- Yugioh cards come in various froms. We all know Monsters, Spells, and Traps, but then there are the subset of those cards. For spells, one type is Equip. Aesthetically, they are meant to look like items you'd equip to your monster for battle, like a sword or armor, but as they evolved, they went beyond your standard tools for battle and could get pretty creative, both in the positive and negative direction. We are looking at the weirdest equip spells, whether it's because of their effect, appearance, or they just seem inconvenient to physically equip. I'm also joined by the cohost gang of Corgian, Sam from Dungeon Dive Bar, Professor Oats, SyzygySolo, and Judgment Meter.

You missed a fun little bit on Violet Crystal
When it came out in the TCG, there were no Zombie monsters in the game yet
That is hilarious and totally on brand for something we'd point out. However, The 13th Grave was in the first set, so there was one zombie. Still, there were very few monsters compatible with the crystal at the time.

13th Grave came out in the Theatrrical Release box on 03/06/1999 when Violet Crystal came out a month earlier in Volume 1 on 02/04 of the same year

If we go back a bit, you can squeeze two more in their with the pendulum zones
that was way until yu gi oh forbidden memories 2002 which made equip card broken and op like megamorph and sword of dark destruction both card give a monster 1000 extra atk pionts

Aqua makes sense, either because they’re boats or because they’re made of sea creatures.
For fire… IDK exactly. You cook the rice with boiling water, so there’s that. They also are war ships so they presumably have big hot engines

I just thought that was a second treeborn frog, but you're right! I see the light around the frog bait. That's clever. I'll bring that up in Honorable Mentions next time if people want to see the Volume 2.

I run with Double Edged Sword with Amazoness Swordswoman on Master Duel and it literally doubles the damage to your opponent since it is Battle Damage and her effect makes your opponent take all the battle damage so it does not go boom if it is over 2000 damage when you take 0 damage.
Funny how Omega Googles is just The Inexperienced Spy but worse and being worse than that is a very big oof.

There is one interesting interaction with double edged sword that I thought of, Gravekeepers vassal's effect is that any battle damage it inflicts is treated as effect damage, and since its effect damage it avoids both of the downsides.
If the yugioh card wiki can vouch for this, THEN your a genius for reading the fine print & using it as a loophole.

I liked Legendary Ebon Steed and Ancient Gear Tank being an Equip that the Monster rides on instead of just being a sword or something they would hold.

Even better. The word “Yomigaeru”
means “to resurrect”. It’s made up for the words “Yomi” and a word meaning “to return”. But change the way it’s spelled just a bit, and you can write the “Gaeru” part to mean “Frog”.
So he’s an Underworld Frog, but also a Reviver.
That whole bit with double-edged sword was incredible lmao
The silliness is even higher because in Japan they are translated more directly to "Gem Beast." That why the omage archtype to both them and the Elemental Heros is called the "Gem Knights." That means the issue was not just caused by them changing the name of Amathyst to Violete Crystal here but also choosing to rename them Crystal Beasts after. It could have even been a better choice if they didn't do that since it would prevent any confusion with the equip card being for Amethyst Cat. The true weirdness was to rename the Gem Beasts into Crystal Beasts for seemingly no reason..whats even weirder is that it's inaccurate. Not all the Crystral Beasts are crystals. Amber Mamoth is petrified resin. A gemstone is a material that is cut and polished for ornamental use like in jewelry, so it works, but a crystal is a naturally formed mineral in a specific way that Amber doesn't meet the qualifications for. Amthethyst typically is a violete crystal, so it's really just a lamens description of the stone that works. I am a huge fan and player of the C.B.s but have to admit the name chnage was freaking weird. The silver lining really is me getting to say Carbuncle:killer Captian of the Cystral Beasts! Lol He charges out onto the field with a squeak and all the others in hiding rush rejuvenated to his side! Gotta love the cute, cuddly crystal killer captian, eh J.M.? 😁🥰
Also..they came out with a GOLD themed zombie archtype already. Lol
Amber may not be a crystal, but Cobalt IS a crystalline metal, yet not a gem, so the name doesn't work for all members involved regardless

