    As a 27 year old, even though I am still really young, I must say to anyone younger out there that is struggling, you get more resilient as time goes on. When you come across something difficult the first time, it feels like the end of the world but the second or third time you come across it, you can handle it better. Things don't get 'easier', you just get tougher.

    • @alexsanoff585
      @alexsanoff585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am 25 and completely agree with you. Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about this as well, I wonder if you are familiar with him? To me it seems like things might actually get tougher the older we get, as we become aware of how many doors there are for us to open if we please, and we step away from our parents wing. However, if we keep marching, and experiencing, we become much more courageous and resilient, and become more aware of how tough we really are.

    My thoughts on this: It's a combination of your genetics, early childhood, late childhood, and what you do now. (From "The Happiness Hypothesis")
    Everybody has a genetically predetemined tendency to either "go forward" or withdraw. Ie some people will feel an urge to go up and deliver a speech, or tell a joke, whilst other people's urges are to stay withdrawn. Not much you can do about this from a genetic perspective. Your early childhood is the other major factor, from my research. If a child is hugged a lot, and shown a lot of love, they worry less. If the parents worry less, then they worry less. These are extremely strong indicators, and can't be changed too much.
    Not so big a point, but a major adversity in the late teens/early twenties has shown to increase resilience in people (and likely therefore worrying). Read somewhere that it's like it gives you antibodies to deal with things in the future. I'm talking death of a family member, moving to an unknown country, war etc.
    What you do now: As the other factors are pretty uncontrollable for most of us, it's pretty much down to what we do now, and the main things are, IMO:
    Having a purpose --- Simon Sinek had a video about the effect of purpose on worrying and general negative mind wandering. I can't give any more evidence, but I've seen it first hand. Without a project I'm working on, or just something I love to do and have planned for the future (that I enjoy), I default to worrying. This was completely underappreciated by myself, but once you look for it you notice how big this is.
    Meditation --- If you haven't meditated, please try it ASAP, or at least read testimonials as to what people have done with it. It's not spirituality, it's simple brain training. First, you focus on the breath, and that simply trains your brain to keep attention on one thing (reducing mind wandering), and allowing you to silence your mind. There's more to it, but this is the basics of it. I highly recommend looking at testimonials on reddit r/themindilluminated and r/meditation. It truly changes your mind. Also, if you take nothing else out of this comment, please listen to Naval Ravikant on the Joe Rogan podcast - it's incredible, and does a deep dive on the billionaire's thoughts on happiness, which are incredible and come from such an intelligent mind. I personally follow "The Mind Illuminated" book.
    A good social circle, exercise, eating good food, having a routine --- Waking up at different times during the day, eating bad food and not exercising seem like they won't affect it as they're not the issues. Ie if you're worrying about a bill you've got to pay in a week's time, intuitively it doesn't matter what you eat or how you sleep. But if you sleep at different times each day, your hormones are thrown completely out of whack, and this is a big reason why you worry and have general negative thoughts, feel bad etc. Having a good social circle is also one of the main pillars of not only happiness, but health (it's the strongest indicator for how long people live. Rough example: someone with a good social circle that eats bad food will likely live longer than someone who doesn't have this but eats healthily). I implore you, if you have social anxiety, or haven't connected with friends for a while, please do. It's not just that you'll likely be happier by doing it, but if your social skills fade by you not using them, you'll have a worse time next time and then be even less likely to socialise, and further down the hole you go.
    Other things, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, SSRIs are also extremely effective for more worse off people.
    Also, look into "determinism". It's too hard to explain on this level, but basically (this is still debated) everything is predetermined, and everyone's choices are already preset. Ie when you were born, all of the particles in the world were flying in certain directions with certain speeds (everyone's brains included), and there's nothing that can change it. "You" can, but you're part of the world - your brain, body, environment are all going to age in a certain, preset way, that was started at the Big Bang. There's no other way that the world could've unravelled aside from you sitting here, reading this right now, with your hair in a certain way and you having the exact same number of atoms in your body. It's hard to grasp, so I implore you to research it more, but just assuming it for one second: This means that all murders are predetermined, all crimes, and all bad actions. We can't impose this view onto the justice system, as we need the deterrent (even though by this logic even punishing somebody like Hitler would be unjust), but we can think of it in social contexts: Every nasty comment that was said to you was always going to be said, and it's up to you how to respond to it. Respond to it with kindness, or explain to them why it's stupid and self-destructive to say hateful things, but most importantly remember that it's not technically their choice to say it, and it's just a product of their upbringing and how they've been socially trained. Ie if they were teased, or in an aggressive social circle growing up, they'll be socially trained to be defensive and respond aggressively. Think of a dog that's been mistreated by it's past owners, and now growls at everyone. On the flip side, if someone comes from a loving family, and had great mates all of their life, they will do nothing but be nice to you, as that's how they've been trained.
    As a final note to this long comment, most of the changes you make will be big jumps, not through willpower (watch "What I've Learned"'s video on willpower - it's less powerful than we think). So instead of saying "I'll try and go out and see people once a day", join a football team, or a jujitsu club. These major choices are the pillars of what you do, not trying to make something a habit.
    My best resources for researching this have been Naval Ravikant's podcast, The Happiness Hypothesis, thinking deeply about how evolution affects people socially, understanding determinism and how a person's childhood defines their personality, the "What I've Learned" youtube channel, The Obstacle is the Way, Cliff Weitzman on the Ali Abdaal podcast, the Four Hour Workweek, How to Win Friends and Influence People, and funnily enough Casey Neistat (there's a "guide to life" compilation of him on TH-cam somewhere). Hope at least one person reads this haha.
    Cheers!

