Mount Marcy, Skylight & Gray Peak In The Adirondack Mountains

  • Marcy/skylight/gray are broken out... It was eventless up until the Y junction where left goes to Haystack and right goes to Marcy.
    I geared up for long exposure. Going up to Marcy with instantaneously knee-high snow drifts and 1 foot of snow most of the way. It eventually turn into a hard icy crust. I made it to the Summit and I worked my way over Marcy knowing that nobody had done that trail in quite some time. I checked the last few days in the log books.
    The second I got down near the tree line the snow was up to my waist. I worked my way down very slowly using the GPS constantly to make sure I was on route. I went off route once and I fell in a spruce trap that one up to my head it was horrifying. Anyhow I managed to get myself out and find the trail again.. I was solo and this was something that I should’ve never done but I did because I know my limits and I trust my gear and I spent a lot of time in the mountains. Anyhow . I continued working my way down through waist high snow till eventually making it to the bottom.. No one had touched any of the trails in that area since the recent snow because it was 4 feet of fresh powder everywhere. I slowly worked my way up to skylight and back down where I met a group who had followed my tracks down Marcy to the 4 way. They took the lead across Lake tear of the clouds and Seeing them made my day. Anyhow none of them we’re going to do skylight or gray. We got over near Gray and again I had to go in through 4 feet of fresh snow and slowly work my way up to the summit. It was a slow and tedious process. Stuff that I have only heard of in stories. It took me 1:45 minutes to get up to gray Summit.. keep in mind I am an extremely fast-paced and athletic Hiker. Gray is .3 to the summit.. that’s 35 min a tenth!!!! Slowly but surely with GPS guidance I made my way up and found the summit sign level with the ground. This was the hardest day of my life.

      Well, this was two Winters ago. Last winter I did a single season winter Catskill 35, then drove over to New Hampshire, and did a single season winter 48 as well. This winter, I only had plans of possibly going to Maine and finishing the 14 high peaks in Maine for the winter which would officially finish my winter 115 but I’m really not sure I just care to do it right now. I might not do much this winter at all to be honest.

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll tell you why I love it so much. All your seam gets directly routed down or straight out and nothing goes up and accumulates on the goggles. With buffs the steam goes up and fogs the goggles which could cause potentially an extremely dangerous situation of limited visibility. Just a life hack that I’ve learned from my time in the mountains. Always use handwarmers at the car for every winter hike and if your goggles ever have an issue you can use the handwarmers to melt and clear and dry the ice from the goggles as it sucks away the moisture

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In all honesty with all the winter hiking I have done. It’s not so much what mountain or the steepness of the grade that gives you the butt slides it’s the weather conditions. Sometimes you sit down and you just don’t go anywhere and sometimes you sit down and you slide for a mile. The best butt Sliding I have ever done was when it got warm one day, the snow got really soft on the surface And then got freezing cold again and the mountains recovered with an icy crust.. I slid all the way down Algonquin and I also slid all the way down Street and Nye..
      I have quite a few winter Vlogs with some epic but sliding footage. Those included.. but I definitely don’t think of Marcy when I think of butt sliding.. Most of the Marcy Trail is very timid and not steep enough for sliding. The back of Marcy towards skylight you might get a little slide out of!

    You need to be very careful and respect the mountains as things will go south on you in a hurry. I really don;t like or want to preach, however there is a saying as I relate it to a pilot quip. There are bold pilots and old pilots but no old bold pilots. You will think you have the ability to endure but this is a false flag. We all want the same thing to enjoy the outdoors and hike safely. This comment is not for you as much as those who set out that may not have your ability. Be safe.

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Sibalski I completely and totally agree with you 100%. If I knew what I was going to be getting into before I started I probably would’ve waited for some other people to join. I absolutely don’t agree with hiking solo in the mountains in the winter but I do trust myself enough and because I hike often enough I definitely know my abilities and what I could handle. I hiked 53 miles in 16 hours and 45 minutes in the summer. So I know I’m capable of a lot. I know I could handle 10,000 feet again in a day. I finished this hike strong. And even had enough energy to Trail run out.. Only went through half my food and 3/4 of my water but then I have a stove to melt snow for water if I needed.
