Tiny bit of clarification. Lydia is not dead. Betelgeuse stopped her from committing suicide in that last song. She was gonna jump off the roof because it seems like everyone has moved on from missing her mother. Betelgeuse sees the opportunity to take revenge on her dad. (This is coming from someone who knows the songs but hasn’t seen the play, I could be a little off)
You should had listened to the entirety of Dead Mom. That was just the end of the song. Lydia 's mother was named Emily. Her dad, Charles, isn't only moving on with someone else, but Emily's death was tragic and he didn't want to acknowledge it because it hurt too much. Lydia feels invisible and pushed away because of this, and worried that her mother's memories were fading as a result. Beetlegeuse, who's first name is Lawrence, is a demonic ghost, but an anti hero, who's stuck in our world, where no one can see him. He's lonley and feels invisible, until he meets the Maitlands (Adam and Barbara) and Lydia (who he becomes friends with) saying his name three times in a row summons him and he can wreak havoc. Lydia moved in to the house that the Maitlands died in. She is the only one who can see them. But she wants to move back to her home town and wants to scare her dad into leaving. Lydia is not dead, not a ghost. The Maitlands are dead. Lydia is alive. The Maitands become her surrogate ghost parents.
alex brightman has a weird anatomical thing that makes him be able to do 8 shows a week like that without damaging his voice so if you wanna sound like him be extremely careful (and also probably don't do 8 shows a week yknow)
So Lydia, the goth chick, is an alive human girl, who embraces the idea of death, and because of that, she is able to see and communicate with the dead. Beetlejuice is a ghost demon dude who's powerful and needs to have his name spoken by someone 3 times for his full potential and begin his master plan. (He's also the worlds creepiest ghost with lewd jokes and stuff left and right) That's all I'll say, hope it didn't spoil all too much. (But the person who plays Beetlejuice, aka Alex Brightman, is the voice of fizzeroli from helluva boss)
It's actually hilarious in the show when Barbara says "Look at these jugs!" because Beetlejuice just turns around really fast, then he looks annoyed and stalks off. I think he was hoping she was going to flash him and then got all annoyed that she was actually talking about real jugs.
You should do a video with songs from the percy jackson: the Lightning Thief Musical. They are so good! Especially tree on the hill and my grand plan, Overall, it's a really fun time, really recommend. Also, the guy who was Michael in be more chill (George salazar) is grover in it!
My college did the show just this month. Before, I didn't even know a musical existed, but when I saw the flyers for auditions, I was hyped to see it. I'm not sure how the original cast was like but I did enjoy what I saw at school.
The most mind-blowing thing about anything Beetlejuice is the fact that, despite the musical and movies being called "Beetlejuice", the titular character's name is actually spelled "Betelgeuse".
@@dradel2050it's true. It's how it's spelled in there movie and the Broadway show made a replica of the light up sign in the film, so canonically, yes, that is how his name is spelled. It's also a real star in the galaxy.
To clarify: Beetlejuice - Demon. Trapped in the house due to being technically dead. Invisible to living humans. Adam and Barbara - New homeowners who buy the house and instantly die by falling through a hole in the floor "Ready Set Not Yet" They spend the rest of the show as ghosts. The rest of the show is set 10 years later when the house is sold again Lydia - Alive. Just moved in with her dad and new stepmom. Is able to see BJ due to recently having seen the death of her mother.
without spoiling too much (bc i'd love for you to do another video reacting to more of the musical,) lydia is NOT dead. beetlejuice, adam, and barbara are. you got beetlejuice's character down pretty good but adam and barbara are the newly dead ghosts. lydia is the only living person that can see them because ghosts are strange and unusual and as she says; "i myself am strange and unusual" great video as usual! i'd love for you to react to more broadway :) there's a TON of fantastic shows out there for you to check out
I do want to inform you that there's a beginning to That Beautiful Sound and it's way more chaotic than what you listened to. There's also a beginning to Dead Mom. It gets so crazy.
