    Tarkin: Those rebel starfighters are pounding our Star Destroyers. We need a new class of ship to deal with them.
    Officer 1: I have just the thing, sir! The Lancer-class frigate is armed to the teeth with quad-laser cannons that can see off any rebel assault with hardly any damage!
    Tarkin: Hmm... not feeling it. Next?
    Officer 2: The Tector-class Star Destroyer. We take an Imperial-class, strip off its point-defense guns and fighter hangers, and replace them with more turbolasers.
    Tarkin: Brilliant!

    So in summary, frigates aren't a well defined ship category in Star Wars with nebulous role in combat, therefore:
    - the Lancer class makes for a hell of a corvette
    - the Carack class is a tidy little pocket Star Destoryer except it's the wrong shape
    - the Nebulon B is a hell of a light cruiser (in the sense it does the traditional cruiser job of independent operations)
    - and the Corona class ships are useful combat support ships.

    @VaciliNikoMavich 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Eeee, I love the Carrack! ^_^
    To me the ranking is:
    1. Carrack -its speedy, and honestly the ion cannon version is a must. Once the enemy shields are out, blow them to pieces.
    2. Corona because its tankie and strangely fast.
    3. Lancer because it IS an anti fighter ship...though the Tartan Patrol Cruiser will always be the best.
    4. The Nebulon B is a joke and death trap. I would never want to serve on a ship that literally may as well be connected toghether by a bendy straw.

  • @jameskandosii240
    @jameskandosii240 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think it’s very important to remember the necessity of frigates, which greatly influences its role. Take the star destroyer for example, what does it need to work better? More fighters, more turbolasers, more anti start fighter power or more anti capital ship power.
    One SD class 2 wouldn’t need any of these things. They functioned very independently with the exception of needing more ships to cover more ground in planetary subjugation. So frigates would more heavily need the ability to stop fast ships leaving orbit. This fits the lancer.
    In major battles the carrack is absolutely the most dangerous dagger an admiral can carry as long as he has an equal star fighter capability to the enemy. It is said that even a few carracks could destroy a capital ship. Of course not in a situation with out any support but having the ability to take one ship 1/10 the size, and 33% of a capital ship and send it in to support a capital ship, can easily make winning flanks and decisive victory over flag ships possible without having to commit another capital ship.
    Thoughts?

    • @luodaniel8576
      @luodaniel8576 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do agree with all your points except with the one with lancer: IMO it is extremely slow as a frigate and in EaW it can't even catch up with an Imperial-class, so it would probably act better when guarding capital ships instead of acting as a blockade enforcer.
      When capital ships are on the assault, though, its speed makes the Lancer a hindrance unless the commander can be absolutely sure that the battlespace is clear of fighters, else a few squadrons of bombers can easily deal disproportionate damage to isolated capital ships.

      A modified version of the Lancer with a pair torpedo launchers, one front, one back. It wouldn't take much room or require lasercannons being swapped out, and carrying mixed ordinance could help make it more flexible, thus appealing to the Empire's top brass, _who were fine with ISD's being specialized though…_
      Have anti Starfighter missiles/torpedos to supplement the lasercannons at long distance in case enemy fighters try to take you out with torpedo shots without ever getting into lasercannon range.
      And also have a load of Protons for Corvettes ect that might be a hassle if the ISD is busy slugging it out with other capital ships or the Lancer is caught by itself.
      Of course if the frigate is supposed to operate independently then all bets are off. But if you're going to make a good all-rounder go for a cruiser, it's (generally) larger size gives you more options.

    The moment the Lancer was mentioned, I knew it would be taking the top spot. In terms of *TECH* the Corona is the "better" ship, but it's a super-advanced all-purpose thing, which isn't really suitable for the typical frigate role. With older designs, the Nebulon-B was a generalist, but that's a big part of why it was a bad frigate in its era. It lacks a specific role it can fill, and the Corona, while advanced enough to get away with doing so, makes the same mistake. The Carrack is a dedicated fire support ship for combatting capital ships. Backing up a larger capital ship, it can act as a force multiplier, notably improving the damage output against the enemy fleet. But the Lancer allows the capital ships to just focus everything onto enemy capitals while it handles anti-fighter duty. It can be used in place of large squadrons of superiority fighters, allowing for larger bomber swarms backed up by small numbers of fighter escorts, and the Lancer can do the rest. That makes it synergise better with typical Imperial doctrine by providing a powerful counterpoint to their usual strategy.

