  • Have you ever wondered if you’re using your Haas side-mount tool changer as efficiently as possible? In this Tip of the Day, Mark explains how to define large and heavy tools, and shows how to load them properly, and designate them in the control to avoid a collision. Be sure to watch all the way to the end, where Mark demonstrates a cool trick for re-positioning tools within the carousel - without removing any tools!

    So glad to have learned that you can use P##->ATC FWD to pull a certain pocket. Thanks!

    As a side note, if you need (2) empty pockets in the carousel between two Large tools, instead of the standard one empty pocket, we will need to designate the tools as XL Extra Large. On an NGC machine we can contact our HFO to get this "Extra Large" special configuration. On Classic Haas Controls, we would enable Parameter 315 Bit 3 "EXTRA-LARGE TOOLS" to get these extra pockets.

    Your videos are wonderful. Through a strange job/circumstances I ended up becoming a self taught machinist thanks to this channel and NYCCNC and that led to me having to learn to run a Haas. No longer at that job and am currently trying to start a company, I look forward to the day when I’m doing well enough to afford my own Haas

    I program all my machines with every other tool pocket, ie-2,4,6,8,10 etc. This avoids tools hitting each other. I only used adjecnt pockets if need the pockets. And this method helps distribute tool weight around the carousel.

    I used something simular but in mdi and in code to get as many empty pockets next to each other to load up my tools quicker by calling the loaded pockets with a t number and the empty pocket with the p number after each other... And i would run this mdi program when i was getting my tools ready...
    But that might only work if you use the same number for the same tool every time... I would also load drills before mills so you can probe the drills while getting the mills ready and pre mesured

    Thanks for the great video, Mark. You made getting 3 empty pockets next to each other very understandable. Normally we have our Renishaw Probe in T41 or our +1. I emptied our tool carousel and resequenced the carousel. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how to get the probe back in 41 and not lose a tool. Can you enlighten me? Thanks (VF4 NGC)

    When using a large tool does the machine/holder still support +1 tool. In other words will it put a normal size tool into the large slot while the large tool is in the spindle?

  • @zodiaceng
    @zodiaceng 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    For all of us with UTC's, we really need a way to renumber pockets like on SMTC. Being stuck with only 1-20 is severely handicapping us with large tool libraries.

  • @Anthony-VF2SS
    @Anthony-VF2SS ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I had a question about older haas mills with side mounts. I have a 2005 VF2SS and can't seem to input a number larger than 25 into the pocket table since this mill has a 24+1 smtc. Is there a setting that I have to enable to utilize the 200 tool offsets that enabled with setting 90? Thank you.

  • @OriginalJetForMe
    @OriginalJetForMe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I'm surprised you don't make a specific decal for each machine, so the user doesn't have to find the right size. In addition, it should show the value right on the diagram, rather than in a table one has to consult. Finally, why not have the software just take parameters for each new tool including the max diameter, and let it sort it out for the specific machine?

    Hi, Does anyone know how to avoid a double tool change? the problem is my T1 is a 4" face mill, T2 is a 3/8" cutter and my T4 is a 1/4" drill. The cycle ends with T3 and when I start a new cycle it changes the tool to T1 but puts T3 in the designated T1 pocket, so when changing to T2, the machine first puts on T3 in the spindle because it is in T1 pocket and then changes it to T2, losing a lot of time in the process. How can I avoid this??

    This will be extremely handy to know; we've got three machines at work with the advanced control, as well as five more with both types of legacy control's (and that's just in the mill department!!!). I've been preaching about this video series for a couple of years now, but most of the guys at work couldn't care less (until they get into trouble; then they want help).

    What’s the XL key? Extra large? As in there can’t even be another large tool 2 tools down?

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Chad - On some older versions of software we set Parameter 315:3 to a “1” to set Large tools as XL. This forces the control to leave two empty spaces between Large tools, instead of one - like you describe. This “XL” feature hasn’t been released on a Next Gen control (the field is greyed-out), but we still have a simple solution. We can set the tools as “L” Large (see video), and then clear any adjacent pockets we want to on the Tool Table by highlighting them, entering [0], and pressing Enter. This will Clear those tool pockets, and they won’t be used again. Also, if I ever broke a carousel pocket somehow, I could “zero” it out in this same way, and the control would know to never use that pocket. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    Is their a way to set an automatic home position when changing large tools so you dont crash into a fixture?

    • @JackS425
      @JackS425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IDK on the classic control but on the NGC go to user positions in the settings and then I think its called tool change mid position. you can move the machine where you want with handle jog and then set it.

    Is there a way to designate a tool as hand load only so it won't try to put it away and let me load the spindle empty?

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael - For something like that, I’d create my own custom M-Code. You can write your own “M200” (or whatever number you’d like) that would automatically switch to an empty pocket, position the spindle, and wait for the operator to press a button to continue. Check out the Alias M video. th-cam.com/video/HZiJEt0bMA4/w-d-xo.html
      . People will build their own “Wine Rack” tool holders, that mount on the tables as well, they’ll position the spindle over the tool and use an M82/M86 to clamp/unclamp. Contact your local dealer for help. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Haas Control will take care of all of this, in the background. In this case the machine would automatically do a double tool change to guarantee that your designated Large tool (your shell mill) is always surrounded by empty pockets. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

      We just bought a vf5 with a 30 + 1 tool changer Servo driven and it's so fast compared to our 40 plus 1 tool changer which is Cam driven. We are still getting used to the next-gen control but I already like it better than the old one. Except for the probing it would be nice if day used hotkeys such as numbers to indicate which probing cycle you would like to use for example for the single surface I just hit page down and then up twice but it would be nice to just hit the number 8 and then down
      Maybe that will be an update