Yeah the transition from the Original film to the Broadway production did it's thing, Opening Number: The Whole Being dead Thing: A Meta 4th wall number with plenty of wordplay puns and cultural/Broadway references [Rogers/Hammerstein, [Sound of Music etc score writers] Ready, Set. Not Yet: Adam and Barbara's song of Procrastination and aimlessness... Lydia: "Dead Mom": Lydia's power ballad to feeling invisible, missing her mom and being generally depressed and angry at her dad Say my Name: BeetleJuice's attempt to convince Lydia to 'summon' him to 'employ' him to get her dad's attention That Beautiful sound: A celebratory song w/ Lydia And Beetle juice for getting her dad's attention and being 'seen" maybe not the most accurate summary but lol
SPOILER Beetlejuice is a story about found family, Adam and Barbra never got the chance to have a kid due to all the fears of not being ready. Lydia feels abandoned by her family and wishes to get back at them. after Adam and Barbra die they support Lydia (her family moves into there house after they die) and in an interesting win win Lydia gets parents and they get a kid.
Alex brightman’s voice is actually naturally that raspy and raw it’s not a character that’s how he sings its very cool he also voices fizzirolli in helluva boss
it’s not naturally like that, it’s just a skill he has. if you want to hear his natural voice, listen to him in interviews or in the musical “school of rock”.
NOOOOO!!! I was so excited that he was going to listen to Dead Mom, but it was only the last portion. He needs to listen to the whole thing! Easliy one of the best songs.
i loved this reaction!!! if you didn’t know, Beetlejuice is also a movie staring michael keaton and wynona ryder. it was then later turned into musical which is what you’re reacting to. if you want more info about what’s going on, watching the movie would be a good way!!
No, Lydia is not a ghost. She's suicidal. She's saying she doesn't need Beetlejuice because there's already ghosts in the house who can possess people. She's one of very few people who can see ghosts. I'm not sure why Beetlejuice can't say his name, but I'm guessing because it would be too easy to summon him if he could tell them what to say? As it is, his name is actually supposed to be spelled 'Betelgeuse", but it got spelled the way it is now so everyone could pronounce it. The movie isn't scary either, just typical Tim Burton.
I wish he had found an actual version of both Beautiful Sound and Dead mom, that wasn’t halfway through the end of the song. Either way, great video Matt! (If you like any of the songs, definitely look up a full version)
The "Beatifull Sound" song wasn't complete on that video. And the sound they talk about is the screamings and the sound of terror people make when they traumatize people for life.😂
19:18 (in the musical anyway) Lydia’s mother died roughly a year earlier (cause of death; not said) they moved to a new house, and the father moved on from his wife very very quickly. Lydia was upset about all this. She’s contemplating suicide, but beetlejuice stops her, mostly bc he is a demon that needs a living person to say his name 3x. Adam and Barbara are ghost who are recently deceased.
Musical videos are back. I want to tell you that there's a musical based on Death Note. And there's an concept album in english, you could react to it! Musical and anime in the same videos.
some context: "The beautiful sound" was actually not the full song you listened to. Only the last part. The song is one of the first songs of the second act, in which Lydia and Beetlejuice end up scaring anyone who comes up to their door. (Including a young girlscout with heart problems, who ofc has a heart attack. But she ends up being fine). "the beautiful sound" they keep referring to is the sound of screams of terror. "The whole being dead thing." is the second song in the musical. Where Beetlejuice quite literally introduces the AUDIENCE to the concept of death. Yeah, Beetlejuice constantly breaks the fourth wall lol. He's the only character in the musical who does. Depanding on if you watch the show or listen to the album, the lyrics will also change. For example, when listining to the album, the song will say "If you die while listening to this album, it's still gonna keep playing." while in the show he'll say: "If you die during tonight's performance, the show will not stop" "Dead mom" is also not the complete song. The song is about how Lydia deals with the recent death of her mom. She has trouble moving on (naturally) and has fallen into a depression. The line "Or i'll be in my bedroom, wake me whem i'm twentyone." refers to her wanting to drink her pain away, for which you ofc need to be 21 in the states. Her father on the other hand, deals with his wife's death by simply not talking about it. Something Lydia doesn't understand. "Ready set, not yet" is the third song in the play. In which Adam and Barbera Maitland are preparing their home for their future kid (which both ofc aren't ready for and are doubting if they'll even try for a baby rn), but sadly, at the end of the song, both of them fall through the floor and die. Resulting in the now haunted house being bought by Lydia's dad. "Say bmy name" is like is sort of obvious, Beetlejuice trying to onvince Lydia to say his name. Basically, as an old ghost, he is invicible to most people except Lydia. If she says his name 3 times in a row, he'll become visible to all the living. He basically walked into Lydia trying to kill herself and took it as an opportunity to become visible, promising her that he'll make her dad hurt if she helps him out. Also, did the slightly sexual remarks make you uncomfortable, just wait until you hear about the piece of lore that states ghosts can become alive again if they marry the living person who's seen them first. and that's how we get the song "Creepy old guy"
So...Lydia is alive, and wants her dad to acknowledge her, Beetlejuice is a ghost/demon thing who is a human exorcist, at one point sort of employed by the couple in 'say my name', who are the ghosts of the people who died in the earlier song (Adam and Barbara) to get humans out of their house. Things get complex, for Bj to stay out of hell he needs to get married, which is where lydia comes in in his plans. And then for some reason he gets either pushed into hell or eaten by a massive sandworm. Can't remember which, both the musical and the film are beyond weird.
