I highly recommend a sit-pad of some sort as well for winter hikes.
When I stop for lunch, if I'm not sitting on something with some insulation, I lose all of my warmth really quickly.
Not only that, but you usually end up with a wet backside, which can take a long time to dry if you are wearing non waterpoof pants.
More importantly, in case of any emergency, where you can not move, insulation from the ground is perhaps even more important than from above.
And finally, it can be used as part of a splint.

Great info and the background scenery is incredible, wow. I also noticed animal tracks in the snow. I use waterproof rechargeable hand warmers that also serve as power Banks and I also switch to waterproof rechargeable plasma lighters. In an emergency all I need is a small solar cell and I can have indefinite heat and indefinite fire source. Canada.
Hey, Justin, what do you think about throwing in about a 500ml pot to put on that fire if you're caught out in the dark? I've learned that a hot cup of coffee or tea, or anything hot, can clear the mind and step the resolve to exit a late situation or internally warm an unexpected overnight.

U can, but not directly. I'm from Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦 and often order stuff from REi in the US, but during COVID the Canada/US land border shut down, so parcel forwarding companies popped up to fill the gap, so it's just a matter of finding and using similar services in the UK, right?

@@billb5732 finding them is as easy as going to their respective websites, but ordering is challenging. Here in Vancouver 🇨🇦 they won't ship direct, u need to find a re-shipper. The same thing happened with Bellingham REi shipping to Vancouver 🇨🇦 during the pandemic when they closed the US/Canada border land crossing. Normally, we setup an account with a shipping company near the border to accept our packages, and we'd drive down once a month or every few months and pick them up, FREE US shipping, but then pandemic closed things, so they'd forward them to us for another fee. So ur paying shipping, customs, duty, exchange & VAT for the UK. Plus re-shipper fees, got it?
@@billb5732 if ur close to Vancouver 🇨🇦 u can "click & collect" at the Metrotown Pop-up store, they'll hold ur items for longer than a week if u let them know what's what. Hopefully, they'll follow REi with holding for up to a year!
Justin, my good sir. I have a dumb question for you. Can you use a “winter” sleeping pad in the summer months. Or a high rated “R-Value” sleeping pad in the summer months?
I would swap for a winter rated quilt, as it's easier to regulate ur warmth, stick a leg out or open up & use like a blanket, or if it's really warm lie on top of everything with light base layers or nothing at all😅 if it's still buggy, zip up ur bug bivy but use a secret weapon, a battery operated fan & wet camp towel & evaporation to cool u off (backcountry a/c!)

Condensation inside of a bivy or a sleeping bag does not make you cold, the condensation, or your sweat, is the same temperature as the inside of the bag. If you get out of your bag and you’re in a breeze, then, yes, you will get cold, but you won’t get hypothermia inside a wet bag or bivvy unless it gets cold inside the bag from extreme temps outside the bag.
Apparently the Motorola Defy does not work in Canada unless you are close to the border. This from a chart on their website. Your experience?
It does depend on the location since it isn't officially launched in Canada yet
