i feel like in your culture, at least from other chinese people i've met on the internet, brash language seems much more frowned upon than in australia we use the C word (referring to a female reproductive organ) to mean both "friend" and "enemy" depending on tone and context, so australian culture is a lot more brash and a lot less sort of worried about offending because we're aware that the offensivisms are often light hearted. china appears serious to me. in their culture. i could be wrong though, would love to hear what you think.

I've found that you only learn the swear words first if you're learning the language later on (cause your parents and teachers aren't going to (consciously) teach you swear words). Like it was only recently that I learned any bad words past stupid or idiot (in mando) even though I've been speaking mandarin semi-fluently since I was little.
Brett and Eddy's mando might be in a similar state to mine, they can speak fluently to a certain degree but they don't know swear words/use them (in mando) enough for swearing to be a regular feature in their go to vocab.

*edited to add more nit picky translation suggestions. Hopefully they can help! and thank you for doing this!!
At 5:03, he's saying "our Chinese fans (fen si) in Boston"
also, at 8:24 Brett is making a pun lol. Zero is pronounced "ling" in chinese, so he's saying "rate us from zero to forty. Ling Ling to forty" haha. puns are kind of hard to explain in video captions though
11:44, I think is more along the lines of "..and make sure you really listen carefully to every note"
11:59 is another pun hah, Brett says Ling Ling (the daughter) will "ling ling" (a tinkling sound onomatopoeia).
14:33 is technically correct but I think what he's trying to say would translate more like "the problem is, we can't be performers" "because originally I did want to be a performer" (lmao eddy)
14:39 "you see, this is the reason i can't be a performer"
15:12 not entirely sure but i think it's something like "when you were designing merch, did you have ideas about fusing different things?"
16:05 Eddy does not read it out loud, but the question actually says "When are you getting married? Whose surname would the kids take?" ahah.

      Phoebe Keziah
6:34 (if you’re still taking translation tips) they’re saying “otherwise you(r fingers) will be tense”, in response to “press down lightly on the string”.
11:12 it’s unclear which type of instrument it is, but it’s most likely a violin or some other string instrument (or a piano)
11:37 More accurately, “(someone is) slaughtering chickens”... I felt that though that’s how my mom described my early violin playing
About 15:12, I believe 想法 is referring to “thoughts”, and... I couldn’t really clearly hear eddy and since I can’t read.. no idea exactly, but it sounds like the question is asking “what is your thought process behind creating your merch?” And in their answer, Eddy says (roughly) “I want musicians and performers to have a way to express their love for music“ (I said “love” because words he uses is stronger than just “like”, and I put in “music” bc the actual term translates more like... “artistic and literary items of great cultural significance”?).
Hope this helps out! I speak bc I’m a first gen immigrant (I was born in the US but my parents are from the mainland), but I never went to chinese school so I can’t help very much with the written bits... Still though, petition for Twoset to make more videos of them speaking mandarin bc it’s kinda nice sometimes to just listen to them talk, plus it’s nice to know I’m not alone in randomly substituting mandarin words with English ones

  • @overgrownsprout
    @overgrownsprout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +431

