Yes, do this while you are young. If you wait until after retirement, you'll find you wish you did it while you were younger. That is my old man message for the day.......
That was a excellent video, I waited until I retired, 1 rim to river and back at age 69, 1 rim to river and back and 2 rim to rims at age 73, 1 rim to rim last summer age 74 headed back this May for more hiking in the Canyon, I plan on hiking same route as your video and maybe anothere rim to rim ,but I do wish I had started younger when I would not have hesitated for rim to rim to rim hike
This loop in the vid would be the easiest inside the canyon- what would be perfect for a novice, is to not do this in one day- but reserve a site at Indian Gardens. So it would be down one day 8-9 miles, spend the night & hike 4 miles out (up).
That's wonderful Fran, my Father in his late 60s did a couple hikes w me, now 75 wants to do some more lol. That's great you appreciate the canyon so much, it's the other-worldly that appeals to me.
I am a Brit and will be going to the USA in 2024 to see the total solar eclipse in Texas on the 8th of April. After seeing the eclipse our group will be going to New Mexico and Arizona. We will have a free day at the Grand Canyon and I am planning on walking from the South Kaibab trailhead to Skeleton Point and back. I will be 67 when I do it. Going there in mid-April, I am more concerned about the cold than the heat especially at the trailhead.
i've never hiked it but my 70 year old dad did a number of times. We celebrated his 80th birthday there in April, 2008 as a snowstorm came through. I've never seen so many colors in the wet stones after the clouds cleared. Also, the western redbud trees were blooming in Indian Gardens. We could see them from the rim, bright magenta ribbons of color.
Wow! I am really impressed with your video and you are definitely a no fooling around hiker! You did 14 miles in 6 hrs, including shooting this great video, that is really awesome! Thanks again for making these videos, really appreciate the time and effort you put into them.
Love watching you hike! Nice quiet music! I can hear you walking, that makes me feel like I’m there! I’m 72 with a hip replacement so I will never be able to do this! I hike shorter hikes here in Canada so really enjoy watching your big hikes! Thank you!
Beautifully done! Thank you. I've done the South Kaibab and Bright Angel twice but never the Tonto. Thanks for the memories and great photos AND for seeing the Tonto for the first time!
everything about this trip was beautiful. since my back operation, theres no way i could do this hike so thanks for letting me see it through your trip sweetheart.
My very FIRST backpacking trip was in 2016 to Grand Canyon. We did it at the end of April with forecast of 80s-90s temps... well, the first day down that was true. We arrived at camp at the bottom and set up our tents tired and dripping wet. The next day we hiked over to Indian Gardens arriving before lunch, set up our tents and the Ranger came over and told us a storm was coming in with rain. So it rained during night, we packed up in am to hike out and the temp kept dropping. Yes, it snowed on us and we were in shorts with no gloves! Never have I hiked faster than we did to get back up to Rim to find about 3" snow on the ground. LOL From 90s to 30s in 2 days.... That is the Grand Canyon. Quite an adventure but it makes for great stories.
Hi Christine Nice hike. I missed the GC in 2020. But you are the third video I have watched of people that just hiked it in the past week. I need to lace up my boots and get moving. Thanks 😊
I can understand the desire to return to the Grand Canyon and have been eyeing some routes for an upcoming 🤞🏼 overnighter. Hopefully you make it there soon!
That is a nice hike, I did that last Oct '20 (two weeks shy of my 75th birthday). I thought the Tonto West Trail the toughest part. There was no shade to speak off, except next to large boulders. There were no markers to indicated distance, like halfway there, or third of the way.. It is steeper than I thought, especially as you get closer to Indian Gardens. For a relatively short 3 mile hike, it was rougher going part of the trail.
I did this hike yesterday. I am 62 and trained quite a bit, mostly on treadmill and stairmaster. Some long hikes but none prepared me for that rough downhill walk down south kaibab. Luckily I watched some videos that helped save my toes and knees by tying shoe and hiking correctly. But despite this my legs were spent before I hit Tonto. Agree not the flat easy hike I expected, but beautiful. The uphill Bright Angel, despite being relentless turned out to probably being the easiest of the three legs. Prepare on every way, a wonderful hike.
@@grmgrm5546 Glad you enjoyed the hike. The way people write about the trek down and up, they make it sound so dangerous. Preparation and anticipation are key to succeeding.
Good stuff. I like that South Kaibab trail, but it's a dry one. I was down there last Autumn. Down the S. Kaibab and back up the Bright Angle. T'was a glorious 3 days. I saw the Tonto, but haven't walked it. Rock on, Lady.
