One of the reasons the Lorax cares so much is because they have a very small ecosystem, even though it's thriving it's very fragile. It has 3 animal species plus the space appearances of the Lorax, 1 species of tree, grass and maybe a few shrubs. When The Oncler starts chopping down trees which is one of the only suppliers of food (the weird fruit things) they are very understandably concerned.
For those of you who either haven't done their biology unit in science or forgot about it; having a small ecosystem is pretty bad. If one species is taken out (in this case the trees) something like what happens in this movie can happen, it's very plausible!

Aye it's just the movie missed it's mark by starting after just ONE tree as making the onceler a bad guy, makes it more an extremist environmental movie, which I why every kid in my highschool class hated the movie and none of us wrote good papers on it

    • @sabertoothno34
      @sabertoothno34 ปีที่แล้ว +30

@@Zamerus a reason a lot of people hate it is because if you've read the book or seen the 2d animation of The Lorax, the Onceler was originally just green gloves... actually ALL the humans you see are behind a wall with the only indication of them being human is the green gloves. Because, a company is not just one person it's a train made of apathy with its only goal being to keep the supply going as long as it's in demand. A business can't feel, it can't see what an individual sees, it just does what it's meant to so this movie giving everyone an appearance screws up the meaning.

the original Lorax movie is a cartoon from 1972 and is SO much more depressing. it doesn’t include Ted’s storyline and just ends with all the forest animals losing their home and the environment destroyed. definitely made me very aware of the state of the world as a child lol

And yk the SADDEST PART??? See, in this version the onceler actually seems to feel bad for what he's done. In the og, he had VERY LITTLE empathy for the cute, innocent animals he caused to suffer and become homeless. As was said in the video, "how can you not feel horrible about doing this?" But, that's capitalism baby! Imo, they humanized the onceler in the 2012 movie too much. Ig it's so people will relate to him, since I don't think most regular people could cause suffering of others and not care, idk

    • @mckenzie.latham91

the ending of the original was left ambiguous because it was a comment on “will we tally change or do anything?”
it was left open as a question to make the point of urgency but also make kids and people realize some “truths” about the world.
Here they need to have a good ending because corporate studio test audiences would never have liked an ambiguous ending,
and they wouldn’t;t be able to ponder to the lowest common denominator and child attention span.

But Biggering is also well liked because its the opposite of How Bad Can I Be, its in your face kind of message is something a lot of people enjoy. Not only that but I feel like people enjoy Biggering because the message shouldn't be subtle at all. This is a really big issue and most people would ignore their problems until its right in front of them. There is not subtle way to tell someone that animals are going extinct and ecosystems are being destroyed. Biggering and How Bad Can I Be are both really good songs and to me are on even footing. Also Biggering makes the Once-ler feel more like a villain (like the book one), but because we know his reasons and thought prosses How Bad Can I Be suited him more (in the movie).

What's really sad is that if they had gone with the original version of the opening number, Efron would have actually gotten to sing since Ted actually has an entire verse in that version.

The original 70’s special was way better, it better represented the ACTUAL real world of business
in this to make the unclear not seen as a bad guy, they have him instead be manipulated by his family, and becoming blinded by success
So he’s not a real bad person, he just made a mistake.
whereas in the original special. the lorax and the Oncler go back and forth about the needs of business and nature
with the lorax pointing out that the pollution and environmental destruction by the industrialization is ruining the environment and making it harder to breathe, while chasing away the animals
whereas the Oncler points out that his factories are providing jobs and income for people and their families, and if he stops or shuts them down, all those people will be jobless and have no income
it was a conversation that represented the different interests of both sides, and was promoting the idea that there needs to be some kind of compomise
BUT the Lorax has no clue what that compromise is and the Oncler is unwilling to even think about it, because it’s not as conveninet as the status quo.

But it has a surprising amount of heart, it goes completely off the walls with no attempt to have things actually make sense; but it owns that fact. It commits so hard to the wacky world and nonsense that is synonymous with Dr. Seuss and fully delivers on teaching a moral that I think it's probably the most Dr. Seuss like adaptation of a Dr. Seuss book. That’s because your doing it the wrong way. If *I* was involved, I would just have them cut just above the bottom of the fluffy bit. Like, harvest as much of the fluff as possible in one fell swoop, while still allowing it to eventually regrow. Then it’d be more sustainable

See, this movie is iconic because of just how unhinged it is. But I can never shake off the fact that the movie had a bunch of tie-ins with gigantic corporate entities. Promoting cars with images of the Lorax and the movie. It has no heart. It has no soul. But it is insane, and the memes are too notch. So, I guess something good did come from this movie.

Yeah, something I noticed is that many reactors tend to question things that happen in movies a lot, particularly if they have surreal aspects to it, which I get, but at the same time it's kinda annoying since it can take them out of the experience if they're constantly questioning what's happening. And sometimes they'd get the answer to their questions if they just kept watching or paid attention in the moments they took to ask them.

I’d like to add that this movie had a HUGE tonal shift mid production. The movie we got was not the movie that was planned, and it’s worse off for it. I mean, half of the movie is literally a big time CEO’s sob story. “I didn’t know I was destroying the envirownment, I just wanted to impwess my family” 🥺👉👈. Which will add to the uncanny felling as… he’s also the bad guy. O’Hare gets what’s coming to him, but for some reason we just pretend the oncelr wasn’t the cause of all of this. The story we got wasn’t actually anti pollution or consumerism, it was just anti O’Hare. And because of that there’s gonna be disconnect between the movie and anyone who actually thinks about the “lessons” the movie presents.

It couldn't hurt."), Ted also change his motivation from impressing Audrey to actually save the world, the whole thing with why O'Hare's products became in demand, etc!

I get why he doesn't just give the seed out like that because the person needs to understand the value that it has through the story. But why would he put more hurdles in the way of someone that is interested in regrowing the trees? Payment, threats, a dangerous path, breaking the story into segments instead of just telling them outright. The Onceler still hasn't gotten over his greed.

I'm not surprised people are confused about who the bad guy is as this movie introduced multiple antagonists. the original story was simply about the onceler being consumed by greed and ruining things. (they didn't have an abusive family push him into it) the little boy hes telling the story to is both a framing device and a stand in for the audience he is barely a character just a symbol that even when things were ruined by the last generation we can still work to fix our future. this movie decided to insert an entire dystopian community headed by a businessman with henchmen who need to be defeated by our young hero instead. it is not necessarily bad. there are some interesting things they added and commentaries made but it really boats out the story to the point its hardly recognizable.

I spent this whole reaction wondering if you'd heard of Dr Suess... only to find out that you have, but somehow didn't know this movie is based on one of his books? The original is also FAR darker than this movie... for one, everything beyond the Once-ler telling his backstory were written solely for the movie; the unnamed listener didn't come from the a colourful "utopia" called Thneedville, if they came from anywhere at all.
The Once-ler's face is never shown, and he had no family to speak of; his actions were entirely his own. The ending was also left ambiguous: the Lorax never returned, and it's never shown what the child did with the seed. For all we know, they tossed it away.
