'Kraj' actually means 'End' in some Slavic languages (like Serbian). Considering Ravnica is inspired a little bit by Slavic mythology and culture, I don't think it was a coincidence.
So we have Experiment One, the first one, and Experiment Kraj, the final one.
I was just about to comment that :D
wow thats pretty cool
wasnt kraj supposed to be some sort of simic based purge, essentially ending ravnica so it can be remodled how momir vig wanted? (hence the "End" part)
It also means "Country" in Polish, but "End" probably makes more sense :)
In Czech it is "Edge"
Hahahaha! As soon as Adam's Birds of Paradise came down, I paused the video and excitedly called to my husband to come see. "Look at that! It's the card alter I was telling you about, the one [Nelson's wife] did!" He looks at it and thinks it's awesome, then the boys go on to say how it's Nelson's card and we realize how cool it is to be sitting here across the country from the people magic and seeing a card I've literally sat down and played with be talked about.
2:10:04 - 2:10:45 “Everybody stop! What is that?” Came back and rewatched this just for the context on this recurring joke that Adam loves.
"Where's Bob?"
"It's been 5 turns since the incident, James. You need to let him go."
Seeing all the damage that Bob did to James kept making me think of that line from an episode of Friday Nights, "If you didn't want us to let Dark Tutelage kill you, you shouldn't have put it in your commander deck!"
2:10:01 "Yo, fuck this weird dog" -Ben Ulmer, 2019
Judith, the Scourge Diva:
"This hoodie is so warm!"
“And it has pockets!”
The First ravnica sets actually do have watermarks, they're just *much* fainter than on later sets.
Also most of the watermarks changed between RAV block and RTR Block. Guilds and Allegiances use the the later marks.
Mike Sherry but they are mechanically the same mark
The Rakdos killing the weird dog bit is one of my favorite LRR MTG moments
Y'all ready for a brawny bodacious beard boi brawl?
You guys are the best. I ordered from CK and they did a great job! Even got a custom token of appreciation
fun fact: there are 107 different nonland cards with the dimir watermark in the game, so Graham could have build an entire "Dimir watermark deck"
Problem wouldve been that you couldnt have affixed the adjective "good" before it
No it would have been Kathleen
You have enough watermark cards for every deck
Master of Cruelties is so fun to play in a ninjas deck. The MoC's damage is prevented, NOT the ninja's. If you can get him through, it's an OHK
ZaberFangAT or with an Alesha deck as she puts him out already attacking
This was fun to watch. I just made a Kraj mutant theme deck not too long ago and seeing Adam pilot a similar deck was fun to watch.
I'm burnt out on how crazy powerful 2022 edh is, so this was really really dope to watch. No unstoppable bombs. No 20 minute solitaire turns. It was never lop-sided all throughout. Just good ol chill fair magic.
"Devoid cards have color identity!?"
Yes! Simply put, color identity is additive. Mana symbols in the cost and rules text + color indicators + color defining abilities (on both sides of the card if applicable).
A Devoid card with a black cost is essentially colorless + black, which gives it the color identity of black.
Correct, but then on the battlefield it’s colorless.
@1:04:30 "Rakdos is the plural, the single is Rakuno" should have been Graham's line... :)
rakdees nuts
Sounds like a pokemon
Paul said it, if you listen, but the others are mic'd higher.
I’d be more than ready to load my Selesnya watermark only EDH deck and run to Canada to play against the fine folks at LRR. I’ve made a few watermark only guild decks and they are surprisingly effective even in your average EDH game. I’d happily watch (or participate) in a watermark only matchup!
Adam is such a Cutie 👀
he painted his fingernails, i love him!!
He's good. But Ben best boy
@@draconetrix3820 Ben painted his fingernails-
My god you guys are pumping out mtg content, I LOVE IT, DO NOT STOP ITS SO GOOD
My 4 swell bois playing some swell edh. This pleases the soul.
James did in fact have an 8 CMC card in his library, Bedeck/Bedazzle.
Is nobody going to point out that James called rolling a 56 on a d100, then rolled a 14 followed by a 42, which adds up to 56?
pretty sweet catch
I'm brand new to commander and y'all have made me fall in love with the format :)
21:06 according to scryfall these are the numbers of nonland cards each guild has with their watermark
azorius - 94
dimir - 112
rakdos - 98
gruul - 96
selesnya - 105
orzhov - 94
golgari - 95
simic - 99
izzet - 90
boros - 93

@@christiangarza8122 exactly
I stand by James! He plays interaction and deals with his opponents boards and threats!
