The bass with the secondary provided pads "Universe" is ferocious! The primary pads "Auteur" give it incredible space and IMO make it sound totally unique in a good way... For about the next 10 years, whenever he introduced me to someone, he would say ya, we call him Rewind and then would tell the story and embarrass me. Under Siege will always be in my heart.
The ZMG suede pads make a HUGE difference. I felt the same way about the Aeolus, I was ready to sell them, and then I changed the pads and they’re now my favorite headphones.
2:10 I mean, I use a full XLR mic setup for gaming. I put a mod mic on my console setup upstairs but down here on my PC, we throw money out the window. Quality is #1 priority!!!

@@joesavini we're going to have hybrid pads for the whole line at some point as we invested in a lot of the ZMF suede we use. But generally if you find a pad you like for our headphones stick with it. Everyone will have a different one they may prefer bc anatomy etc.

I was honestly ready to sell them with the stock pads and as soon as I tried them with Eikon it sounded like a MUCH MUCH different headphone. Like mind blowing imaging, etc. Absolutely fantastic.
@@joesavini Yeah - it's all about optimizing the "room size" for your ears, I think the ear volume changes between people have a lot to do with why we hear about people experiencing the same headphones differently a lot (among other factors.) So different earpads are a good solution! It's good to know the Eikon works well for many, I will list it on our pads page on the site as a recommended pad for the V Closed.
Leaders aA The default pad for the VC should be the ZMF Auteur leather pad (Universal leather are detached in the case). Zeos preferred the Eikon Suede pads it seems.

For anyone still watching this, and who have heard the Aeolus and Vérité Closed, is this basically an elevated Aeolus? A non forgiving of bad recordings version of the Aeolus with better resolution? Z said the Aeolus are in your face type of cans, and then mentioned that the VC are intense and close. I'm thinking maybe owning two to three distinct pairs of headphones is the way to go. Wouldn't want to buy two that are too similar in sound. Maybe the better option would be to own both a VC and the Auteur as they seem to sound more distinct from each other than the VC and Aeolus do.

Wonder how these will compare to the new Audio-Technica closed back headphones - the ATH-AWAS and the... other more expensive one. Same headband and removable cables as the ADX5000, but closed and wood. I am medium hyped.
In my opinion nothing is close to what adx5000 can do, clarity and details are off the roof, beautiful timbre out of tubes. I own 3 masters of timbre VC, 6XX and ADX5000, every one of those represent different style (bass and huge respect for beeing closed not loosing much qualities of open backs goes to VC, vocals and midcentric nature goes to 6XX, resolution with clarity and overall balanced sound goes to ADX5000). Even if I love my adx5000 I would not change them for closed AT, VC is exceptional masterpiece.
My Verite closed Ltd in zebrawood are on their way, can’t wait, heard the verite closed in monkeypod wood and loved them, I wonder how the different woods make them sound. Did you try the verite with the Rebel Amp?
I'd disagree. I heard the regular Verite Closed for over 6 hours and it just kept giving me details and new elements that I had never heard before. Also the timbre is so organic. It gives you something that no other closed headphone does and thus you cannot just put a value to that.
At this level, these aren't for people looking for bang-for-buck headphones. This is people looking for the best, and currently the best isn't cheap to produce, but hopefully as the years go on we will be able to purchase headphones of this level (at least in terms of sound quality) for just a few hundred dollars or less.
That is totally subjective first of all, but that is beside the point. What you are getting after about 2 months when you order these are hand crafted, artizan heirlooms, designed to perfection in excrutiating detail and thousands of hours of trial and error to look, feel and sound to the best of Zach Merbachs ability. The reason he uses wood exclusively is because he knows the sonic properties of wood intimately since he used to design and build guitars as a kid before studying film and modifing and building headphones. His cans are very, very special, and if anything severely underpriced for what they are. These are better and more well rounded than most of the 3k plus headpones on a technical level alone, not even mentioning that you get a hand made u one of a kind artpiece with every one you buy.
For the people talking about the price you need to remember that money is relative. We don't all make the same. We all have different needs and wants. Some of the people buying these headphones pay more in taxes in one year than you gross for the year.

headphones lack the basic specs that speakers provide, like driver size, excursion and cone area. how can you know how much bass its capable of if you don't know much air it can disciple? basically i want something that can produce more subbass than my sony mdr7, 70mm driver that can move quite a low millimeters, just look up "curtain shaker" song. i have a feeling that most headphones can produce the low notes on this song and my mdr7 does quite a good job at it.

