Always loved history myself.Was lucky to have a great civil war teacher in high school Mr.Hird he wrote a book about the war if my memory serves me right.That guy would go into character talking about the war it was great he had a different voice for each general.Even through in the Irish accent for a general like Phil Sheridan. Told us were the term Hooker originated. The list goes on and on.Later on I always liked reading or watching movies on the subject.Even made it to Gettysburg when I was working in PA.Then when I ran across your videos being interested in metal detecting and having just purchased a at pro to learn more about them.Here you are pulling these civil war artifacts out of the ground and rivers showing us all the actual implements used by the soldiers.To cool man keep up the good work.In my mind your videos would have fit right in with Mr.Hirds class as very informative information as to how these armies fought and lived during that time.

You have a terrific eye for finding just about anything no matter how small or unidentifiable. Can you make any suggestions for descent metal detecting clubs in Maryland I am in Harford county. Can't help but ask i want to magnet fish in stream beds, do you always have to ask permission? Or do you just wing it, park on the side of the road and go into the woods as long as you don't obviously intrude on private property. Just don't know how to to about it without getting arrested. Hope you can shed some light. So glad you have such respect for the wildlife and the environment. Thanks so much for any advice you may give.
Sounds like you experience the "pristine moment" of the reenactor, but in a slightly different way. We do 18th century reenacting, and there is that moment when you just feel like you've traveled back in time when you are wearing their clothing, doing their chores the way they would have done them. Sounds like you are getting the same kind of moment from finding the things they actually touched.
Mr. Ouimette I love all of your videos. They're so fun to watch. I live in a small town established in the 1880's. There is a spot up the street from me where on of the old houses were built and I detect it. Although the clay is very hard. DAMN EAST TEXAS RED CLAY! Do you have any tips for digging an old house site or dealing with clay??

***** I dig every signal. The hard red clay of East Texas is not all the different from the rock hard dirt here in Northern Virginia. We just don't always have the red color, sometimes it is gray and sometimes tan, other times it is more of a white mix. You also have to deal with the hot rocks and coal! LOL It is just part of the fun of this wonderful hobby. But I do agree, dig all the targets and really listen for those very faint signals as those are the deeper and smaller items. I went 9.5 inches for an 1854 $1.00 Gold Dollar! It was just a beep and then nothing! I sure am glad that I dug it up!
***** My Gold Dollar was found with the Whites XLT and when I found it I thought my detector was going bad on me. I was walking on a deer trail in Leesburg, VA and got a signal that rang up as a Penny/Dime and just as soon as it showed up on the screen it was gone! I went back across the spot and it did the same thing over and over. I figured that I might as well dig it out as I was not finding a lot of anything that day. I dug a 8 inch plug about 4 inches down and turned the plug over and 'Nothing in the plug', once again it showed penny/dime then nothing! So I proceeded to dig another plug and klunk! I reached into the hole and pulled out a brick! OK I thought maybe there is something in the brick. I scanned the brick and Nothing! I scanned the hole again and it showed penny/dime and then nothing! I then pulled another 8 inch plug that was about 4.5 inches think and turned it over and there to my amazed eyes was a tiny gold colored item that sure looked like a gold coin. I scooped it up and stared at it and tuned it every which kind of ways that I could and decided it must be a US Gold Dollar! LOL I did the Happy Dance like no other ever! This is one reason I tell everyone to dig every signal as you just never know for sure. Yes all these fancy features can tell you something but deep and tiny signals tend to throw off all detectors. Happy TH'ing!
***** I am sure that there are more in there. Now that I have the Whites TDI-SL, I need to get back and give it another going over. The site also gave up a 1680 Spanish Half Reale, and a US Breast Plate, and a bunch of .44 cal pistol bullets, camp lead, and one of my oddest finds, two .58 cal bullets that had been beat into muzzle cover plugs. The best part was that whoever was making them made both at the same time as the tops of the plugs have a bend in them that fit together. This is a very promising area in Leesburg.
I've been detecting for quite a while but I almost always search by myself. I've come up with my own way of doing things and the gear I use is based on what has worked for me in the past. However I'm always looking for a better way and I'm always interest in learning something new. If you hunt with others you might pick up things here and there from your buddies. When you're the solo hunter you have to be bright enough to figure this stuff out on your own. The evidence has shown that I'm not. Thanks to you I'm now using a modified version of your dog leash detector strap and I've also managed to find a fiberglass handled trenching shovel with the correct bend. Thanks for that and thanks for posting this new video. Interesting interview.

