That location is a target rich environment for landscape photographers Christian. I think it would not matter where you go there, there’d be frames on offer no matter where you put your tripod. It’s good you put yourself in that location to take advantage of everything from the comfort of your van. I did not realize you were hypoglycemic? Your must carry snacks everywhere in your bag? A great video and adventure to watch and I really liked your first shot.
Hi Adrian, oh yes, this place is definitely heaven for landscape photographers, there are so many possibilities for compositions. But you know, I always try to find the best possible composition that reflects what I feel for a place. That's really such an enjoyment for me 🙂 To be honest, I was not sure about the right word. I don't have a permanent hypo illness, fortunately, it was just my blood sugar that went totally down temporarly for some days (but heavy, I saw black!), because I didn't eat much carbonhydrates the weeks before and what I didn't mention in the video, because I didn't realize that at the time when I recorded it: I "forgot" completely to eat the days before. It was like, I went home from hiking late in the night, no dinner anymore. Next morning I went up early in the morning for hiking, no time for breakfast. At noon I went home to the van to work for my company, not enough time for a real lunch. Doing that for several days is not good when you are high up in the mountains and want to go on with hiking with a heavy photography bag 🙂 But for a while I really had to take snacks with me to get my blood sugar to a normal level again. Thanks a lot for your kind words, my friend. Enjoy your weekend, Christian
Hi Chris, vielen lieben Dank! Ja, es geht schon deutlich besser. Aber es hat tatsächlich ein paar Tage gedauert, um die Speicher wieder zu befüllen 🙂 Schöne Grüße aus den Bergen, Christian
A very good decision to make new plans. Ifs better to be safe then sorry. Hope you felt better a few days later. I loved the shot from the cavem very nice framing there. Grt guido
Hi Guido, thank you so much, my friend 🙂 I think, health should always have first priority, but I'm more than happy that the hike worked that day with all the circumstances and that I got out some photographs, as well. Enjoy your Sunday, Christian
Hi Denis, thanks a lot, my friend 🙂 I think there are different light situations that would add to this composition. Golden hour would definitely be a possibility. But to be honest, I'm happy that I came healthy through the day 🙂 Have a great weekend, Christian
Hi Darren, thank you so much, buddy! I'm really grateful that I came through the day and I'm happy with the photos, as well 🙂 Have a great weekend, Christian
BW photos of the Dolomites always remind me of my mother. She used a Zeiss double lens reflex to take photos when she hiked and climbed there in the late 1930s and 1940s. So, your BW are reminiscent of those that she took. What a fantastic location!
So fantastic to hear that my black & white photos remember you to those of your mother, Erich 🙂 The Dolomites are a fantastic area for shooting black & white. It supports that roughness of these spectacular mountains. I'm sure, I will take some more monochrome images on my trip here 🙂 Nice greetings, Christian
Good that you listen to your body. The rule in wilderness is not to take a change and keep an eye on the map, the compass and the weather. It’s the photographer that is important not the Gear...
that lake thing...i wondered if you might get a nice "mirror" if you used a deep ND from your kit to smooth the water reflections, and, maybe a side-effect, it could be interesting to see if the clouds and shadow edges might be softened a bit?? and, even "disappear" some of those pesky hikers... just thinkin'
I think therefore the clouds didn't move fast enough. But it could work with 15 stop ND and very fast clouds. The people were sitting at the shore of the lake and also didn't move 🙂
hypo glei see me a 🙂 I had a colleague with that and she always carried a candy bar or something like that with her in the event she had an episode. It can be dangerous and it is definitely a life interrupter at times. Hopefully you are feeling better now. Shame it hit you when it did. Gorgeous scenery!!!!! Loved the first photo as it really showed the beauty of the Dolomites. Same comment about the one from the cave.
Hi Erich, I was not sure about the right word, to be honest. I googled for a word that matches the german word "Unterzuckerung" and found that hypo word, which I really struggle with, haha 😂 But it is not a permanent hypo illness, fortunately, it was just a kind of exhaustion for some days. My glyco storages were simply empty. Eating sweet snacks all few hours helped me to get my blood sugar back to a normal level. Meanwhile I feel even better than before. I've planned also some longer and really steep hikes to epic places here in the Dolomites. I think that will be possible, hopefully 🙂 Thank you so much for your kind words, my friend. I really appreciate :) Have a great weekend, Christian
Yes, that's true. It is hard to connect to nature with so many people around. But I tried to ignore them, because I knew they would go home on later afternoon and I have mother nature for me alone 🙂 Nice greetings, Christian
Oh yes, I liked the view. I just didn't have a lens withe me that was short enough, to be honest 🙂 But I don't want to complain. I'm quite happy with the results I got while facing that hypo thing 🙂 Thank you and nice greetings, Christian
Hi. In a composition by the water with a stone, it would be useful to photograph in this place at different times with different lighting, and then let the audience see how one differs from the other. And not just to say that I will not shoot now because the light is not perfect. So you can wait for half a year and not wait for the desired ideal. And then why go to epic places, except to take pictures. Nature is always unique and it is necessary to fix its various states for its growth and to maintain the interest of the viewer.
Hi Юрий, thank you for your thoughts, my friend! I agree, it could indeed be interesting to show up how a single photograph looks in different light and weather situations. But that would be a great idea for an own video. In this one instead I gave another important tip: sometimes it is simply better not to take a photograph. Sometimes it is better just to build up compositions in your head. I see so many photographers running around with their camera in their hands, jumping from one corner to another and taking snapshots every day. For me, in the end of the day the question is if I got a really strong image. An image that is worth the paper and ink to get printed. I don't tend to print snapshots, just photographs where everything came together. So why would I want to take photographs where I know already that it would not work? Especially on a photo tour which goes over multiple weeks like this here, I take the time I need, I invest into quality. And to be honest, as I didn't have internet there and the weather seemed to have its own life, it was quite difficult to predict what would happen. So I didn't know that I would come back to the lake on that same day. I think the video shows quite well that lying in the grass, waiting and observing could sometimes lead to better results than snapping around. But again, I like you idea of showing one image in different light situations. Maybe I will consider that in another video, we will see. Thank you and nice greetings, Christian
Hi Tim, thank you so much for caring about me, my friend. I really appreciate! I didn't eat enough, that was not a good idea. It took me multiple days to recover. But meanwhile I feel even better than before, I have to say. So, I'm able to go on with all my planned photo tours here in the Dolomites. It will get epic 😉 Thanks a lot and enjoy your weekend, Christian
Hi Rok, my words 🙂 I always try to avoid crowds, but that's not possible during the day at Tre Cime. I see a hike like that as a great opportunity for finding compositions. The photos can be taken later the day when most people return home 🙂 Thanks a lot for watching, my friend! Nice greetings, Christian

unglaublich viele leute on that mountain!
seems hard to keep some sense of beauty when the trail looks like leading to an anthill!

Thank you Christian for the detailed answer! )))
I hope you're by now well recovered from your hypoglycaemic exhaustion!
Hi Tim, thank you so much for caring about me, my friend. I really appreciate!