I've used Horn of Light in my OG deck back in the day. I had special reasons for it. Nobody expected a low level monster with a high defense, equipped with Defense increasing cards such as Horn of Light, and then using Shield & Sword for a lvl 4 Monster having 3k+ ATK. It switches the Original ATK & DEF of the card of course, but that was besides the point as it didn't necessarily matter. But the fact that I've used Horn of Light to boost its DEF to make sure nobody killed it in Defense mode after my turn ended it helped in some cases.
As a Mikanko player, you NEVER equip DE Sword to your Mikankos. You give it to a opponent's monster so they take full damage. Combine this with cards that tribute like Kaijus/lava golem if you want OTK potential.

I like how people just starting to use Mikanko's didn't have the thought usually to just... Put the stuff like Double Edge Sword on their Mikanko because they would usually just throw it on a Kaiju or something they summoned to their opponents field. Though that trick of using Mayowashi to get one of the 3 star girls back into hand equipped with it with Ohime is something I never thought of so thanks for that tech.
I also will probably be running Ring of Mangnatism to draw my opponents monster to my Mikanko for attacks because I'm also currently trying to use Flame Swordsman support with the deck do it being equip based, Ha-Re is a Fire Warrior so she has synergy with the cards and using Flame Swords Realm to tribute one of the girls or a monster I stole with Mirror to just summon out a beat stick of a Flame Swordsman is fun. Oh, and the fusion spell being an equip is also fun.
Ring of Magnetism is a funny setup. Mikanko have enabled so many lesser equip cards from the old days, so I support their endeavors, even if they OTK me after summoning Lava Golem on me.
Yugioh has really gone way over my head since the early GX days but hey, your explanations are fun and if I was still playing I would totally be trying some of these random things.
Shaddolls got their own equip spell that was just Scroll of Bewitchment spliced with Polymerization. And it's probably my favorite spell they use.
Awesome to see the whole crew back for a new Yugioh top ten list! Also glad you mentioned Double Edged Swords great synergy with Mikanko, but another great way to use it is equipping it to your opponents monsters to make them even bigger so you can run into them for massive damage
I had never before heard of Frozen Fitzgerald, but now it is one of my favorite cards due to just the name.
It was also in the 5Ds anime if you ever want to hear a villain dramatically say "Frozen Fitzgerald."

For Malevolent Nuzzler: to Nuzzle just means to stroke your cheek on something or someone
I think the Idea for double edged sword is that you equip it on an opponents monster and then run into it with a little chump to do a shitload of damage.
But it’s even better with Mikanko, as all the damage is directed at the opponent instead.
I need to tell you all a story: A story of a master of equip spells that predates all but the most primordial archetypes, that would return decades after an initial period of success in a trying time.
Once upon a time, it was decided that the monthly Master Duel festival would be the "Extra Zero Festival" no extra deck, excluding pendulums that wound up there after the duel started.
Addmittedly, a bit bland at first glance.
But it got worse. For you see, Floowandereze had just released in MD.
The birds wreaked havoc, and everyone was very bored as the birds proceeded to combo off on both turns.
Those that refused to play Floo could see the festival rewards slipping away.
Until: A hero decended
Out of retirement, last seen in GOAT FORMAT, our champion Armed Samurai Ben Kei emerged, bringing Mataza, Wattwoodpecker, Hayabusa Knight, going second staples, and the best generic attack boosting equip spells that 24 years of Yu-Gi-Oh had to offer alongside him.
Could they beat the birds? Sometimes, actually, yes, the also recently released Adventure Token cards served as a strong companion piece.
But you didn't have to.
It was faster, and exponentially more fun to scoop in the face of the birds and play like 5 games in the time a Floo match would have taken.
Ben Kei and company saved the Extra Zero festival.