Did you ever find any model boats in like a pond? Theres a small pond near me that I know for sure has a few model boats and an RC submarine that I want to retrieve but dont know how. Motors in the boats I am sure are metal. The pond is only like 2.5 to 3 feet deep, but the water is cloudy, what would you reccomend for retrieving the boats. I live on the hill that the Lena Lenape lived and found a small doll made from clay from them. If you ever want to metal detect on my proprty in NJ your welcome to. Love your videos. I also found a lot of neat things in the shells on the beaches in NJ near the jettis, in the shells.

I was 5 years old and was playing in the dirt under an old oak tree and found a old gold pocket watch, which my older brother promptly stole. But I know what you mean about when you find things and thinking about who dropped it , how long ago, what were they doing . That's thrilling finding something that you read that was written by a solider, that's why I like to dig..it's the same way I find my stuff, I go in old flea markets and find these old dairies and history books and all kinds of information...I'm just now looking into old post cards.
That has got to be the most interesting thing to hear you recount about reading a soldiers memories of watching cannonball rolling into the river. Going to that very river and finding the cannonball that the soldier most likely was giving account for. Brings that cannonballs history full circle.

***** The previous guy to own it dumped rocks and dirt everywhere (10-18 years ago) because it was originally a bit swampy. I tried metal detecting there a year or two ago with a crappy $75 detector my grandpa got a while ago, and that was all I found. Rocks, nails, pig bones, and pieces of wire. Maybe if I dug down an extra 2 ft. :P

***** hey I went creek walking once and pulled up a rock and it had these little worm like maggot things squirming on the bottom side of it. Do you know what it was? There was a deer about 300 feet upstream but these weren't maggots they kinda looked like white grains of rice but like a leech.

I walk in and think, 'Over here on this side of the field is where the encampment was!' Sure as the Sun comes up in the East 9 times out of 10 I start finding relics. I don't know if it is the lay of the land, or just a feeling but I get it almost everytime I go to a new site. Love your videos. Sure would enjoy joining you sometime if only to assist in helping you remove all the scrap metal from the sites. I am also a recycler and sell all my scrap metal. ***** When did you serve and where? Just would be interested if we ever crossed paths. I was stationed at Krabbenloch Kaserne, in Ludwigsburg, Germany, A Co. 34th Signal BN, 1971 - 1976 then in the US Army Reserve in Springfield, MO 3rd of the 75th Field Artillery, then back to Augsburg, Germany in HQs Co. 534th Signal Company 1977 - 1978, then reassigned to Schobstodal Kaserne in Klosterlechfeld, Germany. We were attached to a Field Artillery Unit that was co-located with the Bundesburg (German Army) from 1978 - 1979. I next was reassigned to the 2nd 31st Infantry in Fort Ord, CA 1979 - 1981. I was the BN Motor Sgt as an E-5 as all the E-6 and E-7s we had refused to take the job. I ETS'd just before the 7th Inf went to Panama. I then went to the US Air Force Reserve in Sacramento, McClellan AFB in the 407th CLSS. Our unit did Battle Damage and recovery of downed aircraft. I worked on the F-111s that bombed Libya, and spoke with several of the Officers that flew this Mission. We also did Depot level repair of the F-4s prior to them being deployed to the Air National Guard, and the A-10s. Those were our main aircraft that we worked on most. Thank you for your Service to America and the US Military!
***** I know that feeling. There is actually a website for the Stuttgart, Germany area as there were something like 20 or so different Kasernes around Stuttgart. All are now abandoned or have been sold off by the German Government. Krabbenloch was one that was torn down and now has a highrise building on it. I had always hopped to make it back there and take my 2 youngest Sons with me so I could show them how we lived but that is not to be. The two Guesthouses that were outside the front gate are still there but they have changed hands and I believe they have changed names as well. There is a young German Man (early to mid 20s or so) that goes from one Kaserne to another and takes videos of what is there now. Really to sad to watch more than once as what few places I recall seeing one was of a beautiful Church with lots of stained glass and now the stained glass is falling apart or has had rocks tossed through them. Most of the buildings are over grown but this guy goes inside to show some of the 'Grunt' markings like 'Spit shine those shoes for inspection!' and other funny things that I have forgotten about after all these years. I watch some of the videos and smile, then have to shake my head as my past is fading away. I guess it is the same for all those Civil War Soldiers when after the war they would return to the battlefields to find them being plowed and planted as if nothing had ever happened there. So is life I guess. I only did 5 years in Germany but I loved it. I did not care so much for my Army life but would never trade anything for the experiences I had. I wish you well and look forward to more of your videos.
***** You sure missed a golden opportunity that is for sure! I was on my second tour of Germany and had a cheap metal detector at the time, a Jetco Mustang. I found so many coins, bullets, and buttons that I could fill both of my front pockets of my fatigue pants every time I went out. I found a Nazi Belt Buckle and the best part it still had some of the original green paint on it. I also found a Tag Der Arbeit, (Day of Work) Metal with a mans name on the back with the city name. I also dug a WWI helmet from the French or Belgium Army. My worst find came from Giesing, in Munich, that was a 40 pound bomb that had been dropped on a group of 14 Nazi tanks that were attempting to escape into the wood line. The German Man who told us the story said in late 1944 a pair of US P-38s dropped a cluster bomb on these Nazi tanks and that he could still hear the screams of the Tankers as the bomb was white phosphor and only one tanker was able to get out of the tank but he burnt to death. I found a lot of buttons, some were from Nazi uniforms as they have a pebbly texture to them. Many coins were found some as old as the 1700 and 1800s. Most of the coins were early 1900s. I found hundreds of live rounds which I took to our local EOD for proper disposal. They very quickly got to hate me as I forced them to take care of them. I did find an aluminum canteen that I found out was from a Nazi Soldier. We had an E-6 that had a Whites Detector but I do not know what model, and he found a very nice Silver and Ruby necklace. The only thing missing from the necklace was the center stone which had to be very large. I just wished that I had a better detector at the time as I was finding most of my finds at less than 6 inches. I am sure that there are just tons more items to be found all over the area.