I bought the ps500e as my first audiophile set ever, and it made me very happy until I discovered the other stuff. I have some sennheiser hd650, hifiman he400i and blue satellite. I don't use the grado since. Even my $160 he400i are far superior in sound and built quality.
It's funny cause I think this headphone is the best ZMF headphone I ever tried. But I like other closed back headphones more. Anyway I believe if someone is looking for a headphone at that price range, get the HEDDphone instead.
@@arrakian for my personal taste cause I love soundstage imaging and tight bass instruments separation, I would say ultrasone edition 8 or signature pro. And focal Stellia for speed and detail. And believe it or not but if you know how to eq get the dt48 it's one of the best headphones period regardless of design, speed clarity everything, maybe not as wide as ultrasone but very very impressive.
@@arrakian it depends on the model. The lower end models do seem to have that problem. Signature dxp or dj, do seem to suffer from this problem, due to driver speed in my opinion. But the signature pro and edition 8 are very pleasant and very clear, it's closer to an hd650 in tonality, but way better in technicalities, speed transients, soundstage, details, etc. I can forgive a professional headphone to sound ruthless and revealing of mistakes, like the Adam audio sp5 it's incredibly revealing and analytical, also amp and source dependant, which is my cup of tea, cause I like revealing signature it's close to a t1 gen2 or an hd800. The signature pro and edition 8 are chill but super detailed too, in a pleasant way they display details in a pleasant manner. You can hear mistakes but they won't punish or bother you closer to a hifiman arya or focal clear.

Its a "improved" alpha with bass sliders similar to those on the takstar pro 82 + the usb 7,1 dongle and better earpads. im curious to hear your thoughts about those since they also have nicer treble compared to the previous alphas but they do cost a bit more
Lmao, Zeos, I think you might have hearing damage/might be listening too loud. The Suedes round out all notes that come through/ make the sound stage tiny...
Porn cables doesn't need to be expensive. Just got 3 cables in Tin T3 quality but different color. Brands are KBear and Yinyoo. 25 to 30 € per cable. Tin T3 cable ( the gold silver) for 10€ but can't remember the brand tho. Getting this kind of cable in Germany almost impossible. A few on Amazon but also from China so better look out at aliexpress in the first place. Very impressive what Chinese audio company's are delivering in the last few years.

In this case I believe he tested a 300 ohm headphone with a solid state amp if I remember correctly as I wrote this over 3 months ago. He also runs sound via optical instead of usb and that's plain dumb. Then there's the fact that zmf headphones are meant to compete with the focal utopias and audeze lcd-4s both of which are demanding to power right. These are no exception and he fucked up by powering them wrong and messing with the pads.
@@gravity_assisted The pair Zeos reviewed was an older pair most likely pre 2016. Audeze change the diaphragm in the LCD-XC drivers back in 2016. Zeos was also dumb enough to test them with Aune x7s which is class a amp designed for high impedance headphones not 20 Ohm headphones.

TH-900Mk2 looks better in design & durability, comes with headphone stand. To get to the same cost as this headphone, you can get a balanced cable and a DAC/Amp and still have spare changes for a pizza.

I've been reading several forums and when I think I have finally found my choice, people always say stuff like "but you can buy x brand and model and they are better" I will mainly listen to hi fi music and play some video games. The games that I play are not fps nor competitive, mostly single player games like Hellblade, Tomb Rider, Puzzle games... I have the Fidelios xhr2 and the Sennheiser hd 598 as the best possible choices. About amp, I have no ideas, I got confused when I did my research. Thanks a lot.

Auteur Hybrid pads are the best I've heard so far. You lose a bit of isolation, but everything is extended and sounds better than the stock pads.
I'm LOVING them with the Eikon pads. I just got my pair back from Zeos (the pair in the video). Probably the best cans I own at this point.

basically i want something that can produce more subbass than my sony mdr7, 70mm driver that can move quite a low millimeters, just look up "curtain shaker" song. i have a feeling that most headphones can produce the low notes on this song and my mdr7 does quite a good job at it.

