How Do You Test A Water Pump? Testing An Engine Water Pump.

  • Every year thousands of water pumps are replaced because the engine is overheating, but haven't been tested. You can test many water pumps in a few minutes with the right tools and save hundreds of dollars and downtime. @AdeptApe on Venmo or AdeptApe@yahoo.com on PayPal for donations, thank you so much for supporting the channel!

    Hello, I have a C12 that is getting some coolant in the crank case. I have watched many of your videos which by the way are great. On one of your other videos you say that the pump weep hole on my motor goes into the crankcase. I am not overheating and in fact my operating temperature is very stable and where it usually is. Could the water pump be the culprit here and can I test it like you did on the C 15? The motor also started to get a lot of blow by but I.m not sure if this related to the coolant in the crank case or possibly another problem. Motor seems to be running well,however I use 3 gallons of oil between changes at 12000 mile intervals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    What was the test with the bottle? Did you hook up a bottle with water onto the high pressure discharge of the surge tank to determine it was over pressuring instead of using a cooling system pressure tester?

    • @robertfrancis4202
      @robertfrancis4202 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bro, you mainly use the pressure tester to find an external leak in the system. Using the water filled bottle from the overflow/ vent tube from the tank just shows pressure entering the cooling system internally.

    @Teslaharmonic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could save a heap of time and inconvenience by simply attaching a gauge to the pressure cap..... raise the pressure to 1.5 bar blip the throttle and you will notice a small reduction and then a stabilisation....if your gauge stays down you will shave a restriction (radiator etc)....if you don't have any pull down or reduction in pressure.....the the impeller may be corroded .
    Always remember to pressure test the system cold and the cap also before proceeding deeper first .

Problem is there is no evidence of water in crankcase, dipstick, and no water vapor coming out of exhaust. Also no water loss coming from air compressor to air tanks. And no traces of water inside cylinder head or head cover. You think perhaps my water pump is not circulating water?

  • @poellot

    Testing here could possibly give higher reading than testing where cat says to test in the plug, number 2 on cats illustrated. Correct? Because where cat says to check is much farther away from the outlet of the pump. I assume that is why cat whats you to check it at the thermostat housing. But it should be very minimal difference right?

    • @poellot
      @poellot ปีที่แล้ว

      I just checked the 3406e vs c15 test procedure and the 3406 says a specific plug in the t-stat housing. The c-15 just says remove a plug in the housing. The older 3406 also does not specific a specific rpm. It just says atleast 15 psi. So i should be safe to assume 1400 rpm the 3406e should also be atleast 15psi. Right? I only have 12. So pretty sure that is why the truck is overheating.

    • @beckywatt5048
      @beckywatt5048 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Midnight Mechanic Cracks aren't generally an issue ,only in gasoline engines with thin castings (generally Ford's) acidic antifreeze causes pinholes which are by far more common in unmaintained diesel engines.

    • @MidnightMechanic
      @MidnightMechanic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of Diesel engines can form cracks from sheer vibration and cylinder pressures, those cylinder walls are way too thin for my comfort for them to hold up under load, especially since the head gaskets are proof they couldn't hold up to the heat and pressure.

    • @clydeacor1911
      @clydeacor1911 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Midnight Mechanic you can't really tell how thin those cylinders are just from looking at them from the top of the engine without pulling the sleeves out. big diesel engines such as this one doesn't have cylinders like a gas engine that are actually part of the engine block, these are cylinder sleeves that you can pull out and replace. in all my year's of doing diesel engines i've never really seen one that wore so thin that it would crack, you would have a lot more problems long before that would happen and yes I've seen a lot of cracked cylinder sleeves but not really from being worn thin. before that would happen your engine would have so much blowby it would make you choke on all of the smoke and that would be if you could even get it started due to the lack of compression to get the fuel to combust.

    seems like a lot of work, most stuff nowadays have a temp gauge you can look at to determine the same thing.

    • @ludditeneaderthal
      @ludditeneaderthal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Temp gauge doesn't tell if there is flow. You'll go hot from a radiator core with bug clogged fins, a stuck thermostat, blown head gasket, cracked exhaust runner, and lots of other Gremlins. None of those are the water pump. A bad pump will show low head pressure until you boil coolant in the jackets. A cracked liner will show pressure spiking high rapidly. Bug filled fins will show normal head pressure rise until the thermostat allows the entire system to overheat, then "boiler Spike", or sudden dropping as the cap releases because of the head pressure with the stat wide open. His vacuum coolant retention actually hid some of the pressure Spike from the blown gasket, but the fairly rapid temp rise remained.

Now I'm putting another ECM from another Cat motor on there with a new wiring harness I hope this fixes the problem., the used one of them fixing to put on there has been turned up to a 550 it's been checked by the ET and hopefully it lasts more than 4 days for $850. If this one burns out what the hell could be the problem.
