One side of the nut assembly should have had a smooth bore to be able to pull the two halves together. Having both sides threaded will not allow the halves to get any closer than they are when welded.

Agree !!!
Yes, but the "wow" team, as you can see, does not know this, the lack of logic, but anyway they work hard. All respect to them.
I was trying to figure that out too. They serve little purpose other than the alignment is all I could figure out. I have so many questions about the process.
A neat little job .A couple of observations,
though :
1 . Top notch fabricating. Work with what you have .
2. Boots gloves safety glasses would help them out .
3. Get it up off the ground. I would build a fab table. Instead of working on my knees !
4.Some old timey classic country music . You know Cash Waylon Willy would do !
5 . Some Beers don't see no empty crushed beer cans ?
It wouldn't take much to straighten that axle housing out .....!
In the Western world these items would be scrapped, kudos to these guys making the repairs!
Our pleasure!
Back axles have been wwelded up from pieces for many years and never really fail thanks to weight regs and weighbridges making overloading an expensive criminal act.
This repair seems to be two good halves welded to make one.
I'd have welded on some extra strengthening pieces but then in normal use does th ebanjo get massively overloaded
Lots of these vidoes feature truck axles that have broken at one side due to wear and overload and bad roads so I think here they took two good halves to make one good complete one.
Thanks
It was cut in half to make this video. Nothing breaks that perfectly!
Just for content, not to reuse in a vehicle
It broke on the previous weld, you can see it about 3-4 minutes in.
@@12time12 I don't think so. Looks more like cut by plasma cutter ;-)

This is exactly why you have 50-60 year old trucks and buses still in operation in Pakistan/India and the rest. I remember as a boy, (I'm in my 60's now) a place near where I lived dismantled trucks and buses of the era and exported the parts to these countries where they are still in use today. This is simply because they are repaired and not scrapped like we do all too easily in the west. They are the original 'repair, reuse and recycle' nations. Respect to them, the west could learn a lot from them.
Very Thanks you By wow mechanics1
who gave you this information that 50-60 year old trucks are in operation in India. Here diesel vehicles cannot operate for more than 10 years and petrol and cng 6:44 vehicles are allowed only for 15 years.

Thanks by Wow Mechanics1
Fascinating, yes, we don't see repairs like this except maybe on farms where the repair is critical. I see the reason being the disproportionate values of material parts and labour. it is amazing what can be done with a welding machine, and there are some very skilled workers out there. The parts alignment alone is quite daunting I think. Enjoyed!
Can you imagine the load, or shall I say the overload, this truck was subjected to.
Thanks 👍

The triangle patch puts two of the primary welds into greater shear stress. Welds are ideally placed in shear. This welder/fabricator is good.
Thanks Sir
Thanks, I was wondering about that.

yes
I'm curious how all of the bolt holes line up once they get it back to the truck . I guess they can fix anything with enough welding rods and hammers . But why did it crack in the first place , over loaded , bad roads ? Both 😂
Its not a new banjo so its cyclical fatigue cracking the banjo. Together with overload or bad design and craftmanship. Its a welded banjo, like Scania has, I worked at the Scania factory where the banjo was manuf. There was some thermal stress relieveing operations on the scania banjo. So i believe that whne welding a banjo the devil is in the details for long life. A small material defect like poure or a welding defect at the high tension spot reduces the fatigue life a lot.
It looks like it was cut in half. Maybe to facilitate taking it apart after a seized bearing. I home this guys are religious, only prayers will keep it together.

ye right
That's what I was thinking, they could assemble it with the parts that's supposed to go in it, use the parts to align the housing then weld it up. Take the guess work out of it and be assured alignment is spot on unless of course they didn't have the parts on hand.

I think they used parts from two different axle housings. Then trimmed them to fit with oxy acetylene. Hence the melted edges on both parts.

Instead of cutting out the triangle and putting in a new piece. They should've put a long rectangle piece with rounded ends over the top about a 2 feet or half a meter long. Basically putting a truss on it.
Top and bottom and across the back of the diff. I thought they would have done that considering the future overloading it will be subjected to.

It would be great to monitor how this repair is holding over time. My guess is that it will depend on the extent of daily stress that the truck axle is under. Over-loading at this point is not a good idea. Under-loading a bit will keep the stress at a reasonable level. Amazing work and skill using what is available. Very impressive!

Don't think this axle broke like that, it most likely had some catastrophic bearing disaster on one side, and they found another junk axle that they could combine into one functional one.
That’s what I was thinking too but I can see an “aftermarket” reinforcement plate on the bottom side of both sides that match. Which then how the hell do they break it so perfectly in half!!!???
@@camwichert8185 Maybe there was some kind of casting/manufacturing defect that made it crack in the middle. Seems it is also more common to overload vehicles in some country's...

Wonder why they don't bolt the diff to it?
same thing I was thinking, that would line up everything instead of fighting as hard as they did

@guillermocarrillo3959 the repair was only for TH-cam viewers it will never go back in service.
hmm
Not going to ask why this and that, but I have noticed that they did not "groove" the edges on the outer side, and they did grind the weld down Groove is made so the weld penetrates better and when we need to grind off the weld to make the joint look nicer on the "show" side-on the "hidden" side, simple weld is done.
At work, we grind down such welding (as on this video) to the surface level if we want to BREAK apart the joint.
They do this work for peanuts. Like the saying goes, you get what you have paid for.

am i the only one seeing this??......threaded bolt and two nuts welded on either side of the break.....and threads in both nuts??......i'll wait......someone will understand where this boat sank......
There is a lot wrong with this video including the two threaded nuts that will not tighten together .
Since when has anything ever broken a perfectly straight line down the exact center of a differential. Additionally in terms of over load breaking, the middle section is strongest part when assembled. One of the axle arms should break away before the center would break. Any break would also be crooked and typically run from a hole to another hole. Good repair, good welding but this does not look authentic, this housing looks like it was cut in half.
@@wirefeed3419 i assumed it was a salvage tube, the two busted halves were canned and made one good tube out of two dickered ones

yes good advice me
my only recommendation to ensure the 2 axel pieces are welded with the right amount of GAP: hold the 2 pieces together. Get the front portion of the axel (the part with the KING bearing)...... put 3 bolts on each side just to hold the 2 pieces in place (with the holes ready to accept the front piece of the axel)....then tack weld the whole crack while the bolts hold the BOLT-PATTERN in place. Thanks.
How long will this repair last though...let me see this after a year or two of operation then I'll be impressed.