Lydia isn’t a ghost she just wants to unalive herself to get back at her dad for moving on after her mom dies. Then finds out about possession and decides to go with that instead.
There's only one Beetlejuice (his first name is revealed to be Lawrance) but the others were magical clones he creates just in that scene. Also, Lydia is not dead, not a ghost. The Maitland's are ghost. Lydia is the only one who can see them.
7:34 alex can do this thing with his voice. So Alex has a kind of naturally high Tambor to his voice and he started to playing around with his voice to find the right voice for beetlejuice. And what he found is that he sort of a mutant and he has capacity to squeeze together things in his throat that not everybody can. He’s beating other things together in his throat and when he found that out it became wildly easy to play around with.
I was kind of hoping you’d watch one of their songs titled “Creepy Old Guy” your reaction would be hilarious since you wouldn’t have any context on what is happening XD
Please listen to the rest of the soundtrack! Also, you should hunt down the full version of "Dead Mom"!. Here's the song list in case no one's offered one yet, I recommend "Invisible", "No Reason", and "What I Know Now": Prologue/Invisible [✓] The Whole "Being Dead" Thing [✓] Ready Set Not Yet The Whole "Being Dead" Thing, Pt. 2 The Whole "Being Dead" Thing, Pt. 3 (Not in the cast recording) [ * ] Dead Mom Fright Of Their Lives/Ready Set Not Yet (Reprise) No Reason Invisible (Reprise)/On the Roof [✓] Say My Name Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) Girl Scout [✓] That Beautiful Sound Barbara 2.0 The Whole "Being Dead" Thing, Pt. 4 Good Old-Fashioned Wedding What I Know Now Home Creepy Old Guy Jump in the Line/Dead Mom (Reprise)/Home
i believe the grit in beetlejuice's voice is actually a vocal technique called ventricular fold phonation. (i googled it. yeah, that's what its called)
I'm not a big musical person, but I adore this one. It just stands out so much. I actually used The Whole Being Dead Thing to see if my brother would be interested. He got such a kick out of it that he was game to go see it. Took him to see the final show on January 8th. He was laughing, bouncing in his seat, and had a good cry. (He was actually salty about the cry part; I didn't warn him that it has some gut punch moments.) The soundtrack is now in his music rotation. Lmao. (Also-- There's a touring show for it. I haven't seen one of those, but I've heard great things.)
Haven't watched the full thing yet, but did he acknowledge that Lydia's actress was, like, 15 when she started starring as Lydia? Just makes her performance even more mind blowing
lydia isnt a ghost, she says 'make him say my name' since she feels ignored by her father after he moved on so quickly after her mother's death. beetlejuice is somewhat in between a demon and ghost, i think of him as a poltergeist. he calls himself a bio-exorcist and 'helps' new ghosts get rid of people who moved into their houses after they died by haunting them and scaring them to either death or until they move out. beetlejuice cant tell living people his name but can say it to ghosts, hence the charades game.
You gotta watch both the Beetlejuice movie and the cartoon from the 90s. He always sounded like that. 😂 Alex (who as ldo voiced Fizarolli from Helluva Boss) killed it. He goes more the cartoon Beetlejuice route but he got the overall vibe of our dear... BJ. 😂 He's so good.
