Steve - Help me please.... Here in NZ, a lot of our mowers are quad blades on a disc, rather than these long twin blades I see in your video.
I have a bet going with someone..... If the disc is put back on upside down, but the blades still end up being correct with Grass Side Down, could that still cause these issues you mention of an upside down blade? Broken Flywheel, bent shaft etc? Theres a few beers riding on this so would love to know your answer.

Steve, I have to say, I sooooo appreciate your video on this! My husband was the one who always took care of the lawn mowing and maintenance on our Grasshopper rider mower. He is a brain cancer patient who no longer can communicate or think things through. Yesterday I changed the oil, oil filter and sharpened the blades (by watching TH-cam videos of course). But once I had the blades installed I questioned myself if I had them on correctly. Your video was so helpful. I felt you were right there coaching me along the way! I am going to use allll of your videos on small engine repairs/maintenance from now on! You give me the confidence that I can do it myself! Thank you and God bless you

So glad I watched this. I'm female, but I've done a lot of the outside stuff for years. Last time I "cut" the grass, I realized the grass is just being ripped apart, not cut. I'm ordering a new blade for it, as the old one is going on 20 years. Yes, I know it should have been changed a long time ago. This is a great video, thank you for this!

A quick suggestion: if you are removing the blade to sharpen it (and presumably going to reinstall it on the mower), mark the "grass side" with a shot of spray paint.
When you reinstall the blade, you will know to look for the spray paint mark. Can't muck that up.

Several years ago I put my lawnmower blade on upside down. I cut my yard twice before I figured out my mistake. After putting the blade on correctly, I went in the house and announced to my girlfriend that I had made a groundbreaking discovery about how to keep my lawnmower blade sharp indefinitely by simply installing it upside down. She looked a little perplexed at first and then she asked "do you think that makes it sharpen itself?" Ha ha. I knew right then that she was the girl for me!

Hi Steve, love your videos. It's nice to see a fellow Canadian eh! Worked at a small engine shop in Winnipeg. Just wanted to mention that you can also use an impact wrench (the easiest way), just be sure not to over tighten it when putting it back on. If someone doesn't have an impact wrench then a breaker bar can also be used to take the nut off. As a former small engine repairman I can tell you that you're dead on with your videos and have learned some new things too that I didn't know. Keep up the great work!

Steve, you're awesome! Question for you.... I have a Husqvarna zero turn with three blades. I notice that when I mow it seems to leave a strip of grass that is higher that the rest of the cut grass. Do multiple blade mowers have to be synched so that there is no space where two blade are not cutting efficiently? Probably a dumb question considering how fast they are all spinning...

6:00 Pro tip: if the bolt is hard to turn, setting the end of the wrench close to the blade so that you can crab both with a single hand is a good way to get more force to the wrench. Humans have suprisingly good gripping force and you can apply really high force this way - the end of the wrench must be so that when you close your fist, the end of the wrench must move to the position where it loosens the bolt.

⁉Hi! How can we know which is the right way when both sides look and have been sharpened by previous users not knowing what they were doing? I've noticed this blade is concave towards the center and have the country of manufacturing printed on one side. Unfortunately for my case, the "wing" method doesn't work because either way there's a wing going towards the sky. Thank you! 🙂

I don't know why but I assumed the blade would turn clockwise when it was on right. I removed the two blades from my Poulan riding mower but didn't pay attention to how they came off and I do believe from the way the grass looks after cutting it the blades are on backwards. I'll be changing this very soon. My other problem was I had a Bud Light, I don't think what you had is even available here, I'm sure that was the start of my problems, thanks for the tip's Steve.

Take your right hand and make a fist then point your thumb at the nut or bolt and your curled fingers show which way to turn it to put it back on. Point thumb away from the nut or bolt and your curled fingers show which way to turn it to remove it. Has come in handy when working upside down and sideways. Have a great day!

Awesome video as usual Steve. I know of the double wrench trick, I call it the knuckle buster however. Sometimes the wrench that you are gripping (the one closest to yourself ) let's say, can actually slip to one side or the other and actually swings back towards, in this case, the blade and OUCH. How about a 1/2 inch drive ratchet or breaker bar with a 6 POINT socket or even a 3/8 drive impact driver. Crucial is the 6 point socket....less likely to strip or slip on you. Bill from SSM On. Great video as always, easiest thing to remember is the mulching bent tip has to face upwards.
Its surprising that a large proportion of owners never sharpen their blades and these lawnmowers are quite forgiving and keep cutting with the dullest blade. So even a blade put on backwards owners are likely not to realize it.
For the rest of us keep the blade sharp, machine works less and you get a better job.
Well done on the video, a refresher course for us old timers and a lesson for those sharpening blades for the first time.

I enjoy some of your older videos because they are so laid back and fun. Another trick for removing stubborn bolts is to spray a little WD-40 on it, drink a few beers, come back and tap it loose with a wrench and a hammer. If you drink too many beers you might forget all about it and it's even easier to remove the next day. ;)

Steve, also very important for the blade being on correctly....the fin or turned up part of the blade must be up to pull the grass up through the wind action by the fin. The grass must be pulled up by the wind for the blade to cut the grass. If the grass is lying down, the blade won’t cut. There’s actually aerodynamics in grass cutting. The fin on the blade and the enclosed cowling of the lawnmower all play a part in a “vacuum” pulling up the grass blades for the lawnmower blade to cut the grass.

