I almost forgot to tell you, Over the past weekend My buddy Steve and I went to a new spot on our creek. Almost as soon as we got in the water, Steve finds a 1971 dollar with my Mine lab 305. He was so excited I know he is hooked now...lol Of course we didn't take the cameras that day. I found a clad dime. Lots of broken glass in that creek. I used the method you described using the Garrett pin pointer and it worked well. Thanks for the tips Beau.
Here is a suggestion for the big magnet at the end of your pick handle. Try a PVC pipe cap that fits over the magnet. Glue a piece of flat metal in the bottom of the cap so the magnet will grab it. Rough up the two surfaces to be glued if possible. A good, sticky and hard setting silicone caulk should work well. This gives you a magnetic cap that will not come off or blow out of the back of your truck. You could also wrap a few rounds of electrical tape around the outside of the cap is you want it to be softer but the wall thickness of the plastic cap might be enough to reduce the attraction of the magnet to your truck's paint job. Hope this helps.
Good info. We can't hunt the water here but got permission from a lady we met in upper middle part of the state that owns 100 acres with a river that an old road went down to and we're going there when the weather and the snakes cool down and hunt that farm. Definitely going to try out that river.
PC Super Epoxy is what I have used for various projects over the years. It's about $5 and comes in a syringe-type two-part applicator. Squeeze it out, mix it and apply it. I've used on metal, wood, plastic, fixed countless toys, a fishing rod reel seat, and even use it to fill holes up to 3/4". It's completely workable when cured. You can cut, grind, drill it, etc. It cures to a pale beige color. The stuff if awesome.

The first pick you showed is a Hodan pick made in Dewey AZ.Great picks,bean using them for twenty plus years.The bad news is the owner/maker closed up shop and retired.Hodan picks are no more.

If you were to heat the tips of the cheap picks, heat them to dull red and quench with used motor oil. It will harden the steel but not brittle. Thank you for your encouragement of the hobby

I'd say those pick heads are probably made from old plough disc's, tempered steel, as I know a bloke locally who makes them & in a similar shape; anything hand-made will beat at least 80% of whats on the market! Great video, happy hunting, cheers.
I have a Jobe 48 inch sluice. Its very well made and ran about $130.00 if I remember right. I also got the high banker box for it. Take a look at them and see what you think.
Wish I could've learned stuff from you about 5 years ago when I started detecting. I'm sure It would've paid off bigtime being that I live in Southern Maryland. I have detected alot around the shorelines here but the creeks and streams are on my list for this fall/winter. I don't like ticks, spiders, snakes, etc. Lol. Another great video Beau, thanks! The reason I'm posting today is because I have a dilemma. After darn near 2400 bucks I ran into something I did not expect. I can't gain permission from ANYONE. I have asked locals, city parks departments and even churches. I give em the sad hound-dog eyes and plee my case and still NO.even gotten dressed up so I don't look like a wierdo. I'm a clean shaven, educated 37 year old and not sure what I'm doing wrong. 23 different entities in 3 weeks, all NO!
10 years since this comment, and people are even weirder. I've had the police called on me for just knocking doors twice. People are asshats. I've even offered them everything I would have found, and not only no, but jerks about it.

Beau, FYI Bunk is now selling just the heads of the picks. I was thinking about making my own handle but how do I determine how long the handle should be? I'm also asking this just in case I decide to buy the whole pick from bunk. I do like the idea of your plastic pipe handle, how did you attach it to the pick head? Thank you for the advice and all the great videos, I seem to watch them and forget about all the other stuff I am doing. I need to make myself go out and start metal detecting. I also wanted to let you know that I have problems with my legs and can't walk a lot , however if I am in water it takes the weight off my legs and makes it easy for me to get around. That is why I am so interested in water hunting instead of land detecting. Thank you for enabling me to be able to pursue my hobby. Stuart

The major problem with my legs is that if I'm in water it takes my weight off the legs and lessens the pain, whereas if I am on land , my legs hurt after a while because I am walking on them and they are the getting full weight of my body. I do appreciate your concern and I will try both ways. I'm not spending a lot of money on equipment because the Picks can be used on land as well as water. your videos about making your own equipment are very valuable and will save me money. I've been following your underwater videos with major interest and I just have to ask a question. I've noticed on multiple occasions when using the magnet on the bottom of your pick, that several times after retrieving the object from the magnet, you've set the pick down in such a way that the handle has leaned down allowing the magnet to come into direct contact with the control housing of your Garrett. I've always thought that strong magnets can do nasty things to electronic circuits. Am I misinformed as to this? I would be concerned that a strong magnetic field could actually erase the eproms on the control board. Does the magnet not hurt the coil or the control circuit of the detector?
I always enjoy your videos, strange when you consider I dont even have a metal detector, yet. Hopefully next year... I do however like finding stuff...... One question, when you drilled out the bottom of that shell, did you cover your ears, just in case ??