Astonishing!!! The amazing thing is... in February 2021. I was there too and accomplished by the supernatural Grace of GOD the south RIM to RIM hike and i also posted it on social media! WOW! We just missed each other taking the same exact route south kia to phantom ranch at Colorado river to bright angel over 22 miles in less then 11 hours in 1 day! Praise GOD!!! It was absolutely AWESOME seeing your video of it all and brought back so many memories! GREAT JOB! GOD Bless You! KEEP GOING😀😀😀🙏👍
Way back in the 70s I hiked both south kaibab and bright angel. Your vid brought back memories. I always enjoy your vids and those of your aunt catherine. Carry on‼️
Hi! Christine! I was there on December 28, 2020. I started at Mathers Point and walked and photographed down to the Village. It was a beautiful day and lots of people there too. I still desire to hike down into the canyon. The trails you took look very pretty. Thanks for sharing! Loved the photos and video.
March was a good time for me. Bright Angel to Phantom Ranch. There was quite a bit of ice at the top and I used crampons and poles. It's good to learn about the Tonto Trail cut over. Loved watching your winter trip. Thanks. :)
Nice video. Planning on doing this hike in late October. Training for it now. Did an 11.5 mile hike this week. But it only had 800 ft elevation climb. Next time I do it, I'll drive home afterwards. Have a meal like I would at Indian Gardens and do 4 or 5 miles on my treadmill with the incline jacked up to simulate the ascent.
OMG! That sunset was spectacular! What a perfect day for a hike in the canyon. I would love to get back there when it isn't 118 in the canyon. LOL! I missed filming most of the Rim to Rim because we were hiking in the dark when it was cooler. Thinking it is time for another Grand Canyon adventure!
My husband and I visited the North Rim in mid-May, just a few days after the road opened. It was still winter, let me tell you! Ponds mostly iced over, and lots of snow. We camped about midway between Jacob Lake and the Rim, and it was beautiful. I went back some years later and took my daughter to the same area; that was fall. Also beautiful.
I did about a 20 mile chunk of the Tonto going east from South Bass Canyon. You're right about how it's much less used. And being relatively flat is nice. To anyone who is interested, Colin Fletcher wrote a book called The Man Who Walked Through Time. In it he documents his account of being the first person to walk the entire length of the Grand Canyon, completely below the rim. Much of that hike (done in 1963) was along the Tonto Esplanade before the trails were built. Thanks for taking us along.
Been to Grand Canyon once. Did not have enough time for much of a trail walk. Thank you for the detailed trail information! Helps with my next visit to this beautiful park. Love your videos and am always so excited to see them!
Great video Christine! I definitely gotta do the Tonto next time cuz I’m always hiking the South Kaibab to Phantom, then up the Bright Angel. Getting a bit much for the knees for a day hike. Looks so green but surprised there’s not snow at the rim. Happy trekking.
Not so much in December, but if you go closer to summer remember that down inside the canyon can be considerably hotter than at the rim. You might think it is cool and you will only hike down partway then back up, but it will get hot and you can hike down a lot quicker than you can hike back up.
I'm really happy for you because you took on this awesome adventure by yourself and that it is going well for you. Keep doing it as long as you can. I wish I had done it when I was younger. Stay safe.
Beautiful hike, I know how tired I was hiking down the South Kaibab to the river, then back as a day hike. You probably did 2X the mileage going back to retrieve your camera countless times! Totally agree about the use of hiking poles. They saved me from slipping and falling or twisting an ankle countless times. I prefer visiting in Oct/Nov for cooler weather with mostly dry and sunny conditions. Summer is completely out due to crowds and heat.
Very nice!! I did this hike 30 years ago I don't remember the rest area at Cedar Ridge. Last hiked in GC (Plateau Point) about 5 years ago an early May hike weather was nice but ice on the trail near the rim in the morning.
Awesome video I hiked to Ooh Ahh Point last November it was beautiful. Coming back up was tough for me I am not a hiker but will spend this year getting in better shape I want to go down to phantom ranch and back up this November. That is my goal and I am going to do it!
If you're hiking solo, it must have been a lot of extra walking to set up the camera. I did that same walk in May of 2019 - The temperature was in the high nineties across the Tonto. Despite what they say about Tonto being flat - it is not - up and down every step across. It was beautiful to see, and there is no other way to see it, but I would do it as a two-day next time. Trekking poles are a must in the Grand Canyon
