Stop Photographing Subjects! It prevents you from getting strong photos...
As soon as I stopped looking for subjects in the classic way, my photography improved massively. There is a big misconception about subjects in photography, which prevents you from getting really strong images. In this video I reveal a much more powerful and even easier way.

    on my recent dream trip to Iceland I had planned a lot of photographs, but I hadn't counted on bad luck... 5 days out of 6 of rain and zero solar storms 😅😅 We spent every evening checking the weather maps to see if there would be a gap in the clouds on our route, a break from the rain, the possibility of photographing the aurora... And on the last day, thanks to the study of the maps, we decided to bet everything on one location, skipping other stops. And in the end we managed to see the northern Lights ... Now I look at the photographs that I took in non-ideal conditions and they are still beautiful for me because we tried to get the most out of what we had. now a technical question on Photrus: how far in advance of the chosen event do you have a reliable forecast? now I'm going to review your other videos, maybe you've already talked about. Always beautiful content in your videos!

    • @christian.irmler
      @christian.irmler 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Stefano, so great to hear that it worked with the northern lights in the end 😊 To your question about reliable results: in general, it is not possible to predict weather all too far in the future. I mean, we could use models that offer us forecasts for 16 days in the future, but they are wrong 😊 They just show tendencies. Photrus only uses reliable data, which means up to ~48 hours on very high-resolved weather data, but also here are differences, especially between different phenomena, but in average I would say: predictions 48 hours in the future are likely, predictions 24 hours in the future are very likely, and predictions 12 hours in the future are accurate. The biggest exception is the phenomenon sunrise/sunset with gappy clouds (which uses an additional gappy clouds algorithm for the gappy cloud phenomenon for Premium users) and it predicts the weather in extreme fringe situations. You need quite a lot of things coming together for this one. I made an interesting video about that, by the way: th-cam.com/video/tf0id9TkWtE/w-d-xo.html Fog predictions of Photrus are also different from common fog forecasts, as it also takes the difference updrift into account. I explained that in this video: th-cam.com/video/FEISPOtA7P0/w-d-xo.html Another difference is also that Photrus looks at real data from the past in some situations. It is not really possible to compare it with other tools, as it calculates phenomena, not only raw weather data. It goes far beyond that. I hope that helps 😉 Have a great weekend, Christian

Even the usage of an equalizer on the viewer's side could change the ratio between speech and music. I think, in fairness, that you should acknowledge that Photrus is not just a company sponsoring your videos, but is actually _your own_ company, working from software you coded. Very impressive! My only question is exactly how many servers, supercomputers, etc. do you need to generate worldwide coverage at such a fine level of resolution?

    • @christian.irmler
      @christian.irmler 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @ravenfallsphotography6254, oh yes, it is my baby, of course 😊 In some videos I mention me as the developer, but I'm currently not sure if that is really a good idea, I have to say. I think, it could support that message of "You need to be a technical affine person to become a good photographer". Something many beginners think, in my experience, but that is simply wrong and that is a trend I would like to go again. I don't know if that is the right way, not to mention me as the developer, to be honest. I'm currently just experimenting with that. But your feedback is something I will definitely think about in the future, so thank you therefore, my friend! To your question of servers: The truth is that I don't know the exact number of servers 😊 There are 2 layers: Layer 1 are supercomputers from different weather providers who offer really exact point weather predictions. I don't know their exact server number or cpu-number etc., but they I guess that are many. These predictions are extremely accurate, exactly what we need, but they are also quite expensive to us. And as we - again - seldom photograph just a point in a landscape, we purchase a huge amount of point weather predictions in a radius of 1000 to 1200 kilometers around each single photo location of our clients. So, it is a solution on demand: we purchase them for each single photo spot of our clients, if a clients wants to get an accurate photography weather prediction at a photo location. Based on that there is a second layer, which calculates the photography weather phenomena like red sky, rainbows, golden clouds, etc. That is made by our algorithm on our servers on a high availability cluster. That is a cluster of multiple servers, which we cascade, according to the number of clients and number of photo locations we have to observe. Meanwhile we have clients all over the world, though we anyway don't calculate weather phenomena on each possible photo location on our planet. The number of servers is growing and growing, depending on the number of clients and photo spots. So, no way to tell a fix number of servers. But there are already a lot of CPU cores working and that 24 hours a day 😊 There is a lot going on in the background. Our clients don't see all that of course. For them the only interesting thing is to get an alert email with suggestions where to photograph to get stunning light and weather. And that is exactly what Photrus offers them. I hope that gives at least a little insight for you 😉 Enoy your Sunday, Christian

    Very informative video Christian. It's so true with the weather changing quickly. You can only plan so much but the rest is up to nature. Guess we just have adapt to what nature gives us and shoot accordingly. Cheers buddy 🙏

    • @christian.irmler
      @christian.irmler 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Adrian, thanks a lot, buddy 😊 Yes, it is never a 100% thing, but the mentioned point weather predictions are really extremely accurate. Not comparable to the output of common weather apps. It is just that they are not useful for landscape photographers, as again: we seldom photograph just a point in a landscape 😀 The solution is really to use hundretthousands of point weather predictions in a section of 1000x1000km around each photo spot, as Photrus does to calculate its own models, based on photography weather phenomena. Predicting these photography phenomena just works because of those accurate point weathers. But in the end of the day, as you said: the skill of adapting is anyway really, really important. Because sometimes even the best forecasts fail. Thanks a lot and have a great Sunday, Christian

    I am not sure that I agree with everything. To me it is clear that effort outweighs everything. I don't disagree with you on this. However, my personal inclination is documentary photography and I do this very well. Here effort, inclination and "talent" seem to have made me useful in that sphere. However, I have been trying to change to landscape (as impacted by Humans). Here I have been trying and trying (I do see improvement). However, I have a friend and she "sees" the scene and does appreciably better with landscape with less effort than I. Hers are excellent and mine are mediocre, average or bad. Hers are always good. She has an "eye" for good composition and light in landscapes. I know those things and apply them but she can always outdo me because she has a feel for it whereas I have to work at it. So, I think personal talent does play a large role in how quickly one applies one's vision to the process. I enjoy the photographic process and photograph for myself and not others. I can identify a great landscape photo. I can even tell you why I think it is great. However, I've not translated that knowledge to taking great landscapes. By inclination, I document rather than make fine art. Have the same deficiency in music which I also love.

