Hi there, you may have answered this before. Is this your yard? If so, what is the type of grass shown at 0:14? Do you have to trim it or is it free-growing? Thanks! And thanks for the video. #HomeDepot makes it hard to get a blade replaced there.
Nice video, good info, Only additional information I could recommend is the tilt the mower so the carburetor is up, on some models to crank case oil can work its way through the carburetor and onto the driveway
Guys here's an extra precaution tip that I hear many others mention! When tilting your lawn mower to the side PLEASE make sure the carb and air filter are facing UP if you don't do this the oil could potentially run into the carburetor and the air filter and both items would need to be cleaned or possibly replaced! So please do this for safety and prevention of extra work! Hope was helpful :)
@@CreamOfBeats it ain’t your fault honestly. This dude in the video should’ve explained it. It happened to me last summer and the only reason why I knew it was wrong is cause my dad yelled at me for it lol
Thank you for making this video. I did not know anything about lawnmowers, however I successfully changed the blade after your explanations. Thank you very much.
Thank you for this video! You gave great details that makes me feel confident to do this myself because it's time to change my blade. GOD bless you for this.
Only thing I would say is the blade bolt should be tightened to spec. Only way to do this is with a torque wrench. If you just put elbow grease into it, this will keep it from falling off, but it might be too tight and hinder motor performance. Typically bolts in this style of mower need to be tightened to between 40 and 50 ft/lbs. Your manual should have the exact spec in it.
Your video is so easy to follow. Very clear details. Never thought I would be changing the blade's by myself. Now I also know the easiest way to clean all the dried caked up grass underneath. Thank you very much.
Great video. Good trick with plastic bag for fuel. I always run the mower out of gas completely before changing the blade and oil but the bag idea is smart
I have had the same blades on my John Deere since I bought it in 2006. I sharpen and balance them twice a year and they are in perfect condition. No need to buy blades every year!
Excellent video. I normally change the blade at the start of the season. The lawn mower has no gas in it (store it over winter that way). I remove the oil first (since i replace the oil at the start of the season); replace the blade, add oil and gas and start the fun. That way i don't worry about gas or oil spillage.
another good video. i used to bring blades in but its actually relaxing to sharpen by hand if you have a couple good tools (sharp pal , any tool at 30 degrees). the key is to follow the angle . If you mow often swap out blades after 10-12 cuts, makes a difference . Torque wrench , even a cheap one , is nice because it gives you leverage
Good video, if you really want to spend a few extra dollars there is a lawn mower blade removal tool that clamps onto the side of the mower deck and prevents the blade from turning. Also, you can tip the lawn mower the other direction so the gas tank is not facing the ground.
Love the clamp and vise idea. Was using wood block before. Have an Ego mower which helps with the gas part. Really like the Dremel blade sharpening kit. Use it all the time. Great video 👍
Wood blocks can actually damage the angle of the mower blades because they bite into the wood and can warp as you apply force to loosen the bolt. The vice grips are a great idea. I have an atlas blade removal tool that cost about $10 that is the same concept.
Enjoyed watching and learning from your videos. I have also learned, keeping your exhaust on top when you roll the mower keep oil out of the muffler. Would give you a double thumbs up if available for many of your videos.
Thank you for this excellent video. It was direct, simple, and complete. I know what kind of attention it takes to make it so clean. Again much thanks!
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
I’ve always sharpened the blades myself. However the important thing along with the cutting edge is to balance the blade with a balance cone. I always keep several sharp blades on hand for the mowing season which I sharpen in the winter.
What are usually do is I go to ACE hardware and drop it off and they were sharpen the blade for like $10 and it’s like a brand new blade totally worth it
Love the vice grip/ C-clamp tip, definitely will use next time. Had been using a wood block and it always slips. This is one activity I do kind of dread doing with my ZTR mower, have to slide the cutting deck off and it's so heavy, and have 3 blades to deal with. I also put anti seize on the nut which helps to prevent corrosion. Also dielectric grease around the spark plug boot makes taking it off really easy and protects from water.
I don’t have to but I want to give you a “THUMBS UP”. But if your like me I hate to scratch the paint on my mowers deck and my tractors deck. So I place a piece of card board between the painted side and the vice grips. But my new Honda’s mowers blade nut wouldn’t come lose with my 3/8”s breaker bar so I tried my 1/2” breaker bar and still it won’t budge. I honestly thought I was going to snap the bolt off. So I ended up using my 1/2” electric impact wrench and finally it came lose. I was about ready to take it to the place I purchased it at. Someone must have been very strong 💪 the day it was assembled. Now I just use my impact and so I don’t over tighten it I use a torque wrench 🔧 . Thanks I set your video for my 2 adult sons to watch, Cheers
That is a great tip, and I totally agree. This mower has seen a lot of use but that's a great tip to keep the paint looking nice. Thanks for the nice compliment too.
Cool video. I got an attachment for a Dremel that keeps the angle constant and lets me refresh the blades in about 10 mins, but I'm a sharpening nut (one of those) and used to doing this sort of thing. This is also a good time to clean the bottom of your deck!
@@tsyriac Dremel A679-02 Attachment Kit for Sharpening Outdoor Gardening Tools www.amazon.com/dp/B003BIFMK6/ ... If you let your blades get really beat up, this might not be the way to go. If you sharpen every season and don't hit rocks, this works well.
@@tsyriac It's right here. It is a very cool thing. amzn.to/2KsezKv Keep in mind it is more for keeping an edge than a deep sharpening but it can help you keep your mower blade in good shape during the season and it is very inexpensive.

I take mine to a good guy who sharpens them razor sharp. While he is sharpening my blades, I have my spares on mowers...back in operation no down time The gadget from Menards in my area works great and inexpensive.

You forgot two critical steps: 1). You should ALWAYS pull the start cord slowly until you feel that it’s really tough to pull (full resistance). This places the piston at “top dead center” and ensures that both valves are CLOSED! This prevents most of the oil from filling inside the cylinder and creating a “hydro lock” situation next time you want to start it. It also prevents crankcase oil from running out past the exhaust valve and into the muffler, then onto your driveway. It also prevents oil from entering past the intake valve and into the carburetor itself. 2). When tipping the mower on its side, “which” side vs the other side is CRITICAL. Always tip the mower where the carburetor is up and the muffler side is closer to the “down” (the ground) side. Again, this minimizes large amounts of oil running to a side and out onto your driveway, should some oil leak past the closed (or partially closed) valves. Bonus tip: I like the plastic bag in the gas tank trick, but you should wait until the fuel tank is near “empty” before changing the blade. That is all.