    Pair a couple Lancers with a Carrack, and toss in some Xg-1s, either using their hyperdrives or piggybacking on the three capital ships, and you'd have quite the formidable strike force.

  • @Cosmonauticus0982
    @Cosmonauticus0982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think your rankings are spot on. Though I like a well-rounded ship I would say the Lancer is my top frigate, it just works really well in its role within a battle group. The Carrack is awesome but if operating on it's own as the Empire tended to use them it would be challenging for it to slug it out with a capital ship it's supposed to hunt. Now if it was ambushing its capital ship prey that would be a different story.

  • @Eleolius
    @Eleolius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Carrack was committing suicide in capital ship engagements. Mostly it existed to bully up-gunned corvettes and to scare away pirates and raiders. In the lore, they tended to get wrecked by Victories and concentrated snubcraft runs.

    Sensible the only point I would make is that the lancer is only #1 due to the empires doctrine meaning it was a needed slot and filled it. In a more rounded force the Corona is good at anti-starfighter which is less needed without the TIE swarm docterine leading to screening issues but is able to provide fleet backup in ways the hyper-specialised Lancer would be unable to

      You make a fair point, but even if you stick the lancer within the republic navy (Has better starfighter doctrine and fights against enemy with star fighters).

    Seems like the hardest thing for many writers to create and directors to visualize is good military strategy.

    I'm partial to the anti-starfighter variant of the Carrack. It has the same number of anti-starfighter batteries as the Lancer, thought they're lighter (single versus quad), plus enough turbolasers to defend itself from other Frigates, and enough armour and shielding to survive a heavy hit or two if used to protect dueling Star Destroyers from enemy Starfighters.
    Also, according to some Legends sources, the Carrack could carry 5 TIE fighters on external racks.

    Something I would have liked to hear your thoughts on is expanding on not just the design-role of the ships, but also their role in the fleets they were operating in. I think Carracks, for example, were amazing ships with proven effectiveness but just weren’t often fielded optimally within their fleet compositions given the emphasis on star cruisers and later destroyers. All that said though I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the list.

    I prefer well-rounded ship for just about any class of ship. The “frigate” for the Taranajans (my own Fanon race) is a well-rounded ship. I put “frigate” in quotes because it is closer in size to an ISD, but serves the role of a frigate because the Taranajans’ Dragonfang-class Star Destroyer is a true behemoth, longer than an Executor and armed to the teeth. It can even channel Dark-Side energy to generate an energetic pulse that is so powerful, six or seven can destroy a medium-sized planet.

      That's merely a symptom of the much larger folly of the Empire: they didn't take the Rebels seriously. To them, it wasn't a war, it was a policing action to quell dissidents. They underestimated the Rebels, and thought they could break them psychologically with the biggest and most imposing war machines they could field. The Empire's doctrine, and by extension, its equipment, was designed to keep the galaxy peaceful through fear, not fight a war.

      That's what made that particular scenario so deadly. A Lancer and Carrack together is a highly lethal combination. The Lancer can wipe the floor with Rebel/New Republic fighters while the Carrack dishes out the damage to the enemy capital ships. Throw in an Escort Carrier to get some Imperial fighter squadrons in the mix and you have basically the trifecta of super focused Imperial designs working in tandem with each other and not a one being a Star Destroyer of any kind.