      Hi Erich, yes, I agree: talent definitely has an impact, but in my experience it can be compensated by putting more effort in. That is something that gets often overlooked. Fortunately, landscapes don't run away. So, at least in most of the cases, we have all the time in the world to work on a composition 😊 Thanks a lot for watching, my friend! Enjoy your weekend, Christian

    Ultimately everyone can, and should, decide for themselves which lens is a better choice for them. The fact you feel qualified to make that decision for anyone else is why I subscribed, and then unsubscribed from your channel. I thought I'd give it another shot. No more.

      Hi Patrick, I think you got me wrong. I never make any decisions for others, I just share my long-term experiences in my videos. Everyone can and should decide by himself which type of lenses he prefers, of course. The arguments I mention in my videos should just inspire, based on more than 30 years of experience. If you don't agree with my points, feel free to put your own experiences in a comment. My videos are always to be understood as an open discussion, which can even be really interesting. I'm always interested myself in other perspectives and experiences. However, I'm sorry to hear that you left. Wish you all the best for the future. Nice greetings, Christian

    Good video and an interesting and up-beat discussion! I'm not in the 'better or worse' camp for this. My experience is that zooms and primes are optimal in different situations. My bag always has two primes in it - a fisheye and a mid-tele macro. These two only add a kilo to the carry and give me a lot of options. I'll then only take big primes if i have a specific image in mind that is suited to a given focal length. So, for me, the 'better choice' depends on the particulars of the location and subject matter.

      Hi @luzr6613, yes, I see that exactly like you: it depends on what you want to photograph. When it comes down to portrait photography, for instance, or even astrophotography, prime lenses are definitely the better choice. I was primarily talking about classic landscape photography in this video, of course. But also here: fisheye lenses are usually prime lenses, but can be quite a good idea to use for landscape photography. I think, I saw a Canon that was zoomable, but I've never used it. Difficult architecture 😊 Thanks a lot for your kind comment, my friend! Nice greetings, Christian

    Great video. You are right that prime lenses are better in image quality but like you said a pro grade zoom is realy really good also. It's just how high demanding you are on the images. I never use primes. I prefer to find the composition exactly right in the field instead of processing. I always feel that prime lenses put limitations on my possibility. Thanks for sharing! Hi Guido, yes, I see it like you. They are sharper, lighter, faster, and cheaper, but they limit me in my possibilities when it comes down to framing up a composition 😊 Thanks a lot for watching, my friend! Nice greetings, Christian

    Always enjoy watching your videos Christian. Totally agree with you. For landscape photography the versatility of the zoom lens far outweighs the extra sharpness of the prime lens in my opinion

    Thanks for an interesting video. It is also a matter of what you are used to using lenses. Usually they have a narrow area where they are at their best and if you are pixel peeping, you will have problems if you do not buy the most expensive systems such as MF, LF or FF, which is not possible for me yet. I've mostly been interested in the artistic, so I sold my Zoom optics when I went digital and it's only recently that I've acquired 3 Zooms, one of which is a cheap amateur lens.

      @christian.irmler หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thomas, it is definitely also possible to shoot landscapes with prime lenses, but then you have to deal with the mentioned limiations. An interesting question would be: would I prefer premium primes over cheap zooms for landscapes? I think, I would anyway go for the zooms in that case, as a clean composition is more important to me than high image quality. But I agree: if you like to shoot with primes, there is definitely nothing wrong with that. Photography is not only all about the goal, the photo. It is also all about the way to that photo, the journey. And limitations can also lead to creativity, on the other hand. That is also a thing we should take into account 😉 Enjoy your weekend, Christian

    Are there cases where f-stop and t-stop are significantly different in noise production? (So, for example, setting aside any differences in optical quality, comparing a prime and a zoom at comparable focal length but both at f5.6)?

    • @christian.irmler
      @christian.irmler หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Eric, thank you, that's a good question. Now, it is like that: if you mount 2 different lenses on your camera, which is in manual mode, you will get 2 slightly different exposure times at f/5.6, for instance, as each lens is different in light transmission. But the t-stop is not the number one criterion for me when it comes down to lens choice, I have to admit. It is an interesting value, though there are other things much more important to me, I have to say 😊 Thanks a lot for watching, my friend! Have a great weekend, Christian

    Hi Christian, it’s always a pleasure your videos every Saturday. Nowadays the Zooms are made in a very high quality. e.g. the 24-70 GMII is the gold standard, in real world almost no one can see the difference to the 50mm 1,4 GM, beside pixel peeping. I‘m exploring your channel more and more, from this video jumped to sharpening in LR, concerning to support the mood of the image, subtle and not with a sledge hammer. Great concept. 👍 Ended up with the three years old sharp photographs in the field. 😊 Wish you a nice weekend and a lot of fall colors. Liebe Grüße aus Berlin, Daniel

      Hi Daniel, yes, absolutely. The quality of zoom lenses is incredible today so that it is hard to tell a difference when we see two images side by side.