At 2:48:00 the Benthic Biomancer should have triggered for the Loot 1 effect and killed him there! Haha!
Edit: Upon unpausing the video and watching a couple minutes more, I see he realized the trigger. I'm still happy, no one escapes the rules, not nobody, not no how!
"Fuck that weird dog! Stop the show! What IS that? Get it OUT OF HERE," is probably my favorite thing ever said by LRR
Graham's shirt makes me happy
The bearded 4 fight.
This match was forebearded many a moon ago
@@Cryonicity *fourbearded
It's the Three Beardketeers
So for future events: War of the Spark would be legal in this format, correct?
I think
If it’s in the same block as allegiance and guilds of ravica then yeah
It's any set that takes place on ravnica so yes. My friends play standard with ravnica this way but with also the modern core set included. i got to try commander this way
@Ellobats shhh 4 months a go was a different time. Let them live in bliss
Yes, it was a set set in ravnica.
Take a shot every time Ben says some variation of the phrase "That's a yikes from me."
love the idea of putting some restriction to your deck! really fosters creativity!
Me: sees title
Also me: inhales so sharply i can’t breathe
*i guess you took my breath away*
Frilled Mystic: *exists*
Me: Eww! There's a 3/2 stuck to my counterspell, get it off!
Why u no like counter spell that comes with a free blocker? It is even easier to recast.
@@bookworm3696 then someone can act of treason it...
@@crabobserver it's a 3/2 and you are already in blue. An act of treason against it will ultimately be pointless.
@@bookworm3696 im still more comfortable with a counterspel that my enemy's can't steal
@@crabobserver that only matters if they can flicker it. Last I checked, flicker decks tend not to have theft in them. And again, in blue anyways.
Dies to PartyBob (Duskmantle Seer) :3
I love all of these commander games. i only wish my play group was as healthy as yours.
SAME
Commander Damage is a bad rule that kind of needs to exist. Without some type of commander damage, Voltron commanders would basically be phased out all together, and they're already on the weaker side of things. Also life gain strategies would suddenly be far more problematic, because there are some decks that just don't have an infinite combo that instantly wins the game.
I think that some modification to the Commander Damage rule could be made, but with how good of a spot the format is in right now, there is no reason to make any massive changes.
Commander damage shouldn't be changed just like infect shouldn't change
If a Voltron Deck deserves to win in one swing, it should be able to hit for 30-50 damage. If it relies on 21 damage, it’s kind of a weak deck. My Uril deck for example, hits for 20-40 on average powered up swing. With Commander Damage, this is an easy win they can’t do anything against. My play group doesn’t use CMDR damage, which I feel let’s some of my decks do better.
It is kind of a paradox type of thing. In a group that doesn't play with commander damage, Voltron style decks won't be hated on as hard allowing them to build up for bigger swings. However, all Voltron decks across the board would be worse over all without the commander damage rule in play, because their biggest weakness will still be in play. The fact that they keep all their eggs in one basket.
Though the viability of Voltron decks isn't the only issue. There is also the viability of the types of decks they counter. Namely life gain strategy decks. You don't see a lot of dedicated life gain decks around because they're countered fairly easily by both Voltron and Combo, but if built well are all but immortal against other strategies. Without commander damage, you will see an increase in these types of decks, which will lead to an increase in combo decks.
It is just too big of a shake up to risk when the game is in a good spot.
@@regirex4418 Cmdr damage is easy to counter. Just remove the commander from the field. Voltron decks are only really valid if there is cmdr dmg. To remove cmdr damage you can literally make an infinite board lock too easy. Only commanders not capable of cmdr dmg win is the planeswalkers
It is possible to build ten Ravnica themed EDH decks using basic lands and cards with guild watermarks. Before Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Alliegance, the decks weren't too great, but I do have ten built. They're all going to get makeovers after War of the Spark, and I'll continue to stick the "watermark only" restriction. It'll be nice to cut bad commons and uncommons from them, like Frenzied Tilling.
Ben and that Melek deck. That was my first brew.
I've also copied stitch in time 5 times and got lucky
This was super fun to watch!
Yeah, we would riot if anyone picked on serge, Adam is a burly boi he can take care of himself.
Adam's deck: Simic
Me: Hell yeah!
Graham's deck: Dimir
Me: ...Shit...
