      I have just re-started quilting after not quilting for about 10 yrs and have not used any of the pre cuts. I used to da a lot of log cabin quilts with 2" or 1.5" strips so I guess a jelly roll might be my jumping off point lol.

    Thank you as a beginner would like to see s smaller projects start to finish. And excuse my ignorance but what does the term “on point “ mean? Just learning 🙂

    • @lynnslosson5937
      @lynnslosson5937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It means you turn the block so that the corners are at the top, bottom, and sides. The straight sides are on the diagonal, like a diamond.

    I am a new quilter- it seems like “ charm” is not universal? Or is it? Do the sizes change by manufacturer?

    • @expatpiskie
      @expatpiskie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charm is a 5in square. Moda trademarked the name, other companies may use different names. 10in squares are Layer Cakes - again Moda trademarked the name and the same size is available from other manufacturers using different names.

    • @vivilynnheath5107
      @vivilynnheath5107 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are supposed to be 5" but even within the Moda charm squares, the cutting is not consistent. Excluding the pinked edges, I was making four-patches from a Bella solid and Parfait batik and the solid was a full 1/4 inch larger than the batik. Instead of 4 1/2" blocks, I wound up with 4 1/4" blocks. Threw off my entire quilt as I had to trim down all of my halfsquare triangle blocks, too. Quilt top came out several inches smaller all around.
      Much prefer charms squares hand cut with no pinked edges. Check out Jordan Fabrics.

      @@vivilynnheath5107 I thought I bought a charm pack with pinked edges, but they are not. I worry about fraying. Should I trim them with my pinking shears just a little?

    • @vivilynnheath5107
      @vivilynnheath5107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phxgidget If the squares are Batiks, no worries. For the most part, Batiks don't ravel. You need to measure the square. If it is exactly 5 inches, remember you only have 1/4" around. If you cut into it with pinking shears, you're going to diminish your seam allowance somewhat. Even with pinked charm squares, there are differences between the way companies measure their charms. Some measure the 5" from the outside "peak," which means the "valley" is within the seam allowance. I prefer charms that measure from the "valleys." That way I get a full 1/4" seam allowance.
      I often cut my own squares with regular scissors have no problems with ravelling.

      @@vivilynnheath5107 Thank you very much. I'm nervous to start my first quilt, but at least its a quilt not a formal gown or anything 😉
