That's how it should be for OTHERS game devs for the FGC don't bend immediately, find the root of the problem and then apply your judgement with rational thinking, instead of "OH THAT'S BROKEN THEY SAID, OK NERF."
@@lordjimbo2 ah, that explains it. At least in this case, it's just "woes of playing a disadvantaged char" instead of a "universally everyone is having problems here" like it used to be. It's super good to see that IG handled the nerfing in such a measured way.
c-c-c-c-c-combo breaker! I said: "What the hell was that?!" when I went to the theater back in 94. My jaw dropped at how realistic it looked. That was my introduction to KI.

Adam Heart - 1:18:42 The best 3 minutes of any fighting game documentary ever. This was my favorite game growing up with a SNES at my Grandma’s house. In High School, it became my introduction into the FGC. The people I’ve met here have become lifelong friends, and it wouldn’t have happened if Microsoft didn’t take a chance on this absurd concept of a game. #bringbackki
Killer instinct just nailed everything they did from the music to the epic announcer voice to beefy combos to the visuals.... this game is the 90s embodied to me love my spinal .... the arcade cabinet gave me chills as a kid

This doc is a really interesting study in organizational behavior, politics in the developer-community relationship, and how to encourage a good development process. I watched this whole doc and I don't even really play fighting games.
That's the point of people who watch tv. They do not do anything. Are just spectators. It's why it's mistake if you say people are into sports; they are into watching sports on tv. As watching tv is not a sport or an activity.
@@Seq-ei2pw can you explain why it's both? (*Fun coincidental fact: I even played KI today! Not as good as I used to be... but I like to think it's my cheapo controller)
Killer Instinct has "counter-broken" the way fighting games should been seen, received and played. It has shown us its principles (Bluff), some people did laugh at it (Combo Breaker) yet it kept going (Counter-Breaker) into an Ultra game. Thanks and shoutouts to anybody involved in the production of the documentary.
I'm not even all the way through this doc, and there are so many golden nuggets of wisdom about the development and attitude around fighting games that I think the ENTIRE FGC could do with learning. Adam Heart says some really amazing things throughout the entirety of this piece. Every person who has ever complained about game balancing on Twitter, and every person who considers themselves a member of the FGC really owes it to themselves to watch this doc, especially 1:19:30 UPDATE: having finished the doc, this game looks sick, I love the dev philosophy, and the game looks rad as hell! I've never touched this game, but I'm definitely picking it up! #BringBackKI incredible work good sir! Thank you for all of your quality FGC docs!
I just randomly searched Killer Instinct. This video is amazing. It brings a tear to my eye to know there are other people out who loved the original game like I did. ❤️
I can still remember the first time I went into an arcade in 1995 and saw the Killer Instinct machine there with it's music and sounds. I played as Orchid and was instantly hooked. It is hands down one of the best fighting games ever made. KI2 was a masterpiece as well. Ahh.. the good old days. Can't believe it's almost 28 years since KI first came out (1994).
I am developing a fighting game with a small team. This video is very inspiring because you literally never see developers excited to talk about their work. They normally are just in an interview, only allowed to say a few things, and that's it. Our team is working with the MUGEN engine to learn retro gameplay without learning a new engine and with the limitations, you need to be creative to make your game shine. We found that sound is a major key to a game and I was very surprised to see this recognized. Many indie fighters drop the ball on sound. SOUND IS IMPORTANT!
Just some realistic feedback from a technical manager...Sound is the only reason I still don't care about MK X and MK 11... the sound is nice and clear now, but I can't stand when you pull off a fatality and you hear this stupid little symphony musical riff done on a tiny little keyboard, have the controls taken away from you and then you watch some bizarre extended 15-20 second Dexter kill animation (which is mostly reused between the models btw). The big black announcer isn't menacing sounding either..he's just reading the script without passion. It's not MK1-4 anymore, where the more basic music, vocals, and sounds were actually more effective due to the technical limitations than now. The KI 1 and 2, and even 2013, are all masterpieces in terms of what they've done with the audio and sound. SF2-5 also are all good with me as well...I regularly listen to all these tracks. I'd take cues from what these teams have done.
So 48:40 hit extremely close to home, because that's exactly what happened to me. When I got Killer Instinct back in 2016 (didn't have an xbox, and it was around the time it got Windows 10 support), I already knew which character I wanted. Kan-Ra. I downloaded the game, had RAAM as the special, free rotating character at the time, but I wanted Kan-Ra. At the time, nothing else, just Kan-Ra. Fast forward to now, I've since then gotten the entire roster, but I've always been a Kan-Ra main for the past 4 years. Although I thought the season pass model was a bit wacky at the time, the fact that you could purchase the character you wanted, at no particular expense, was absolutely amazing.
