  • At certain airbases, the approach trajectory to a runway might be obstructed by elevated terrain or restricted airspace. If there is a tailwind exceeding 15 knots when landing in the opposite direction, the preferred procedure is circling to land. Gimhae Airport is one such example. Due to a hill in front of Runway 180, a direct approach is impossible, requiring most airplanes to circle to land. This approach is non-precision, and if you lose sight of the runway during the approach, you must execute a go-around.
    Considerations:
    1. Gross Weight (GW): Heavy, 39,000 lbs (carrying four Mk84 GP bombs, a center-line tank, and four AIM-120 missiles)
    2. Weather: Incremental and raining; visibility: 5 nm; wind: 167 degrees at 25 knots
    3. Approach Speed: 186 KCAS
    4. Calculated landing Distance: 8,300 feet; Gimhae Runway 18R/36L length: 10,000 feet
    5. Runway Alignment: Use TACAN to align with the runway heading of 181 degrees before circling
    6. The circling maneuver begins by aligning with the runway and preparing a watch or hack time. Start the timer and turn left by 45 degrees into the empty space. After approximately 53 seconds, turn right to the runway heading. Keep an eye on the runway frequently. After passing the abeam of the runway threshold, start a 180-degree turn and enter the final approach.
