We Greeks are used to large portions actually! Greek grandmas tend to feed us a lot! Like a lot a lot! Also we put tomato and oregano almost on everything!
Emmy, the green bean stew is a traditional Greek dish called fasolakia. The green beans are supposed to be soft, although of course the homemade freshly-cooked version is much tastier than the canned one. This is served as a main dish, although it often also contains pieces of potato, and, if cooked during a non-fasting period, may also contain pieces of meat. Just to put some perspective on the crunchy vs soft green beans issue, the first time I tried crunchy green beans I was taken by surprise, although now I have grown to appreciate them. To a Greek, crunchy green beans would seem undercooked, since we traditionally cook them until soft.
Cool! We also have this dish in Turkey. We have two versions; vegetarian, which is cooked with olive oil, and it is usually eaten cold. As well as the meat version, usually made with minced meat, and we can add potatoes too. I was wondering; do eat the green beans (without meat) cold too? I was kind of dying inside when Emmy heat it up :D
Thank you so much for making this point! I’d kill for some fasolakia, maybe not from a can, though. This is a dish that has as many versions as homes but yes, always “mushy”! :)

Yes all three cans contain food that is actually "traditional" in Greek cuisine. And yes all the meat is beef. You can buy these specific cans in supermarkets. Not expensive at all. Quality wise this company is one of the biggest in Greece. (now the army has to request portable feta rations to go with all these meals 😜)
Oh my God! My uncle used to work for the ZANAE company that produces these cans so I ve actually tried some of these cans. Not too bad considering it is canned food. Greetings from Greece! Love your videos!
For the non-Greeks, the packaging reads, in Greek: "green beans [in oil]," "beef with peas" and "beef with dried beans." All of these are what we call "λαδερά" in Greek, the word I haphazardly translate as [in oil], which involves stewing vegetables, often with meat, in a sauce that is primarily made out of olive oil and water, plus fresh tomatoes (or paste in the industry), onions and some additional stuff for flavour. They all have this notably orange colour to them from stewing fresh tomato in oil.
As an Greek Army brat i grew up eating these rations! And dad used to give me the napkins to have them in school and now as 20 year old that video reminded me of my childhood! ah! Great video though! Although you could have added some salt and black pepper in the foods and they would have been pretty great!
Emmy, you are the mother of every single one of your fans lol, you are very kind, forgiving, funny, and just yourself! Plus energetic about anything you'll be trying. Very open! Something we all need as a mother figure. So basically what I'm trying to say is, thank you for brightening our lives!
No, Emmy, the green beans are not overcooked as part of the canning process. In the Greek cuisine vegetables are indeed cooked until very, very tender. The very opposite of the Asian approach to cooking vegetables. Another effect of slowly cooking for a very long time is that the aromas of the herbs and spices used (olive oil, lemon, garlic, onion and fresh as well as dried Mediterranean herbs) are completely absorbed by the product - meat, vegetables, noodles, rice, whatever. However, we like them this way and fact is that they are much easier to digest this way. On the downside of course most of the non heat resistant vitamins are annihilated. In the Greek diet that is not a problem however, because it includes lots of fresh vegetables in divers forms of salad as well as fresh fruit as dessert.
I didn't know about the Greek style of cooking green beans but I knew that just canning green beans would not make them that soft. In the American South we have a green bean dish that is slow cooked with tomatoes, onions and sometimes bacon and it is just called southern-style. As a westerner I was horrified when I first heard about them but then I tried them. Yummy! I had suspected this was a similar dish.
In Europe, those are actually considered tissues to blow your nose, not napkins (when I first visited the US I was very confused by the flimsy thin and small tissues you had there too). Packets just like that have been the standard form to sell and buy tissues here for a long time (of course you buy them in bulk - around 20-30 such packets per package) - easy to carry around with you in a pocket or purse and resealable as you pointed out. In recent years, boxes of tissues have become more popular too for use in homes, but that's a comparably new development.
You can also buy only one pack, in Greece you usually buy just one pack from the "περίπτερο", basically a kiosk that sells cigarettes, ice cream, gum, newspapers, chips and all that kind of stuff.
Can confirm! In Finland we generally call them "nessu" after a popular brand, and it literally means a single-use paper specifically for blowing your nose... I had no idea there are countires which don't have this type of tissues... :D It's so so so common in the EU
Emmy, thanks for not editing out the random phone call, lol. It adds to the sense of just sitting there hanging out with you in your kitchen. Much love! ❤️😀
My uncle is Greek and his church hosts a Greek festival every year, and I've volunteered for them for the past two years, but there's this one dish that I can never get my hands on because it always runs out. It's called spanakopita, I believe, and it's a spinach and cheese pie. Maybe this year...
You have to remember a soldier ,tired and hungry under combat conditions would find a meal like this filling and a huge moral booster as well as replenishing their energy reserves .
All military M.R.E's should be relatively simple yet filling. Each member out and about is burning calories like crazy and needs good, solid fuel. Somewhat bland and hot will fill the bill for most. When you're out in the rain and mud, wich the Mediterranean region has plenty of you want simple, hot, and quick food to fill that hole inside of you.
For my military service I volunteered for the Greek Special Forces and the box with everything inside is quite accurate. Our unit had stocked up all these items, but due to economic reasons whenever we had training hours (or days) outside the unit, we were advised to go buy these stuff at the local supermarkets, they were not given to us except the unlabeled meat can which was horrible and no one wanted. We called that Godzilla because the meat was probably from the age of the dinosaurs. All the rest of the canned material is typical Greek canned food for holiday campers, very easy to find, there are also more tasty options like laxanontolmades or tomato meatballs all under the same brand. The crackers were also given for breakfast. Generally the Special Forces diet was very well balanced, with generous portions, only thing to be afraid of was bad chefs.
Seeing this in 2022... So what is the breakfast component here besides crackers? No grain or muesli? No jam or peanut butter? Do you eat the green beans for breakfast?
@@LymanPhillips The concept of breakfast in time of war is I would say, non existent. Remember, this is a 24h indicative survival ration kit. To address your question, a typical special forces breakfast included coffee, tea, milk with cerial, bread with butter, jams, honey, nutella to choose from and in the weekends occasionally pancakes. Rarely you would find also omellete.