Thanks to you I'm now using a modified version of your dog leash detector strap and I've also managed to find a fiberglass handled trenching shovel with the correct bend. Did you ever find any model boats in like a pond? Theres a small pond near me that I know for sure has a few model boats and an RC submarine that I want to retrieve but dont know how. Motors in the boats I am sure are metal. The pond is only like 2.5 to 3 feet deep, but the water is cloudy, what would you reccomend for retrieving the boats. I live on the hill that the Lena Lenape lived and found a small doll made from clay from them. If you ever want to metal detect on my proprty in NJ your welcome to. Love your videos. I also found a lot of neat things in the shells on the beaches in NJ near the jettis, in the shells.
I live near Morristown NJ, a lot of revolutionary war history, and there are a few streams near there as well would love to see what you might find.

I was 5 years old and was playing in the dirt under an old oak tree and found a old gold pocket watch, which my older brother promptly stole. But I know what you mean about when you find things and thinking about who dropped it , how long ago, what were they doing . That's thrilling finding something that you read that was written by a solider, that's why I like to dig..it's the same way I find my stuff, I go in old flea markets and find these old dairies and history books and all kinds of information...I'm just now looking into old post cards.

That has got to be the most interesting thing to hear you recount about reading a soldiers memories of watching cannonball rolling into the river. Going to that very river and finding the cannonball that the soldier most likely was giving account for. Brings that cannonballs history full circle.

All my farm has is rocks, nails, and wire.
***** The previous guy to own it dumped rocks and dirt everywhere (10-18 years ago) because it was originally a bit swampy. I tried metal detecting there a year or two ago with a crappy $75 detector my grandpa got a while ago, and that was all I found. Rocks, nails, pig bones, and pieces of wire. Maybe if I dug down an extra 2 ft. :P

Hi Is Aquachigger your nickname? Chiggers aren't really much fun, I got about 60 of them on my legs picking blackberries in Ohio. never heard of them before, we don't have them in Saskatchewan. ***** hey I went creek walking once and pulled up a rock and it had these little worm like maggot things squirming on the bottom side of it. Do you know what it was? There was a deer about 300 feet upstream but these weren't maggots they kinda looked like white grains of rice but like a leech.

