Matt did not mention getting the bay squared away. This was my routine. Once wake-up happened I bolted to the sink to shave and brush, and saved my urinating until after those were done. Getting the sinks was a priority. Once done though, it was always time to fix my bunk, and sweep and mop the bay. My battle buddy and I would rotate out fixing our bunks. If I had the latrine first, he'd fix both our bunks. When I got back, I would continue what wasn't done and then fall in on cleaning the barracks in general. We had good teamwork, though. You're experience might vary.

To expedite shaving and teeth brushing we made it a rule that you shaved at the most of the sinks but you a lot of times you were brushing your teeth with water from your canteen and spitting into one of the washing machines. At the end the house mouse (the person in charge of the cleaning supply closet) would dump a load of old cleaning rags and the rag mop heads. Then after PT or breakfast they went into the dryer and then after the other they went into supply closet. Plus we made it a platoon rule that everyone shaved at night too
Wake up 5.45, make bed, stand in formation 5.55, morning warmup until 6.20, come back, shave, clean rooms, lockers, go to breakfest, come back, get checked, rooms checked, get rdy for whatever that will be happening
A regular pushup is between 70-75% of your body weight, dropping to your knees reduces the percentage body weight to 54-62%. It's less weight, yes, but you are still pushing weight
I went through OSUT basic in October 1996 at Ft Leonard Wood and I still remember it vividly, and the guys in my platoon. Back then it was a lot tougher than how it is now; this I know from guys I went through with that serve still, or videos on youtube of basic and by talking to other guys that have gone through recently. It depends on who you are, but for me Basic was easy. 1) Sleep was a luxury and we didnt get much of it. 2) At chow, your appetite was out of control and the food was good. 3) When you first ship out from reception to your company, everyone in your platoon is your buddy, but by the end of your OSUT training cabin fever has set in and everyone wants to kill each other. 4) Never, EVER, volunteer for anything. 5) Keep a low profile. 6) Dont bring shit you wont need when you ship out from your home state to your basic training station; when you get to your unit for basic and go through shakedown, they will find any reason they can to make you look like an idiot. 7) If you arent running yet, start now. I'm a runner now, I was then and I was in high school. I ran a 5:29 mile and 12:26 2 mile time in PT tests and I couldn't believe how fast we ran in our ability group runs; it sucked ass. 8) You'll be in a lot of classroom training, and the drill sergeants love to turn the heat up so you fall asleep, and you will. Remember these simple things and you will coast right on through. Drill sergeants are only doing their jobs; its not personal, and its only momentary. You will get smoked, you will get screamed at and shouted at, but thats what they get paid to do. Your biggest challenges are not falling asleep when on guard duty, and avoiding fights with your buddies. Falling asleep on fire guard is the worst thing you can do.
Our wakeup is typically 0530, so we get up at 0430. In this time we do hygiene, make bunks, square away our lockers for inspection, and do final polish runs on cleaning. We are standing at ready-line (center area of our bay) by 0525. After this, we do PT together out in our gravel pit, then head inside to change out and get ready for training for the day. Sometimes we include a heat-dump (a ~10s cold shower to cool off) if we've been doing a bit extra because our battle-buddies love to make sure we're fit.
I understand why physical training is the worst and also the best time becoming a soldier especially during this segment that you explained. The exercise is pretty simple but it becomes very challenging when you have people who cannot perform or keep up with the rest of the group. Also in addition they are trying to condition your body for endurance. To my understanding a scenario could be you are in the jungle hanging by a tree branch and the enemy is below or above you searching for you. You must be able to hold your weight as long as you can in certain angles for as long as you can without detection. Also you described on how it is waking up in the morning. I have somewhat familiar understanding of this method because I have six brothers and two sisters and there was only two bathrooms and one bathroom was for my mother and stepfather and the other bathroom was for all of my brothers and sisters so getting up and getting ready for school on time dressed and eat breakfast time went very fast. Once you are accustomed on how your day will go it will not be easy but you will be able to endure the challenges because you have been conditioned to endure the punishment that comes with the responsibility every day furthermore you hold yourself accountable to show up on time ready without excuse or everybody gets their ass kicked for being late. Excuse me for my language but it is true. Thank you for this video.
Hey, young blood. Do you know how long each day do you train? Any breaks in between activities? How many hours you get to lie down, sit, sleep each day?
James Hanlon That's advice to have when you're in the actual operational army because when you're in basic and AIT you'll be sleeping in your PT uniforms anyway..
golfery: I’ve seen some trainees who tried to sleep in something other than their PT uniforms until a female drill instructor came into the platoon bay and smoked everyone because they were not in their PTs.
