  • Spaced Repetition is critical to effective learning, but how can you apply it to your own study routine? After quickly going through the science behind spaced repetition, we head into the 4 techniques that I use to build the power of spaced repetition into my own study schedule. This video is inspired by ‪@aliabdaal‬ 's much-viewed spaced repetition video, with an updated approach to how it can be practically implemented in our day-to-day studies and a reflection on the way Ali and I build spaced repetition into our revision in the run-up to exams 🧐

This is so so helpful, the way you break it down into practical and achievable steps, the way you explain the whole concept clearly and from an entirely new perspective (every other video I see pretty much only covers flashcards, which are great but not really applicable for most topics), really, the whole video is absolutely great. I truly value the high quality of your content, so thank you!

I don't comment very often but I have to admit. I think this is THE best video of studying I've seen so far (and I've seen quite a few). I'm currently in medical school and throughout the years I've tried multiple studying techniques, tried to use some that I found online and others I've come up with, but this video really breaks it down to what is really important. You show examples, use graphs, the quality of the video is amazing. I truly believe you are going to help loads of people and you're gonna grow so much in this platform. Thank you so much for the video, I watched it fully, subscribed and turned on the notifications my dude. Brilliant job

I must say, I agree with the comments here! I love how you give specific examples on how you apply the principles of spaced repetition. I also definitely love the practicality of all this. As an engineering student who chose to pursue medicine, the approach needed for studying is very different. I always look for youtube videos on study tips but I think I made the mistake of checking ONLY videos from med students. I did learn a lot from those videos but I am able to "connect" with this video the most -- a video by a law student! Thanks a lot!

I really appreciate your work; the quality of your videos is awesome. I'm a self learner and I'm trying to use active recall and spaced repetition to my study sessions. Your tips are very useful, but I'd like you to talk a little bit slowly, because at certain points you talked so fast that I wasn't able to follow you and I got lost at many key points of the video. I suppose this doesn't represent an issue for native english speakers, but as spanish speaker, it can result very hard and even frustrating. Out of that, please continue with your YV channel. Both you and Ali are right! It depends on the topic. Law is about concepts and medicine is more about learning specific stuff. So for each discipline your methods are right and effective

Hi Liam, It’s probably too long to leave you a comment about this subject. But there is a very interesting book concerning about that called ‘Make it stick’. A lot of your indications and techiniques find scientific bases in there. Tnx for the video and congrats for your recent grades!

5:46 yes I do remember doing something like that. While I moved on the next chapter, every 15 to 30 mins I went back to the first chapter because the info was more challenging.

Could you explain more on the topic bursts especially where you are having multiple subjects

Excellent video! I love the way you stress that you can't really learn something when you haven't forgotten it in the first place.
I like to compare the brain to a computer. The RAM represents the short-term memory (small & fast) whilst the hard drive and SSD represent the long-term memory (large & slow). You can't store an entire semester of courses in your short-term memory, so you write them to your hard drive. Then, you have to practice to access your hard drive quickly, that is, replacing the information from your conventional hard drive to your super fast SSD.

Thanks so much Lars!! I love this analogy - an amazing way of thinking about it and perhaps one I’ll steal for a future vid 🤣😝🤗🤗

Hey Liam, I've also achieved great results with the "End of the Day Recall" but could not find evidence-based research on the topic. Have you come across where this is mentioned online? :) Nice Video Btw

Hi, thanks for the tips! But I have one question: how would you do the bursts when you do 6 different subjects? Would you recommend doing one subject during the first burst second and third and then do a different subject during a break or do 2 bursts on 2 subjects? sorry if this sound confusing

I just realized that Ali is a doctor and you are a lawyer. I don't know why, but I just find that really cool. I love both of your videos!

(For reference, I study medicine in UK). The reason Ali has a slightly different approach (in terms of doing “random topics”), is because in medicine (both in exams and as a doctor) all content is very integrated and actually is fairly jumbled and mixed up within each individual case; part of the challenge is linking various topics together. From my understanding, law is different in the sense that each topic/area seems to be fairly explicit from another (eg. land law is probably not often crossed over with corporate). But either way, still a great video and I will definitely implement this.
