Always........ Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, before replacing the blades. The lawnmower could start up, while you are cranking on the bolts.
How do you hold firm the flat headed bolt when when trying to turn a firmly held nut? I've loosened the nut but cannot hold the bolt to remove the nut.
pretty good vid Greg. Couple of things though, I have found over the past 40 years it is always better ( at least on Rover mowers ) to always use 4 throwing blades for a cleaner cut and better throwing. Second, what breed of mower is that you have. Have not seen one with a blade disc with a solid blade mounted above it on the engine shaft before. Have a good one mate, it's beer o'clock.
Mopar Maniac 64 it's a masport president series I'm thinking 4000 series looks like mine .mine 8 yr old now never had problem apart from just recently I changed the throttle lever $20 and done it myself easy . awesome quality and cut .
Just curious why you wouldn't use the brand new bolts, etc that come with the blades? Also, it should be mentioned you should disconnect the spark plug if you don't want to lose your arm.
@@phillipsmith6756 It's a big thing when hand proping aircraft. You go to lengths to make sure there is no possiblility of ignition when turning the prop by hand. A mower blade would be no different.
Exactly...The new Victa blades came with new Victa bolts that don't fit into the "D" shaped Masport holes so he couldn't swap them so he was forced to reuse the dangerous old bolts
Greg, When changing mower blades you should ALWAYS install NEW bolts as well. Never use the old bolts as they weaken with age and can snap causing the blade to go in all directions possibly causing serious injury.
Thank you so much for this video, I had no idea how to start taking this off and I was trying to take the blades off without taking the center bolt out and as you can well imagine that was impossible....cheers...
I thought that those blades were Supposed to be relatively snug but not tight so when you hit something the blade will defect and they centrifugal force will straighten them out again?
Do you need different sized spanners for different mowers? Should I turn the fuel off before turning my mower over? Will fuel run out of the filler cap when I tip my mower over? How do I stop the blade plate from spinning when I undo that middle bolt? What do I do if the threads on the bolts holding the blades on are damaged and I cant get them off? Will my mower start like normal when I tip it back over? Is there anything else I need to buy. How much do you charge to just come and do it for me?
👍👍 The bend in the blades is also for when run over (accidentally) a rock wood, the blade will ‘fold’, as the bolts and assembly should allow them to do, give way rather than damage, then the folded bit stops it, and can be used to tap the blade back into alignment.
Installed these on a riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
G'day Greg.............. Might be a good idea to tell people to remove the sparkplug and move it away from the mower before doing this. If, like me,they can't work out how to do this without coming here, they may be the sort that doesn't turn the mower off. In this litigious world of ours they could sue you for the fingers they lose.
The wavy washer should be fitted between the blade and the circular plate. This allows the blades to swing away on impact. There should also be a washer between the centre plate and the nut.
On Rover, MTD, Toro etc the wave washer does fit between the blade carrier and blade; MASPORTS are different, the wave washer is fitted under the head of the bolt NOT between the blade carrier and blade. In any case it must be remembered this man has fitted Victa Mulch blades to a Masport;the pressed section of the blade does not match the recess in the blade carrier.... Victa use a "belleville" convex washer under the nut; different again.
Have just changed the blades on my Morrison with quad blades and assembled them with new bolts and washers as supplied with the blades but they seem very stiff to move, how tight or loose should they be?