Hey Matt, can you do a video about what a typical weekend is like at AIT? I know they are all gonna be different but do you typically get to go off of base?
😱😱 my recruiter never told me anything about pullups. I leave for BCT soon @ Fort Leonard Wood - I now am a bit shook bc I wish I had more time. To learn all the varied pullups he has explained w/in this vid
We mostly did the 60/120sec variation. The 60 seconds of running full tilt really got hard since we were doing it for awhile and there were times we had a DS following us and he'd pick people out and make them start the 60sec run over again until they could do it without letting up. Also the showers sucked - we had less people, but less showers (plenty of sinks, toilets etc) and I was doing Basic when we were getting lets of rain in Australia - brutal. We were in mostly grass, so it was muddy and I think I might have gotten one actual shower after morning trainings so all I could really do was put my towel into one of the sinks and wash myself that way but then my towel was f*cked.
I have a question, is it true that during BCT, DS can just go into a room and turn on the lights and wake up the whole platoon and smoke them? Can they come surprisingly at 2 a.m let's say to wake up the platoon and smoke the platoon at 2 a.m?
Thanks Matt. Just found your channel. I was wondering if you know the difference between Navy and Army basic traning. I always wanted to join the Navy but couldn't because I became diabetic when I was a teen.
The best I can recommend to you is just looking up and looking into it yourself there are also a few good TH-camrs on here that do some videos on all that but if you're able to keep your diabetes in control for at least as long as you're in basic there shouldn't be much of a problem you just need to be able to go through base that can be off any medicines are all that for a month I believe it is don't quote me on that I haven't looked at that section in a while
Hunter Cato Sadly, diabetes, and other major chronic conditions, is a automatic disqualifier 99.999...% of the time, if not all the time. You can’t have any meds at basic at all, it’s true, but honestly, enlisting is almost like a business transaction, very close to our healthcare system in general. They don’t want to pay out for anyone, so they make double, triply, sure that you’re damn close to perfect health. I speak as someone going through this as we speak.
What rank are you, Matthew? Also. how many times per day in the Army would you do pushups? I can do a maximum of 50 pushups, but after I get to 45 is when it gets real hard, so I can do probably about 65 or 70, then I die. Lol.
Luckily muscles recuperate suprisingly fast, if you can do 50 pushups you can likely do 50 every hour or so, recuperation time can also be increased with training
I'm reading that a ton and I mean a ton of kids are getting stress fractures. Lots of parents complaining about it. Is there *ANYTHING* I can tell him in my letters that can help prevent this? He did run daily before going to boot, but it sounds like a ton of injuries are happening.
Lazaro lagunes funny I’m a 12N and you’ll be in the same company as my MOS in AIT lol but idk why really we do it in a bubble. Maybe because during winter it sucks balls and it’s not warm in there but it’s better than outside and summer probably keeps you out of the sun idk really
How does shopping work do you get to go out and buy new stuff like toothbrushes and razors or will you have to use the same one through all of basic training
was there any prior service soldiers there doing basic again? Im a sergeant and times have changed, been out for 4 years...how were they handled? ask your brother, im heading to ft jackson
Yes and they aren't treated really any different than other soldiers. That could of course change depending on the DS but for us if the DS knew you were prior service in any branch it was just like "Oh, ok".
chinobrown 15 no, a bunch of people didn't pass initially. The test is to see where your run is as and put you in a corresponding group going forward. You need to pass at the end of basic to graduate.
In my basic training, especially in my barrack you can. Some people woke up early to shower and conduct personal hygiene. Our wake up was 5am and go downstairs in formation by 5:45

1 year till I can enlist then 2 years till I can ship out after highschool, cant wait. And my best friend is graduating this year and shipping out to the marines this year, I'm gonna miss him❤❤
Hey man I have a dumb but serious question I have sensitive ears I love shooting guns but can't shoot with out ear protection Idk if it would be worth joining I want to but I probably wouldn't be no use my question is do you think I should join with my sensitive ears problem?
If you wake up late you won't have much time to brush your teeth, shave, or make your bunk. But most of all you'll be rushing to get downstairs and may forget either your PT belt and headgear. If you forget those you'll get the whole platoon in trouble.
You won't wake up late. There will be like 50 other guys getting up and rumbling around getting ready. Unless you can sleep through a jackhammer. Also, we were too busy and und3r constant supervision to ever have a blanket party. Everyone is too busy dealing with their own stuff to worry about you.

As I read this and see how physically fit you should be before you go (cause im barely pushing 8 mins on a mile) im fucked huh?
Timothy Ervin like he said this was back in 96’ PT isn’t as intense as it was then, you’ll be okay
As always thanks for the informative video!