These videos are fantastic , for the novice or seasoned do it yourself repairer , there is always something to learn . One thing I haven’t seen recommended is the use of antisieze on nuts & bolts , I made a pact to myself years ago that anytime I pull anything apart & I know it’s highly likely I’ll have to do it again , a smear of antisieze can save a whole lot of swearing & cursing at frozen or corroded bolts . These days I even do it to brand new fittings like blade bolts to ensure it doesn’t become a pain in the arse when it come time to replace .

Little divits or dimples surrounding the shaft meant to prevent the blade slipping over the shaft. You can see they were sheered off. My question, does this make the mower unsafe? Every time I take my blade/blades off (riding or push) I clean the bolt and apply a very light coat of grease to it. It makes getting that bolt out easy every time. If you got a used mower from someone often those bolts are really stuck. WD or another penetrating lubricant a day before trying to hard can really help. 👍

You can also use a c-clamp or vice grips on the lip of mower deck so the blade will catch on that and you can turn the bolt without having to hold the blade. I used a vice grips and then used a socket wrench to get the bolt off mine. But I had to repeatedly tap the handle of the socket wrench with a hammer to get enough force to loosen the bolt.

I had some yahoo DIY shop sharpen my mower blade last year. After a few months of use I noticed it didn't seem to cut like it used to. It seemed to be crappier. My mower is over 10 years old now, I just figured it was old age. It also kept stalling a lot on tall grass. The season turned to winter and it didn't get used. Used it more this summer and it still seemed rough.
Last week when I flipped my mower over to try hosing the deck off on the bottom, I thought the blade was looking too close to the deck, and there was scratch rings on the metal. I thought something seemed weird. I looked online, and I noticed the smooth part of the blade where the washer sits inside the channel of the blade was not like that on mine, the channel was facing upwards. I said holy shit, no wonder! The wing is also facing down, and this explains the weird crop-circle style swirling marks that was left on my lawn.
I also learned that you are not to use a mulching blade when you are bagging it, as it chokes off the mower and does not spin fast enough to toss the grass into the bag, just sits it under the mower. It's only meant when you do side discharge. I bought a straight blade to remedy this issue since I bag it a lot.
I will remove it and buy a new blade. I will never again have anyone else touch my tools. I will learn to DIY. Also on my mower, new blades are only $10-$12 because it is an old model so it is not expensive at all to just buy a new blade when it gets dull. My lawn edger blades cost $9 themselves and when those are dull you toss them out too.

You could also use a sharpie to mark the bottom side of the blade. My blade was stamped bottom but i still marked it with a sharpie "bottom".

watched and liked a couple of your videos. if installing blades on riding mower, does it matter how you orientate the blades? should they be inline, at a 45 degree angle or does it not matter? ty

Thanks for this helpful video. I looked at the blade I recently purchased. Indeed, it has “grass side” stamped on one side of the blade. I had not noticed until I saw this video. Now I am more confident in changing the mower blade. I also learned from one of your other videos that prior to turning the mover on its side, the starter grip should be pulled to the point of greatest resistance to prevent oil from seeping behind the piston resulting in hydrolock.

Great common sense tips shown here. Most tool guys have an impact wrench either battery or air powered. Using one of these wrenches is a great knuckle saver but can be hard on the wrist if not gripped correctly .However the average home owner probably does not have one of these tools. That is where the double wrench tip would be handy. One could also use an offset wrench which are usually a longer length wrench than a standard wrench to achieve the same results.

Thanks. Like a nit wit I put my blades on upside down on a one year old zero turn. I screwed up two spindles by doing this. I wound up replacing all three spindles just in case . It was a very expensive lesson. But how I did it was the mower was in the air I took the blade off and laid it face down and when I reinstalled the new ones I didn't flip it over I just went straight up. I'm usually not this dumb but I sure was this time.
Another way to explain how to install is sharp side up. If you can see The Cutting Edge from the bottom it's on incorrectly.

Hi Steve, great video. I was hoping for some advice, I have a 5 year old 22 in Toro mower and one month ago the trailing shield got caught under the blade and destroyed. I bought a OEM replacement and it got destroyed as well after 5 minutes of use. As you know , when you mow there are times you have to back up the mower to turn, redo areas that are missed, etc. That is when the shield gets caught underneath the mower. Any advice on how to prevent the shield from getting destroyed? Thanks

Good...kinda long video, answer comes basically at 9 min into video, turn blade counter-clockwise, sharp side is doing the cutting then.

I put a wood block in the blade channel and hold it in place with my foot. I have seen others use a c clamp with a block of wood on the outside. Then I use a socket wrench to undo the blade.

I found that working on a lawn mower on a bench is a really good way to go. But always check and double check that you personally pulled the sparkplug off, So not a mechanic , but the bend up at the tip is to throw the grass up. So correct me if wrong.. the bend up will be towards the lawnmower deck and away from grass. Great video. Btw I just use a medium size socket wrench..about 12 inches ..more leverage. .

    • @MrWolfSnack

I would never use an impact wrench on a lawnmower. Too easy to damage the engine if it catches and ruin the bolt as well. WD-40 and a little bit of waiting and it will come off. No need to use power tools.
