    When I lived in Australia twenty years ago, I brought with me what was considered the best sunscreen on the Canadian market at the time. We burned. Then I discovered the Australian Cancer Council store, where they sell their own brand of sunscreen. They sold them in huge containers and at a very fair price. That sunscreen never failed us.

    Thank you for this. I'm almost 70. My father died of melanoma when he was only 39 years old. Needless to say, I am a fanatic about sun protection and annual check ups. Our eldest daughter and grandchildren live in Australia. They take sun protection to an entirely different level. "No hat, no play" is a sign you'll see in schools and day care. Sunscreen in pumps is sometimes on the tables of outdoor restaurants near the salt and pepper. Our grandkids are under the age of 10, but they know putting on sunscreen goes with the toothbrushing and hair comb every morning. Sunscreen is in their backpacks and has to be reapplied at recess. We visit Oz every year and I stock up on a variety of sunscreens (I've used everyone you've mentioned) for my return to the US. My favorite face one is from Mecca (the Aussie Sephora).

    As an Australian, I'm very happy with the range of sunscreens sold here. Majority of everything you buy is SPF 50+. I have used neutrogena for years as it keeps my face matte. Its a mattyfying sunscreen for your face.
    But over my body, i just use the local supermarket brand as it is a bit oilier.

    Wear your sunscreen. I have been applying every morning since 1986. No skin cancer, yet. I have fewer wrinkles than my friends. Oh, and all of those 37 years have been lived in Arizona and Texas. I was a one time a day applicant unless it was a day spent outside. Then, I was slavish about reapplying. My friends teased me about being pasty in the 80s and 90s, but I hated the idea of getting a sun burn.

    • @eiregirl317
      @eiregirl317 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I only started wearing it regularly in like 2014/2015 (I'll be 40 next year) and often get mistaken for someone at least 10 if not more yrs younger. Most of my friends also do too, but despite my best efforts, they REFUSE to wear sunscreen regularly. I've TRIED to tell them that if you can see the sun, the sun can see you. Also, skin cancer doesn't care if you're outside for 5 min a day or 5 hrs, so wear the damn sunscreen. And they STILL refuse. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    So glad you mentioned Australia sunscreens, we have probably the Best Facilities in The World when it comes to making sunscreens, it’s big business here and years ago they would advertise it on our tv commercials with the slogan of “Slip, Slap, Slop” being Slip on sun protection clothes, Slap on a Hat 👒 and Slop on That Sunscreen, just about all our sunscreens are 50+++, you really can’t go wrong with any of the sunscreen products that are made in Australia 🇦🇺, I’m currently using a sunscreen that’s from a store here in Australia 🇦🇺 called Mecca and it’s their own brand of face and body sunscreen, plays well under my makeup, doesn’t sting my eyes and I’ve never been burnt from the Sun when wearing it and I spend a lot of time outdoors. I do have to say, I have MUCH darker skin than Tiff(?), live in Australia and use the Naked Sundays Mineral Sunscreen SPF50 and have been using it since it launched. It IS thick (probably wouldn’t be great for oily/combination skin) but it is NOT tinted. That’s just the colour of the sunscreen and while it does give you a white cast initially, it goes away after about 3-5 mins! And yes, I use a teaspoon of sunscreen on my face everyday! So if you are normal/dry, sensitive and are prone to pigmentation/melasma, it’s a REALLY lovely sunscreen. They also have a chemical sunscreen that’s lovely too!

    I live by EVY Kids for my 65 years young, sensitive, dry, NYC face - year round. It’s from Sweden. Fragrance free. No breakouts, doesn’t irritate my super sensitive eyes. I even use it on my lips. It keeps me white as a ghost. It ain’t cheap, nor is shipping from Europe, but I will never give it up (strangely, the other versions don’t agree with me, though I know people that love the Face version. The less ingredients, the better for me).
    The manufacturer uses one distributor to the U.S. packaging and service is superb. It’s always fresh. I have found nothing else that comes close and I can’t tell you how many I have tried both in the States and abroad.
    I was skeptical about using a foam sunscreen but it works so well on so many levels. I do have to use an oil cleanser to remove it. I follow it up with Vanicream Cleanser and Vanicream Cream, which I use on my face and body.
    Very interested in brands you mention. Did you say which ones are best for dry, super sensitive skin?

    I use the Eucerin Pigment Control Sun Fluid 50+ (hello from Europe) and I love it because it makes for a very nice matte primer. When I don't use it my make up ends up very shinny by the middle of the day, but when I use this SPF it remains perfect the whole day. This was an unexpected finding, since what I wanted was to fade my sun spots around my forehead and cheekbones, and it makes me want to use this sun protection daily. So for me it has 3 functions: sun protection / make up primer / fades sun spots remarkably well.

    Thank you, Dr. Idriss, for your wonderful recommendations. I've completely changed my routine thanks to your informative videos, and I couldn't be happier. The information about sunscreens is fantastic. One piece of advice for others: the processing by Stylevana is incredibly slow; it's been over two weeks, and they still haven't fulfilled my order. Just plan ahead when ordering, as it seems to take over a month to have the item in your hands.

    So happy to see that you covered Australia, I'm in New Zealand. I use the Bondi sands, ultra violette and Naked Sundays and an avid believer of wesring sunscreen whether it's rain or shine - never forgetting. I used to have acne growing up and a lot of other skin concerns so I'm verrrryyy picky about skincare products, even makeup that I use as 1 wrong thing and my skin still breakouts. Your channel has helped me out in my ongoing hunt of best things out there for my skin-type. Thank you 💙

    Please keep talking about sunscreens! I’m an acupuncturist and a handful of my peers and patients are afraid to wear sunscreen because they think chemical sunscreen causes cancer, but mineral ones often don’t wear well. Another concern is knowing which sunscreen ingredients are reef safe. Those are where people balk when it comes to sunscreen and I’d love to have easy info to send their way.

