    EXTREMELY RANDOM OBSERVATION: So, I recently purchased Batman The Animated Series on Blu-ray, and I came to a shocking revelation. Batman has exceedingly poor Fight IQ! What's strange is that in my memory, I had the idea that Batman was more capable of avoiding extremely telegraphed haymakers etc, but he just eats them! Doesn't case every room he enters, has slow reaction speed...I think my memory may have been artificially altered because of a later series also from DC, Young Justice. In that show, there's an inextricable link between character, intelligence, athleticism, and somatic intelligence that informs their Fight IQ. For instance, there are several fights where a character is on paper underpowered to their foe, but through effective spatial awareness, understanding of physics, specific use of tools _in the right way_ with apropos reactions, they're able to overcome the stronger opponent, even by the skin of their teeth. It's actually pretty amazing in how the writers and animators have executed those values. That may be why I expected Batman TAS to showcase similar values in its depiction of combat. I'd recommend clips of the show for you to break down, but the show deserves to be seen in full to appreciate its fight's qualities. Ok, random rant done!

      I was watching the rocky movies again and rocky was eating huge punches that some literary knocked him for a loop.. When trainer said what are you doing he said it was part of his plan...when you learn how to fight (or watch UFC)you realise how stupid fights are in shows...in real life batman, rocky etc would have CTBI in their late 20s ...though I still enjoyed the rockey movies and batman :)

      @LupeJustinian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carlsmythe2540 that's the thing, though! Seeing Batman in later media like Young Justice or the later straight to DVD animated movies, he has near impeccable Fight IQ. I think Young Justice must have been particularly influenced by MMA, whereas BTAS predates the popularization of the sport. It doesn't explain Batman's poor grappling skills every time he gets cornered by a guy up a weight class though lol idk it just struck me as weird because of Batman's placement as a power fantasy of complete self-actualization. Intelligence x Athleticism

    That rural vs urban lifestyle difference is the very reason city dwellers see people from other places perform and presume they must be on steroids or "genetically blessed". They haven't seen people work to survive and therefore cannot perceive a human like them working hard enough to achieve exceptional results.

  • @HeartlessKnave

    I train everyday (includes an active and passive rest day each week) the ideal is 45-1h str/end/flexibility/cardio/foamroll&massage. 30-45 mobility/flexibility/warm up&cooldown. 30-1hr martial arts review. 1-2hr martial arts lessons. I rarely reach this ideal, but the accomplishment is in the attempt of the goal everyday, not succeeding in it everyday. If I was able to do it everyday, then I'd need to schedule for longer sessions or add more, if I reach the maximum of my time management ability then I'd need to train harder.
    You're definitely right that nutrition plays a big part. Few weeks back I kept being sore, burnt out, and would nap/sleep early. Once I got my macros sorted and off a deficit it made all the difference.
    I work fulltime and watch videos on TH-cam about Martial Arts, Fitness, etc. At work. I could be working hard and/or making more money but my job lets me have the life I want. I learned not to have a job that is dependent on your physicality, as when you get injured that will impact your livelihood/income.
    As I said to a coworker an hour ago after he told me I have to move things around in my life to facilitate work: "I work to live, I don't live to work".
    My job doesn't have me on a static schedule so I don't have Saturday mornings available to train with having slept/rested first all the time. So I end up going after having trained the Friday night before work and worked 8h. I train early am on Saturday until 11am-ish, sleep, wake up, train for 1hr & 1/2 at most, then go to work.
    Other times I get Friday night off and can sleep, at an unusual time for me, to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for Saturday morning, or have Saturday night off so I don't have as much of a time crunch and screwed sleep pattern. Either way I train with no excuses.
    If I eventually find this won't work and my job can't accommodate then I can drop it and find something that isn't morning training, which I'm not enjoying much anyway. However if my job won't facilitate what I want to train due to when/where it is, I can get a new job. Because what I am learning/doing is part of my career path, within the same industry as my job, and my company isn't providing opportunities for growth/development so why should I care about their needs if they don't care about mine.
    Some older people and employers haven't learned yet that it's an employee's market. Covid taught us that people don't have to take shit hours, at shit jobs, for shit pay and can instead go into business for themselves doing stuff they love to do.

    I would consider learning a marital art as a long term goal. Everyone has multiple long term goals, but some people want all of those goals to come to fruition at the same time. That is not reasonable. You will overload yourself. Sometimes it is better to set one dream aside and focus on another. Once that goal is achieved, then you can redirect your efforts. It is called delayed satisfaction. There is an interesting experiment called the marshmallow test where a group of children were given a marshmallow. They were told that if they waited five minutes without eating the marshmallow, that they would receive a second marshmallow. Most of the kids could not wait and ate the marshmallow after only a minute or two. Some of the kids held it together and got the second marshmallow. Be the kid who got two marshmallows.

    Hi, one idea (I never trained professionally, but I did run into the reality of cross training in two different martial art systems at the same time). One mistake I did was train in two different schools at the same time. If you fall into this trap, one opportunity for better results (especially in not being tired for work) is two train in a single system, or at least at the same gym/school that offers both grappling and striking and does a good job of integrating them both, both as a system, and in their training schedule. Not only might this cut down on your commute, but you might discover that some of your training might have been redundant.

