I learnt MA because I felt socially insecure and want to maybe have more confidence by being physically stronger. As I get better in boxing I don't feel any more secure or confident. Boxing only taught me to be humble realising the world is so much bigger than me and no MA can protect me from its harm.
Interesting realization. However, I would think that fighting skills would at least give one at least a little more confidence and protection but up to a point of course.

The weakness that scares me is being useless when a loved one is in danger. The possibility of myself choosing selfishness rather than selflessness. If I chose to let them suffer at the hands of an attacker just so I can escape. If I myself alone was threatened I think I could make peace with me being "useless" and running away. But the idea of seeing a loved one threatened and not even trying to help, that's what's strikes me to the core. Let's hope that situation never happens but if it does I hope that the right instinct kicks in even if it means my life is forfeit for the sake of another

I am a Christian and I've always liked watching your channel. I figured out why today. You have the fear of the Lord in you :) this video speaks volumes of truth. It's so important to navigate what it really means to be a man. We are all weak but God's strength is made perfect in our weakness! And his Grace is sufficient for us! (2Corinthians 12:9) God Bless you Ramsey! And thank you for sharing wisdom!
Because I am weak I know how I may fall, because I know how I may fall I gain the strength of knowing my weaknesses. That weakness lets me know what to avoid so I can keep the strength I have.
I've been reading "The Song of Achilles" with a group of friends, here in Brazil, and the human weakness is actually the tragedy of the book. To see that you're not a divine being, despite of what you do, you're human, and cannot be anything else. Anyway, this video came in a fortunate time.
"And if men come unto me, I will show unto them their weakness - because if they humble themselves before me than I will make weak things become strong unto them" can be used as a metaphor for personal development. For it is only when we learn of our weaknesses and become humble, that we may consolidate them , grow, and become better. You may not be enough on your own, sometimes you may have to learn from books, teachers or others. Sometimes you may have to become a new you who carries that piece of past self who was not enough. P.S. I apologize if my quote was inaccurate, from my understanding that is quite rude
I'm a big fan of captain america the first avenger because of the line, "A weak man knows the value of strength". I don't mind being weak, it means I can improve
Same and that’s why he’s my favourite Avenger. “And if I’m the only one so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not” is one of his best and most memorable quotes.
My friend, I know how you feel. I got jumped by 6 people and got degraded by a lot. You feel like your pride and honor is gone. It did me good in the end as I started doing MMA after that, plus strength training.
I'm barely at the introduction but I really want to say this: This person knows that even though they have trained in boxing, they are still outmatched by a group of thugs. That is admirable in my eyes; hotter heads would have let their ego overtake them. He could have ended up dead! But no, he let his ego slide and now he is alive. He is not weak or a loser. He is a winner!
Strength begins with weakness. How can you even claim your strength unless you faced off with a challenge that you found yourself lacking/weak against.
It's tough to cope with the loss of our youthful sense of invincibility - to be confronted with something that fundamentally challenges who you think you are and your boundaries with the world. I like to think that the best a man can do when confronted with the reality of how delicate their life is to try accept it and integrate that knowledge into your way of life so that if a man ever has the misfortune of having to deal with it again he will be better prepared to react when confronted with it. At the end of the day, a life is a life and injured pride is better than a lost life. I'm no fighter (yet) but this video spoke to me.
I enjoy your videos man, and appreciate the fact you like to explore so many different topics. Muchas gracias compadre! Suerte dondequiera que te encuentres!
You got out of there with your health and your gear. That’s strength. Recognise “your” strength, not what society puts on you. Well done mate. Your strong. Even asking Ramsey takes strength.
