  • This mission focuses on landing. Various factors influence landing, such as crosswind, weather (rain/snow), visibility, etc. There are many ready missions available in the default TE mission. For this mission, I have considered three ‘High’ conditions: high gross weight (GW), temperature, and elevation. These factors affect the approach speed, landing distance, and braking energy. In this situation, the landing requires a longer runway length, and you must calculate the landing distance accordingly.
The airfield is Samjiyon, near Chunji Lake at Mt. Baekdu. It is the highest located in Korea at 4,478 feet. Due to the hot summer season, the surface temperature is set at 45 degrees Celsius. The F16 is carrying a full load of weapons and fuel. The gross weight is 37,000 lbs, carrying 4 A120B missiles, 12 Mk82 LG bombs, and an ALG184 ECM pod, with a drag index (DI) of 312. The F16 is on the final approach, 15 nm from the runway. Request clearance to land. This mission is more challenging than a normal landing mission due to the heavier gross weight. The plane is lighter after consuming ~2,500 lbs of fuel during training, bringing the gross weight to 35,000 lbs. The high gross weight, high temperature of 45 degrees, and high elevation of 4,478 ft require the F16 to need a longer runway. The total landing distance, including aero-braking and wheel-braking, is estimated to be 7,400 ft, which is sufficient for the longer Samjiyon runway of 7,700 ft. The approach speed is estimated to be ~180 KCAS. However, execute the landing procedure correctly, or the F16 may overrun the runway, or the braking system could fail. Samjiyon airbase has two runways, one shorter and one longer. Land on the longer runway.
    Considerations:
    1. Airbase: Samjiyon (elevation: 4478'), Temperature: 44°C, Pressure: 29.92 inHg, Gross Weight (GW): 35,000 lbs, Drag Index (DI): 312; no wind.
    2. Approach speed: 181 KCAS (203 KTAS); touchdown speed: 171 KCAS (193 KTAS).
    3. Estimated landing distance: 7,300 to 8,300 feet, considering:
    a. Aero-braking: 5,200 feet for an AOA of 13 degrees
    b. Wheel-braking: 2,100 feet
    c. Touchdown margin for high approach speed and flare: 0 to 1,000 feet
    4. Aero-braking: Typically performed at an AOA of ~13 degrees. This results in a longer rolling distance than usual. The transition speed from aero-braking to wheel-braking generally starts below 100 KCAS.
    5. Enhanced aero-braking: For additional margin, an AOA of 14 degrees is recommended. The transition speed from aero-braking to wheel-braking starts earlier, around 110 to 120 KCAS. In this scenario, braking absorption energy is higher and reaches a caution level.
    6. Runway: Samjiyon 230L has a runway length of 7,690 feet; for safety, land here.
    7. Barometric altitude: 4070 feet on the runway due to high temperature, although corrected by current pressure. High temperatures make you feel like you are flying higher, while low temperatures make you feel lower than expected. Note that low temperatures are dangerous during landing.

FYI in those situations you should call for a heavy landing with approach. It will grant you the longest runway automatically even if it’s in use for take offs
