It’s always cool to see Loma Linda mentioned. I completed my masters there and here’s what I can say about their lifestyle factors that have the most impact:
    1) maintaining a healthy body weight
    2) no smoking or drinking
    3) very community and family oriented
    4) diet. Now, not all SDA’s diet is healthy, especially in the younger generations. But a lot of my professors grew their own vegetables and fruit, stayed away from animal products, and didn’t consume alcohol or smoke
    5) activity levels. Loma Linda residents definitely aren’t gym rats, but it wasn’t out of the ordinary to see 90+ year olds swimming laps at the rec center pool or playing tennis

The one single thing I would change would probably be regarding mental health. Change the way I'd think to a more open minded or (Seeing-things-in-the-bigger-picture) type of thing. Don't let the smaller issues or stress get the best of me, accept it and then move on and improve.

I just focus on getting 150-170g of protein per day, with a good chunk of fruit and veg included, oranges, apples, avocados etc. Always throw in my junk food too but on a much reduced basis, maybe some chocolate or ice cream once a week maybe twice when it's the misses time of the month and I join her for moral support. No alcohol, not even missing it and I'm Irish! Red meat once a week, lots of chicken/chic pea derived protein's.
Point is a balanced relationship with your food along with activity and you'll be doing just fine.
In January after the annual fattening period I was 210lbs and as of yesterday I'm down to 185lbs. I'm 5'-10" so not overly tall, so can't carry much weight without looking like a keg. I follow intermittent fasting about 1800-2100 calories per day, 15-20,000 steps a day. Only just started back at the gym last week to start toning up. It's all maintainable I think too. I can go out for a meal every now and then, count the cals and then get back on track the next day. Don't go on a crash diet, change your habits and don't cold turkey it and your on the road to success 👊

Small habits i noticed improved my life that i found out recently are:
-drink coffee about 2-3h after waking up. I notice i sometimes don t even need coffee by then, i drink it more for taste
-taking short 20 min breaks and lying in bed during the day. I did not know the ultradian rhytm thing, thanks for telling me the science between that. (Also i know lying in bed is not doable for most people who work from the office)
-putting ice on my face when i wake up to help me wake up faster
-trying to actually fall asleep by 0, and being in bed by 11, and cutting out any screen time after 11.
-drinking max 2 shots of coffee per day and none after 12.
-also i tried nicotins spray for the apetite supressant effects and it works. Seems like nicotine by itself is pretty useful, if you don t take it with tobacco

I am Greek, I was born in Greece and I've lived here my whole life, I am currently 28 years old. The thing about the "blue zone" stuff is, a lot of videos make it seem like it's a utopia where everyone is healthy and athletic and lives a good life. Not saying you said those things, I am just saying that's the general message that gets across from a lot of videos and that couldn't be further from the truth. About a quarter of our population is classified as "obese" and when Greece is put in worldwide news, it's usually for something bad.
Everyone is stressed, drinks a lot of coffee (not the good kind), we abuse food delivery services, we drink alcohol and smoking is still extremely popular (I am one of the two people in my group of friends that doesn't smoke). As for the religious stuff, I am in the minority since I don't follow any of that, because I don't need to, so I can't comment on that part.
All that considered, I will say one thing. It's extremely easy to have a "healthy" diet, should you choose to. There's no need to search for "healthy markets", I can go to any supermarket in Athens and buy stuff that in America you'd only find in specialized stores. To answer your question, what made the biggest difference for me to start working out and looking after my health is when I realised at 26 years of age that I am surrounded by family with weak hearts and a bunch of other health issues and I wish I'd started sooner but it's a marathon, not a sprint. Like a legend once said, we're all gonna make it brahs.

    • @mediterraneanworld

I also live in the Blue Zone, one of the other things is we have portion control, many more meals at home and served often in courses where food is already plated and not large portions as we will follow with another plate, due to the longer time we spend at table and in between courses we actually get full over time rather than the case where you begin plowing through a big plate of food or eating "family style" and eating too much before your body tells you that's enough. We all do not consume a lot of sweetened beverages - although I am partial to frappes but only on the beach. What else, hmmm - the smoking while problematic is diminishing over time. I would say the big new danger in blue zones is the impacts since the economic crisis and a level of stress that really did not exist before.

