Young people still hate the Tories, Just Stop Oil take on the rugby and the Ely riots | Pubcast #5

  • On this week's Pubcast we're looking into the Ely riots, what led to the unrest and how the police have yet again placed themselves firmly in the crosshairs of public outrage.
    We then take another dip into the world of Just Stop Oil, after they brought the Premiership final at Twickenham to a standstill over the weekend.
    Finally, we reflect on the concerns coming from CCHQ that millennials are not flocking to the Conservatives in their old age. We try to work out how the Tories have only just realised this.
    Camera: Kesia Evans & Joel Dunn-Wilson

    Just to state the obvious, Ava is an educated articulate white woman so a crime perpetrated against her is obviously treated differently to, say, a black kid in lambeth. Not to say white women are not victims of bad policing (sarah everard) but the explanation of her positive experience is definitely not because one police force is good and the other is bad - the underlying systemic issue is related to the nature of policing as an institution, not the Met just being mean for no reason

      Totally right. I think the takeaway from that is that they know how to police well and when they don't it's nothing but a choice. When you really think about that it's so disgusting.

    It's the lying that infuriates, and the Tories wonder why people hate them, serial liars though they be. Millennials have been shafted by the Tories, so no surprise they are dumping them. In 1975 when I worked at a service station (Birch) on the night shift, there was a raid on the petrol station. The young chap on duty - who was of course already in shock - was taken to the police station and accused of collusion in the crime. From his account, he was physically mistreated. I've never trusted a policeman since, even though now I'm a middle-class retiree who is what they call 'socially conservative' and very law-abiding. There must be scope for financial instruments that allow you to get on the property ladder without a deposit.

    My friend was pulled over by the police "for speeding". My friend said that he was conscious of the speed limit as it was close to his house, and said, respectfully that they were mistaken. "Are you trying to be clever" was the reply from the policeman. He then said "And you're not wearing your seatbelt". My friend was wearing his seatbelt, and asked what was the policeman talking about. "Well, who is the judge gonna believe : me or you" was the policeman's response, and wrote up a ticket for speeding and not wearing a seatbelt. My friend had to pay the fine.

    I'm from Merseyside and recently my home was broken into and my motorbike was stolen. The house was turned inside out by the thief looking for keys and money was stolen which we were saving up for our daughter.
    The Merseyside police were SUPER kind, very thorough and even helped us to sort out insurance claims etc (basically we left back door unlocked, the copper broke the lock for us, then called locksmith so that we could claim for the damage and loss of money). He didn't need to do that and it would probably have gotten him in trouble if he was found out.
    I think that some people have good experience and others have bad. London Met seems to be a very negatively represented organisation.

      It helps that Merseyside and Staffs have less people there too, so it's more community focused
      Equally, I live in a very low population density area BUT I still come under the "Greater Manchester police" banner which means you just don't get that community policing.

      In the nicest possible way, you like the police as they helped you commit Insurance fraud (paid for by all the other policy holders who will now pay higher rates so not a victimless crime)?
      Interesting ethics.
      So are there other crimes you feel it is acceptable for the police to facilitate?

    • @shtarpark7938
      @shtarpark7938 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Boghopper9999 To be fair, insurance is a bit of a racket in the first place, and the whole 'but premiums have to rise because of fraud' thing is something of a red herring to distract from the fact that the premiums are priced to make a handsome profit for shareholders. And whilst I don't know the exact circumstances here, if someone who's been paying for insurance has a moment of forgetfulness...the kind of thing that any of us are capable of...it would seem an injustice to punish them further for that mistake; the crime was committed by the person who stole the stuff.
      Ethics is a complicated subject, and I can see reasonable arguments against my position, but conflating what is legal with what is ethical is often a mistake.

      @zoranblackie5921 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had good experiences working with Merseyside Police colleagues, we've been able (NHS and local VSE orgs) to use their proceeds of crime fund (assets of criminals and drug dealers) to invest in neighbourhood community projects (Over 200k in Croxteth, Speke, Dovecot, Old Swan etc). The ones I speak to consider Suella's protest laws as a 'massive distraction' taking officers away from community policing.