Thanks!
On my way to basic right now, figured I’d watch a video before lol
Update? Hows life?
@@xyzcantcme8775 I’m a medic in the 82nd, it’s been both the best and worse decision I’ve ever made lol I’m glad I did it but I won’t be re enlisting
Serving with the 82nd now in Poland
Just got out of meps thanks for the videos on it it helped
Just run slow to get in c group😂
this really put things into perspective for me thank you!
Wake up, brush teeth, shave, grab canteen, formation, pt, change into OCPS, formation, breakfast. Formation, grab gear
Thanks for all the tips really helps
Seems pretty easy, only problem I'll have trouble with is probably sit ups
CBR RICK i would have trouble with push ups and pull ups
Watching these videos helps a lot since I'm shipping to basic in September I'm going to Fort Jackson
same here!
Jay Jeffers same here. early September
Jay Jeffers relaxin jackson
I leave this coming up week for fort Jackson
Heading to Fort Leonard Wood tomorrow morning for basic and ait 18 weeks 12november
Hezekiah Vantassel how was basic ? I leave next month .
Hey thanks you so much for the basic training details I leave in June and I'm so nervous @ Matt Ward
im joining MP ill will be in fort lenordwood MO in a few months i really like all of your videos they are really informative
Thanks!
How is it?
A piece of advice. Always sleep in your PT uniforms. You will always be in the proper uniform for PT.
James Hanlon
That's advice to have when you're in the actual operational army because when you're in basic and AIT you'll be sleeping in your PT uniforms anyway..
golfery: I’ve seen some trainees who tried to sleep in something other than their PT uniforms until a female drill instructor came into the platoon bay and smoked everyone because they were not in their PTs.
Hey Matt, can you do a video about what a typical weekend is like at AIT? I know they are all gonna be different but do you typically get to go off of base?
What time do you go to bed at if you wake up at 4:00 a.m?
Rayrayber 8 typically
2100
WOW!
OSUT in 2000 at Knox you were woken up by Pattons speech on a speaker and Drill sergeants yelling at you to beat your face
Thanks for all the info, hey If I end up joining the army reserve, can I become a police officer after basic training?
F*** the police
😱😱 my recruiter never told me anything about pullups. I leave for BCT soon @ Fort Leonard Wood - I now am a bit shook bc I wish I had more time. To learn all the varied pullups he has explained w/in this vid
Basic was Easy. High school basketball and football were about the same so it wasn't bad at all. I grew up in the country so waking up early was easy
Binging these videos in the next 4 years until I join after high school
I am shipping today 😂😂! This video helped me a lot
kabil Tamil hell yeah I leave in 11 days
How was it?
How was it?
You dead ?
I graduated from BCT already
Are men and women tested the same ? Obviously not for the combat test but for overall in basic ?
What rank are you, Matthew? Also. how many times per day in the Army would you do pushups? I can do a maximum of 50 pushups, but after I get to 45 is when it gets real hard, so I can do probably about 65 or 70, then I die. Lol.
Luckily muscles recuperate suprisingly fast, if you can do 50 pushups you can likely do 50 every hour or so, recuperation time can also be increased with training
Yeah what clay it shouldn't be that hard up at with a bit of training you know
He’s a second lieutenant because he went the officer program with ROTC
Can you shower before pt? In the morning?
I'm reading that a ton and I mean a ton of kids are getting stress fractures. Lots of parents complaining about it. Is there *ANYTHING* I can tell him in my letters that can help prevent this? He did run daily before going to boot, but it sounds like a ton of injuries are happening.
I want to know this too, Julie! My son is in Basic, now and I'm so worried!
@@tigress5212 stop worrying! They're becoming men not babies!
I did BCT in fort Leonard Wood and we did pt in a giant white tent with tar chips
BAD-_-COMPANY69 69 i know this is a month late but I’m shipping to fort Leonard Wood in a month for my basic training, can i ask a few questions ?
Lazaro lagunes sure
BAD-_-COMPANY69 69 what was ur MOS ? Mine is 91 Lima and I’m curious about the pt, why do it in a tent ?
Lazaro lagunes funny I’m a 12N and you’ll be in the same company as my MOS in AIT lol but idk why really we do it in a bubble. Maybe because during winter it sucks balls and it’s not warm in there but it’s better than outside and summer probably keeps you out of the sun idk really
Lazaro lagunes it’s a giant tent but we call it a PT bubble
THanks!
Just finished basic at FT Benning APLHA 2-58 STRENGTH AND HONOR
Hey, I used to have a shirt like that as well
What’s happens after breakfast? I’m guessing it’s around 6:30ish after that, right?