Me: yeeeesssssss... 🔵⚫️
They sure rate the threatlevel of the simic boardstate way higher than any of the others, despite it not really being that powerful.
I have been waiting for this good bye three hours of my life
As an opinion on the commander rules discussion early on, i vehemently disagree with both james and ben.
First, removing commander damage would take away one of the weapons against the decks that just gain 500+ life and become almost untouchable by normal damage means. It would also completely eradicate voltron as a strategy from the format.
Second, taking away colour identity from devoid cards would be pointless. You wouldnt be able to cast them in a deck outside of their colours because lands have colour identity so you couldnt put them in the deck. There are ways around it, like chromatic lantern, but its inconsistent at best
Lands only have a color identity if they have a colored mana symbol in their rules text or basic land type. There's enough rainbow lands, a deck that wanted to wouldn't have that much trouble casting an off-color devoid.
@@BookofAeons theres quite a few rainbow lands now yes but it would still be a little pointless to make a huge change to the colour identity rules just so people can play devoid cards. It would also open up a non-zero amount of confusion with newer players. 'So i have to stick to cards that have the same colour(s) as my commander?'
'Yes except for this group of a couple dozen eldrazi just because'
'Oh ok so i should put some basic lands in my deck to cast these eldrazi that arent in my commander's colours?"
'No you cant because lands have colour identity'
'???'
@@dancook6114 i mean, when i was a new player i was actually pretty confused about devoid cards not being allowed
My whole group just starts throwing punches right off the bat, it’s great.
Love this format 😀 just hard to convince a group to do only those sets.
Whee you will do this again? another guild? This was so awesome! plz do another 😉
1:35:07 That's not actually a combo, is it? So Niv-Mizzet Dracogenius damages a player, drawing a card and causing Niv-Mizzet Firemind to damage a player - but that doesn't trigger Dracogenius again, as Dracogenius is specifically if Dracogenius damages an enemy. It's a neat synergy, but I can't see how it would go infinite.
It doesn’t. If you could somehow get Dracogenius and Parun/Firemind on the same card, it would go infinite. They’re not an infinite combo together tho
Surely the two niv mizzet's don't combo with each other? Dracogenius relies in specifically doing damage to draw the card so surely they dont trigger each other?
They don't combo, Dracogenius says when he deals damage, draw a card, not when damage is dealt as a whole, so they don't combo.
I was thinking the same thing. The real combo is give Dracogenius a Curiosity effect so he draws whenever he deals damage.
Connor Hamilton, the curiousity combo doesn't work with Dracogenius, but works with Firemind and Parun due to the order of damage and draw.
@@frytheguy8078 You're right, my mistake. Forgot which was which when writing that.
Ben needs to learn the difference between instants and sorcery near 2:39:00
Hey, fellow viewers, if you want some good tunes to keep low and in the background as you watch this; look up Neon Lagoon by Astral Throb on here. Really nice to have in the background, doesn't draw away from them whilst they go back and forth. :D Enjoy the recording fellow LRR Fans! :D
When will Wight of Precinct Six get its own budget horror film? It's so perfectly named for a monster flick
James plays Commander correctly! You can't get mad over people stopping you from doing crazy shit!
I was so confused because I thought this was from last week. Until I realized I watched it live XD
This is the 4th Friday Night Paper Fight vid I have viewed.
I have now seen Ben win 4 games of Commander.
Explain.
I thought James retired Commander Champion, and re-retired Commander Champion.
mhm
At 15:10 Dubious is probably the word Graham was looking for
Forgot to remind TH-cam of my engagement with this wonderful magic... so uh, here I am.
Should be able to I run Decimate to, at least one of the reprints. It literally shows a group of Azorious fleeing from a horde of goblins and the flavor text identifies them as being from the Gruul.
Rakdos: Ma, that weird fukkin dog is back. What is that thing. Blink m'fucker blink.
at 1:07. yes evolve triggers. think of walking ballista and winding constrictor.
1:10:24 Loudest "YEAH!" from Adam to date.
This was fun, playing only with cards from those specific blocks. I do like Melek though. I've got Mizzix as well and I've been thinking about switching them and some other cards to work better with Mizzix, but I think I just want to keep Melek for my meta, which isn't very competitive.
At 2:15:00
I've never seen Adam's eyes as open as when James complained about his Gutterbones dying.
11:50 Don't worry, Paul. At least I laughed at that joke.
