One of the best bikes I ever had, easy to work on, very reliable, never let me down... the piston is huge, lol, the one you have is in mint condition, enjoy ❤

1974 Developed with the input of Mick Andrews, the famous OSSA rider. (As in OSSA MAR). These bikes were reliable but overweight and not competitive with the Spanish bikes, Bultaco OSSA and Montesa. That, combined with the fact trials never got super popular in the USA, led to many many unsold TY's. Yamaha had so many unsold TY 250's that they developed a "Trail" kit for them to make them a better playbike. A larger seat that snapped on over the trials seat and a peg relocating kit helped Yamaha sell a few. The TY 175 on the other hand was a much more competitive bike!

Great info, thanks! Wish I could get my hands on a 175.

1974 minimum. '74 was the first year of the TY, unless this is a prototype. I had a couple about 20 years ago, and just picked one up yesterday for a good price!

Had one brand new in '73. Unreal bikes, had so much low down torque, wish I still had it. Australian delivered, with the same yellow. They used to have a kick back on them when cold like a bitch..hahaha

They should make a 2 stroke gas and oil mix air freshener.

maybe loosen the screw on the points. then tighten it so that it is out of the way of the flywheel...get flywheel on, then rotate to use the holes to reset the points. set the piston to TDC. then set gap?...was long time since i did a yamaha..

really random question! the rear end of the torque arm on my ty125 has come off! any ideas on how to fix? do I need to fully rebuild the rear wheel?

There’s another video from Kaplan cycles and in it the fella who is an ISDE competitor from that era said they went from prototype in 1973 to production in one year 1974
    Is it for sale?
