There was companies that made ventilators and had ventilators ready to go…yet they chose to award the contract to a company that has never made a medical device, who actually make hoovers. How many ventilators did Dyson actually deliver? I’ll let you do that research, as a guide it’s between 0 and 0

At the time these dodgy deals were happening, there were UK companies that actually produce PPE (and other medical equipment) reaching out to the government, saying that if the government/NHS placed orders with them, they would prioritise them over their customers overseas, but they were ignored.

    • @alexbeardmore3588

There were times when I and others in the NHS had to decide whether to wear the clearly substandard PPE or not wear any PPE. This is before the vaccine.
Some NHS workers died. I'm not saying Mone killed them ....

I am confused, maybe you could help me understand.....
Somebody please explain to me why so many under educated Brexit Brits seem so upset about a slack tart underwear model/stripper/slapper, taking vast sums of money away from the NHS which could have been used otherwise, to supply PPE that would have prevented the deaths of 20,000 front line health care workers, many of them nurses. Surely clapping was enough. It was anounced before the 2019 election that Johnson would "under no circumstances increase the pay of nurses as reducing tax would instead be the priority"
The same general public that voted to kill the nurses and keep them in abject poverty, are now pissed off because a failed hooker has nicked a few million quid from thier childrens future.
      What's wrong with that?@@alexbeardmore3588

100% this. I work for a manufacturer of medical equipment (not PPE though), we reached out to the government during the pandemic through their official channels and offered priority choice of what was essentially a 1000 bed hospital's worth of infrastructure & equipment and heard absolutely nothing back. So we shipped it off to its original destination across the globe. Meanwhile the TV was full of Dyson inventing nonsense ventilator and other craziness.

13:15 in answer to your question Ava - why didn’t they ask factories who make the stuff.
On LBC a NHS supplier called in to complain that they supplied NHS until Covid when the buyers were unable to buy as the Government had taken control.
They had warehouses full of PPE and were offering it at pre-Covid prices but they wouldn’t call him back.
In the end they sold it all to the French and Irish governments.
Clearly, too many people getting too rich to worry about what’s value for money.

What I want to understand is why (working for a company who is involved in finance) I and all my colleagues must do a yearly training course to make sure we understand how perception of corruption is corruption and we must follow clearly defined rules.

There are supposed to be government procurement rules, but this government are experts in skirting the rules, and then they threw them out the window during COVID. This has already been discussed at length during the COVID enquiry and will be a big topic of its findings. It basically seems like the health department was functioning correctly, but the Health Secretary was more interested in placating his fellow Cabinet members and not being seen to be making a fuss (in his testimony he tried to claim he was trying hard but not succeeding, but this seems unlikely given the evidence). Nobody at the height of government was interested until it was a huge problem.

Plans exist for a number of eventualities including the potentially catastrophic. They can be reviewed and updated so that they are ready if and when the relevant occasion should arise. They are available to every government whatever the hue from the moment it takes office. A plan existed for managing the outbreak of disease. In the case of C-19 the plan was put aside in favour of following (or attempting to follow) what was fashionable among countries that had been exposed to the disease before it reached the UK. The government was unwilling to buck the trend but instead to conform, fearing unpopularity and believing there to be safety in numbers irrespective of the outcome.

      1) not readily transmissible by air
      (That died quickly)
      2) no spread by asymptomatic cases
      Aged like milk
      3) children not an important source
      Well...
An unknown respiratory virus should always be treated as if it is transmitted readily via air, by asymptomatics and children until proven otherwise.

While its not a crime to profit from a crisis its incredibly untasteful and I agree she is being used as a current example, though many companies will have made plenty out of the crisis. Its pretty obvious this is a massive conflict of interest and they intentionally lied and used threats to try to conceal this conflict of interest. If you are going to profit from a crisis like this you should expect the public response to be negative and that's the choice they get to make. The fact that they sit funnelling their money through the Isle of Man, refusing to accept that she is to benefit from the money they made is beyond me. It speaks the the entitlement of the current ruling class that they cant even see their corruption and trading on their political access.

At the time of the PPE crisis, the Govt/Cabinet Office opened the door wide for this kind of nepotism, insider dealing and corruption to the Old Boy Network. Mone may well be a nasty profiteering individial, but its hardly surprising she and her husband took advantage of such an open door. The Govt may well be looking to get their money back, but its their purchasing policies that were at fault just as much, if not more, than the behaviour of Mone.
The other "question" that sticks in my mind is the one about her lying about her involvement. I'm in fits of laughter at the moral outrage of journalists, podcasters, media and indeed the whole spectrum of the press world who find it appaling and indefensible that someone might lie to them. This is the same press or media types who hype, sensationalise, selectively quote, omit context, or simply downright lie themselves in order to suit their master's political, social or moral agendas. Yup, makes me laugh!
The key point in all of this outrage is simply about whether the PPE supplied by Mone/Barrowman's company met the contractual specifications. If it didn't, the company should be sued, along with all the other companies who took sums of money for PPE yet failed to deliver.

Of the £65m, £45.8m went into the Warren Trust and then from there into the personal bank account of Doug Barrowman. Of that, £28.8m went into the Keristal Trust (beneficiaries Michelle Mone and her children).
‘The HSBC report states that smaller sums - ranging from £5,000 to £200,000 - originating from PPE Medpro profits were passed to some employees of the Knox Group, Barrowman’s financial services firm, who were involved in the PPE business. According to the report, one of those employees told the bank the transfers were “gifts”.’

True. Also, the NHS didn't just need sterile gowns. Non-sterile had their place too. What we didn't need were gowns that stank of chemicals hard enough to make me gag - I can actually smell that shit again just thinking about it. Some of the gowns had insects embedded in the plastic - no exaggeration.
There were times when we were so short of PPE in the north east we relied on a donation from the Nissan factory.
Michelle Mone doesn't know why what she and her husband did was utterly, indefensibly wrong. That's why she's saying what she is to the media. Clueless.

@jameslockwood1958 I have seen some good one to one interviews, e.g. Ian Hislop.
It seems that when they sit down together, they forget they have a purpose, an audience to serve and they're no longer in the student's bar at university.
I'm currently reading the autobiography of Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath's bassist. It covers the most drug ravaged periods of the band's career. I got more of a sense of purpose and coherence from this sorry tale than I did from this so-called pod cast.