Great documentary. K.I. Feeling playing at the end was a nice touch for me. That track, The Way U Move, and Jago's Theme are still on some of my favourite playlists today. K.I. music was always top notch!
Hate you guys! you make me watch this entire video after midnight and I don't even played the game, ever (2013 version). Could't stop watching!! Great work and the game looks awesome, now I have to play it!! Sorry getting to it so so late.
My mom would take my sister and I to blockbuster once a week for them to rent movies and I would rent Killer Instinct for N64 every single time until my family caught on and bought it for me. I grew up going to a boys and girls club where we had a couple arcade cabinets and a Super Nintendo. We would sit in line to play street fighter 2 and the winner got to keep playing. There was a core group of kids that grew up from early elementary school all the way through high school and we grew up with all of these fighting games. Killer Instinct was on of those games that most of of got obsessed with by the time it was released. Just thought I’d share out of the love for this game.
Sorry I’m late, just found something to watch tonight. Just got the 2013 game for a steal. Brings me back to the arcade days. The announcer lives rent free in my head.
I will never forget the amount of joy that Killer Instinct has given over the years. Seeing this video felt like a blast from the past and the legacy it holds will live on for years to come. #playki #killerinstinct
Even better, new people like myself are discovering this game for the first time, and as soon as you understand the depth to the combo system, it ruins all other fighting games for you XD
hearing that lead Combat designer give that example about Jago and his windkick has kinda shown a light on how and what goes on with un-balanced characters.
39:45 Having the music glitch, slow down, and speed up during combos is frikkin incredible. I'm a gamer and music producer on my channel and that kind of detail for the gaming experience made my mouth drop when I heard that. That's sooo amazing 🤯👀
I was a young teen when this came out, and that combo breaker sound could be heard across the entire mall. and i got chills as i was walking into the arcade. everyone going to the book stores getting any info that could give you an edge in this game with combos or finish moves. Players would come in with notebooks and set on the console and have all their new moves in it.
I worked at an arcade when it came out and had access to many of the combos that came witin a plaque in the owners manuals for arcades--it had a lot of combos for a game back then across many characters.I basically mastered Glacius and could beat the game easily after a month and also won some local tournamnets back then at other local arcaeds.
I just got into fighting games a few months ago, and I hadn’t ever heard of Killer Instinct before hearing Sajam talk about it and this documentary. I really want to try out some KI now. This documentary was amazing
I’m a new KI player, only 3 months in, but I absolutely loved this doc. I never knew the finer details of the differences of season or that Double Helix started it. I can’t believe the legacy behind it.
New KI player myself... if more people find out about this game I feel like it could have a resurgence; just look at the interest for older titles like MvC2 when it got netcode.
Man, I loved KI as a kid. I discovered it in a Chinese Carryout with my father in a day I had a Doctor’s appointment. The sound and the look drew me in. When my birthday came up and KI was released on Super Nintendo, I had to have it. The soundtrack that came with it was pure gold. I listen to it as if it were a normal cd. I worked out with it. I used it for my wwf action figures. Great times
This brought so many nostalgic memories for me, not only of KI and nights huddled around an snes, but also of community, and how I built a small fighting game community for Blazblue back in college when nobody cared for fighting games, we were only a couple of guys playing on my ps3, then more and more people started coming until we were known throught the whole faculty, and with the pandemic and whatnot, it's been so long since any of us have gotten together, that hearing so much about how people get together and the passion for fighting games, it just made me want to go back and have a few more matches with those guys. I just wish we had know this was all going to happen so we could have had one last big event, not getting to say goodbye and just be gone for months on end is kinda sad. So I do agree with the final sentiments of this documentary, the most important thing in the end is to get to share that passion, go to your local events, meet people, create bond. In the end the game might die out, but as long as you have your people and you all share this passions for fighting games, something new will eventually come that you can all sink your teeth into.
Bruh this documentary moved me so much I moved my hand to my wallet and bought KI. I can't believe I missed out on something with so much love behind it.
Fun fact: Brute Force ended being the name of a little known SciFi squad based third person shooter for the OG Xbox but developed by a different studio that had nothing to do with Rare.
51:37 When berserker mike said hey i want to get you into the game see if this is something you like thats just so awesome thats like a genuine love for the games that they make and how much love and care he and the crew had for the community and just the game alone nothing but respect still such a good documentary

They messed the whole game ☝
@@gandietaylor3288 You know winners are the one's who figure things out, and don't just bitch about what they don't like. If you don't understand that, you'll never truly succeed at anything.