As far as investment, Ben Kei OTK demanded nothing more of the player than staples they should already have.
If you didn't have a good deck for a given festival, and were sick of the loaners, Ben Kei was there.
*IT GOT TO A POINT WHERE THEY STARTED PUTTING BEN KEI ON THE FESTIVAL BANLISTS*
What's funny is, by that point, the tale was told. Different sorts of festivals emerged, the Adventure Token package had been hit with limits, and so too had the draw Pots, per MD's manhunt on Floo players. A divine comedy that while Ben Kei's power would diminish, he could look on knowing that the foe that he emerged to thwart was profoundly crippled.
Since the second golden age of Ben Kei, many more structure decks (including a Dark Magician one) and (generally) superior festival loaners decks have been made available in Master Duel. As such, even when Ben Kei is available, we need not disturb the veteran.
Ben Kei's time came, went, unexpectedly resumed, and petered out again, and it was hysterical to see play out.
When I first started playing yugioh and didn't understand how any of the cards worked, I loved trial of the princess because of the artwork. I just thought it was really funny

Pikeru and Curran need to be their own archetype, we recently had an Exodia related archetype so why not giving a chance to the princess?
I could totally see Konami just dropping some random Pikeru and Curran retrains/archetypes in a random set. Any monsters with an ounce of nostalgia is always a possibility for eventual support.
Scroll of Bewitchment was used with the old Charmers back in the day.
After the Charmer gains control of the opponents monster, the Charmer player would tribute the Charmer and the stolen Monster, to summon the 1850Atk version of that specific Charmer straight out of the deck, that would also gain piercing battle damage, if summoned this way.
Malevolent should have always had a monster counterpart imo. A Maha Vailo retrain including that adds her to that deck (I know there are two Maha already).
in two frogs with a sting, the thing Ronin Toadin is grabbing is a Treeborn Frog decoy, you can see the outline of the cutout, also, Treeborn Frog is looking at them being dramatic

Yes, that is typically what you do, but he was just showcasing what I was talking about at the pace I was talking about it so the full combo I did next made more sense.

Another use for Scroll of Bewitchment is to change a monster's attribute to match the attribute of a Charmer monster you control so that you can special summon that Charmer's Familiar-Possessed form.
Before Mikanko, there was Amazoness Swordswoman. I love that card. Works with Double-Edged Swordswoman too.
Additional counterpart to Malevolent Nuzzler and Horn of Light: Sword of the Deep Seated. Does both ATK and DEF at 500, and it also goes back to the top of the deck. At the cost of no LP cost, it is a mandatory effect and happens any time it goes to the GY, if I recall correctly.
Equip spell cards without the effects of increase and decrease ATK, DEF or LP in either player are weird. Like Xyz or Sychro monsters without effects
Demon's Kiss? Nah, son. That's "Akuma". Though, it would have been cool if this had been a daemon and got pulled into the archetype.

Prevention Star could work with the Karakuri archetype. The Karakuri monsters gimmick is that they must attack each turn and immediately afterwards they change to defense position. Support cards are based around bonus effects happening when monsters change their battle position. Prevention Star's effect would fit in with those... although that wouldn't make it good.
That secret tech in Mikanko using Double-Edged Sword?! Kinda got me wanting to build Mikanko in MD with it!
Yep. It’s pretty much a staple in the deck. Can even equip it to one of your own mikanko monsters to deal 4000 damage on an empty field.
Hey, I once had the idea to combine Omega Goggles with Karakuris in order to avoid their "must attack" caveat.
Akuma no Kuchizuke (Kiss of a Demon) OR Malevolent Nuzzler
My take is that the woman being depicted is an Akuma (demon). She has magical powers and through intimacy (kissing, nuzzling, etc) she influences a person with malicious intent. Enchanting the person into being more aggressive. Thus increasing ATK power.
In short, she’s a troublemaker.
Honestly I'd watch a Top 10 Toad/Frog Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh video.