One of my favorite musicals tbh the cast was too loveable and perfect in their roles and it's a perfect balance of real emotion and comedy. And of course the music is amazing lol I hope you'd be open to maybeeeee doing a reaction to the full play in some kind of stream?? Maybe it could be planned and watched in discord cause damn this is a good one to watch with full context. The master cut you watched of Say My Name is the kind of thing that is best (if you can find them) they're gems because people put effort into sorting through a lot of bootlegs to find the best shots and stitch them all together.
Yes, in there movie, Betelgeuse is definitely a villain. But the musical is based on both the movie and the show and in the animated series, Betelgeuse and Lydia are friends.
Yeeaah, you probably should have watched one of the filmed live performances of the whole being dead thing, it's definitely the better way to experience that one haha.
realistically it only affects demons to say their name three times. Also Lydia is not dead in this show...she's very much alive, but she can see dead people
Oh you poor sweet summer child. Beetlejuice came into this world the same year I did, and the sequel just dropped this year and was WORTH THE WAIT! There was also a cartoon from back in 89 or 90, and this musical from a couple years ago. Watch em all. 💚💚💚💚💚

Lydia feels invisible and pushed away because of this, and worried that her mother's memories were fading as a result.

Remember he is THE VA of Fizzarolli (clown character in Helluva Boss) ✨
Creepy Old Guy is a song where it is necessary to look up the plot of the musical for context
Oh gods, can you imagine his face WITHOUT the context?! 😂😂😂
5:39 He’s breaking the fourth wall, not talking to someone
I love knowing the context and seeing Mathew genuinely confused 😂
So Lydia, the goth chick, is an alive human girl, who embraces the idea of death, and because of that, she is able to see and communicate with the dead. Beetlejuice is a ghost demon dude who's powerful and needs to have his name spoken by someone 3 times for his full potential and begin his master plan. (He's also the worlds creepiest ghost with lewd jokes and stuff left and right) That's all I'll say, hope it didn't spoil all too much.
(But the person who plays Beetlejuice, aka Alex Brightman, is the voice of fizzeroli from helluva boss)
8:44 another line that I like is, “nobody is bulletproof!”
It's actually hilarious in the show when Barbara says "Look at these jugs!" because Beetlejuice just turns around really fast, then he looks annoyed and stalks off. I think he was hoping she was going to flash him and then got all annoyed that she was actually talking about real jugs.
Accidentally hit this notification but oh my god it was a beautiful mistake I love some Mathew content and I fucking adore beetlejuice
happy accident
@@MathewMcKenna you're right holy shit
You should do a video with songs from
the percy jackson: the Lightning Thief
Musical. They are so good! Especially
tree on the hill and my grand plan,
Overall, it's a really fun time, really
recommend. Also, the guy who was
Michael in be more chill (George salazar)
is grover in it!
yes yes yes!! thank you because i've been recommending it for ages as well. super underrated but the songs are amazing!
finding an order of what to listen to would be so interesting here if Matthew doesn’t know PJO
YES P L E A S E
My college did the show just this month. Before, I didn't even know a musical existed, but when I saw the flyers for auditions, I was hyped to see it. I'm not sure how the original cast was like but I did enjoy what I saw at school.
The most mind-blowing thing about anything Beetlejuice is the fact that, despite the musical and movies being called "Beetlejuice", the titular character's name is actually spelled "Betelgeuse".
??????
@@dradel2050 You are welcome
@@dradel2050it's true. It's how it's spelled in there movie and the Broadway show made a replica of the light up sign in the film, so canonically, yes, that is how his name is spelled. It's also a real star in the galaxy.
@@fanime1I herd In some places the star is considered actual bad luck if it’s name is repeated 3 times 💀
This and Death Note The Musical convinced me that anything can become a good musical.
To clarify:
Beetlejuice - Demon. Trapped in the house due to being technically dead. Invisible to living humans.
Adam and Barbara - New homeowners who buy the house and instantly die by falling through a hole in the floor "Ready Set Not Yet" They spend the rest of the show as ghosts.
The rest of the show is set 10 years later when the house is sold again
Lydia - Alive. Just moved in with her dad and new stepmom. Is able to see BJ due to recently having seen the death of her mother.
If we’re getting more musical reactions, I would 100% recommend Twisted. It’s my favourite musical of all time.
