What I love about Cobalt - that jack is also a proper pre out if you use jack to dual RCA. It makes it a decent DAC. Not every USB dongle does this

I'm pretty sure the only difference between red black and cobalt is power output, and the nominal choice to choose lesser chips up to the cobalt with arbitrary marginal upcharges for profit and none gets your more features. It's only selling point is MQA and even then MQA is not good.

@Vittoria and for replying to an 8 months old comment you win: the audioquest USB sticks are overpriced garbage in 2022 and no one should buy one with all the options we have available for competing price ranges across all varieties which may or may not also include Bluetooth 5.1 and/or batteries to save ones mobile device.

Me too: Z review of the Onyx. Personally, I wanted to A/B compare the THX Onyx with others in the category. But. Here in Sydney there was no store that stocked both. Based on the rave reviews from: Z/Josh/dms/whatever the name of The Headphone Show guy is - on the massdrop THX Amp(s). I took a punt - remember the mantra in Risky Business? - and bought the THX Onyx sight unseen. (And this was before the mqa thread blow up).
Anyway the Onyx Does exactly what I wanted it to.
More "oomph" - like WAY more - for my LCD-X's - driven off a 2013 Mac Pro.

@@En_Joshi-Godrez The Dragonfly red sounds better than the Quedlix 5k too (same DAC). Wired pushes it closer but nothing can beat LDAC for portability outside as USB C is crud for holding data signal in the pocket. Constantly falling out.
Oh and my red has a dodgy 3.5mm socket they wanted nothing to do with to fix. I dropped it ONCE and it only works now when I hold the 3.5mm socket to the side... so yeah there's that
Not to mention the Android phones with the dragonfly DACs do not play ball. They send the full upscaled version to the Dragonfly so gives it no choice but to play what it is given, which is hissy with Spotify say.

As a Cobalt owner, I have to say I'm perfectly happy with it, and I don't actually want an extra volume control on it personally since I've found it's easier to use it across multiple devices since each device will remember the appropriate volume level for it and then I don't have to mess with the volume every time I switch devices. Also, the reason the color indicator on it was "wrong" is because Android always resamples audio, no matter what the original source format is unless you specifically bypass the built-in audio stack.

Really don't understand this shit about "more features" over just having better sound quality. Why buy a dac if the sound improvement is not pretty much 100% of your concern. Plenty of $20 converters that will input single by optical or usb, or just use your laptop. This idea that equipment that is designed to improve reproduction of music should be given a weighted score even close to what "features" it has is laughable. I heard this thing somewhat recently, and it honestly makes all the Chines dac/amps ive heard around this price point sound so artificial and clinical. Whether that is worth $300 for one connectivity is your choice, but I am happy that there are dac amps in this price point that dont sound as dull and flat like the d50 or su-9.

Audio products with fewer buttons, screens and wireless doohickeys secretly appeal to me more. There are 3 reasons I can think of for this. 1) Makes me question if this is a product aimed at the mass market rather than audio quality being a priority at all. 2) Money spent on the "features" could have been spent improving the audio quality instead. 3) Could the extras actually be sources of electrical interference and be reducing the sound quality compared to the identical device without them? First thing I do with a new audio toy is to switch off every wireless feature I can find and connect using cables only. Cobalt is worth the price. I hate to admit it. It might be maybe $50 over priced. I wish they would come out with a DRAGONFLY AMETHYST with a balanced option with more power. It drove most headphones in my collection just fine. The sound? Incredible! Sound stage and clarity is just phenomenal. The tonality is just right and not too sharp....just neutral. I also have the iDSD BL which is a very powerful transportable DAC/AMP and guess what? With COBALT I rarely bothered to use it. It was that good. When a company innovates sound that good in such a small package, they DESERVE the money. Blew my mind. I could never get over how such a small package could sound THAT good. My iDSD BL felt like a tank next to it and frankly, COBALT, could replace a mid-tier desktop unit-- no problem, if power isn't an issue. Oh and my iDSD BL had an iGalvanic and iPurifier3 connected to it. There's the clue right there.
The problem with COBALT is the build quality which is not robust. They used sheet metal with COBALT rather than cast aluminum for the exterior like with the RED. My COBALT started cutting in-and-out after 10 months of heavy use because the USB connector became loose. Fortunately it was under warranty. Audioquest stood behind their product and replaced it but I sold it off when I got the new one from the factory. The cost was too high to risk another failure. Other than that BRAVO Audioquest COBALT. Far better then your Dragonfly Red.

High notes like Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain were really clipped or distorted in 16-bit but as good as audiophile vinyl in 24-bit. The real shocker was that using my mac's built in DAC yielded acceptable quality on 16-bit, and not really much worse with the 24-bit than the Cobalt.

I kind of hate tiny devices that seem rather flimsy or delicate, that's my other reservation with this. I still lug around my Fiio Mont Blanc amp because it sounds great, but it's also metal
and built like a tank. It is extra weight and bulk, but it performs and is difficult to beat on, and it didn't cost $300. On the other hand I was sitting at a diner for two hours
yesterday using my new Pioneer CUEBT red DJ headphones via my iPhone, and they sounded fine but, they did lack the warmth and power that the Fiio amp or a good extra DAC
would have provided. There is that volume and power limit via the basic phone, which is irritating. For that scenario I would love one of these, but the small and delicate
profile is a boon or a curse, or both, not sure yet. The cap is easily lost, of course.

The problem with the Cobalt is that it’s overpriced. It’s competent for what it is, but it’s still basically the AQ Red with a different paint job and slightly different form factor. The two measure virtually identically despite the different internals. Spec wise the E1DA smokes this at almost a third the price, more linear and way more powerful. The E1DA also has a balanced version. In practice, the power difference isn’t that much, both Cobalt/Red and the E1DA drive headphones well (for what they are - a good portable amp like the Xduoo Plus will destroy these without breaking a sweat). The E1DA drive slightly louder but not the 3x the specs indicate. The implementation is more refined in the Cobalt/Red, sleeker presentation, but only marginally for all the reasons Z said (no volume, minimal interface, no app, etc.). Yes, $200 is at the edge of how much this should cost.

@@Lauren080508 The E1DA’s cost twice that. You can’t expect AQ with its higher overhead to charge half for something that maybe performs only slightly less than the E1DAs. They’d go out of business. How many legit comparable products are out there currently that cost $50? Low cost, lowfi dongles that sound shit and can’t drive even iems don’t count. Reasonable profit is a thing if we want to continue to have nice things available in the market. It’s just AQ is notorious for being over the top greedy in its pricing, which needs to be called out.

Tired both this, the red and the BTR5, as well as a few desk top chines dacs from topping and smsl. Found both dragonflys sounded significantly better than the btr5. If I had to describe it, the btr5 sound off, like it was somewhat artificial and clinical sounding which made the music sound far more dull and less dynamic. The two dragonflys brought some of that dynamics back, while the colbolt in particular noticeably increased the sound scape, while the btr5 kinda closed it in. Its like looking at things through high school chemistry glasses your whole life, then taking them off. If you never took them off, then you would have no idea what you were missing. As a dac, it sounded better than any other chines dac around the same price point. They should make a Bluetooth version though, the form factor really is quite bad for OTG.
