    Always hated getting smoked by other platoons Ds, just feels like a step dad beating you instead of real dad, but loved the FEW times when our DS would tell other platoons DS'S to leave his platoon alone, made ya feel loved, lol

      In my BCT days if another platoon's DS had to smoke us, then ours would REALLY let us have it for making trouble for the Duty DS and embarrassing and dishonoring them. So we got smoked like 2.5 times.

    We had a drill sergeant that would sneak around the barracks in a uniform that didn’t have a drill sergeant patch, once someone saw him, he’d shush them before they yelled “AT EASE”. He would just randomly join in on conversations and sometimes people wouldn’t even realize it was him. I don’t think he ever smoked us for anything, I think he just wanted to talk to us privates about what’s been going on.

      This isn't really smoking related, but in AIT we had this one Drill Sgt. that had a reputation for crawling around in our barracks at night with NVG's on. I don't know WTH he was trying to accomplish. I think he just wanted to see if he could get away un noticed. He was otherwise pretty cool. Our AIT Drill Sgt.s were all pretty cool. Very tough, but also reasonable. We didn't get smoked often, but when we did, Oh Crap! Here comes hell.

    If the entire rest of your platoon is asleep, go to sleep. Dont be one of the few. You can be one of the many. Reason being, you're going to get smoked as a platoon anyways. If you see one or two people dozing off, wake them. Our entire company had to move out and bring everything down to the drill pad and that's where we slept until a 1LT from batallion came by and saw what we were doing. This was all because two female soldiers fell asleep in their bay during bay maintenance on their bunks. Those two soldiers got to move their entire bed down the flights of stairs and slept on their mattresses while we all slept on sleeping kits in the grass. Fun fun. I still remember their fucking names.

    We spent a half a day sprinting from the rifle range to the road and back, trying to get in formation before the time ran out with some front leaning rests thrown in and other ab workouts. The reason? We finished early, they were having trouble getting transport to come out, and they were bored. We also did the whole "quick change" routine. I swear BCT is scripted.

    One time, about an hour after we went to sleep, a drill sergeant snuck into our bay and found 2 girls sleeping in the same bed. He got pissed and proceed to make everyone stack their mattresses in the center of the bay, and then take them all down and make our beds perfectly. He made us repeat this over and over until about 03:30. Finally when we had all our mattresses stacked in the center for the last time, he told us to go to bed....on our cold hard bunks....and we had to wake up in an hour....

  • @chasemichonski7883

    I remember finishing the final PT test and final ruck and someone said "It's all downhill from here" during recovery week. Within 10 minutes we were breaking down our entire bay and setting it up outside, beds made and lockers squared away. EVERYTHING. Other companies marching by would look over and see us getting our "Bay" inspected. None of them laughed, they looked terrified because it looks like their DS was getting some ideas.

    The worst smoke session we had at basic was the midnight disco party. We were warned not to be awake writting letters at night. Some didn't listen. They got caught writing letters with their red lenses. We all got woken up every 45 minutes to get smoked in the assembly area with the lights off, blue lense, clear, and red lenses in our flash lights. It was the worst night we had there. Gotta love Sand Hill, ft Benning.

    One time when we got smoked, well into lights out, the Duty DS for the night had us doing "Side Straddle Hops" ( a four count jumping jack), I believe we did 500 reps. I had my full canteen in my left cargo pocket, as required, and that thing was banging into my left knee twice per every rep. So actually 2000 times. The next morning was a road march and as road guard I had that flash light in my left cargo pocket, as required, every step I made that thing was sliding ad digging a little groove into the side of my left knee exactly at the epicenter of that bruise. That was the worst part of the next few days. Not the smoking but the miles of scraping my leg with that damn flash light.

    Great story. That probably is the worst case study of the "smoking". You reminded me of a couple times in AIT when we had people get "moved out" of the barracks. Once another platoon had to move everything out on the lawn in an exact replica of how it is inside. Then back inside again. Another time it was just one guy. It was a weekend and apparently the Duty Drill didn't feel like mass punishing everyone over it. So I just remember coming back from lunch or something and here's this bunk, end table, locker with PT's hanging on it, everything including his boots staged under the bunk just like it was upstairs. I didn't stick around to see who it was or what else became of all that. That's a good time to not be home. Good times though.

    I still vividly remember grass drills -- done on the GRAVEL PT field. Drill sergeant was REALLY PO'd, and he REALLY gave it to us one morning! We had to cycle through a sequence of exercises, changing every time he blew his whistle. He'd curse at us and chew us out as we did those exercises. Then got to where he was blowing that whistle so fast we could barely switch from sit-ups position to push-ups, to leg lifts, to jumping jacks, etc. I don't even know how long it lasted. That gravel cut us to pieces!

    When I went through Air Force basic we had this drying area in the showers with a bench, our instructors weren’t allowed in there and it didn’t take long for trainees to duck in there and sleep or get out of getting smoked. Eventually we got caught and we spent half of the day doing bed drills. Then our evening TI showed up, she said she’s gonna treat us like Week 1 trainees, so pack it up stretch, then putting our dorms back together, a lot of getting smoked with push-ups, squats, and flutter kicks. Was a very wonderful experience for sure.