Yes yes yes yessssssss please
without spoiling too much (bc i'd love for you to do another video reacting to more of the musical,) lydia is NOT dead. beetlejuice, adam, and barbara are. you got beetlejuice's character down pretty good but adam and barbara are the newly dead ghosts. lydia is the only living person that can see them because ghosts are strange and unusual and as she says; "i myself am strange and unusual"
great video as usual! i'd love for you to react to more broadway :) there's a TON of fantastic shows out there for you to check out
I do want to inform you that there's a beginning to That Beautiful Sound and it's way more chaotic than what you listened to. There's also a beginning to Dead Mom. It gets so crazy.
Yeah the transition from the Original film to the Broadway production did it's thing,
Opening Number: The Whole Being dead Thing: A Meta 4th wall number with plenty of wordplay puns and cultural/Broadway references [Rogers/Hammerstein, [Sound of Music etc score writers]
Ready, Set. Not Yet: Adam and Barbara's song of Procrastination and aimlessness...
Lydia: "Dead Mom": Lydia's power ballad to feeling invisible, missing her mom and being generally depressed and angry at her dad
Say my Name: BeetleJuice's attempt to convince Lydia to 'summon' him to 'employ' him to get her dad's attention
That Beautiful sound: A celebratory song w/ Lydia And Beetle juice for getting her dad's attention and being 'seen"
maybe not the most accurate summary but lol
SPOILER
Beetlejuice is a story about found family, Adam and Barbra never got the chance to have a kid due to all the fears of not being ready.
No it's not naturally like that? He uses a voice distortion with his vocal folds to achieved that sound. Its a technique.
it’s not naturally like that, it’s just a skill he has. if you want to hear his natural voice, listen to him in interviews or in the musical “school of rock”.
Yeaahhhhh no, his voice isn’t like that
I think by naturally the commenter was saying he does that without computer effects
@@lydiphobiaHES IN SCHOOL OF ROCK?
Fun Fact: Beetlejuice in the Musical is the same actor for Fizzaroli in Helluva Boss Alex Brightman!
The "Beatifull Sound" song wasn't complete on that video. And the sound they talk about is the screamings and the sound of terror people make when they traumatize people for life.😂
Yes, “The Whole Being Dead Thing” is the intro song and yes all of that (minus background singers) is Bettlejuice himself.
The is fun, also Jermey Jordan is awesome.
some context:
"The beautiful sound" was actually not the full song you listened to.
For example, when listining to the album, the song will say "If you die while listening to this album, it's still gonna keep playing." while in the show he'll say: "If you die during tonight's performance, the show will not stop"
"Dead mom" is also not the complete song.
Beetlejuice is so chaotic and it’s amazing
DO THE FULL VERSION OF DEAD MOM PLEASE ITS TOOO GOOOD
So...Lydia is alive, and wants her dad to acknowledge her, Beetlejuice is a ghost/demon thing who is a human exorcist, at one point sort of employed by the couple in 'say my name', who are the ghosts of the people who died in the earlier song (Adam and Barbara) to get humans out of their house. Things get complex, for Bj to stay out of hell he needs to get married, which is where lydia comes in in his plans. And then for some reason he gets either pushed into hell or eaten by a massive sandworm. Can't remember which, both the musical and the film are beyond weird.
Adam and Barbara* but I'd say the rest is about right
@@trystinew.469 My mistake, fixed it.
The only songs ive heard from this musical is "Dead mom" and "Say my name"
For me it was this whole being dead thing and say my name
The whole being dead thing is probably cus I’m in hb
Lydia isn’t a ghost she just wants to unalive herself to get back at her dad for moving on after her mom dies. Then finds out about possession and decides to go with that instead.
There's only one Beetlejuice (his first name is revealed to be Lawrance) but the others were magical clones he creates just in that scene. Also, Lydia is not dead, not a ghost. The Maitland's are ghost. Lydia is the only one who can see them.
she's not dead, she's just goth 😭
Mathew always comes up with such an amazing content and she always makes our day or night even better RESPECT
No, Lydia is not dead she’s alive. She can see ghosts though.
7:34 alex can do this thing with his voice.
So Alex has a kind of naturally high Tambor to his voice and he started to playing around with his voice to find the right voice for beetlejuice.