Scroll of bewitchment can be useful if a monster on your field has lightning blade equipped & you used scroll of bewitchment on an opponent's monster to make it a water attribute to weaken it.
I thought one of the new fusion spells they put for flames swordsman's archetypes as an equips was a neat idea. It hits on being different an a smaller way that doesn't rattle the cage as much of the other changes of the game seem to have done over the last few years.

Want an interesting candidate for Double-Edged Sword? Try "Gravekeeper's Vassal". His effect treats the battle damage it inflicts as effect damage which should theoretically bypass the sword's downside and prevent it from popping itself.
Not gunna lie, when I first saw Axe of Despair as a kid I thought "Huh, so is it supposed to be an evil coconut axe?"
Before the new support came out my old Amazoness deck played Double Edge Sword cause attaching it to Swords Woman is a near OTK by itself

Yes, I'm noticing that now. I thought it was just another treeborn frog in the background, so we were so distracted by the rest of the art, we didn't think about that! If the Volume 2 of this topic gets support, I'll bring that up in the honorable mentions of that video.
I remembered when I started getting back into yugioh and was buying any card pack I could get I thought of a strategy using omega goggles with a monster that destroyed certain cards in the opponent’s hand thinking it was some great combo,but of course even if did do said combo it would realistically only work once
The fun of Yugioh is sometimes having that very specific 2 card combo that takes about 20 duels to pull off, but is super fun the one time you can do it!
Double Edge sword can be attached to OPPONENT'S MONSTERS, then the Mikanko monster can attack it and make the opponent take the battle damage TWICE.
8:35 actually, Toad is 3 frogs. The first is the only one capable of movement. The second eats the negative emotions of the bottom frog. The last frog disguises itself as an orange while it sleeps. Pray it never wakes up

I need Pikeru's goat, hat, and the big lolipop monster (kanchome's non duck relative maybe) as separate cards.
I use Horn of Light in a deck, it's hard to use but I still like having it in combo with Chorus of Sanctuary
I used vicious claw a ton in a ritual demise deck. Attaching it to Ruins r10 meant they had to out damage her or banish her since she is protected from destruction effects. She can also attack twice so that becomes 6200 damage easily.
Often times if I had ruin and demise on field at the same time I would wipe the board, attach claw to ruin. Then attack with Demise and ruin x2 to Otk.
Since I used it on Ruin the tokens were never an issue because she has double attack and piercing damage so it has saved me a few times.
Maybe the next time, you can do Union monsters. That type just died out
i think the stars in 'Prevention Star' are the monsters level stars protecting it since they look like negative images of level stars though these are just my thoughts

Trial of the Princesses lets you summon the "upgraded" versions from the hand as well, not just the deck.

So what would happen if you equipped Gravekeeper's Vassal with Double-Edged Sword?
Vassal says the battle damage it inflicts is treated as effect damage, so essentially it means it never deals battle damage, so do you still take the damage from the sword?
Diuble edged Sword is a OTK maneuver if you equip it on a 2k+ attack position monster and crash into it with a mikanko.
Best way is to kaiju the most dangerous monster from your opponent, give it double edge sword and crash 1 mikanko into it😂
Slap Double-Edgy onto a Vampire while you have Vampire's Domain on the board. Negate any damage you do to yourself.

Double-Edge Sword is annoying to deal with in Amazoness decks, as it has a monster that flip the damage you would've taken from Double-Edge Sword to your opponent...

I think that “All For Naught - Bubble Burst” has to make that list.
It reduces an attacking monster’s ATK by 600. Ok, that’s cool. And then, if the opponent controls a Spellcaster, it also makes one of their other monsters lose ONE MILLION ATK until the end of the turn.
Like, it could’ve just said “1 face-up monster’s ATK becomes 0”. But they just had to be extra (and thematically appropriate) by actually printing “1,000,000 ATK” on the card.

I have a theory about Trial of the Princesses and it’s that there not supposed to defeat the Giant but steal the ball hat he’s wearing and whoever gets it becomes the princess so its the hat being equipped