G,day Greg, I'm in WA working for a company gardening, new here from UK 😮 .thanks for the video, I thought the blades had a kick back system on my Briggs n stratton 725 ex 🤔 but the blades seem ridged ,is this correct
My mower is a Ryobi 175cc 4-stroke with a Subaru engine. I saw on another TH-cam video that if you put a plastic bag under the fuel cap it will stop or limit fuel dripping out when you turn the mower on its side. That worked pretty well. HOWEVER, after I had taken the disk and blades off it took me about half an hour to get back to the mower. I had left it on its side. Quite a lot maybe 50 mls of sump oil had drained through the air filter onto the ground. Surprisingly the mower started ok and I ran it for about 5 minutes. Can I expect problems down the track after this DIY failure that I can add to my list?
Thank you. I’ve just come back from a mates house who knows nothing about mowers and said his didn’t work anymore… it had no oil or petrol in it 😂 it’s been sitting there for so long, the blades have started to rust pretty bad. This will be my next job.
It's always a good idea to pull the spark plug boot out before working on a lawn mower. I recently had to get a new ignition coil. Now the blade's bent. That's what happens when you hit bricks or roots. What kind of mower is this one? I'm not familar with this kind of blade. Shouldn't you use some kind of wedge to keep the blade in place? It always looks so easy when someone else is doing the work.
Thank you so much... i've never changed a set of lawn mower blades in my life and i'm 50 years old and i'm a hands on person in which I do ";if" i can any home handy mans jobs, anything i can manage on car maintenance repairs this video was a big help ,once again a big thankyou
1 problem with this greg.... if you tip it over in any way, the oil will get into the cylinder and when u start it again it will smoke a sheeeet load for like 10mins
Hey Greg, my whole blade plate is loose, when the mower cranks it makes a banging sound, is it as simple as tightening the blade plate or has something sinister occurred?
ten years later it is still a brillant video mate , no bullshit or BLah BLah , easy and to the point , thanks Greg
Your a bloody legend mate.
I never thought of doing that way. Just tried it……So simple….No more trips to the mower shop for me 😎👍
Good stuff mate I’ve never changed blades before that cleared it all up thanks Greg.🤙🤟🤟
Always........ Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, before replacing the blades. The lawnmower could start up, while you are cranking on the bolts.
Thanks brah.
Mine were so damaged I couldn't use them as a reference for which way to install the replacements.
Thank you Greg - got my blades off then back on 🤙🤙🤙 you video saved me!!
Thank you. Bloody easy! All ya gotta do is have a go at it.
How do you hold firm the flat headed bolt when when trying to turn a firmly held nut? I've loosened the nut but cannot hold the bolt to remove the nut.
Good on you Greg, that's the way, again thanks heaps
Thanks Greg
Thanks for sharing mate
Greg, you are just a true blue aussie legend. Keep up the good work.

How can a mower just start of its own accord (or its own a cord as the case may be)?

Nylon nuts are single use only. Must be replaced.
All good Greg except cant hold plate firm to remove nut - tried a few holding and jaming of the plate but it refuses to budge -
It's always good if you use the correct blades & bolt set when making a how to video

@ShaneHm2 depends on how many blades your mower has, but somewhere around $10 to $20
Thanks Greg.
Thankyou Sir
For some models, lay it on its side with the carbie facing up so you don't get oil all through the carbie
Why do my machine wobble a bit? I have tried to put back the blades the way it was exactly.
i hope you were turning it the right way, they go the opposite way, you can always spray some WD40 on it to help loosen it :)

dont think so
nah she'll be right
@@joanpetervincent6175 Yes they do, the vibration and moist environment of the lawn clippings weakens them. They can snap.

My new idea make 7 hp push mower strongest or riding mower 10 hp

The first thing you do is disconnect the spark plug !!!
and then you tip the mower in the correct direction to not stuff the engine up.
Apart from these 2 main important things, you almost got there!
use the force

i couldn't be bothered, i know i should but rarely do :)
Great job Gregg. Need to unplug the spark plug while working on the lawnmower
Scott in Tehachapi.
My thoughts first exactly!
3rd video I've seen that doesn't tell you what size spanner/socket to use
You really should use that chipper chute for once
@FatGuyWithAKatana no tape, just the bolts, but if you wanted to put some on you could l suppose

Before anything, please for SAFETY reasons Disconnect the spark plug cap wire that connects to the top of the spark plug. Thank you
Warning ,nylon washer nuts are single use only.
That's why they are supplied with the blade set.
Latest mug to benefit from some experienced advice. Thanks Greg.

Great Video, good presenting... I wanted to know how to do this ... I will subscribe! Thanks for this video!
It really is as easy as you make it look omg 😱 you just saved me $60+ with this video Thankyou so much
Take out spark plug first, don't want to accidently start that baby up when trying to remove the bolts.
I always tryed taking the blades off with them attached to the mower and failed. This helps so much
If I tilt the mower on its side will it effect the engine oil …. Will it flood the cubberator or flood something else ? From a novice

Yeah this is wrong. When the bolts are tightened the blades should still be able to move if they hit anything hard.
the blades you put on your 19" Masport mower looked like they were 18" Victa blades?
Taking the blade off the plate is very hard with my mower as they use the allen key to open.
Greg, thank you for your video. It was very helpful.
FFS.......Disconnect the spark plug first
hi Greg i have a 4 stroke mower will the oil and petrol be ok if i tip mower back like that
Bro why didn't you use the new hardware that come with the blades
The top mulcher blade has come off on mine how do you get that out?

Remove spark plug lead first!
Even the manual warns user to do this. why was it left out of an instructional video - possibly very dangerous.
@TheNakedWombat i'll make a video on that :)
the plucking at the end was the best. I was waiting for the "and there ya have it!"