I have found that if you need to use a chlorine type water purifier, if you can leave the water open overnight, most of the chlorine will evaporate by morning, and be much more palatable. I realize in many situations this wouldn't be possible, but it's a nice thing to know if you're able to do it. Sometimes our local county water is extra-chlorinated, I often fill a wide-mouth gallon jug, and put a thin cloth over the top to keep bugs and dust out. (I buy cheap nylon knee-high stockings to keep on hand for this type of thing, they stretch nicely over the opening and don't need a rubber band) The water is so much better the next day.
Here in Tennessee we cook canned green beans all day. Put some hamhock (or bacon or ham) in the pot, water canned green beans (we do 4 cans) and a bunch of tiny potatoes(or 1 can of potatoes if you don't have fresh ones) Bunch of salt and pepper and cook it for several hours, like 4-5 hours (don't let the water all boil out, refill with more water if needed...but if you do add little bit more salt if it tastes watery) Eat it with cornbread and it's a great dinner that feeds a lot of people.

I love your videos Emmy 💖 I’ve watched you for years and now I’m looking back while having a foot bath. I love how you are so positive and appreciate foods even though you’re not the biggest fan of the certain food. That’s really important.
Many other (mostly specific) NATO prefered them and would excange some for far more pricey stuff for some cans. Too bad there was no canned cheese shown. Tasty tbh but enough calories (fat) to raise two cows and salt to kill one more xD.
Oh :o I wish some day you can taste them in a restaurant. Some cans are nice, I don't know the brand that was inside the ration, it's probably military only brand. Love you Emmy
Ahri actually you can find this brand in supermarkets as well, though never this kind of canned full meals. You can definitely find their dolma cans almost everywhere 😃 And @Emmy ευχαριστούμε για το βίντεο!