i have learned my lesson in an unexpected way. Not so much in a physical way (i've learned how i can get my butt kicked a while ago countless times during practice lol, ive been taught that humility a long time ago), but i am talking a complete psychological destruction. I wasn't respecting psychedelics as much as i should have, doing a magic mushroom trip once every month or more within a year. I didn't realize i was hitting it so hard, u don't need anything more than once a year tbh. About 16 trips in from small to heroic doses i thought i have cheated death, came to terms with it and nothing could bring me down. I got cocky and felt superior. I thought i learned all the lessons about many things in life. The next trip was to teach me the most important lesson of all, humility as u said. To make me realize how i had control over nothing.. how many things can make me their b*tch if the opportunity came. (Getting shot in war, wild animals, an armed attacked or a group, an airplane propeller crashing on my head out of nowhere haha), in all these instances there is little chance for me to survive. So i had 8 hours of pure psychological hell. A panic i have never ever felt in my life before, there was nothing physically threatening me, just whatever power wanted to teach me a lesson that day. I was crying for hours begging for it to stop, screaming, i thought i was dying or losing my sanity for ever. It felt like a thousand miles an hour. Where did my bravado and superiority go when i was forced to beg for mercy with my face on the ground? I was made to let it all go, submit and accept my weakness or lack of control. As soon as i fully accepted and submitted completely then i was let free, as a man that has learned his lesson. I guess that was truly my ego death experience as some people call it.
Being aware of my weaknesses makes me more careful and mature. Discovered many fighting to be stronger. Thanks for this video. You say truth that is very hard to find these days.
I can relate to this story because it remembers me how weak i feel when I get physically overwelmed by people older than me (being 16) but that trains hard everyday, at sone point I felt humble by thinking that eventhough I wont surpass them now I can compete with what they can do and keep on striving to surpass them .
"Respect is the currency of the feeble-minded" - that was well put. As weird as it sounds I really don't understand the concept of respect, especially with how certain poeple use it. For example my sister-in-law tidied up my kitchen but when it became untidy again she took it as a sign of disrespect. When I heard that; I got confused because me untidying my kitchen had absolutely nothing to do with her, and was more to do with my own laziness. People seem to bandy around the word without it really meaning anything. At the end of the day respect is basically admiration and acceptance put into one. Also when we're given weakness it allows us to appreciate strength. When we're in a position of strength then we need to help those in a position of weakness.
you hit the nail on the head, in my experience it seems to me that "disrespect" seems to just be a catch all term that people use to describe what happens when someone does something they don't like, or they perceive some kind of slight from a otherwise innocuous action.... it usually doesn't have anything to do with the actual definition of respect... with some people they throw the word around so much it simply loses all meaning...
I think it depends.. Example say your supposed to meet someone somewhere at a certain time.. and there always late having you wait. I believe the late person is being disrespectful of the other guys time.. As far as your story goes yes, I would agree your sister did a good deed and you didn't appreciate it much she shouldn't have the right because it's your standard... She just did you a favor
@@zacpreston9771 being appreciative and grateful is different from respect. Having said that, if someone does me a favour then I owe them something similar in return. Or at the very least it builds trust and friendship. A nice thing done should be done with the intention of helping or being beneficial. If it turns out that nice thing was wasted then you're free to continue being nice or withhold doing nice things. But if you're only nice when you're treated well, then are you really nice? As for your time example, you're absolutely right. Being on time is indeed paying respect to both the agreement of the meeting and of course the other person's time. I could go on and on, but the problem is that as human beings we interpret things subjectively. In fact a university professor recently got suspended for explaining the chinese filler word naga and how it's used, and it sounds similar to a racial slur, even though he explained the context and it was clear he was talking about how this filler word is used in chinese, but some of his students got offended and reported him. People lose sight of "intentions". Intentions are the core of any action taken. If you give charity to show off, this is very different than charity given to genuiney help. Even if the show off charity was multiple millions the core intention ruins the charity. By the same token if I didn't intend to slander, be disrespectful or hurt someone but then that someone felt hurt, slandered or disrespected, that's beyond my control as that's how they've chosen to react.
@@curtisbrown547 It comes down to intention at the end of the day right? If I don't mean to hurt you, but you got hurt, that's how you decided to react to it. That's beyond my control. This is why it's important to examine intentions as well as the actions and the means taken to carry out the action. Only then would you have a more objective view. But at the end of the day I'm not prepared to walk on egg shells around people because the truth is the truth.
