Rental-car abuse and holiday road trips - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 8

- Derek Tam-Scott arranged a holiday road trip for a bunch of his friends, and in this episode, Jason Cammisa learns his real motivation for it: to abuse a loaner car. What follows is a discussion about the great parts of taking road trips with friends, the dangers of mountain weather, and a lot of stories about how to properly get your money’s worth out of rental cars. From Jumping Jettas to Flying Tercels, this Carmudgeon show is light on the facts but heavy on the laughs.
Plus, we get to know the real Hyphen. Who knew he was such a rebel?
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on TH-cam alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

Rental car abuse? I filled the back of an Aries K with sand and salt on New Smyrna Beach, FL, then totaled it. I'm pretty sure Avis has me blacklisted, even 30 years later.
What in the world is an Aries K, and why did you fill it with sand and salt?
Jason’s stories had me literally in tears laughing 😂
Mechanical Sympathy is not in Jason's vocabulary.
Hayden Cook seriously 😂
@Briggs Malcolm Yup, I have been watching on KaldroStream for since december myself :D

Hwy 36 betw Red Bluff and Fortuna has a famous sign showing the iconic curve “S” graphic above the following text: “next 140 miles”. One of my faves.....
I've wondered about that highway for decades. Now I'll have to drive it...during the summer.
wow, that looks wonderful on google maps. I'll have to try it one day. Thanks!
OMG, catching up on old podcasts, this Tercel story is hilarious.
I’d like a show topic on modifying your personal cars...what you usually do and why and what you don’t do.
I always get excited when someone I look up to comes through the town I live! No one interesting comes through Redding literally ever. Cheers!
*The on screen chemistry between Jason & Johnny (MotorTrend show) was just too good to miss even a single episode*
Every time I have a rental car, I stop it by putting it into park while still moving instead of using the brake.
My favorite press car experience was when I worked at the official importer of dodge cars to the uk. We had our first viper just after it was released and it was lent out to a member of the press for the weekend. They took it to London and not understanding how wide it was they turned down a lane in London and ripped both sides off the car on the walls of the lane. That was a fun rebuild on a brand new car which took forever as there were no parts for it in the UK
Yeaaaaah... Ive had that gli picture as my background for almost a week and it makes me smile every single time
I've actually got a Versa rental right now. Someone managed to straighten a curve and hit my car in my work parking lot (!), so it's in the body shop for the holidays
The Versa is a 2020 with 3k on the odo and it's fine. It's fine.
I'll be honest, I fully expected to get a half decade old, clapped out Versa which I absolutely intended to abuse (pent up frustration from having to deal with insurance adjuster, police department, body shop, rental place, etc boiling over) but I swear to you I've treated this Versa as if it were my own. It's too young, too innocent. It's done nothing to deserve my contempt.
I mean, the lane assist is laughable and the button to turn it off/on has no discernable tactile feedback *and* is completely hidden by the stearing wheel..
The cruise isn't radar guided like my daily either, so that sucks. Honestly, "dumb" cruise control feels borderline dangerous now that I've gotten used to otherwise. Like "I'm just going to set the car to do this speed until.. it hits something, I guess?" Wack.
Jason is super cute with that hat!
When my family was in The Czech Republic we had a ŠKoda Octavia Wagon(Golf Sportwagon) With a 1.6 Diesel we beat the hell out of that car we maxed it out on the autobahn(122 MP/H)
It seems Derek was very naughty this Christmas with that loaner lol
Pretty sure they were talking about Thanksgiving but yeah 😂
So as a 986 boxster s owner, the skill that car has is above mine. To hear Jason call it boring says more about Jason’s skill level than the boxster.
I have an idea for an episode of the proper care and feeding of cars: shifting an automatic car while it’s in motion, or should I say, not doing that
I love this show.. I hope you guys continue to do it forever
What a great story!!!
Derek Tam-Scott just won me over. This is among my top views now.
I think the track in West Virginia was Summit Point Raceway, my local slice of heaven.
Back in a different life. I considered a small chevy convert. So I rented a couple. Returned both with the front suspension torn off. One from a rock slide. One from canyon abuse in la jolla ca. Hilside drive ?
Where can we find the mentioned video of the Elise getting “flooded” on that concrete boat launch
