I've eaten many of these over my career Emmy!!
Few little tricks picked up over the years:
    - don't use the bag for your juice. It's much better used as a dry bag to put your phone/camera/spare socks etc in!
    - we usually open the main pack, take everything out of the boxes and repack the main pouch then it can roll up about half the size.
    - each menu type is slightly different so we always swap things back and forth. Ie some come with jam some don't.
    - if you place the bread pack (bag of pain lol) in the hot water for a bit it will steam the bread a little inside and make it much more edible.

Emmy's always so optimistic, instead of being upset that the orange drink spilled.. she used it as an impromptu chance to try the napkin that came with the IMP (: I love optimism, I try to live my life this way! Also, a pig tailed Emmy is an adorable Emmy ^ _ ^

They made the same stuff for commercial same in the mid or late 80s. You could buy it at Loblaws, and the chicken a la king came with pasta in a mesh bag (like a giant teabag) so you could cook the pasta at the same time, in the same pot as the chicken and sauce.

I hated the cherry cake dessert when I was in. I found the main entrees fine.
Lasagna was the best with a Marage bar and chocolate sandwich cookies from Dare.

Please?I always thought chicken or turkey ala-king was served over noodles or potatoes but I could be confused lol! All in all it looked like a pretty nice meal for those serving their country. I hope you have some for the States. Maybe you already saud that. Sorry. I think its wonderful for civilians to know these things. To give a better understanding of all the little things these brave people sacrifice and to push for better and more filling when possible. Thankyou again Emmy!

    W00t Canada!!
I've eaten many of these as a teen in cadets although Chicken a la king was not one of the menu's back then. Also the company who made the main part of the meal I think was freddychef if I recall properly (long long time ago in the 90s :P )
Some of my favorites was sausages and hash browns (breakfast) , Cabbage rolls (lunch) Hungarian goulash and the chicken breast (it came in broth and you got a packet of stuffing to dump in YUM!
Back then the peanut butter and honey came in tubes and you could reseal it - I would eat peanut butter right out of the tube in winter as a snack to keep energy to stay warm! fond memories!

Magic Pantry used to contract to the CF as well way back when. The lunch and dinner entrees were also available commercially in the mid 90s, with "pretty" packaging under the FreddyChef and Magic Pantry labels. The commercial packages only had the entree, no sundries and no dessert, but had more flavor variety. One of my favorites was the Polynesian Chicken with Rice. It had a package of boil-in-bag instant rice that you were supposed to cook up before you headed the entree pouch, and then mixed it in.

I remember seeing this video when it first came out and since my father is in the Canadian military I was so intrigued that something I’d seen before in my house was being looked at. My brother and I used to challenge each other to live off of the boxes if we were ever left alone for long enough so I’ve had many of the different variations. 2 years later of left over boxes making their way into my basement pantry and I’m still loving this video!!

When I was a Cadet in the mid 90s, CF-issue mess kits were square, and the perfect size for 1/4" of lee-way for one of the IMP packets. We'd use a campfire, Sterno stove (I had a little square one that ran on solid fuel pellets that was small enough to fit inside my mess kit) or any other portable stove. The other option was to toss your IMP entree into the communal 20 gallon pot and let it cook for 10 minutes., because the water never did get to a boil. Back then my preferred IMPs were the Sausage and Hashbrown breakfast, Shepherd's Pie, Chili Con Carne, and Pork Cutlet in Tomato Sauce for lunch/supper.

I know this is really late, but we used to heat up our bread in the lot of boiling water too (before unwrapping). It really improves the texture! I remember it was through IMPs that I first tasted chilli, and cabbage rolls. Each year there would be a set of maybe 5 choices produced per mealtime, so if you were eating from a certain year you got the same choices again and again...but as a cadet we were given the old leftovers, so we got a variety of production years (not yet expired). We were always told to crack open the candy bar in half to make sure it hadn't gone off ☺

These MRE's need to reviewed for what they are. They are not meant to be a gourmet meal, so don't eat it thinking it is something it is not.
It is just meant to be a meal replacement in the field not fine dining.
If you get hungry enough, you would wolf it down and enjoy it.

    • @GrizzAxxemann
      @GrizzAxxemann 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It still has to be appetizing. If you gave anyone, even the most combat-hardened infantryman a steaming bag of what looked and smelled like dog shit, he'd probably opt to go hungry no matter how nutritious it might be.

Napolean knew the truth, 'an army marches on its stomach. ' This saying, which attests to the importance of forces being well-provisioned, has been attributed to both Napoleon and Frederick the Great. It is recorded in English from the early 20th century.

Emmy, well done this is a great video. It really shows the IMP in great detail. I've never been able to try one, I've mostly had British 24 hour rations and US MREs. Field rations are never going to compete with proper home cooking, but believe me, when you are out in the field and cold and wet and hungry, they are very welcome and much improved over the last 25 years. Great to see you are in comms with Gundog. Keep up the good work!