I'm looking to replace my earpads on my Grado PS1000e. Would anyone have any advice? I feel the stock pads have a tendency to slump down.
You have to buy new ones, the material is very shitty and after slumping down they disintegrate into black dust.
Stick with the same pads, Bend the headband to make it more like a frankinstein shape. Will hold better
@@iluvj00 So you have also experienced the black dust? I'm pretty disappointed after all these years with my purchase of these headphones. You should see my headphones now. I have sewn this fancy grey cloth around the pads to stop the dust for now.

It really hit home with me since you illustrated everything I was feeling about my PS 1000's for some time now. @@consumerelitist6508 yeah, I bought 2 pairs from Amazon, same material, it seems nobody is doing something different for Grado. I am currently trying to sell mine. I bought the ps500e as my first audiophile set ever, and it made me very happy until I discovered the other stuff. I have some sennheiser hd650, hifiman he400i and blue satellite. I don't use the grado since. Even my $160 he400i are far superior in sound and built quality.
Heck, I was scared the first time I changed pads on my Ether 2, the suede pads make it sound like another headphone
It's funny cause I think this headphone is the best ZMF headphone I ever tried.
But I like other closed back headphones more.
Anyway I believe if someone is looking for a headphone at that price range, get the HEDDphone instead.

@@arrakian for my personal taste cause I love soundstage imaging and tight bass instruments separation, I would say ultrasone edition 8 or signature pro.
And focal Stellia for speed and detail.
And believe it or not but if you know how to eq get the dt48 it's one of the best headphones period regardless of design, speed clarity everything, maybe not as wide as ultrasone but very very impressive.

The lower end models do seem to have that problem.
Signature dxp or dj, do seem to suffer from this problem, due to driver speed in my opinion.
But the signature pro and edition 8 are very pleasant and very clear, it's closer to an hd650 in tonality, but way better in technicalities, speed transients, soundstage, details, etc.
I can forgive a professional headphone to sound ruthless and revealing of mistakes, like the Adam audio sp5 it's incredibly revealing and analytical, also amp and source dependant, which is my cup of tea, cause I like revealing signature it's close to a t1 gen2 or an hd800.
The signature pro and edition 8 are chill but super detailed too, in a pleasant way they display details in a pleasant manner.
You can hear mistakes but they won't punish or bother you closer to a hifiman arya or focal clear.
tastes are different I would never trade them for HEDD

Porn cables doesn't need to be expensive. Just got 3 cables in Tin T3 quality but different color. Brands are KBear and Yinyoo. 25 to 30 € per cable. Tin T3 cable ( the gold silver) for 10€ but can't remember the brand tho. Getting this kind of cable in Germany almost impossible. A few on Amazon but also from China so better look out at aliexpress in the first place. Very impressive what Chinese audio company's are delivering in the last few years.

In this case I believe he tested a 300 ohm headphone with a solid state amp if I remember correctly as I wrote this over 3 months ago. He also runs sound via optical instead of usb and that's plain dumb. Then there's the fact that zmf headphones are meant to compete with the focal utopias and audeze lcd-4s both of which are demanding to power right. These are no exception and he fucked up by powering them wrong and messing with the pads.

@@gravity_assisted The pair Zeos reviewed was an older pair most likely pre 2016. Audeze change the diaphragm in the LCD-XC drivers back in 2016. Zeos was also dumb enough to test them with Aune x7s which is class a amp designed for high impedance headphones not 20 Ohm headphones.

After using the Stellia's and hearing several ZMF Headphones that to me were very overrated I doubt these are in the Stellia's class
Eikons on amp and sounds tube amplifier are my favorite headphone set up. I own hd800S/HD700/HD650 and a bunch of ther headphones.
If these had the stock pads on them I would agree with your statement. But one little pad swap changes everything.

Hard to say the performance justifies the price. If you have a headphone setup you love to perfect and this is the best for you then yea match it to its perfect amp, get a nice r2r dac for the best dac and get yourself a premium cable... But even then... When the cable cost more than the headphones... Or you see your monthly or weekly salary on the price of a cable.... Fuck that shit...
TH-900Mk2 looks better in design & durability, comes with headphone stand. To get to the same cost as this headphone, you can get a balanced cable and a DAC/Amp and still have spare changes for a pizza.
The ZMF Verite Closed are more durable the the Fostex TH900 mk2