When your kitchen became untidy AFTER you had been honored by the one that cleaned it, you showed your lack of respect for her (and yourself). Laziness is disrespect for everyone that is affected. You had the option of preserving something of value that you were gifted. Not living up to our potential dishonors all we have opportunity to service. You dishonored someone that cleaned for you. If you think you do not like cleaning after yourself, imagine how it can be for someone cleaning another's space. Perhaps she wanted to get the ball rolling for you, but you only showed you take her efforts lightly. Do you take her lightly? If so, is it because you take yourself lightly? I do not believe you want to take yourself or the person lightly. Truthfully, you were dismissive towards her wonderful gesture (and so this type of thing can be hurtful). You emphasize what YOU actually meant, but does that mean you preserved the special gift she offered you. Imagine what you could communicated to her by PRESERVING the work she did on your behalf. Do not excuse yourself, but take the time to SHOW your gratitude, rather than merely allowing her the "privilege" of cleaning up after you. People show their love in different ways. Even if you meant not to slight her (and frankly, I do not think you did), the truth is people may not feel the need to get super petty thereby creating undo strain on the relationship. She probably sees the value being clean (as it translates to bringing out the best in you), so make that important! She may been giving you a message indirectly, so wake up your faculties and be the better version of yourself that she was attempting to bring to the surface.
I've been on the losing end of altercations for much of my life. For some reason it's fed my pride instead of help remove it. The only thing that seemed to help was when I first believed the Gospel. At this point, I believe only God can help me find humility.

Man, these videos are gold, im from Argentina, Buenos Aires, these places are wild. Im happy for you justo to be alive, passing thru here as a stranger is hard
Great video as always. Loved that it touched on very important aspects of being human: being humble, knowing your weaknesses("know thyself") and facing them, understanding respect, etc - and the "religious/spiritual" connotations of that, which are universal in a way. Thanks for the content! All the best to you and yours! Cheers
I've been seeing many vids, specially the Q&As, from you coach. And I've learned something: the power fantasy it comes from weakness and fear. And maybe the will to violence (as in those power fantasies) is a form of trauma resolve, for those of us that are not interested on MA. I've come to realise that I need to humble myself and sort out some inner pain. Or maybe some inmaturity. "To be gentle takes courage", seems about right. I will try to become a better man.
To all the Dannys out there. Any real martial artist will tell you that avoiding the situation or escaping the the situation with out harm or loss of anything is a win! 1 on 3+ is only winnable in the movies and is a life or death situation. You should feel good that your training/physical fitness/survival instinct got you through.
You have an incredible capacity to teach. Your unique life experience has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and resources to reach people all over the world. This video was excellent. Mas, por favor! Incorporating the element of faith was something I would really enjoy seeing more!
It's hard for one to come to terms with one's own weaknesses, but even observing weakness in others can be sobering. Especially the unexpected kind of weakness. When I was serving NS (compulsory military service for all guys in my country), I had a company mate who was "best trainee" in our company. He also had a great physique. Then one day, while chilling at the balcony, a beetle landed on his arm. He froze, and squirmed, "get it off ! get it off!" I went to him and said, "dude ! just shake your arm!" but he was still in panic mode and couldn't do anything, so I swatted his wrist (not directly on the beetle since I didn't want to squash it there), and the shockwave caused the beetle to fly off. Yeah, at that moment, I did feel a certain dark satisfaction at seeing such a "manly" guy panicking over a harmless insect on his arm, but it has also got me rethinking about what "strength" really means.
Humility isn't an achievement in a game, it's not a title for your resume. It's a method of understanding, and when necessary a measure to embody. You don't need to wear shabby clothes every day and say preachy things to be humble, you just need to appreciate and understand your limitations, and the limitations of others. Humility is how we can sincerely and honestly assess ourselves and look at the world with empathy, compassion, and ultimately fairness. The beautiful thing about the ego of the young man is that you don't need to be young or a man to have an ego, you just need to reject understanding and learning from challenges.
Gotta say, he managed to run away safely without losing his stuff....that's a better outcome than many folks would get in that situation. At least he knew how far he could go and didn't try to risk his life pushing it.