    I have lived in East Asia for the first part of my life. It was always Japanese beauty product the best ones (Kbeauty was not as popular back then). I have never known sunscreen could sting until I moved to Europe lol😂😂😂😂 I honestly don't understand why people here get skin cancer easily but the sunscreens, despite the high prices, are still mediaeval. Thank you for the video. I hope people can get good quality sunscreens with a lower price.

    Great content as always! Would love to hear more about the European options, especially the French brands. I've been using Darphin Soleil Plaisir Sun Protective Cream for Face SPF 50 for the past few months now, and I'm loving it! It's been the only sunscreen that has not irritated me or caused bumps/sensitivities, which is surprising considering the formula is not fragrance-free or oil-free.

    Thank you for giving our amazing Aussie sunscreens some airtime! There's no wonder our sunscreens are prioritised so highly, as Australia is unfortunately a world leader in our rates of melanoma.
    I have used three of the four you mentioned (haven't tried the Naked Sundays one). I'm currently using the Cancer Council face and body one shown and it's so easy to use, definitely amongst the least fussy sunscreens I've ever tried (as in no oily/tactile feeling leftover, easily spreads and sinks in, minimal scent, lightweight). When I tried the Queen Screen I hated it because it pilled every single time on me, but so did many other products I was using at the time including makeup, and after many months I figured out the culprit was my Pyungyang Yul Essence Toner making everything on top pill up. One day I'll have to give the Queen Screen another try. The Bondi Sands one is gorgeous and glowy but definitely on the oilier side, as a warning to oily-skinned people, and I found it was slightly more prone to slippage and irritating my eyes.

    Yesterday was a very cloudy, rainy day here in Brisbane, Australia. We didn’t see the sun whole day. Guess what was the UV index at 10am in the morning? SIX! 😅 That’s Australia in a nutshell!
    I am really glad how affordable and good our Aussie sunscreens are. The affordability comes from the fact that sunscreen industry is subsidized due to the high uv index issue here in Down Under. After getting hooked by Aussie sunscreens, never gonna use anything else! 🇦🇺
    Btw, Dr Idriss, you missed a good brand, sophisticated lightweight sunscreen under makeup. Mecca. They have some really good sunscreen options great for under makeup and humid weather. Ideal for Queensland summer - where I live.

Finally some trustworthy source who spoke about the sunscreen I daily use - Bondi Sands SPF 50; I'm very glad that you did not slander about this ;) I rigorously use sunscreen daily and I'm tight-ish on a budget, so the Bondi Sands one is a no brainer, contains 75ml and I can get it for under 10€
    I occasionally try some other sunscreens but if I can save me some money without using something that is bad for my skin, I'm all for it ;)

    I can vouch for Naked Sundays 100% mineral sunscreen. It’s the only mineral sunscreen that I use and I’ve tried loads. It definitely does take time to blend, but once that’s done the tint takes on a blurring effect and the colour disappears, it no longer feels heavy and it becomes a fab primer under makeup - so much so that I’ve stopped using my Tatcha silk canvas primer. I use the Bondi Sands on my neck and chest to avoid tint on clothing. Can’t risk the sun in Oz! 😊

    Thank goodness you mentioned Eucerin at the end! I was starting to feel a bit forlorn as your list went on because I’m a Eucerin girl (I’m a Londoner). So glad you gave it your seal of approval. I use nearly all their products from the hyperpigmentation range and my skin looks a so much better as a 40 year old than it did as a 20 year old. When I compare photos, my skin looks younger, supple and so radiant.
    For holidays (vacations in hot countries), I think I’ll consider getting one of the Australia made ones (the way you pronounce it creases me up 😂)

  • @kirks1974
    @kirks1974 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wear the Naked Sundays zinc sunscreen every day. It is thick, but very moisturising so ut spreads well; I have stupidly dry skin but have no issues - in fact it helps hide the dryness. Supposedly the tint disappears after application, and while I feel I can see some colour on my pale skin, it certainly doesn’t give the strength of colour you’d think when you first see it. Because of this slight tint it actually makes me look a bit healthier than I often feel. As I said though, I’m really pale, so while there’s no cast on me there may well be on darker skin tones. The most important factors for me are that it doesn’t feel heavy after application (and doesn’t attract dirt etc like old school sunscreens), and it doesn’t set off my sensitive skin at all. Despite being a bit spendy I’d keep repurchasing for those reasons alone, but luckily I’m happy with it overall.

    I have been using sun protection for about 7 years and have been using tretinoin for 3 years. The most important thing for me in sun protection is the UVA protection value. The values are very difficult to find out. LaRoche Posey liquid 50 has approx. 46. I know one protection, the p20 from Riemann has an even higher value. However, I get milia in masses from this one. The label ++++ doesn't say too much, 1/3-1/2 of the UVB value. It would be interesting to know which sunscreens have high UVA protection values.
    In any case, I no longer want to do without sun protection, it really makes a big difference.
    Thank you very much for your great content, Dr. Idriss.

    In future videos about sunscreen it would be great if you could talk about if the ingredients are reef safe. I live in Hawaii and everything we use eventually ends up in the ocean (no sewage treatment here, just septic tanks) so that’s a really important factor for me. Also I always figure if a chemical is nasty enough to kill the coral it isn’t something I want to put on my face everyday. Mahalo for this great video and all the content you put out. ❤