i have never treated a rental car horribly. i have bought cars that were already crashed/a few hundred $ and abused the crap out of them though. the best thing about buying a car that has already been crashed is that you dont have to care if you fit some lightly used rally tires on the front (this particular example was a toyota camry) and side swipe a few trees as you drive it like you are running your own rally stage on private property.
I took rental insurance on a car that a friend drove sideways over a 4 to 5 inch tree. You could reach out and pick up a beer can thru the V in the door
Guys, "Hey what's in this drink" is a meme from back then meaning that there weren't alcohol in the drink at all.
The song isn't rapey, it's just that you don't understand English from the ancient times back when Derek Tam-Scott was still young.
Its still rapey. Its a guy consistently trying to convince a girl to stay when she’s saying no over and over
@@Pheatan
She's not saying NO!!!!
She's saying No~~~ ^_^, oooh, stop it~
Agreed I treat my friends cars nice and only push them when they tell me I can. My cars I am both, nice to my daily but push my fun cars all the time. The rental car is free game to go hard as I can
I have destroyed 7 rental cars badly. Never a scratch by me. But one car went over / thru a tree.
Congrats Jason (and Derek) - another fun episode
7 laps at Watkins Glen in a Sebring Convertible rental with the stereo cranked. 21 miles.
I drove my lancia scorpion 1976 on the track for five vintage races. Wow that is a nice track. But laguna seca is cooler with the rise and drops. And watkins glen is my favorite.
About the sea water and the Lotus: as long as your electrical wiring doesn't get too much of it... Fresh water isn't good at conducting electricity, salt water is, so with salt water short circuits are more likely.
Splitting the difference between the Elise and the 986 Boxster is the S2000. Thoughts??
Happy Holidays everyone!
Thats a great road trip. Did a road trip in 03 with 6 cars and 12 people (each car with a codriver) from Truckee to Red Bluff to Eureka to Fort Bragg. 6am to 6pm drive, totally epic use of Mapquest lol. Highway 36 was the best but... Apparently it was flattened in the last few years :(
MapQuest... Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.
Totally agree with Jason. This past summer I Turo'd a Lotus Evora 400 and a Boxster 981 GTS back to back and while a great all around car the Boxster is just so boring compared to the Lotus. Lotus all day every day and unlike the Elise the Evora is daily drivable.
I prefer fun runs on the back roads over the road courses or autocross. I loved my 2007 STI and 2012 EVO MR due to the fact they didn't give a F about road conditions. I can't say the same for all my rear wheel sports cars, although my Cayenne Turbo wasn't terrible on back roads and was a monster in the snow.
Love the show! Agree on the 986.
Jason tells great stories👍😂
Unreal content guys
Rental Car enthusiastic testing happens, for example: no need to slow down speed bumps
I've driven that "crappy road"; the lost coast road will RUIN tires and wheels. It's awful. We drove it with an Infiniti QX56. I can't imagine driving it with low-profile tires.
I could be wrong but i feel like those crappy roads are basically just average north east roads
@@Pippy1that’s about right, it’s why we love Subarus and shit up here, it’s like our own little rally course 😂
Please add links in the future for these videos you mention.....
Jason, just between you and us, tell us more...... and show the pictures :)
Jason, please send me the coordinates of the Ocean bath... looking forward to wash a few of my cars.
3 seconds in and gave it a 'thumbs up'.
Jason, I have two questions for you:
Would you consider running Toyo R888Rs on your elise?
Should I buy a 2011 Elise R for 37,000 USD? That's the series 3 Elise, I haven't seen much content on it in North America.
As long as you dont get caught in the rain? Did you buy an elise in the end?
He hits and it ricochets the back of the wheels down so hard that on the landing all four hubcaps flew off 26:23
God this is brilliant
Please do an episode about SUVs/crossovers like the Macan. We want some delicious vindication
YUP! Great show. Thank you for keeping treasured back roads of Northern California secret. There was one years ago in MotorTrend Head to Head that is a favorite.
Let's see. Eight exposures and 2 frames per second. It's a good day.
Tell me another story Jason.....
Ah seven months ago. Before the dark times.
"Back, and to the left."
That logo almost looks like the old Creme logo
My favorite rental car abuse story is from the 90s -- the rental Neon with a nitrous kit that did 13s. This seems to be a reprint of it: www.decibelcar.com/articles/40-everything-else/181-byeneon.html

A little too much is read into that song.
People starting shit, where there's no shit to start. It's an old saying of sarcasm, "what (alcohol) was in that drink"
Yeah, heaven forbid anyone do any deeper research than reading CNN's headlines
Derek, you're reading too much into that song.
Derek makes Jason Boring = No views