And what he found is that he sort of a mutant and he has capacity to squeeze
together things in his throat that not
everybody can. He’s beating other things together in his throat and when he found that out it became wildly easy to play around with.
Mathew: At the end of this video I finally get it. He’s a demon-
Me: Yes!
Mathew: She’s a ghost-
Me: NO!
Lydia isn't dead. The other two are though 😊
Fantastic reaction. I hope to see you reacting to the other songs because they are fantastic!
I definitely recommend checking out the full songs, that beautiful sound for example started like halfway 😅
And dead mom you missed a lot of the song
4:34 yes there is only one beetlejuice
I was kind of hoping you’d watch one of their songs titled “Creepy Old Guy” your reaction would be hilarious since you wouldn’t have any context on what is happening XD
You should totally listen to the full version of “Dead Mom”! I love that song sm
Please listen to the rest of the soundtrack! Also, you should hunt down the full version of "Dead Mom"!.

i believe the grit in beetlejuice's voice is actually a vocal technique called ventricular fold phonation.
(He was actually salty about the cry part; I didn't warn him that it has some gut punch moments.)
The soundtrack is now in his music rotation. Lmao.
(Also-- There's a touring show for it. I haven't seen one of those, but I've heard great things.)
The touring show is great. The actors playing Lydia and Betelgeuse are the closest I've seen come to the original cast.
I’m going to see the touring show in a few months! Definitely haven’t been listening to the soundtrack on repeat since I’m so excited-
Haven't watched the full thing yet, but did he acknowledge that Lydia's actress was, like, 15 when she started starring as Lydia? Just makes her performance even more mind blowing
Loved you reactions, but I'm so sad you didn't hear all of Dead Mom. It's such an amazing song! I highly recommend listening to the full version!
He’s a ghost demon since one of his catchphrases is the ghost with the most
The eyeliner made it look like he was crying 😂
I would love if he did a part two to this and maybe even an "Out of Context" reaction vid
This is my favorite broadway musical. For the past two years, Alex Brightman has been my top artist.
The timing of this video is HILARIOUS because I’m literally going to see Beetlejuice live on Saturday
lydia isnt a ghost, she says 'make him say my name' since she feels ignored by her father after he moved on so quickly after her mother's death. beetlejuice is somewhat in between a demon and ghost, i think of him as a poltergeist. he calls himself a bio-exorcist and 'helps' new ghosts get rid of people who moved into their houses after they died by haunting them and scaring them to either death or until they move out. beetlejuice cant tell living people his name but can say it to ghosts, hence the charades game.
You should definitely listen to Ride The Cyclone! Especially The Ballad Of Jane Doe
The only thing i can hear when i hear beetlejuice sing is fizzarolli
In the whole being dead thing BJ is addressing the audience
realistically it only affects demons to say their name three times. Also Lydia is not dead in this show...she's very much alive, but she can see dead people
why is it just now that I notice Alex Brightman is also Fizarolli's and pugley's voice actor-
OMG THIS IS MY FAVOURITE MUSICAL!!!!!!!! I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS VIDEO ITS GONNA BE INCREDIBLE- WAS TOO THRILLED HAD TO COMMENT RIGHT AWAY LMAODNDK
Oh you poor sweet summer child. Beetlejuice came into this world the same year I did, and the sequel just dropped this year and was WORTH THE WAIT! There was also a cartoon from back in 89 or 90, and this musical from a couple years ago.
Watch em all. 💚💚💚💚💚

IM SO HAPPY YOU REACTED TO THIS!!!
PLEASE DO MORE BROADWAY!
That’s Alex Brightmans version of Beetlejuice I love it so much
You really should react to the next ones, seriously! Especially to Creppy Old Guy (but listen to the others first so you have at least SOME bit of context) and What I Know Now.
Also, honey, u just heard Barbara and Adam DYING! THEY are the ghosts. Beetlejuice is a demon, and Lydia is just an emo/goth regular kid that somehow can see and interact with them all (and through the song he's trying to convince her not to jump of her home's roof cuz he needs her to say his name 3 times while being alive and to find another way, WITH HIS "HELP", to get her daddy's attention instead of ending her life)
Just for context when they refer to 'that beautiful sound' they’re taking about screams ❤