    • @TuntunGamer
      @TuntunGamer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Boghopper9999 I have had good experience with the police throughout my adult life tbh. Not that there have been many times where we have crossed paths. I also know of people who have had mainly positive experience locally woth police.
      I understand your point about the insurance, but to reiterate, I didn't ask for him to help but I think he could see that my girlfriend was visibly extremely stressed out by what had happened. Fortunately we were out of the house and our daughter was at my parents. The garage door was locked and typically we are always vigilant with the rear door into the house also, so it didn't feel like cheating the system. I was just trying to make the point that, this copper who didn't know us, who had no reason to help us personally other than to take statements, went out of his way to help make us feel slightly less assaulted.
      I'm not sure if you have ever had somebody enter your house without your consent, or literally empty every cupboard and drawer, even take a drink from the fridge while he was looting and I hope you never do. I was happy the copper helped us and if I was in his situation, I would like to think I would help people too.

    A good friend is nowadays a handyman, but in his time has served in the Army, driven an HGV, risen from working on the shopfloor to managing the factory, and set up and run his own business. Some years ago, he was working on a flat when the buildings manager (who he knew) came in and asked for help. He and a pair of police officers had been called to another flat whose occupant hadn't been seen for several days; there were full milk bottles outside the door, and so on. On being assured he had permission, he fetched a crowbar and jemmied the door. The old man had clearly been dead for several days, and had half-fallen out of bed, revealing a stash of £20 and £50 notes spilling out from under the mattress.
    A few days later, he ran into the buildings manager again.
    "How much money do you think was there?"
    "No idea. £5,000 or £10,000?"
    "The police report said £500."
    West Midlands.

    When it comes to police with criminal records - the only suitable explanation is either clannishness, or far more widespread criminality than is currently known. If criminal officers are so rare, the force should have no problem with the notion of dropping any officer when they're caught in criminal acts. Either they don't want to expel 'their own' on principle, or that would discount too many officers.

    There will still be a core of young people who will be conservative because they are born in to wealth and have benefited from the current systems. The torries are very good at getting their vote out.
    I thnk most of the analysis coming from the left about people not getting more conservative as they get older is correct. Why would people vote for a party if they're not offereing them anything or representing their interests.
    What would be really interesting would be if there was any indication that it was driving younger people towards labour or if it was just making them even more disenfranchised.

    Ah, but you forgot the boomers who increasingly end up in nursing homes and to get a decent level of care (which is still indecent in the real world), have to sell their house and milk their accounts dry to pay for it, leaving bugger all in inheritance for millennials.

    When you make an error of judgement, as a journalist, what is the outcome?
    When a police officer, a surgeon, a social worker, a probation officer, a prison officer, a nurse or an MP makes an error of judgement, what is the outcome?

      Depends on the severity of the fuck up. A journalists fuck up can severely malign a persons character. They all can "ruin" someone's life rather dramatically. Unless you are asking about accountability?

    Hmmm, extinction rebelión need to give their people a master class in media management.
    They need to stop putting people that look like hippies in interviews and letting them talk about a climate genocide.
    Sorry to break it to them, nobody cares about a genocide untill you can put a camera Infront of a pile of bodies with Bono or Bob Geldof on hand singing a catchy tune.
    Get them in an interview giving clear snappy arguments about how we already throw billions at oil companies to extract a resource we have no control over the global price of and required sending Bobbo and Chazza off to a middle eastern dictatorship to maintain the dominance of a cartel.
    The best piece of just stop oil press I've seen was on Country File, yes the BBC on a Sunday night.
    They were in Scotland talking oil industry subsidies. The extinction rebelión person gave a great example of how stupid the system is.
    It's a windy Rainey day in nowhere ville Scotland. They stood next to a pipe line coming to shore from the oil fields.
    The extinction rebelión rep points out to sea and said "if shell put a wind turbine here and ran a cable out to an oil rig. They can get all the construction costs paid. On the other hand, if they built a wind turbine here and ran a cable to that village, he points to a postcard perfect seaside village. Shell or whoever built it would need to fund the project with 0 help.

    I love PoliticsJOE but the only thing that concerns me about it is that their commentary is in fact indicative of their generation. In that they love to comment but that is as far as it goes. Action does speak louder than words and this is something lacking in British society more now than ever. Their whole generation are being put upon and the retort has been a trending meme.

    1995-1997 are generational cuspers aka boomer zoomers. Our primary school years were pretty much consistent with millennials but our secondary school years were more similar to gen Z. All the stuff that came out in like 2005-2008 that affected childhood experiences in a big way happened right as we started secondary school - smartphones, Facebook, TH-cam, Xbox Live etc. It was the era before parents and schools had any oversight over social media so tons of shitposts on Facebook, rampant cyber bullying, ridiculously toxic call of duty lobbies, etc.
    Lots of streamers and influencers are right in that age bracket, definitely a unique experience and perspective on technology.
