Why I Rescue Abandoned Pet Chickens (And 5 Things About Them Worth Giving A Cluck About)

  • Noel Tan, 24, is the co-founder of Chicken Adoption Rescue Singapore and has been rescuing abandoned pet chickens since 2020. To date, his rescue group has helped to rehome and rescue roughly 500 chickens and other poultry like quails, ducks and turkeys.
“Chickens are pretty intelligent,” he says, adding that they use up to 30 different sounds to communicate with their flocks.
Despite their smarts and other endearing traits, Noel says people often leave comments like this on his rescue centre’s Facebook page: “Oh, just eat the chickens lah! Rescue for what?”
But pet chickens - popular species include the silkies, cochins, seramas and bantam - are unlike wild ones like the junglefowl. “These are very docile, very tame chickens, and they do not know how to fend for themselves,” Noel explains.
Such chickens are often abandoned in parks or around housing estates, left to the mercy of outdoor elements and predators like cats or snakes. Owners often desert them because of noise and smell complaints from family members and neighbours.
By sharing interesting (and perhaps lesser known) facts about chickens in this video, Noel hopes that more people will come forward to help to foster or adopt them.

I'd work in a place like this. We rescued chickens from slaughter and learned just how intelligent and protective they are. We had Pigeons as well. All make incredible companions.

Agree with you. That's meaningful that you did that. And I've finally found someone who has similar thoughts as me. Chicken could fly and are intelligent. We had another cage for them to go in to sleep at night. After a while they would jump in on their own when we put it near them. We took care of small pigeon as well. :)

Good on them for setting up a rescue and providing education in this area where it is obviously needed. Is there a link for help or donations?

One of your chickens - the Silkie Rooster_ has Vent Gleet /Pasty Butt. You need to clear it with tepid water Booty Baths plus anti parisite or fungal meds or just adjusting their mineral requirements in the feed. Hens can become Egg-bound if they have this condition. Poop observation is very important in keeping healthy chickens.

How do you judge a person will keep it as a pet or just turn around and sale it or worst eat the cute pet?

I don’t get it, why ppl in Singapore would buy chickens as pets?
Singapore has next to no land, and even if someone is rich enough to live on a landed property, the land is usually very very small, if a chicken crows the whole neighborhood could hear it
Singapore is definitely not a place to keep chickens
Then again, this guy in the video seems like a really nice and kind kid, bless him for having the heart to help out the chickens

Very unusual. My wife and I often seen chickens running around in the open, crossing traffic lights even. You should release some of them back, it is fun to see them running around.

Here in Philippines, you can find chickens anywhere. Most of the chicken are ROOSTERS (for derby/sabong). I remember in my childhood my father and older brother would raising hybrid chickens for cockfighting, a rooster and a hen for laying eggs, i always stole eggs and boiled it or màke an scramble egg, my father would always get frustrated 🤣🤣

Those who support chicken fight are worse than eating chicken. They don't respect life for their enjoyment and gambling