Humble as a strength. Each time i accept my weakness I feel lighter. The weight of conditional love is lifted. It does require that i let my idea die My idol. Not easy, but simple. Take care
I will claim that being humiliated and being humble is two very different things. Yes the one can lead to the other, but! Humiliation comes from outside forces and humbleness comes from within.
Dear Ramsey, thanx a lot for that reasoning about the weakness. You gave me lots of answers that I needed.. Last night, I was questioning my self, why the h(eck) am I not a successfull person?? I mean- at all, by the standards set by contemporary society, though its necessary when one lives in today's world.. And it felt no good at all. So you kind of answer to me too.👍👍👍 Luv & Respect
I feel even more humbled after watching this, I used to think when I was a kid " I'm gonna get good and ain't nobody gonna tell me nothing" but as of recent with skill development and past experiences really on mind, I think about it all the time, if all I gotta do is open my wallet and hand someone cash to solve a problem and the situation calls for it all do it.
Sounds like this fellow was in one or more of what I'd call "no win situations". Situational Awareness -- being proactive in keeping alert to your environment (and the inhabitants of said environs) is the best way that I know to avoid those. Keep your heads up, eyes open & off the goddamned phones, try and never let yourself get enveloped/cornered. Y'all stay safe. Adversity breeds hardness, and weakness invites adversity... know your weaknesses, while playing to your strengths (yeah, paraphrasing Sun Tzu, sue me lol). Coach, loves this one, cause acknowledging personal 'weakness(es)', that was a hard lesson, for me.
I haven't watched the full video yet, but i will say that the way i look at it is that if you survived, you won. It's not a weakness that you cannot beat multiple attackers with weapons when you are unarmed. It's a dose of reality. Edit: Look at it as a fight in a larger scale, running away is like dodging a punch. Then you can deliver a counter attack if you locate them but why would you?
Ok, the whole psychological aspect of running away is hard, but think of it like military tactics. "When the enemy is united, you have to divide them and attack the place where they are not prepared." is another nice thing Sun Tzu said. What was the objective there ? Not getting mugged and staying alive. You achieved that with minimal risks by employing the "retreat" tactics in front of a more numerous adversary. That is a sound tactic, so you can use other advantages you may have another day.
Irrelevant comment but i had left my Muay Thai gym 3-4 month back. I'm not stating the reason bcz it's not worth giving excuses but a part of it was a fear of sparring. Kinda regretting this descision as I miss going to the gym and now that covid got worse all places are shut. But i remember you saying "Focus on what you can change and not on things that you can't ". So thats what I'm doing. Workouts and shadowboxing until things get better in a couple of months and maybe I'll drag myself back to the gym again. It's kinda an uncomfortable feeling but imma do it anyway. Thanks to you Ramsey.
He kinda does... I have had dozens of classes in various aspects of Philosophy, and Ramsey Dewey has a more cohesive, consistent philosophical paradigm than I learned in any of those - one which he seems to *live*
I got robbed 5 years ago by a man with a knife in Amsterdam in the night, I was really high (weed). He surprised me asking me what time was it and the moment I watch the time on my phone he pointed me his knife and asked me money. I ended up giving him the cash I got, it was luckily only 20 euros. While I had practiced martial arts since age 4 (judo, jujitsu, karate,...) I couldn't do anything and froze, and my huge mistake was to be high so my alertness was not there to detect the danger before it come. I felt shame for few years that I couldn't do anything... In the end it was only 20e but it hurt my pride. But then I got back to training and stopped doing any drugs to this day to always stay alert. The only drug I take is alcohol (beer) every 4-5 months for a night at my home... Thank you for your insight coach and sorry for this comment but I felt I needed to get it out my chest...
My man danny, you should be happy that you were able to get away from the danger, it was a result of your training that you were able to outrun then, it was because of your conditioning. As far as pride goes i will say this: You did'nt lose a boxing match that you have to feel bad, if you would taken up a fight you could have gotten stabbed, shot or crippled as steet fights have no rules you do what it takes to be alive so there is no need to feel bad.