Honestly that story about how they found Double Helix is probably the only good thing to come out of the Green Lantern movie.
Also Fulgore for smash.
Hopefully with an eyedol assist trophy
Jago and Fulgor from KI gold. i would like the same presrntation of Banjo but this time with the two kk fighters destroying the house
Scorpion and fulgore for smash
@@jacksithlord1301 Scorpion's Final Smash could be a Friendship too instead of a Fatality.
The first KI absolutely did have the audio FX!! When you hear that “CCCCOMBO BREAKER” or “ULTRAAA COMBOOO”, you got so hyped! I need that feeling from fighting games again!
This is perhaps the only time in my life I've been hype for a *documentary* to release. You did not disappoint. Great stuff
Adam Heart - 1:18:42
The best 3 minutes of any fighting game documentary ever.
The words should be framed in every office of a fighting game developer's building...in every competitive fighting, FPS, etc.
This portion of the video should be played on repeat over and over and over again throughout the entire work day until closing hours.
1:36:03 Sounds like Max was moved to tears talking about #BringBackKI. Awesome.
42:30 "Every modern game has to play well online. If you can't do that, you're dead on arrival" THANK YOU
This bit needs clipping and sending to all the other FG game devs
Unless it's an IP well known for the single-player feature.
To the Devs who made KI 2013, thank you so much. You did do the game justice and you should all be damn proud.
I hope that a next gen KI is coming soon.
I would have to argue that
u kidding right?
@@v.valente u mad
@@tepoztlitlacatl634 man im an old fart and have to technically side with you on this. The 2013 version is pretty good. But it can never ever compare to the original killer instinct and what it is and what it was in the day. Its was such a beautiful Gem along with RARE's donkey kong country. I mean man, there will never be another like that but hey theres still alot of passion in games out there
This game need to be in all consoles, its all that need, am in love with KI since 1994
Guys he said he'd drop the definitive edition if it reaches a million views by the end of the month so let's help by commenting and showing our friends !!
My only complaint is that I wish the documentary was longer.
A good KI documentary is like a sandwich
Maybe one day it will be. :)
It's long enough man. Jeez
I agree, the documentary is long enough.
This doc is a really interesting study in organizational behavior, politics in the developer-community relationship, and how to encourage a good development process. I watched this whole doc and I don't even really play fighting games.
i havent played in decades but my love for games and art and community definitely brought me to watch this whole thing
This vid is a study on why managers should take a hands off approach and just let creative geniuses do their thing.
That's the point of people who watch tv. They do not do anything. Are just spectators.
It's why it's mistake if you say people are into sports; they are into watching sports on tv. As watching tv is not a sport or an activity.
These guys MADE my childhood... still playing KI once in a while!... and still know the combo's 😉
So moral of the story, when something is made with passion, things turn out great.
soooommmetttiiimmmmess
These people are brilliant! Wow man there is some SERIOUS detail and passion to make these masterpieces. Talk about loving what you do
The moral of the story:
Play KI whenever you have the chance, you won't regret it...

The game sucks nowadays.
@Mr.Tweezy007 It does.
If they play their cards right they can be bigger then mk. some stuff as to change marketing would have to be on point.
@@thecriticalbastardarchive8035 nah, the game still plays perfectly. I just wish more people would play
@@SUPERLINKX2 No, the game has many issues, one of the reasons why more people won't play it.
KI is one of the best fighting games and criminally underrated!
I'm not even all the way through this doc, and there are so many golden nuggets of wisdom about the development and attitude around fighting games that I think the ENTIRE FGC could do with learning. Adam Heart says some really amazing things throughout the entirety of this piece. Every person who has ever complained about game balancing on Twitter, and every person who considers themselves a member of the FGC really owes it to themselves to watch this doc, especially 1:19:30
UPDATE: having finished the doc, this game looks sick, I love the dev philosophy, and the game looks rad as hell! I've never touched this game, but I'm definitely picking it up! #BringBackKI
incredible work good sir! Thank you for all of your quality FGC docs!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you! Was looking for the specific part you timestamped, so thank you for that.
Wow, I’m only 10 min in, don’t know anything about the recent KI, and I am hooked. Thank you for creating this 👏✨
Figuring out the disease and not just focusing on the symptoms. That was my favourite part. Great minds on this project. Well done video.
Wow, just hearing him explain that combo from World Heroes tells you that he really does play them fightin' games. Cool guy.
