How To Test If Your Water Pump Is Bad

What I can tell you from experience on two occasions in diagnosing “overheating” on heavy equipment, just because the water pump is creating flow at “normal-moderately high” temperatures does not mean it is not the culprit. John Deere forestry equipment in my experiences, but also in a lot of modern car/truck manufacturing companies, dealers have moved to plastic-type impellers. Those plastic impellers expand under what I will call “extreme” conditions and cause the impellers to ever so slightly separated from the metal shafts they are pressed onto. That slight separation under 235F + heavy load conditions will cause inadequate water flow and lead to overheating. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😂🤙🏻

Very smart. Even professional mechanics we don't want to spend a lot of money in sofisticated equipment for a simple water pump test.

What is the substance that gives color to water? the one you poured into the water?
I just pull the radiator cap & make sure I have good flow through the fins as the thermostat opens up.
No flow? Bad pump
I have a leak under the truck. By the spot its " suspected" to be the water pump. It takes from the resevoir but doesnt replace it back into the reservoir. Oh and I have a grinding sound coming from the front of the engine. Any clue?
shawn werley There seems to be a failed gasket in the water pump and water sounds like it’s draining from the weep hole.

I'm having a similar problem but different truck. Flushed twice and new thermostat, hoping it's not water pump. Did u get this fixed? What was the issue?
You better hope it is the water pump and not a blown head gasket. Ever figure out the problem?
You flushed it twice? Is it losing coolant?
Its not always easy to see it leaking from waterpump.. make sure your oil is a good color and not creamy ( mixed with water )
Radiator , therm , waterpump and fan ...my guess is waterpump if you done thermostat..and radiator isnt cracked lol

The water pump may function but the bearings get worn & can leak & get worse over time
If you're going as far as to remove the hose from the pump, you may as well go ahead and change it.

Just use your hand tool and squeeze hose, feel for a rush of water

This is a good video, i know something similar form a china supplier, Chonqging feilong jiangli is a very professional supplier to supply water pumps, oil dipsticks, rubber parts etc.

What was the squeaking noise from? Mine sounds exactly the same and gets worse with acceleration. It slows down closer to op temp.
My water pump is going out I know so I thought it was that. But now I'm not so sure if your water pump was good. I replaced the drive belt tensioner and the belt is good so it's not that. My next guess was the water pump or the pulley. Not sure if I should be concerned with the squealing or not.
Anthony Erbes it could be one of your pulleys. However, it could also be something easy like your serpentine belt. If you pour a tiny bit of water on the serpentine belt and the squeaking goes away, then it’s your belt, which is easy to fix. It could also be something else out of alignment.
I believe he just spilled water on the belt and they squeak till it gets dry done it a bunch
