That green is definitely the yellow parts of the string that were light enough that the black didn't completely overwhelm it. I bet if you used a powdered black pigment, more of the original colors would be preserved, and you could get the effect you wanted. Love your channel. Stay Safe!
I have a test in my hand with a different material that looks amazing soaked in black resin. If I get around to filming the idea, you might be super surprised...
I've been indoors too long. I laughed for like a solid couple of minutes at 400th day of April title. I'm just wondering, if you sealed the string with clear resin first, without it being a solid lump (& defeating the object of the black resin) maybe a into a "birds nest", or drying it flat, or something!!!, then did it into the black resin, would THAT have kept the original colours? (sorry, I took the scenic route!) It turned out beautiful btw :-)
Honeycomb is an AWESOME idea! The angle is an interesting dilemma too. To show off the little cubbies is one option, or do it on an angle so it slices into the honeycomb... this has cool possibilities!
I think when he goes to work with it the softness of honeycomb and the hardness of resin would cause it to bite and explode... But completely encapsulated would look really cool!
"On the 400th day of April..." great opening line for a post-apocalyptic novel. I was expecting muted results but not the complete loss of colour. Interesting.
I’d like to see you try this again with a different dye, something not as dark to see if you could get more colors to pop. I’m thinking something opaque instead of solid. Glad to see you in the shop. The wife and I really like Mrs. Brown’s second opinion on a lot of the recent videos too. Keep up the awesome work.
Hey Peter! This is an odd post I've thought about posting multiple times but never came around to doing so. I'm a 19-year-old girl with a handful of mental issues and I just wanted to let you know that your posts bring me so much peace and calm me down every time I become anxious. I've been following your account for about three years now and I've loved every second of it :) I hope quarantine has treated you and your family well!!
@@shiliela_rhymes_with_delilah its not a MASH reference. in a previous video, his wife nicknamed him Hot Lips, due to a shade name on some dye. so now we all call him Hot Lips lol
@@nevastarn6394 Sorry, I must have missed that one. I've been watching a lot of MASH lately and between the Hot Lips reference and mentioning Leviticus, it made me think of the show.
400th day of April? Sounds like the saying “I spent a week driving through Texas yesterday “ which if you’ve ever driven across Texas you will know what I’m talking about. 😊
I think it'd be awesome to see what you could do with some of culture hustle's pigments! Especially their blacks if possible, but even just the powders would be cool!
I think the bright green string is what once was that neon yellow. Yellow and black mix a kind of desaturated green and the yellow really seems like the only color that would still be that vibrant. Especially since all the others are now so dark. Overall in the end this looks so cool! ♡.♡ But i also have ro agree with earlier comments, that seeing this in clear resin would really interesting! Or even white. Thanks for making these entertaining videos! ♡
black and yellow make green!!! that yellow was so bright that the black couldn't mute it out and instead went with the color wheel and turned it green. Either way it still looks super neat, I say redo it with a clear resin with some pearlescent pigment! I bet you'd get all your colors and then some then. 😊
watching this video a month after the fact, I think a need project would be to save the waste trimmings from projects you use the lathe to make, and use those trimmings in combination with resin to make a new billet to make a knife handle out of. Also, I'd like to thank you sir. You have gotten me interested in resin and lathes enough for my dad to consider making a lathe for me. Thanks!!
It would be interesting to see the string stablized then cast in the dark resin, might help it keep its color! Edit: The bluish greenish string bits almost look like little things under a microscope, kinda cool!
I wish I hadn't watched all your videos now. I find you so relaxing to watch. It really helps during the tough days. Nice to see you experimenting too!
What's the point of a color changing string if you throw it like that? You'd get the same effect cutting different colored string and using that. A more effective use would be to create a repeating pattern, that way you'd be able to see the many changes of color.
As soon as you put multiple drops of the black dye I knew this would be the end result. Black is such a powerful color. You should make another with either fewer drops of black or none at all. I love watching your videos btw!
I like this piece! The greens with the black resin reminds me of abalone. I think that if you were to use clear resin for the string, and then add a layer of black resin on the backside of the pendant (or just paint it black) once it's finished, you'd be able to get that pop you were looking. I think this string would also make for a really cool top.
Peter, love your content. I was day dreaming today and wondered what alot(50) of multicolored thin layers would look like and turn them into 3 juggle balls. A new skill to learn during this down time.
Peter, I love your homemade resin dye videos and I would love it if you did a similar video about wood finishes - not how to make your own, but to compare all the different kinds of finishes. I've been searching online to figure out what the best finish is for a project but the info is vast. There's stains and varnishes and oils and polyurethane and wax and lacquer and each kind has different varieties... I'd love a breakdown of your favorites and how they behave differently on wood.
I think this looks cool even if the vivid colors were lost. I did dig the blacklight reveal on IG. Very cool results! Love to see you experimenting just for fun. Thanks for sharing!
So while watching this it made me think of the string art people do where you soak the string in paint, lay it down then pull it. Just starting my first "big" resin project. A lovely cutting board/decoration with cracks and knots filled with colored resin. Having no thickness planer is making sanding a .... pain. Wish me luck lol
I bet if you first soaked the string in clear resin, then dropped them into the black, they would already be saturated and would not absorb any of the black. It’d probably look like a bowling alley carpet (in a fun way)
I don't know what it is, but there is something aesthetically pleasing about watching ribbons of that resin fly off when you're trimming it on the lathe.

Black absorbs light. Your eyes need light to see color. Maybe try a clear resin for the string and then after it cures add a layer of black resin, so light can get though to make the colors more visible while the black opaque background adds interest to the piece.
I always look forward to your videos. =)Maybe try a second one with a pearlescent, translucent, white? I think that may show more of the really pretty twine colors.
