I cannot think of any single one of Peter’s videos they I’ve ever clicked off. They are my favorite little pick-me-up. For example, I’m currently on a grounded plane and watching this with a smile.
It's a decent pizza cutter you are the only wood worker I watch on TH-cam because you don't just put music over what your doing and you let us see the mistakes and when it goes wrong
Just got my lathe and it's remarkable how much you need to know just to ask an intelligent question! Wanted to let you know that this video is the first I've seen that shows what mandrels actually do! Thank you so much!!
Hot tip: when gluing a highly angled insert like that, cut the angle in your square stock so that you can properly clamp it in from all around, *then* turn it as normal.
Lovely piece of walnut and a nice result. I do a lot of pizza cutters and ice cream scoops with diagonal stripes like this and I've found it much easier to cut and glue it while it's still square. I clamp it into form so that I can apply more pressure to the ends than you could get doing it this way... I can go find a picture of what it looks like if you're interested.
Lmao my butcher sells walnut in chunks big enough to turn pets out of. Also interestingly, the butcher has them for smoking meat with, but he says walnut is worthless for smoking? He must stock it for those who really insist on it
When you joked about making a strange handle @ 4:15, I’ve seen a lot of pizza cutters that look like that in professional pizza restaurants. you hold it (what would be considered) “a reverse grip” in your hand instead of the traditional way of holding it. So instead of the cutting wheel being in front of your thumb and forefinger it’s below your pinky and the side of your palm, that way you get better force going straight down instead of forwards and out. Plus it keeps your hand further away from a freshly cooked pizza
While I totally understand not wanting to show failures and such, I think it'd be really interesting to see stuff even if it doesn't work out. Failures happen and I think showing that is important, too. Maybe not as it's own video, but maybe as a collection at the end of a quarter or year or something. Regardless, thanks for the hours of entertainment! It's always a treat when I see one of your videos in my subscription feed!
Very nice handle. Didn’t know black locust reacts like that under a black light. I did a similar look for a tap handle before. I found the glue up a lot easier by keeping it square while glueing up. I could use some mdf with packing tape on each side to keep everything aligned, just had to cut the insert piece to rough shape before putting it in.
Good to see you in the new year, Peter. Haven't missed Shop Time in years. Looking forward to another great year of experiments (and the occasional woodworking video).
Watching the skew made me realize over is the biggest mistakes I've been making in my own turning. I'm approaching it with the perspective of a metalworker, and keeping my tools roughly on the centerline of the lathe, resulting in a rather perpendicular angle with the work. Because of that, I've been having a lot of chatter and catching with my tools, especially when I bring out the skew. Next time I turn, I'm going to readjust my tool rest to what you're doing, and see if that helps.
Great project. I saw comments earlier on another site, about resin not appreciating being begged to dry. I always enjoy your videos because they are very entertaining.
If you drill a hole some of the way through before you chop your extreme angle, you can glue one side to the inlay, drill the center hole in the inlay and use a dowel or rod to line it all up for final gluing and added strength.
My parents have half a dozen black locust trees in their yard. Very neat to see that they actually do serve a purpose after all.
Make a hot box. Plywood box with an incandescent light bulb inside. It's like an easybake oven. We used to use one both to cure finished resin and to keep epoxy (unmixed A and B) workable in colder temps (I worked for a Marine company that did fiberglass work way back when).

Two interesting ideas : putting the lava resin in pressure pot, or stabilizing cork with dye to have it be colored in chunks. Opinions?
I don't think he'd be able to do much with the lava resin in the pressure pot. It starts curing way too fast.