Translator-san, thank you for doing this but there are mistakes I would like to point out (as someone who is fluent in both languages) so that other lingling wannabes who don't speak Mandarin can understand them correctly. I've also included corrections for accuracy, but the major meaning incongruences are the ones you need to know about.
0:14 what eddy said was 十万, which is actually 100k (万=four zeros)
0:31 eddy was saying they haven't been practicing speaking chinese for a long time, so "practicing" that will be defaulted to violin practice unless stated otherwise might not be a good choice
0:38 干杯 means dry cup directly translated, in English it should be "cheers!"
0:51 疫情 means pandemic, not virus. Also being a little nit picky, but the full translation should be "my question is, when do you guys plan to have a concert in China? Would y'all think about coming to Beijing after the pandemic?"
0:58 情况 here should be "circumstances", not conditions
1:02 巡回 is touring, not flights. So "all the tours have been cancelled"
1:17 丢脸 actually means "lose [our] face" (direct translation), a better phrase here would be "we might make a fool of ourselves if we don't practice"
1:20 你会读吗 should be "Do you know how to read" while "can you read" might sound like eddy is asking brett to read.
1:37 The summary is not bad, but including the full meaning will be nice, which is "there are 44 dead astringent persimmon trees in front of the mountain, and 44 stone lions (alive lions, not figures) behind (at the back side of) the mountain. The trees killed the lions because they were too astringent (bitter), The lions bit the trees to death. So the question is, did the trees bitter the lions to death, or did the lions bite the trees to death?"
2:00 我卷舌跟不卷舌都搞混了 eddy is trying to say that he isn't sure if he should curl his tongue to pronounce some of those words (this is a way to pronounce some Chinese characters) so it should be "I'm mixing up (confused) over which words should be pronounced with tongue curl"
2:36 Brett said my chinese is not good enough (pls add 'enough' there because he said 够)😂
    2:44 没关系,我们要准备 It's okay, we're gonna prepare
2:51 Or are you guys not gonna come and we will be lonely?
3:08 记忆犹新 means fresh memories (any interesting or recent events?)
3:26 So a lot of incidents will happen. For example, "haven't booked the tickets yet".
3:48 Eddy: our own script, our own music, our own tickets, hotels, venues [Brett adds on: venues that we had to rent ourselves] microphones, [Brett says: pretty expensive]
3:50 Why didn't we want others to help us? The first reason is that nobody wanted to help. And when they do want to help, they would say stuff like "you are a musician! After selling the tickets, don't take the money." So fine, let's do everything ourselves.
4:05 It was scary, but it was fun. (I'm not sure why you used the word nervous throughout the video, but if you have a good reason please feel free to ignore this!)
4:53 Started to sell tickets a few weeks before the performance (sell tickets, not buy plane tickets), it was scary.
4:58 能上台和她表演就够了 "够" in this context didn't mean "all we need to do". Instead, Brett was trying to say that "we don't care how hard it is, being able to perform with hilary hahn on stage is worth it"
5:02 Our chinese fans in boston
5:05 What would be a good place to perform in Beijing?
5:18 Not chinese food, cuisine is a better word for 料理
5:20 问题 in here means technical question, not problem. fifth notes might be better replaced with "fifths" as how brett and eddy usually call them (but im not a violinist so nvm)
6:17 And if your fingers are too slender... Well at least you don't play the viola. (That is very different with "go play the viola"!)
6:27 I remember my teacher said the best way is to not put too much pressure. Relax, and the sound.. the fifths will come out.
6:34 因为会紧(not 轻as you might have heard) because it will be tight/tense (again, because of brett and eddy's limited vocab in chinese and im not a violinist, can't be sure what they wanted to convey.)
7:03 一千万 is actually 10 million (again, "wan" has 4 zeros) upon reaching that number, we will be there (china).
7:08 but because of the pandemic (not virus ;-;)
7:16 But y'all need to share our videos to your friends so that they would come to our show
7:32 brett and eddy, what are y'all's favourite skit character or scene in your whole career of classical music comedy? (Where did you get fanfic from??)
7:49 will you ever release your own recording album? ("When" should not be here because that's not in the original question)
8:01 yess!! You got 一百万 and one million correct!!
8:21 how's the progress of y'all learning chinese so far?
8:30 what kind of setbacks did y'all encounter when twosetviolin was newly established? How did y'all stand the pressure and insisted in doing what you love?
9:07 因为你们一直在看 because y'all are watching!
9:11 Brett needs to improve his chinese ;-; he is trying to say that a lot of people look up to them and picked up an instrument because of them.
9:25 But it wasn't like they were against what we were trying to do either, it was more of "what are you guys doing??"
9:28 You should be practicing hard, and continue studying in England.. masters, why are you making videos instead?
9:37 but im glad that we continued on... [brett: just believe in yourself]
9:52 That bread.. the puffy one
10:11 Me and Brett always said, if you could only eat one type of cuisine, which country's would you choose? We always said chinese cuisine.
10:40 Or have you seen videos on bilibili about playing the song "saima" on the violin? The ones with erhu bow (B 站 is 哔哩哔哩, not brett) Brett said "Me?" But that's because he didn't know what B 站 meant
11:06 after this pandemic ends. Again, not virus ;-; also might be a good idea to replace lute with chinese lute
11:11 My daughter has been learning the violin for a year, and in order to ease her suffering, I frequently let her watch your(plural) videos. A recent question is, for a beginner how to improve intonation?
11:27 are you suffering because of the sounds she make or is your daughter the one suffering? [Brett you need to improve your chinese, it was said there to ease her daughter's suffering]
11:31 I also think that when parents listen to the sound made as their kid first start out... [Brett: yeah, very painful.]
11:39 my playing sounded like I was killing a chicken
11:46 major meaning incongruence. "And you have to force yourself to listen carefully to each note." [Brett: yeah.. your daughter, ask her to keep listening (the intonation, not pieces!)]
11:53 if it is in tune, the tone will ring more, you will be able to tell. A good violin will ring more [brett was trying to say resonate, and eddy helped him translate]. Eddy: it will have resonance.
12:04 I remember you guys said that people who learn music and play an instrument will be able to focus on something more than non-musicians, especially in the modern era where people have short attention span. How do you guys focus for a long time (in terms of studying and practicing?) Love u!
12:36 "When you are sad." Heart hurt is a direct translation of 伤心😂
12:58 Brett: I like it if there is a challenge [Eddy: ah yes if it is too simple it will be boring] Brett: if there is a goal or if it is challenging, I will... [Eddy: I've noticed that if it is too easy or too hard, both will make you a bit distracted.] Because if it is too hard you... Brett: you give up. Eddy: Yeah give up. After a few tries you be like ugh never mind.
Too easy, and you be like what's the point of practicing?
13:40 we will think about it in the future.
14:08 if we could go back in time, and you stand at the life intersection with two choices, 1. Become a performer 2. Become successful TH-camrs (same as now), how would you two choose?
15:09 any ideas you want to incorporate into the merch when designing? There should be a meaning you want to covey everytime, right? What is it?
15:19 Yes, we wanted to have a way for people who learn music or musicians to express what they love (music culture).

The question at 15:12 basically asks Brett and eddy if they have any specific designs they want to add to their mercy. They’re asking them when they design their merch, if they usually have some message they want to convey!
