Nothing unreasonable there. Back end was his main profile as far as I remember + he did quite some serious hacking before PP. That could easily explain security and network engineering which he did later. As for the system architects, they usually grew out of skilled backend devs such as Gil. Finally, machine learning. I know frontend devs who switched to that stuff. That's not rocket science. Just a new trend. So, nope. Scriptwriters weren't high. Gilfoyle is gloomy talented guy in a startup with a few exaggerations for the sake of drama.