***** Hi I know the feeling about getting to a site and 'Knowing' that something is there. I get 'Vibes' on many of the sites that I search. I walk in and think, 'Over here on this side of the field is where the encampment was!' Sure as the Sun comes up in the East 9 times out of 10 I start finding relics. I don't know if it is the lay of the land, or just a feeling but I get it almost everytime I go to a new site. Love your videos. Sure would enjoy joining you sometime if only to assist in helping you remove all the scrap metal from the sites. I am also a recycler and sell all my scrap metal. I believe in cleaning up the environment as a thank you to the property owner allowing me to search their property. Keep the great videos coming!

***** When did you serve and where? Just would be interested if we ever crossed paths. I was stationed at Krabbenloch Kaserne, in Ludwigsburg, Germany, A Co. 34th Signal BN, 1971 - 1976 then in the US Army Reserve in Springfield, MO 3rd of the 75th Field Artillery, then back to Augsburg, Germany in HQs Co. 534th Signal Company 1977 - 1978, then reassigned to Schobstodal Kaserne in Klosterlechfeld, Germany. We were attached to a Field Artillery Unit that was co-located with the Bundesburg (German Army) from 1978 - 1979. I next was reassigned to the 2nd 31st Infantry in Fort Ord, CA 1979 - 1981. I was the BN Motor Sgt as an E-5 as all the E-6 and E-7s we had refused to take the job. I ETS'd just before the 7th Inf went to Panama. I then went to the US Air Force Reserve in Sacramento, McClellan AFB in the 407th CLSS. Our unit did Battle Damage and recovery of downed aircraft. I worked on the F-111s that bombed Libya, and spoke with several of the Officers that flew this Mission. We also did Depot level repair of the F-4s prior to them being deployed to the Air National Guard, and the A-10s. Those were our main aircraft that we worked on most. Thank you for your Service to America and the US Military!
***** I know that feeling. There is actually a website for the Stuttgart, Germany area as there were something like 20 or so different Kasernes around Stuttgart. All are now abandoned or have been sold off by the German Government. Krabbenloch was one that was torn down and now has a highrise building on it. I had always hopped to make it back there and take my 2 youngest Sons with me so I could show them how we lived but that is not to be. The two Guesthouses that were outside the front gate are still there but they have changed hands and I believe they have changed names as well. There is a young German Man (early to mid 20s or so) that goes from one Kaserne to another and takes videos of what is there now. Really to sad to watch more than once as what few places I recall seeing one was of a beautiful Church with lots of stained glass and now the stained glass is falling apart or has had rocks tossed through them. Most of the buildings are over grown but this guy goes inside to show some of the 'Grunt' markings like 'Spit shine those shoes for inspection!' and other funny things that I have forgotten about after all these years. I watch some of the videos and smile, then have to shake my head as my past is fading away. I guess it is the same for all those Civil War Soldiers when after the war they would return to the battlefields to find them being plowed and planted as if nothing had ever happened there. So is life I guess. I only did 5 years in Germany but I loved it. I did not care so much for my Army life but would never trade anything for the experiences I had. I wish you well and look forward to more of your videos.
***** You sure missed a golden opportunity that is for sure! I was on my second tour of Germany and had a cheap metal detector at the time, a Jetco Mustang. I found so many coins, bullets, and buttons that I could fill both of my front pockets of my fatigue pants every time I went out. I found a Nazi Belt Buckle and the best part it still had some of the original green paint on it. I also found a Tag Der Arbeit, (Day of Work) Metal with a mans name on the back with the city name. I also dug a WWI helmet from the French or Belgium Army. My worst find came from Giesing, in Munich, that was a 40 pound bomb that had been dropped on a group of 14 Nazi tanks that were attempting to escape into the wood line. The German Man who told us the story said in late 1944 a pair of US P-38s dropped a cluster bomb on these Nazi tanks and that he could still hear the screams of the Tankers as the bomb was white phosphor and only one tanker was able to get out of the tank but he burnt to death. I found a lot of buttons, some were from Nazi uniforms as they have a pebbly texture to them. Many coins were found some as old as the 1700 and 1800s. Most of the coins were early 1900s. I found hundreds of live rounds which I took to our local EOD for proper disposal. They very quickly got to hate me as I forced them to take care of them. I did find an aluminum canteen that I found out was from a Nazi Soldier. We had an E-6 that had a Whites Detector but I do not know what model, and he found a very nice Silver and Ruby necklace. The only thing missing from the necklace was the center stone which had to be very large. I just wished that I had a better detector at the time as I was finding most of my finds at less than 6 inches. I am sure that there are just tons more items to be found all over the area.