    We got smoked with our weapons for about 30ish minutes, then we had to GI the bay, and when my drill sergeant found dust in the vents, we got evicted to the CTA. We then got smoked until and after dinner chow, until lights out. The whole thing lasted a good 2-3 hours.

    I have a story from Air Force basic that is funny now, but at the time I was super scared, lol. It was right before bedtime. My T.I. had us all in the dayroom sitting on the floor while he talked to us. He had just finished handing out letters from home. I guess that as I was looking at my letter I was smiling. My T.I. asked, "What are you smiling at, Flowers?". Without thinking, I simply answered, "Sir, I didn't know I was". You could take that two ways, right? Everyone gasped as soon as I said it, and then there was dead silence. They probably thought they were about to witness a murder, lol. As soon as it came out of my mouth, I knew how it sounded. It sounded like I was arguing and smarting off. I truly was innocent in my intention, but I knew what it sounded like. My T.I. gave me a death stare. At first he looked shocked that I had said something like that, but then in a matter of a second his look of shock turned to one of intense anger. He glared at me but didn't say anything. He just stared at me for what felt like an eternity. Finally, he went on talking about whatever he had been talking about before, but he continued to stare over at me as if to say, "Just wait, Flowers, just wait". I was sitting on the floor and hoping that the floor underneath me would fall out where I could get out of there, lol. We had just taken showers, but I probably needed another one because I was sweating through my clothes. Remember how you felt when you were a kid, and you were in trouble? I felt like I was outside the principal's office awaiting my fate, lol. You know how when you know punishment is coming you can feel the heat inside you coming to the surface? Certainly in basic training I had been in trouble before. My T.I. had certainly disciplined me before, made me do push-ups and other exercises and yelled at me, etc. However, what made this time different was that I knew this was more serious. This was showing disrespect, being insubordinate, etc. It didn't matter that I was innocent. It only mattered that he THOUGHT that I was disrespecting him. I didn't know what the punishment would be, but I knew it would be worse than anything I had experienced so far. I really thought he was going to rip me a new one.Towards the end, I was looking down at the floor. Suddenly I hear my T.I. say, "Look at me!". I looked up, and he was staring right at me. I thought to myself, "here it comes". Instead, he dismissed us and told us to go to bed. He never said another word about it. In fact, he never SAID anything. All he did was look at me and make me think that something was coming. The next day he was back to normal. Well, normal for basic training, lol. He wasn't glaring at me in the same way. I cannot tell you the relief I felt as I laid in my bunk that night! I've often wondered what he was actually thinking. I've wondered if he was really even mad or just pretending to be, if he knew that I truly wasn't trying to smart off. Or, if he had intended to discipline me but then decided to let me off. I would sure love to know!

      I've heard about drill sergeants doing that. Apparently some of them find mental punishment better than physical because physical can only last so long. Mental could go for 1 day or 1 week or longer basically however long they wanna keep you on edge I'd rather be smoked right there then keep waiting and waiting like a wounded animal waiting for them to finally put me out of my misery. I haven't been to BCT I'm currently waiting for a waiver.

    • @julieflowers5104
      @julieflowers5104 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, all the times before that he had immediately dropped me for push-ups or some form of physical exercise. I kept waiting and waiting, but no punishment ever came. So, you're right, that WAS the punishment. The mental anguish of waiting, anticipating what was to come.

Sometimes you will be partly responsible, most times it will be others but you will get smoked a LOT at first and less as you start really working together and working as a team and making your DS or equivalent PO's proud. Eventually they might even just smoke the ones that screwed up. At first though, you will all pay for everything. MOAHAHAHAHA!

    When I joined back in 2018 I signed a 6/8 year contract with the sc national guard, i been motivated to serve my country and to be the best I can be as a soldier to follow in my dad footsteps. I graduated basic and ait, and arrived to my unit. I have never seen such miserable fake unprofessional people and the leadership is a cult they don’t look out for anyone but themselves and the ones that kiss there ass, also the females. Paperwork never gets signed and lost, and the will not transfer you to another unit or release you to active duty. Been trying for years. But I embraced the suck and used my benefits to get my associates and bachelors degree, now I’m just milking my last year in in hopes to join airforce or active army hopefully I don’t get kicked out before I get out

    When I was in BCT they called it 11B syndrome. As soon as your ass hits the bench, you start nodding off. We had all these Army Values classes and it was just all about keeping each other awake. We were constantly nudging each other to keep ourselves from falling asleep. Those that couldn't stay awake were given something to keep them awake. They were either standing at the back of the room holding a pair of canteens straight armed out in front of them, or they were taken outside to be smoked. Every time we sat down, without fail, we had that problem.

    • @TetraSamurai
      @TetraSamurai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was by far the worst part of basic. I can deal with getting smoked, the mind games, missing home. But when it came to lack of sleep, I really struggled. Nothing else made me want to be at home in my own bed or second guess my decision besides that. Everytime I would sit down, doesn’t matter where, I would start nodding off. It was too the point where I didn’t even knew I nodded off until a battle buddy woke me up. Then 5 seconds later, nod off again. That fatigue is something I have still never felt to this day. I’ve been to work hungover with 3 hours of sleep and still haven’t been that tired. I was nodding off at the range, we all were. Weird thing is, 30th AG reception was the worst in that regard due to all the sitting we were doing, and the fact they made us stay awake all night the first night and all day the next.
