    This is absolutely an amazing documentary. So much history properly told and I'm flooded with great Arcade memories. I remember when Samurai Shodown 2 hit the arcades in 94 and how floored we were to witness it. When it came to detailed 2D fighting game stages, no company could touch SNK back then. Thank you for your hard work and fantastic video.

      First time in a long while I can drink my Whisky and relax to such a great narration. I'm from Europe and a country without any Arcade Culture, so I haven't the strongest bonds to SNK, but man, I'm a big fan of Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters and there clearly aren't enough good people out there on TH-cam who come up with good SNK stuff. Great channel.

      @@franciscor390 I will. Hope they will create a Switch port (if announced) along with the other big consoles. Really enjoyed XIV. I think their DLC mechanics are acceptable. I mean, way more acceptable in comparison to Koei Tecmo and this damn Mortal Kombat XI where the retail version feels like you're playing on an arcade cabinet with all the monetization. Really hope SNK will not cross the border to scam people like they do. But I do think they will handle new titles quite well.

    Samurai Shodown was the reason I bought a 3DO system back in the day. While some may fault that version, at the time the 3DO port by Crystal Dynamics was the finest non-NeoGeo version available and I feel it still holds up today. Yes, the 3DO only had a 2x CDROM, but that was a lot faster during gameplay than the painfully slow, but slightly more accurate NeoGeo CD version.

    • @koolk2115
      @koolk2115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the 3DO version as well. You are absolutely right about it being the closest port. My cousins and I would play for hours. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was an excellent port as well.

    Thank you for releasing the full documentary. I learned a lot about the series from this. Growing up I played the original in the arcade and eventually 2, 3 and 4. Most arcades closed in my area but I think I played Samurai Shodown V at the Jersey shore many years ago. I own the first game on Gameboy, Game Gear, Super Nintendo and 3DO.
    In my area Samurai Shodown was not common but the multigame arcade cabinets with Fatal Fury and World Heroes were found at roller skating rinks and movie theaters. I had an opportunity to play The Last Blade a few times which is my favorite series by SNK after Samurai Shodown.

I'm just glad that even now those legendary games are still updating giving us grown-ups the entertainment as just had when we were just little children and now for this new generation to experience that same excitement we felt back then... Awesome video. I remember the first time I saw Samurai Shodown. It was round about the time arcades really took off in my country - right about the time several new malls were built in my area so you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one. Naturally each mall had a movie theatre with attached arcade. In my case, I used to go with my mother on her Friday-after-school weekly grocery shopping trips to a particular mall, and I'd go and hang out in the arcade with whatever pennies I saved during the week.
    I already knew about Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and a few other versus fighters, but the first time I laid eyes on Samurai Shodown, I just clicked with it. Unfortunately, I was shyte at the game, so I never got much play value for the tokens I pumped into it, but I still loved it. Some time later, it was joined by Samurai Shodown II, which was even more amazing to me. I had a Zambian friend at school who was also a fighting game player, and Samurai Shodown was all we would ever talk about - rumours we'd heard about how to do certain moves and such... Looking back, we clearly thought there was more to it than there actually was - but still a good time to be a teen gamer. He would also rant and rave in double dutch to me about this game called The King of Fighters, which was in the local arcade where he lived, but it didn't come to any arcades I could easily reach and I wouldn't play it for the first time until a few years later on console.
    I desperately wanted a home version of Samurai Shodown II, but it never happened. The Neo Geo console wasn't available in my country and, even if it was, it would have been so expensive hell would have frozen over before my parents would have let me get it, even for a combined birthday and christmas present. So, years later, I had to make do with pirate ROMs, but finally when the ACA releases came out, I snapped those up - and also the recently released collection.
    I love Samurai Shodow.

    Awesome job man, really quite an amazing documentary. You can tell that it is a work of passion!
    Just a little correction/distinction though. I will not talk about the 3DO port because I don't know that machine well enough (although I have a big suspicion that it is the same case as the Saturn), the Saturn port did not suffer mainly because of the slow disk tech of the time, but because of the lack of RAM. That lack of RAM made it then rely on the disk drive more, which, as you said, was slow, and thus compounded the problem. Which is why SS III and IV ports worked WAY better, because those used the RAM cartridge (it just shows how starved of RAM the Saturn really was, because of the HUGE difference only 1MB of RAM had).
    It is also how more impressive games Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter could even work, but with the help of the 4MB RAM cart this time around.

    Excellent video documentation of the history! I love playing this series of games and wasn't aware of all the releases, wan-fu was my main in the first two installments but was saddened when he was dropped in later versions. The game mechanics and features got way too complicated and it was hard to find arcades that offered it. Now through ports I can play the anthology and the latest game is like coming home. Thanks again n I subscribed after watching this video! Cheers

    Your pronunciation of the Japanese words in this video are very good! Whenever you get someone on TH-cam who has to pronounce Japanese words you tend to find them fuck up at least one word but usually most Japanese words get pronounced wrong. It’s unusual to hear someone pronounce all the Japanese words and sentences correctly