    While I was working before the pandemic situation, I got up at 6, ate breakfast, prepared myself food for work, went to train bjj at 7 am, finished at 8, quick shower and went to work which luckily was close enough to my gym. After work I did another training and that depends on a day, some days I would to 3 training sessions, 1h each. On top of that I had my part time studies so yes I still had some spare time and I had enough energy to do all that. It’s doable but it’s tough and it’s not for everyone, neither all people should try because we’re all different but yes I did accomplish this and I went like that for months. I had one day off a week where I wouldn’t even move anywhere, just chill out, eat, rest and focus on my own things to do.

    I watched a video by Arnold Schwarzenegger on how success is really all about time management and never making excuses. Yes, I know, he was on steroids, but his words did strike a cord with me. He spoke of how he was training to be a bodybuilder, about how he would work a construction job for nearly half the day, then he would hit the gym for 2-3 hours. This in turn left him with about 9-10 hours for sleep. Yes, a schedule like that does do a number on your social life, but I believe it's better to work hard now so you can succeed later in life.
    That's why instead of lounging around on my days off while this God-awful quarantine goes on, I'm at home shadowboxing, hitting my heavy bag, meditating daily and watching Fight Tips. At night, I sleep like the dead.
    Yes, I'm well aware it takes a lot of work and time, and even this might not be enough, but I believe that when the time comes for me to fight my first Amateur fight, I will win.
    A great deal of it is just how well you manage your time.
    When my gym reopens, I'm going to start training very early in the morning, then eat a hearty breakfast after before I head to work. Balancing a day job with it is difficult, but it IS worth it.

    Hey coach, one thing missed was strength and conditioning. Which I know you are a huge proponent of. In the beginning it would be difficult, but would he have more energy by increasing his overall work capacity through strength training; therefor making all other movements easier to preform.
    Instead of doing two a days in grappling and striking. Do two a days of strength and technique.
    An example would look like this. 30 minutes of Strength in the morning mon/wed/fri. 30 minutes of yoga tue/thur/sat. 1-1.5 hours of grappling or striking class in the evening mon-fri. Resting begins after sat yoga through Sunday.
    If strength and stretching are not important to him what about this?
    Doing the one hour class of either grappling or striking, then training in the other for 30 minutes on his own. I.e. jitsu class 1 hour, hit the heavy bag for 30 minutes. On the next day Muay Thai class 1 hour, solo grappling flows or partner drilling 30 minutes. This way he could fully devote his energy to class, and then pace him self in the extra curricular training based on his energy levels that day. He would be getting some level of both striking and grappling everyday, but giving 100% to 1, and 50% to the other... yet training both 5-6 days per week.

    Roofing now for a company that want's picture perfect results. Also working as a main cook at a expensive eatery that gives an expectation of picture perfect cuisine. Hard labor and the heat of the kitchen. 14 hour days, you want to talk about being tired at the end of it. I do believe my last shadow boxing session was last Friday, and even that was only 10 minutes because I got too sluggish and don't want to blast out half an hour of bad form.
    Your story about the farmers really clicked in my mind, similar thought yesterday at the kitchen. I'v got to get up even earlier than I am now If I want what I want in life.
    Also, yes, rest days are the worst, expecially if you don't have a craft hobby or like to read, or follow someone awesome on youtube like Ramsey Danger Dewey! The mind will tax you harder than the body if let to wander unchecked and/or untrained. Advice for rest days. Excercise your mind, painting, writing, music, an art form that is less physically demanding is a wonderful use of time if find yourself getting jitters from being away from the rock and roll aspect of life.
    Thank you for the videos as always, RD.

    I have a question... How might your stance on rest/sleep (or anything else that you commonly suggest for that matter) be changed if you had a student whom suffered from severe bipolar disorder whom could not be medicated for it??? (Especially considering that slowing down for most people with bipolar disorder often means becoming depressive.)

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had such a student. She had a terrible sleeping schedule, was constantly sleep deprived, and she lashed out constantly to the point of being completely uncoachable. You can’t save everyone, no matter how much you try.

    • @Nuetral768
      @Nuetral768 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RamseyDewey In my case that's me... I don't lash out hardly ever (I found ways that help reduce that), but I struggle with the depressive side a lot... Exercise is about the only thing that helps, but frankly my body never can seem to keep up with my need for the endorphins and staying busy that exercise provides me.
      Sadly, letting go of people with bipolar disorder seems to be the popular approach... that is why I have previously made comments about some people needing to try to find happiness without other people... but, honestly, I think this just sets such people up to suffer worse and those that could have been benefited by what we might have had to offer to miss out. :(
      I don't really have any answers either, but I sometimes wish that society would either learn to accept us or make removing ourselves from society more possible... being stuck in the middle feels a lot like combining love and abuse at the same time and it makes everything so much harder than it ever should be for anyone. :(
      Anyways, thanks for the reply.

    I remember reading years ago that the majority of people with middle level management jobs spent their leisure watching TV., which surprised me, cos I supposed they would have lots of interesting hobbies and interests. I reckon a normal male person can only give their full attention to one thing. If you're doing all sorts of stuff outside of that one thing, you're obviously not giving 100%. How many guys are capable of splitting their attention like this. Not me. I pursue one interest at a time. The reason youth is a time to explore is that you have leisure to do so. And having done a management job, I can tell you it's draining, very draining. You're dealing with people issues most of the time. Upsizing, downsizing, unless you're a total psychopath it will tell on you, cos you're dealing with real people's real lives. How can I give less than 100% to that. Nowadays I'm out of the game. Retired. I return to my childhood pursuits, like Martial Arts and stuff. Just hope i retain my physical and mental strength. It's difficult to adapt but mostly so far I'm OK, I dread some life changing event that's gonna screw me completely.
