  • "How Long" is a 1974 song by the British group Ace from their album Five-A-Side. It reached No. 3 in the US and Canadian charts, and No. 20 in the UK Singles Chart and 11 in the Dutch charts.
The Amazon commercial for prime delivery resurrected Paul Carrack's hit, “How Long,” sending it up the iTunes Charts After 45 Years. Paul Carrack was the vocalist of Ace that recorded the song in 1974.
Ace were a British rock band, who enjoyed moderate success in the 1970s. Their membership included Paul Carrack, who later became famous as the co-lead vocalist of Mike + The Mechanics and as a solo artist. Ace are best known for their hit single "How Long", which was a top 20 single in the United Kingdom in 1974, and reached no. 3 in the United States and Canada in 1975.The song was composed by lead singer Paul Carrack upon discovering that bassist Terry Comer had been secretly working with the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. Comer returned to Ace in time to play on the song.
The guitar solo is by lead guitarist Phil Harris. Alan 'Bam' King was the band's rhythm guitarist, formerly with the Action.
In 2020 'How Long' is featured in a commercial for Amazon.com

Same. My parents had a bunch of records - many compilations albums - diverse range of artists..but I was just a kid 8 years of age and obviously not aware of politics. I knew the artists were black or white or latin or whomever because of the pictures on the covers...but that's it. It was all "just music" to me.

There's perfection in imperfection when the vocals of Freddie Mercury without autotune was compared with the vocals of Michael Buble with autotune. Freddie Mercury had a richer and less empty voice. Even the best singers are now subjected to autotune. Not that there weren't bad singers in the 70's. But they still sounded better than autotuned voices.

Started in the sixties though, after the break-out acts of the fifties like Elvis and Little Richard etc.
I remember when " cool " was never voiced.
One either was, or quite definitely was not.
Nowadays everything is " cool" or " awesome", so that these words or attributes now mean nothing.
Of course now that people talk with their thumbs, the word " friend " means nothing either.

You are so right, now that you mention it.
Being “cool” was an attitude. Either you were or you weren’t. People didn’t talk about it. It wasn’t something to aspire to by wearing clothes or shoes or what you had. It was a state of mind aura of confidence.
I saw a report the other day about young girls(10-12 YO) involved in cheerleading.
The reporters asked one of them why she liked it and she said “because it’s fun and it’s cool”. I just cringed. Good Grief!

This song brings such heavy nostalgia from such an incredible time. 1975, I was all of 7 years old, this song played non-stop that summer and its woven in so many priceless memories of days that are gone forever, yet amazingly in this moment they are alive: the feel of the sun, playing all day outside with the neighbors, running in the fields and the woods, the thrill of having a pool to jump in during the summer, the sound of mom making dinner, the warm summer nights, my entire family together, all 7 of us, the feeling of safety and excitement and anticipation for the life ahead. It's been 35 years since I've lived with my family, and those simple moments that seemed like normal and un-noticeable back then I value so much now. The most simple things. And I realize as I think this, that even this moment now, this simple, un-noticed moment now, is just as sacred, they are all part of this incredible mystery and journey called life. I f'ing love it!

Hate to point it out, but this is synced. None of the instruments (the Rhoads piano, the Bass or Lead electrics) are plugged in to anything. Pauls Vocals MAY be live, but that was it here. But listening to the mix, the backing vocals were pre-recorded here

    • @twk101287

    • @crystalp7242
      @crystalp7242 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Definitely lip syncing in this video, but that was common practice for a lot of music showcase shows at the time like TopPop (which I believe was a Dutch series), Top of the Pops (a British series), American Bandstand, and Soul Train. The only major music showcase shows from the ‘70s that I can think of that primarily used live vocals and instruments in performances were The Midnight Special in the U.S. (and even then it wasn’t always enforced, but I can tell you the truly live performances on that one are gems and the Midnight Special TH-cam channel is absolutely worth checking out) and The Old Grey Whistle Test in the UK (the earlier episodes feature lip synced performances but switched to live vocals and instruments as the technology improved).

The story has gotten a bit exaggerated over time.
At the time of this song, they were all struggling musicians, they were ALL doing side gigs where and when they could to keep afloat.
The difference was that the typical side-job was "hey, play this one gig for me that I can't make it to" and the one the bassist was being offered was being hinted as "... these two gigs... and if those go well, hey, maybe you could go permanent with us..."