You can really feel the passion all of them have towards ki
What's your GT. I'm nSx Danzino a Kan Ra main.
Great documentary. K.I. Feeling playing at the end was a nice touch for me. That track, The Way U Move, and Jago's Theme are still on some of my favourite playlists today. K.I. music was always top notch!
I remember when me and my bros got the SNES Killer Instinct bundle when we were kids...changed my life.
Shouldn’t have interviewed Sajam before lunch! lol
"So sajam, what do you think of KI?"
*sajam internally* : mmmmmm sandwiches.
You’re comment is way better than mine.
You nailed it lol!

Hate you guys! you make me watch this entire video after midnight and I don't even played the game, ever (2013 version). Could't stop watching!! Great work and the game looks awesome, now I have to play it!! Sorry getting to it so so late.
This. I picked it up for PC after seeing this and it was worth it!
Just thought I’d share out of the love for this game.
the part at @1:19:17 where Adam talks about the Jago windkick change. Holy shit. One of the most amazing mic drops I've ever seen.
That was interesting ! Thanks for the heads up
Sorry I’m late, just found something to watch tonight. Just got the 2013 game for a steal. Brings me back to the arcade days. The announcer lives rent free in my head.
This was awesome. I headed straight to Steam after watching this. Thanks to all involved in making it!
This is on Steam?
I will never forget the amount of joy that Killer Instinct has given over the years. Seeing this video felt like a blast from the past and the legacy it holds will live on for years to come.

Even better, new people like myself are discovering this game for the first time, and as soon as you understand the depth to the combo system, it ruins all other fighting games for you XD
@@naejimba i feel you on that, other fighting games feel quite from KI but it's that memorable that it keeps back a lot of players back to enjoy from
The sandwich comparison is golden! That really explains the combo system vs an opponent wonderfully.
That shit blew my mind hearing it and I laughed my ass off 🤣
WOOOOW !The Most Amaaaazing Documentary ever seen about Killer Instinct
hearing that lead Combat designer give that example about Jago and his windkick has kinda shown a light on how and what goes on with un-balanced characters.
39:45 Having the music glitch, slow down, and speed up during combos is frikkin incredible. I'm a gamer and music producer on my channel and that kind of detail for the gaming experience made my mouth drop when I heard that. That's sooo amazing 🤯👀
“Commentator and rollback netcode advocate” amazing 😂
I honestly had to pause so I could laugh for a solid minute.
I keep to short vids, nothing over 20 mns. This was worth every second
This game is the reason I love fighting games.
Is is just me or the guy that invented killer instinct has the same energy as Maxmillian Dood?
well max did work on killer instinct
@Jonathan Soko That's working on KI dood. Part of marketing.
Random fact: The Klobb gun in Goldeneye 007 was named after Ken Lobb.
Knil wasn’t Max responsible for the creation of Hisako?
Jonathan Soko He was involved with marketing. Therefore, he did work for the game.
I just got into fighting games a few months ago, and I hadn’t ever heard of Killer Instinct before hearing Sajam talk about it and this documentary. I really want to try out some KI now. This documentary was amazing
Cannot remember the last time I've been this excited to watch an FGC doc. Thanks for all your hard work on this!
Sajam is a legend for the sandwich analogy lol.
I'll NEVER forget the 1'st time I heard "ultra Ultra ULTRA!!" Such a great game and series
Kkkiiiiiinnnnnggggg combo!
but its ULTRA ULTra ultra...
I was skeptical about this, but this was an enthralling and highly inspirational retrospective. Thanks so much for this.
I remembered playing Killer Instinct on the SNES when it first released. To me, it was right up there and on par with Mortal Kombat.
Well above MK
It was like MK but a REAL fighter. Not just gimmicks:) The controls were much more responsive no clunky delay like in MK.
Yes I had both, this one impressed me way more! The whole vibe, I was immersed.
The Season 2 trailer had me in tears when it first came out. I'll never forget watching that over and over again.
dude, I friggin' LOVE this channel!
what did we do to deserve to watch this for free!? I'm absolutely blown away by the quality of your content.
Great times
Just finished the documentary. Absolutely amazed by the quality and loved the passion from the developers, players, and TOs
Thank you to everyone in involved in the making of this. Really amazing watch. 10/10. #BringBackKI #playki
Fantastic documentary. Thanks for putting it together and dropping it on TH-cam.
Well said. Communities centered around a game should strive to be as positive as possible while sharing their passion for these games.
Bruh this documentary moved me so much I moved my hand to my wallet and bought KI. I can't believe I missed out on something with so much love behind it.