My diet is 80% meat and then some grains and veggies. I'm allergic to most vegetables and my body runs optimally like this without the need to run to the loo every hour. Took me a while to figure out, because I was trying to follow "healthy diets". Longevity is yet to be seen, but the amount of years spent sitting on the toilet has been greatly reduced for sure. Everyone should see what's good and whats bad for them and make their own conclusions. Good vid.

I have been lucky to have lived and worked in many parts of this vast world whilst trying, and often failing to remain healthy through fitness, diet and social interaction. Really great video Joe, thoroughly enjoyed it. Biggest change for me is my drinking habits. Definitely are bigger drinkers out there but I'll still drink at least a few times a week with one of them most likely being pretty heavy. Getting to the age where I start to feel it for the next few days and definitely enjoy the weeks and weekends where there is no drinking involved because of this. Started to cut down slowly and am realising how much of my social life is built around it, and the perks of not drinking vs the health drawbacks of not seeing my friends as much is an interesting point. Think i'm going to have to give myself a kick up the arse and use more willpower to not drink when I'm out with them, rather than forgoing socialising. Anyway, great vid!

i feel like the emotional factor of food is also important, having been depressed for a long time i tried so many things. even the "perfect" vegan diet counting all macros and nutrients. but the stress of being so strict with my diet made me gain weight even more. and now i am gradually losing weight, and if i want to eat a frozen pizza (baked in the oven of course, just pointing out the crappy grocery store pizza's) i'll do it, if i want two of them, i 'll eat them. if i want a few beers, i'll drink them etc. for me it feels people in the fitness industry people are so obsessed with statistics and plans while actually "feeling" what your body needs is so much more important. even when those needs are not healthy in theory.

I love this series. I think something that gets lost in the fitness community is 'the purpose of life' or 'what truly matters.' It is very easy in this industry (and other industries for that matter) to get hyper fixated on one aspect of life, which is appearance/physique. It is true that improving how you look will definitely improve your life and how you feel about yourself. However, like this series is illustrating, there a bunch of other aspects of life that are equally important to put effort in to, if we care about actually 'feeling good.' And, of course, if we neglect these other aspects, overall we will feel worse. And if you initially got into fitness to feel better about yourself and to feel better in general, but are now feeling worse, ultimately what is the point? You are now someone who is feeling bad but is aesthetic. I think your series and channel does a great job of highlighting not only the importance of fitness, but other aspects of life too.

I really enjoyed this video mate not to say I don't enjoy your other ones lol But truly great info here, and really liked the format of everything and love the humor you add to your videos. Keep up the great work and don't feel like you have to keep pushing out content like a lot of these other content creators.

hello Joe, do you intend to put Rio de Janeiro on your travel radar? its vibe strongly matches this city of generous nature, unique culture, warm people, passionate about outdoor life and parties. Have you ever heard of açaí?

Love the video Joey, for me.. also a guy trying to gain muscle and lose some body fat, changing my diet was key, over time I’ve educated myself about what I should be eating and made adjustments to my diet in ways that work for me. It’s certainly not perfect and I do still enjoy some “junk” on most day even if it’s a chocolate bar or cereal instead of a PB bagel (stolen from you) but I’m not trying to be on stage. I do struggle with tracking and obsess a little over protein goal but I just do my best everyday. Again I sometimes take my eye off at weekends.. I think if everyone made small changes over a period of time it makes a difference, it doesn’t have to be extreme or cold Turkey. Just improvements that can be stuck to.. consistency is key.

Good video. I learnt that blue zones exist. I like experimenting with my diet to see how
I cutting out food groups and introducing meals or fasting. This has reduced inflammation, improved body composition, helped with focus and recently helped with emotional well-being. Food is medicine and sugar/flour/vegetable oils aren’t medicine.

lol flour is food, it's literally one of the oldest foods humans have consumed - it's in the Bible and everything.

@@helpfulcommenter Thanks yeah, more like not medicine - I like to eat food that heal me and from what I've learnt from my experience is that these western foods make life worse by causing inflamation and then disease.
