed to make it driver 1 instead of the (nonexistent) driver 3? We were sold driver 2 fob but when they programmed the new secondary fob, it was programmed to driver 3 instead of 1.
yes but these key fobs lock to a vehicle once programmed and need to be unlocked or "flashed" by someone with the correct equipment before they can be programmed again.
You can use this procedure you just need to reprogram your existing key as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - You need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed
Your instructions were haphazard at most. I had to do a lot of trial and error to finally get it to work. Including unhooking the battery to reset the system. Be warned his instructions are not very good

you can use this procedure, you will just need to reprogram the original as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the original remote after the new one is programmed.
How do I get my key blank cut with no existing keys? Is there a key code that I give to the locksmith?
A GM dealership and some automotive locksmith can look up the key code and cut it by that
@@PYR-Auto thanks.
@@PYR-Auto thank you so much!
You're Welcome!
do you have to get the actual key cut in the new fob to program the fob or can I just use the key from my original fob?
you can use your original emergency key
Will this work to add a spare?
Yes - you will just need to re-program your original fob during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.
Do I need to cut the second key if I still have 1 original? Can't I just program the original key first then program the new spare fob right after? No need to cut the spare fob then.
yes - you would only have to have 1 cut emergency key
Great video explained really great thanks👍.
Thanks!
Where do you get the valet key cut
automotive locksmith or dealership
How do I program the remote for a 2015 Chevy traverse someone please help
I just have one question. My girlfriend just bought a 2018 Chevy traverse and she was given two key fobs one works and the other one has not been programmed so if I do this procedure will it cancel the activation of the key that already works.
Yes - the original key fob would need to be re-programmed during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the original fob after the new one is programmed.
If I change the key fob battery do I have to do this ??
No
Actually on my 2018 chevy traverse premier, on the last step I had to leave the key in the console key slot for about 5 seconds until the display read "ready for key 2" and then remove key and press lock or ulock button.
I did everything correctly and everything was working last night when I got back in my car this morning it would not start any ideas?
Same thing just happened to me. Car won't start, OnStar no help at all.
Had the same thing happen in my 2020 traverse. Did you ever figure it out?
What if u have a working remote and just want to add another one? What would be the process then?
You can use this procedure you just need to re-program your original remote during as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.
I lost one key fob, but i still have one. How can I program an aftermarket market fob for 2018 traverse?
If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for you original remote after the new one is programed as the original will be erased during the proceudre
What if you don’t have that pocket in the console?
Check under the carpet liner in the center console. That's where it was in my 2020 traverse
Will this work with remote start system part# 84649016 for the 2018 traverse.
Thank You in advance
Yes, it should.
Great video. While time consuming, GM gave the consumer a solution. I’m guessing a dealer can do it much faster with a scan tool
Yes, it certainly is time consuming. It's mean to be that way for a security measure. Yes, a Scan is much faster. Also, if you already have two working remotes there is a different procedure that only takes a couple minutes to add an additional fob.
@@PYR-Auto what’s 2nd fob
What if you only have 1 working remote. How do you add the 2nd one?
Just to be sure - this should work on a 2021 Chevy Traverse, right? Lost both keys in an area that a tow can't reach the vehicle *face palm*. I have an auto locksmith cutting me an emergency key/replacement fob. Hoping this hack gets us off the beach! :)
Yes but you will need to program at least 2 remotes total.
I have a question. Could I have 2 key fobs programed even though 1 fob is missing the key.
Yes, you would only really need 1 emergency key
If you have 1 keyfob and want to add a 2nd remote, do you follow the same steps as this video or is there another procedure?
You can use this procedure you just need to re-program your original fob after you program the new one. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video, you need to repeat steps 4-6 for each remote after the first remote is programmed.
@@PYR-Auto after programming the first key fob the video shows you holding the start button for 12 seconds to exit the programming mode. Should you press the start button for 1 second to program the next key fob or just stick the next key fob in the slot and press the start button again ?
@@LuisMartinez-xn9mu After the first remote is programmed, remove the first remote from the slot and place the second remote in the slot and then press the stop start button - repeat that step for any additional remotes, you can have up to 8.
Got a replacement fob for one a parking garage lost. Fully works with the exception of it not opening the trunk (pressing the trunk button makes the lights flash, but not open). They ordered a second one and same issue. Any thoughts?
That sounds like an issue with the vehicle itself rather than the fob - the trunk release latch or the actuators that open the trunk maybe.
@@PYR-Auto do you know if there's a way erase the programmed fob so I could try programming it again fresh, off your instructions? Thank you for the assistance, by the way.
@@fignark
You will have to program at least 1 fob to erase all the others. This procedure will erase all previously programmed fobs.
Thank you so so much yes it works good thank you again
You're welcome! Glad it helped
I did this, but the second time it did not appear on the dashboard?
I would recommend just going off of the time rather than the messages
How do you add a second key fob?
You can use this procedure you just need to re-program your original remote during the process as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed.
After programming my key fob everything worked on my key fob, but it won’t start the car. I can start the car with the key fob, but not by hitting the start/stop button. I tried to go back and reprogram, but it won’t give me anything on the screen anymore.
There may be an issue with key fob itself - was it new or used?
Did you ever figure this out? Having the exact same problem.
@@EthanMitchell33 I did not. My car is a lease so I took it to the dealership and they didn't charge me since it was under warranty
If both remotes are lost how do i get the new emergency key cut since there is no existing key to copy it from?... thanks for posting these videos, the service departments must hate you lol
You will have to get it cut by code. Dealerships and some Automotive Locksmiths have access to the codes. So the service department may still get you for a little bit of money to get the key cut lol but they charge additionally for programming
what if you want to add a 3rd key?
That procedure is similar to this one, but it is actually much faster. You can find the instructions for it here www.programyourremote.com/classified/2020-chevrolet-traverse-keyless-entry-remote-fob-smart-key-programming-instructions-listing-9854.aspx
The example vehicle is a Cadillac???
Yes - this same procedure works on many different GM models
@@PYR-Auto "The Pocket" on the new Chevy's is simply inside the center console at the bottom. There is no actual "pocket."
Can this be done on one the dealer already programmed to make it driver 1 instead of the (nonexistent) driver 3?
We were sold driver 2 fob but when they programmed the new secondary fob, it was programmed to driver 3 instead of 1.
Yes - this will erase all fobs from the vehicle and start from driver 1
will this work if you have a used keyfob
yes but these key fobs lock to a vehicle once programmed and need to be unlocked or "flashed" by someone with the correct equipment before they can be programmed again.
hopefully this gives me auto start!!
The remote needs to match your vehicles options. Your vehicle needs to have the remote start option for the the remote start key fob to work.
@@PYR-AutoCorrect!! Only GM?
Lost one key is the procedure the same
You can use this procedure you just need to reprogram your existing key as it will be erased. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - You need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one is programmed
Your instructions were haphazard at most. I had to do a lot of trial and error to finally get it to work. Including unhooking the battery to reset the system. Be warned his instructions are not very good
Dude he broke it down Barney style if you couldn’t follow these instructions you shouldn’t have the keys to any vehicle!!
Am I the only one that can’t get the f$&@? Cylinder cover off with breaking it?