    I absolutely love the Carrack. In addition to what was said, it’s localized life support systems meant great survivability for the crew (even if the ship is incapacitated, there’s a good chance most of the crew would survive) and there was so much automation that even though a standard crew was over 1000 people, it could be operated by as few as two. Also, even if it’s anti star fighter configuration was more rare, it could be easily configured for that need (each one of those weapons emplacements was modular, so you could outfit it to your specific wants and needs). Between the additional fire power and its greater sublight speed (able to match the speed of X-Wings) I actually think it’s better than the Lancer against starfighters if it’s under that configuration. So, ya, Carrack all the way for me.

    • @NoThumb1237
      @NoThumb1237 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed, the anti-starfighter was more common than Ecks says, but I would imagine this version was more commonly found as an escort in fleet engagements. These anti-starfighter emplacements seem to be decently deadly, as they are described as flak lasers and have the ability to target incoming munitions. Though I would imagine the Lancer's quad arrays have the same abilities as well as better targeting. But this is no slap against the Carrack, as the lancer was incredibly advanced as an anti-starfighter barge.
      The Carrack with ion cannons was probably used more in patrol or small task forces. As Wedge described, a Lancer and a Carrack together. This Carrack was most likely the ion cannon version, as this way, they both complemented each other perfectly.
      But yeah, the anti-starfighter Carrack is my go-to imperial escort. Still deadly against starfighters, can bully enemy corvettes and light frigates, can take a decent amount of damage, and most importantly, is fast and maneuverable enough to react to enemy starfighter/corvette movements.

    The Carrack would wipe the other 3 in a straight fight. The Carracks anti fighter option was more rare simply because the Republic faced more high tonnage warships but also had a superior starfighter corps. This is why something as small as the C-70 had primarily anit capital weapons. When the bulk of the enemy fleet is Munificents that can one shot a Lancer, it requires heavier ships, even the smaller ones

    I agree with the logic here. In the end, the frigate is a picket ship--meant to keep your big vessels safe from long ranged missile salvos or fighter squadrons. Something brimming with point defense is a good way to go about doing that.
    It's funny because outside of certain situations it might be the weakest ship on its own, but a vessel of this type is meant to ber serving a larger whole.

  • @centermassgamer323
    @centermassgamer323 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with everything you said. But you forgot something very important about the Carrack that I believe pushes it to the #1 spot, that is its speed. The carrack has an MGLT of 80. Compare that to the lancers 20, the Nebulon B’s 40. I could not find any information as to the speed of the Corona, but given it is better then the nebulon b in every other metric I would say it has to be more then 40, and since the new republic liked fast ships I would guesstimate it would be much faster. But I don’t see it being over 60 (if it was, it would definitely be mentioned as that is very fast.) A t65 xwing had a MGLT of 100, however its atmospheric speed is 1,050 kph. The exact same as a Carrack. This shows how extremely fast the carrack was for its size. I believe that this speed, coupled with its durability and exceptional armament ranks it as #1.

    A task force of a carrack, Lancer and Nebby will give you a great well rounded capability with the carrack being able to punch hard with capital ships, the lancer to screen fighters and bombers, and the nebby for support with both roles plus bringing starfighters or bombers into battle thanks to its theoretical squadrons docked along the spine of the ship.

    My theory about the Nebulon B, is that it's the literal backbone of a modular weapons system. That's why the shell seems incomplete, and there's that skinny, vulnerable spine. They're supposed to have other modules in front of and behind the "chin" and around the spine. The reason why the rebels could get hold of the Nebulon B, is that they were obsolete military vessels, which were de-militarized then sold to the public. Being modular, the Empire de-militarized them by simply scrapping the modules. However, they retained military grade power, drive, and shield systems, so they were easy for the Rebels to re-militarize. However, since the modules were no longer around, they couldn't be replaced. This is why their shape is so weird and strangely vulnerable. (I could totally imagine such modules making the Nebulon B kinda close in appearance and function to the Lancer frigate, just with a more prominent chin.)

For anti-capship it carries 24 heavy turbolasers and 20 ion cannons, for anti-starfighter it has a hangar bay capable of carrying a staggering 72 fighters, coupled with shields that matched or exceeded those of a Mon Calamari vessel of equal size and you get the best frigate in Star Wars
