Hey, actual biologist here! The whole meme about “everything becomes a crab in the end” came from a misunderstanding of the term carcinisation. Carcinisation refers to the tendency of non-crab crustaceans to evolve a crab-like body plan. It only applies to crustaceans (and other chelicerates), not all forms of life. Also, evolution does not end up with the most “optimized” body plan. Bits are kept as long as they are not actively detrimental to survival. Evolution will simply be selecting for what fits into and survives the environment best.
To go with the theme of weird animated fish movies, you should look at a movie called "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" I used to watch when I was a kid. It's about a man who loves fish so much and he wishes to be one and then he gets pushed off a pier and somehow turned into a fish. He saves and falls in love with a actual fish and in the end he breaks up with his HUMAN wife to be with the fish. It's a fever dream
It was also a big influence for the Disney animators when they did “The Little Mermaid”. Mr. Limpet even makes a brief cameo in the “Under the Sea” sequence.
“Overweight” animated characters are usually weird like that. Hell, Homer Simpson is 6’0, and only weighs 239 pounds and yet his stomach is shaped like a beach ball.
This movie could well be a long lost Don Bluth film, the character designs, the stereotypical toddler with pigtails, even the disturbing villain with an equally harrowing demise, it really has the hallmarks of early Don Bluth films.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. Its such a strange, but fun, ride. I also love the defeat of the villain in this movie. The main character basically played on his pride to literally drown himself by becoming too human. The way he, or rather his corpse, just floats away in utter silence is *chilling*
As a French, this movie is a way to recognize people with good movie taste, only a few know about this movie, I had the Vhs when I was young, I know the movie by heart ❤
I rewatch this movie from time to time, it’s so nostalgic. I’ve always really liked how mature it was at moments, as it wasn’t afraid to show blood or just drastic moments in general. It’s rare for family movies to treat its audience so maturely. Sometimes movies act like kids are the dumbest species on earth, and this movie said ARE THEY? WATCH THIS. 26:20 Chuck became o lot more chill in general. He was very “I gotta listen to my mama, I’m a good boy” kind of guy and then you can see him at the end, just having fun at the slide - uncaring. Also the music SLAPS
My older sister watched this movie a few years ago with her kids, and they all liked it. It looks like a pretty decent film that I might want to see. Good video, as always. 😊
I watched this one a lot when I was young! You say the stakes weren't high but I remember the fake-out at the end making me nervous every time. Plus the villain is scary! And the setting really has an eerie vibe that I remember though the details are foggy.

I don't quite agree that the characters don't develop. The little sister starts by not wanting to let go of the seahorse, but ends up sending her overboard, of her own free will, without selfishness. Otherwise, I agree with what else you say. I am Danish, and was a child when this film came out, and hold it close to my heart. Try checking out Valhalla, The War of the Birds, and The Monkeys and the Secret Weapon. Danish cartoons are not for children, but I loved it.

this movie might seem mid but among Dutch audiences it used to be pretty big! That is because a Belgian band called K3 (who made songs for kids) made a dutch cover of the danish song that went with the movie. K3 used to be CRAZY popular in the early 2000's so when they released that song a lot of kids saw it!
I watched this move with some friends a while back because we were all bored and one of them was like "want an obscure movie no one knows about?" Yeah, it's definitely flawed and had lots of lost growth potential but... it was fun xD I think it's one of those movies that didn't have a point to prove, just here to have fun drawing fish making funny faces and kids getting pummeled in the face

I think there were 2 Junji Ito anthology series, one more recently on NEtflix, the other was available (maybe still) on Crunchyroll. Gyo is the one with the shark on mechanical legs, I think it had a film adaptation, but might be getting a newer one. But I'm pretty sure Uzumaki is getting an anime adaptation proper, which I don't think it's actually had an animated one, but there was a live action one in 2000 and Gyo's animated "film" was in 2012