I love how you see in stories things we never see usually ❤❤ I don't believe but I think the message in your holy Book is so true and so convincing if we apply it here.❤❤ Much respect from me. and thanks for this awesome video❤❤✌🏼✌🏼
Great talk, only if you are able to see you are weak and unprepared, you will find the possibility and motivation to work and growing up to strength, also learning the lesson of humbling oneself is priceless , even when you are growing stronger you never gonna crush weak person feelings because you remember you also start with the same state and feelings. Stronger is the man who is able to see his weakness and use it as tool to grow and develop skills, pride always gonna take you down because it is playing with your egocentric and negative mindset,to be humble no matter what you manage to achieve is always the right way haha somehow Coner against Habib came in mind as example of pride and self worship is making even great athletes to the cold ground and Habib in other hand never act as a jerk and always acting as humble and respectful person, so even when you are on the top of the game staying humble and respectful always gives you something, the other side always make you blind and deaf and rob you from the potential you have,Ali , Tyson the greatest falls victim of their pride and self worship.
There is something special about mma. That some people watch it for the sake of performance and others as if mma was filter of their own interests and that can be a little bit in everybody which is what we all have in common. We tend to favour our styles and sometimes it leaves some people off. Then there are all the accusations and violence, pretending to be right. The only difference would be that it would drag attention of the opposing sides even though they are looking at the same thing, some will be intrigued by all elements thus will remain feeling unfulfilled in terms of what else could there be. Other person will remain feeling fulfilled from the comfort of a comment section but there is different interest, same result. That is not to say that we need or don’t need either side but the complexity of our judging of things could be beyond imagination and that’s why we watch mma, we never like things being inaccessible, we want them to work within. The thing that would connect all the dots would be the outcome of a fight so then we can use that information in various ways... it can be driven or we would let off the steering wheel go.
I started building a form of psychological armour by bodybuilding back in 2012, after having been kidnapped by a Mexican cartel in the summer of 2011. The only difference, I believe, is that I was fully aware that I was doing it to ''feel'' safer. I knew that no matter how many curls I did, there was no way it would help me from mercenaries with machine guns and grenades. It worked anyway. From bodybuilding, I transitioned to Crossfit, then Olympic Weightlifting, and now Muay Thai; but it's still fulfilling the same function. As I put in work, I feel more confidence and more empowered; despite the fact that ALL of these practices expose my weaknesses up close and personal on a daily basis. There's something I get out of training that's worth a lot more than the physical ''results'' I get from it.
"Respect is the currency for the feeble-minded". An interesting point. Not everybody would agree though. Speaking about religion - try telling this to Khabib and his friends from Dagestan. Respect over there is everything, a currency and a religion (well, the second religion after the obvious one). These guys are truly live and breathe respect - they don't easily give it, yet they actively demand it, and it's very easy to get in trouble by not showing enough of it to them. I knew a few such people when I was much younger. This worldview is prevalent in those regions of Caucasus, and there are many similar cultures like that around the world. Are they all feeble-minded? I'm not sure. But other than that, great words of wisdom and consolation, as always.
The problem is this: we feel must respond to a threat. But we never feel that we should prepare for a threat. If the person had PREPARED for the possibility of an attack, he often avoid the attack altogether. Situational awareness is critical. The only difference between a special operator and a regular joe is PREPARATION. Not altercation. And situational awareness.