How does shopping work do you get to go out and buy new stuff like toothbrushes and razors or will you have to use the same one through all of basic training
What do you do on the weekend for pt? Or do you not do it on the weekend?
What is the foot ware during morning PT?
Thanks for the video. just curious... is it ok to wake up before 4am and goto the bathroom to shower/shave etc?
Question, is there anyone holding your feet down during the sit up PT test or is it all by yourself
Are you allowed to do weight training or do you do weight training during Basic or no?
You should put that fire alarm up above your door
Only if you feel like getting smoked for a year straight although you would be quite ready for the PT test after that would not recommend LOL
Lol bruh I just realized you lightweight look like Sgt Brodie from homeland, I'm shook. Good vids tho
So, it's recommended to do minimum 5 pull ups before PT
What exactly happens in formation? Once you make it to your duty stations is that still an everyday thing?
was there any prior service soldiers there doing basic again? Im a sergeant and times have changed, been out for 4 years...how were they handled? ask your brother, im heading to ft jackson
Yes and they aren't treated really any different than other soldiers. That could of course change depending on the DS but for us if the DS knew you were prior service in any branch it was just like "Oh, ok".
I appreciate it. That's the military for ya...gotta love it all the way...btw good videos brother..keep up the high speed
+blake1172 thanks bro, I will!
We had a former marine for a platoon leader.
what time do you need to do your 1 miler in to be in A group?
They go off of the 2 mile time at BCT. For us I think the cut off was 13:30 for the 2 mile time.
Oh ok thank you! I thought they went off of your 1-1-1 Assesment? so when is the first time they test your 2 mile run at BCT?
Andrew Smith when I was in Benning the initial groups were based off a 1 mile. I believe A group was 7:30 and below
Joe T so in order to start BCT you need to pass a 111 or a 222
chinobrown 15 no, a bunch of people didn't pass initially. The test is to see where your run is as and put you in a corresponding group going forward. You need to pass at the end of basic to graduate.
So u do this everyday?
+Bucket Bucket Monday-Saturday
PT is physical training right?
are you allowed to wake up at 3am and get ready so by the time its 4:30 you can chill lol
Alchamistoh you’re not supposed to. If a drill sergeant walks in and you’re getting ready you’ll get smoked
In my basic training, especially in my barrack you can. Some people woke up early to shower and conduct personal hygiene. Our wake up was 5am and go downstairs in formation by 5:45
@@blarstone9322 well then you got extremely lucky didn't you from what all I've heard that's not very common
we got up at 0430, in formation by 0435, stretch for 10 minutes, then run 5 miles
as a pg. do you get to pick your own fire guard time?
It just depends on how you decide the fireguard shifts but in my case yes I picked the shifts.
what are the weekends like?
I have no college experience. I am 26 i have just been working my ass off since i was out of school. The army has always been on my mind and im considering doing it but im concerned since i am 26
Just turned 30 and going to MEPS this week. lol
I'm 30, shipping next week
We had guys at the max age of 33.5 back in the day. Some of them had no problem. Depends on the person, regardless of age.
The amount of detail is phenomenal! It was just what I was looking for.
If you're waking up at 4am-ish what time are you put to sleep usually?
1 year till I can enlist then 2 years till I can ship out after highschool, cant wait. And my best friend is graduating this year and shipping out to the marines this year, I'm gonna miss him❤❤
Leaving for ft Benning on Tuesday (10/16/18) 19delta 😈
Hey man I have a dumb but serious question I have sensitive ears I love shooting guns but can't shoot with out ear protection Idk if it would be worth joining I want to but I probably wouldn't be no use my question is do you think I should join with my sensitive ears problem?
Shawn Smith homie earpro is required
If you wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom do you have to wake up your battle buddy to go with you?
What time exectly do you wake up in basic?
won't you get yelled at for dropping to your knees on your push ups?
Yes but you will also get yelled at for not breathing properly, not looking straight, and will get smoked for quieting.
Mike503 What is "quieting"
not sounding off
You’ll get yelled at for existing
is it only one set of everything?
Could you do a video on what happens if you wake up late? Also are blanket parties real?
If you wake up late you won't have much time to brush your teeth, shave, or make your bunk. But most of all you'll be rushing to get downstairs and may forget either your PT belt and headgear. If you forget those you'll get the whole platoon in trouble.
You won't wake up late. There will be like 50 other guys getting up and rumbling around getting ready. Unless you can sleep through a jackhammer. Also, we were too busy and und3r constant supervision to ever have a blanket party. Everyone is too busy dealing with their own stuff to worry about you.
I'm joining the AF, but ok.
@Miguel Cabrera lol