    I don’t often comment on videos but this one hit different! Thanks Joe for making this video. You touched a lot of people and definitely me! I struggle with worry almost everyday and I find it hard to submit myself but this video just helped even more. I also like how you add some comedic elements and jokes in even with a serious topic as such, it really helps lighten the mood! Thanks and keep up your great work!

    Honestly, before watching this video I was stressing out about A-level results day which is on the 13th; watching this really cool down my nerves for the time being. I don’t know how to say it but this video really really helped, just made me think that I’m overthinking the day way too much. But I just wanna say thanks, one of the best youtubers on this platform, one again a huge thanks for this video. 😊

    Been watching your videos the last week or so mate, honestly inspired me to do something about my mental health. I used to workout most days, then got a few injuries and just lost the taste for it. But watching your recipe videos has made me want to recapture my former self. Honestly been a life saver I was at rock bottom when I started your videos have been for a while, now while I know early days I’m in week 2 of my eating plan( Cheat meal on a Sunday) and hopefully by Saturday be working out again alongside it!

    This is definitely correct, im currently 21. And i dont have a license, i have been worrying alot that i might fail the test for yrs now, and its been holding me back, im genuinely scared of failure, and being as old as i am without a license just makes the worry worse, but life has definitely gotten hard when i hit 16 i lost a lot of good friends, my childhood friend that past away, relationships, very bad family problems, parents divorcing, so it hasn’t been easy these last couple years but i know that isnt a excuse, i just wish i can just stop worrying and actually take action to change my life.

    Hm. Thank you for this. I was quite reluctant to click at first. I struggle with anxiety, and in my research on the subject I have watched so many videos, read so many articles and gotten so much "advice" that really boils down to "you're worried? lol, just stop". It gets exhausting. But I took the chance, and I'm actually feeling a little inspired. This video has both substance and compassion, which means a lot to me. So, thanks again!

    This video seriously resonated with me mate..can't honestly describe how I feel having watched it. I'm 24, Irish but living in Canada, finished Uni, have a job - doing all the shit I'm 'meant to do'. And yet I still find myself wanting, looking too far ahead, living in my own head and never the here and now. In more recent years i had came to the conclusion that I am who I am, I'll never be somebody who can just ride the wave, never be somebody who thinks 'it'll just work out'. I question my every step, I question everyone and everything around me, but for what? I've gained nothing other than a heavy burden of feeling engulfed in my own mind, my own thoughts, my own head. To see you break this all down, and to see you offer insights and tips as to how to combat this has to be totally honest changed my life. I'm not who I have been for so long, I'm a person living right this second with the opportunity to grab life by the balls. Thank you and much respect to you

    • @z1lla4
      @z1lla4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean I would assume a psychologist is mainly for the serious mental illness. Usually people go to therapist and one of the reasons for a therapist is so you can talk about every single one of your problems, sad thing is that these people get paid to care and offer advice. Someone people just want someone to listen a psychologist might just be like, "we'll prescribe you Xanax, Adderall, antidepressants".

    that sums up my life...i try to fight it like crazy but roughly every two - three years something horrible out of my control happens to me most of the time ruining all of my progressions so far.
    i was pierced through the stomach when attacked by a random dude on the street. i wasnt able to move for three month straight and was stuck in a wheelchair for that time.
    a few years later i had a bike accident. my wheel suddenly blocked and i fell down a hill... my ribs pierced my spleen and i iternally bled to death but luckily got revived in the hospital. couldnt walk anymore after that becausr they had to cut my entire abs.
    had a bit of time and started gymnastics and actually got quite fit again... then i had an accident due to a failure in a safety mat i landed on. ripped all my ligaments and broke a few bones.
    had to relearn walking again.
    this cycle continued my entire life... lately i suddenly couldnt walk for a year straight because of tendon inflammation in my feet soles.... absolutly ridiculous pain basically from nothing.
    This shit rips me out of my routine every fucking time. pain up to a point where i simply have to stop. After recovering i started going to the gym again just to get a dic prolapse a few weeks later.
    I know exactl ywhat i'm doing in sports and i'm super fucking careful it's really just bad luck every time.
    the only thing i got from it is learning to stand up fast and work back up again. but i honestly cant get up fast enough than it drags me down again.
    this level of shit happens out of nowhere to me. and i',m a really careful person already as i value my life alot. i stopped taking risks by now as i'm too afraid of the consequences. this shit ruined my life so much. if all that BS did not happen to me i would be in a totally different place and state of life nowadays