Hey Ramsey I'm a huge fan. I currently practice Wado-Ryu karate, Muay Thai, A more modernized Version of Wing Chun, Capoeira (Angola), Some Boxing and BJJ. I've been practicing BJJ on and off since I was 8, I'm 22 now, I don't really like it because of how it was marketed to me. When I was a kid and I wanted to get back into Karate at the time, BJJ was the hype and both the owner of the gym and my mom were kinda do BJJ I hope I'd didn't waste my time coming all the way over here to for now reason. So I did it, Competed in N.A.G.A. and got 2nd and third place doing Gi and No Gi for the first time. But I never really liked it. I can apply BJJ in a self defense scenario against someone who doesn't know it, but when it comes to sparring even back then and now my brain cuts off and all my technique and understanding positioning goes out the window. Any advice to fix this problem? If not thank you for your time. I also had some other questions such as: -Haymakers and other strikes, Do they have a high likelihood of knocking out or doing enough to stop someone who's tryna grapple? - Using Capoeira to Counter Strike in MMA - What system(s) Do you think would work best to compliment Tai Chi if a practioner wanted to get into MMA ? -What are some thoughts you have on Modern Day Traditional Karate/Taekwondo Schools, What can they do to improve as systems and be used more effectively in MMA sport fighting and self-defense? - How to be the non counter striker in the ring/sparring (The Guy who throws the first punch and possibly leads the fight), as I'm naturally more of a counter striker ? -Pivoting (like a boxer or Thai fighter) using the force from the ground without lifting your heel(like a lot of traditional kung fu) to perform a hook. Is that bad for the knees and the joints? -Negativa In The Cage? Could it work? I appreciate you taking the time to read this and I apologize for making the list super long, I wanted to make it interesting in hopes you could cover it in a video on your channel and see what you have to say. I also plan on taking a trip with a friend(s) out to your school some time to train out there.
@@RamseyDewey Thx much appreciated.
Facing your own fear , your own shame , your own fail.
Facing yourself and then rise again
and again
and again

I don't mind being weak, it means I can improve
he had an amazing arc.
not a fan of disney marvels actors politics but damn, what an arc.
Stark too wow.
There's nothing you can do about getting jumped. You're a human, not Goku.
"There are all these outward manifestations of what we think a man is supposed to be"
Starts describing himself
:) Hahaha
Graduated from the best of the worst to the worst of the best recently so I appreciate the message

Very interesting story
Perhaps I use pride and bravado, to hide my own weakness from myself , thanks for sharing coach

Great video as always. Loved that it touched on very important aspects of being human: being humble, knowing your weaknesses("know thyself") and facing them, understanding respect, etc - and the "religious/spiritual" connotations of that, which are universal in a way. Thanks for the content! All the best to you and yours! Cheers
I know the feeling. It sucks to freeze in those situations, but then again coming out of them unharmed is the real win here.
The lessons learned by the young man's ego usually end up shaping the old man's identity.

It's hard for one to come to terms with one's own weaknesses,
but even observing weakness in others can be sobering. Especially the unexpected kind of weakness.
When I was serving NS (compulsory military service for all guys in my country),
I had a company mate who was "best trainee" in our company. He also had a great physique.
Then one day, while chilling at the balcony, a beetle landed on his arm.
He froze, and squirmed, "get it off ! get it off!"
I went to him and said, "dude ! just shake your arm!"
but he was still in panic mode and couldn't do anything,
so I swatted his wrist (not directly on the beetle since I didn't want to squash it there),
and the shockwave caused the beetle to fly off.
Yeah, at that moment, I did feel a certain dark satisfaction at seeing such a "manly" guy panicking over a harmless insect on his arm,
but it has also got me rethinking about what "strength" really means.
This was a great episode. I hope all you listeners watch it a few times and take it to haert.
I feel very connected to the stories from the book you always read. Very important messages and very wise!

You're a good soul.
Great message's here. Thanks
thanks for that Ramsey
This was a good episode thank you Coach.
'Hard for you to get hurt' sounds like you're remembering a line from what's probably my favorite kung fu movie of all time - The Kung Fu Cult Master.
Ramsey could probably teach philosophy if he wanted to
He kinda does...
The Lord makes us all meek through adversity so we all recognize that we can only rely on Him and not on ourselves.
Yeah..we need to be humble to find favour in the eyes of God

1:41 being able to admit vulnerabilities is actually a strength, pretending you don't have vulnerabilities is when they become weaknesses
Love the thumbnail
Losing some pride is better than losing your teeth, health or life.
I Hope That I Had a Bigger Bro Like Ramsey , Or just a Mentor
I also had some other questions such as:
-Haymakers and other strikes, Do they have a high likelihood of knocking out or doing enough to stop someone who's tryna grapple?
- Using Capoeira to Counter Strike in MMA
- What system(s) Do you think would work best to compliment Tai Chi if a practioner wanted to get into MMA ?