Ben shoulda used that syncopate for 0 on rad udea and let it fizzle to get that storm count up instead of ditching it
This just proves that Izzet is the best guild in all of ravnica
Got the Bearded Bois in the house
War of the spark is in ravnica
I have a niv mizzet firemind commander deck with curiosity that is just sick to go off.
The word Graham is looking for at 16:57 is Obfuscatory.
What about Ravnica-themed cards from Magic Origins or Commander sets?
When adam drew off the merfolk I was screaming notion thief.
Graham plays control.. yet has no control. Good deck Graham..
Hey Rakdos, fight this weird dog
Can we have a part 2 of this with the other guilds represented pls hehe
James needs to sacrifice half of his lands and other Non Demon permanents he controls to Rakdos, this action will surely affect the game state.
The Simic signet always reminds me of a bar of soap
The four beards that herald the apocalypse
Ya'll should put your twitch link in the description. I would love to watch live.
Ben's dab-sneeze killed me.
Card kingdom did send me a card I didn’t ask for, however they swiftly sent me a replacement
Would War of the Spark be allowed in a game like this?
Homebrew with your playgroup. I dont see any compelling reason why excluding War of the Spark would fit the theme of Ravnica guilds.
I've been building Nikya under these stipulations. It's going to be bad but fun.
Can someone explain the Niv mizit infinite combo Ben said he has at 1:35:30
Not actually a combo, they don't interact the way he thinks
The Firemind and the Parun have the infinite combo together.
The first 3 ravnica sets did have watermarks, Paul...
biggest problem I have? desecration demon should be getting that trigger every turn. you must go to combat, every turn, so if no one is sacrificing creatures, the demon is getting bigger every turn
Desecration Demon only gets stronger if you *do* sacrifice to tap it. It essentially spends the turn eating the sacrifice instead of attacking.
No offense Ben, but devoid cards having no color identity would be inconsistent with the way color identity works for virtually no gain. Color identity is distinct from color. This can be annoying if you want to put crystal shard in your non-blue deck, but is a boon in that you can play Tasigur as a Sultai commander.
And what devoid card are you wanting to play in a deck that you can't. I can't think of a devoid card that's better than filler, and you'd have to have a bunch of "mana of any color" effects just to make them work.
At least the hybrid thing would affect good cards, and let you put them in decks that can cast them easily.
That said, the color identity rules definitely have some edge cases. Unquenchable fire and naked singularity are the biggest examples.
About devoid having color identity.
You guys realize that all lands are colorless right? And they have color identity.
As for Mana symbols in reminder text, there are several instances of cards that can be played in one color identity but have reminder text to explain rules that use other colors. For example there's an artifact creature somewhere in the game that is colorless that has an effect that has to do with white cards. That's why reminder text doesn't count.
you need the guild sleeves too.
There is also gateway plaza it doesn’t have a colour.
Does anyone know what weird thing Adam said? I assume it was from something that's out by now, but I didn't catch what they were filming earlier that day
Why would devoid cards not have colour identity? Colour identity in commander is literally dictated by the mana symbols on the card. The whole point of the devoid mechanic was to have colourless cards that you couldn't jam into every deck.
I think it is mostly a flavour fail thing, you should be able to run a devoid deck with a colourless eldrazi as your commander but can't because of the current rules on colour identity. Could just have it that commander rules eratas devoid to include colour identity
@@OscatJ I personally don't mind it so much, I actually recently built a Jhoira devoid deck and it would be weird to be running off-colour devoid cards, as the devoid cards are designed to represent the "colour" that they're in. Making that exception would be giving colours access to abilities and cards that those colours don't usually have. Hell, one of the devoid guys counterspells. Although, I do have a Pull from the Blind Eternities and an off-colour "sideboard" lol so if you want to go off-colour you still can.
Best part of the video 2:15:01
Ben is wearing a rakdos shirt while playing izzet. Foul.
Graham is wearing Orzhov and both Adam and James are wearing amino Red... COINCIDENCE
Yeah it actually is possible to do only watermarks. I have a lot of them that do it’s great. But idk about commander I don’t play that much.
How does the card reckognition work? It seens pretty nifty.
I believe that it scans the art of the card with "facial" recognition, which is why shiny or holo cards have a rough time being recognized.
i love adams deck sooo much
Question, at 2:13:09, does the legends rule kick in on ben's Niv-Mizzi's
No, because they have different names. The names have to be exactly the same and both have to be legendary for the rule to do anything.