When I joined Greek Special Forces I was enlisted in paratroopers so an elite unit like that had probably much better food than other units .. So first time I saw the MRE I said “Boy I don’t even touch it “ but after all that in a training session lasted 1,5 week only with combat equipment I didn’t only ate that MRE but I also loved it 😂😂😂😂
well tbh asfar as I remember this was also the normal army ration box. Maybe one less can? Other than that there was supposed tobe a vitamins tablet but she didnt found one.
Emmy, you can find these cans at Greek supermarkets. The company which makes them is one of the most famous Greek can companies with a big history. It's nice to think that Greek Army made a deal with a Greek company and not a foreign company 😊
Oh my god the memories... had a lot of those back in my SF days in Greece. They also used to contain a sachet of dried milk (flakes) but they removed them because snakes on rock islands and mountains were drawn to the milk scent at night when we were sleeping, eventually curling in the warm sleeping bag (non poisonous!) A difference I noticed is that the biscuits ("galeta" they are called) were 4 and quite big (rather than a pack of 6 smaller ones) and the pack also contained a tin of processed cheese.
Every time you crunched the plastic materials, my three guinea pigs started squealing for veggies. I love your MRE vids too, Ive watched all of them!! 🐹💜💜
Oh man now i want fasolakia. The green beans are meant to be cooked until soft. A really tasty meal with soft bread to dip in the oily stew. Highly recommend trying a home cooked version instead of a tin. As you say, the acidity from the tomato and that little bit of onion, usually with some potatoes, makes it delish
😂 looks all Greek to me. Meals looked pretty good to eat. You should buy a pair of the silicone mitts for handling the hot canned item. I use mine when I handle hot items that are wet like boiled potatoes.
You know whats funny? im Greek and my bf is American/Chinese so when he used the "Sounds Greek to me" sentence i was confused as heck until he explained what it means, but here in Greece we say "This all sounds Chinese to me" and it has the same meaning!
I love your videos.and commented many times The greek ration might seem "poor" compared to other countries But the portions are big! Something i would like to mention is that there used to be also Canned Cheese in there !!! But its missing..! Greetings from Greece
It sais . Greek army One individual portion...... Paackaged in 2017 Variety No1 : oily green beans , beef with peas , beef with beans . Nato approved. Information included.
Congratulations Emmy for yet another great video. Very good presentation. Since I have eaten both Greek and American MREs, and tried some other NATO during joined exercises, I can assure you that the Greek MREs are not only very delicious, but also much healthier than most others. All meals are Real UNPROCESSED food, not some preserved mixture warmed up in a plastic bag with same taste. Just a tip, we crack open the lid a little for warming. The company ZANAE makes exactly those meals for the civilian market, and everyone can get those same foods in a supermarket. I can even find them in international food supermarkets here in the USA. Now, IF they could package a fresh Greek village salad with feta cheese, and a souvlaki hot off the grill, it would be the most delicious food, but I guess these both can be enjoyed only fresh.
Late to the game but did your can heating up outside blow up? You should crack the lid of any can being heated over a flame to prevent it from blowing up or squirting out scalding liquid when you pop the top. You could place a small dish towel over the can before popping the lid to prevent getting squirted if heated too much.
I can constantly watch these MRE videos, you’re my favorite when it comes to these videos ❤️❤️ Keep doing what your doing, you’re bringing joy to so many people all over the world 🤩
So fun to watch!! I can not drink coffee with sugar and no creamer. I have mine with collagen, MCT oil, 1/4 t of karrygold salt less butter! Emulsify and yum! But, instant without cream can’t use sugar. 😁 ☕️ ❤️
Robert D, I thought the same thing. But since it didn't get really hot, just warm, it probably wasn't much of a risk. (I know Emmy's done this before) Still, she could get some fuel tabs that get unexpectedly hot, so cracking the seal on the can before heating would be a good idea. Never hurts to be cautious.
Emmy: Have you every thought about tag teaming a MRE review with Steve1989MRE? Both of you provide THE best MRE reviews on TH-cam and to see you both discuss the MREs and provide your expert opinion on a new MRE from the US, or UK, or France, or Iraq. That would be the bomb!!

@@Thessaloz I don't think there are so many Greeks of that size though, average height for men here is 1,77 if I recall correctly.
@@ioannavalathan9290 Its higher for special forces tho, and taking into consideration all the exercise, definitely not that big.
Hello from Greece!! 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 We love you ❤️
A bit burnt, but still friendly=ME
Liztopher same 😂
Liztopher I actually read this as she was saying it lmaoo
Liztopher That sounds like me. A little burnt, but still friendly. I must be like freeze dried coffee from a military ration. 😆
Same
Read this comment as she was making it.
Heyy I’m Greek!!! So honored for you to be doing this from our country☺️
No background noises, and her voice is really really relaxing, I love everything about this video
Iam still eating this stuff in KASTELORIZO gamw...
Υπομονή και κουράγιο αδελφέ.

Wow, the same island of "Mediterraneo"italian movie; we call the island "castelrosso" (red castle)
I love your videos Emmy 💖 I’ve watched you for years and now I’m looking back while having a foot bath. I love how you are so positive and appreciate foods even though you’re not the biggest fan of the certain food. That’s really important.
Emmy goes to Greece!! Never seen a Greek ration. Didn't look bad at all.
I'd eat the hell out of it tbh
Many other (mostly specific) NATO prefered them and would excange some for far more pricey stuff for some cans. Too bad there was no canned cheese shown. Tasty tbh but enough calories (fat) to raise two cows and salt to kill one more xD.
If it has a lot of oil its greek! We love you Emmy!! Σ' αγαπάμε Emmy!!
Emmy ευχαριστούμε for the video. We hope you enjoyed the taste of the Greek food.
I did very much - thank you!🇬🇷
Oh :o I wish some day you can taste them in a restaurant. Some cans are nice, I don't know the brand that was inside the ration, it's probably military only brand. Love you Emmy
Ahri actually you can find this brand in supermarkets as well, though never this kind of canned full meals. You can definitely find their dolma cans almost everywhere 😃
And @Emmy ευχαριστούμε για το βίντεο!
Ahri

This girl makes great videos out of a boring subject .... military rations! So cute, pleasant personality.
My dad was in the Infantry Army and i grew up eating this MRE rations and i loved them too!
Παμε ρε γκοτζιλα παπαπαπ
My father told me they ate only fakes in the military
Now i see how he gained weight when he came back from the military
Heyyy Greek Squadddddddd!!!!!
Great video!

I love Greece I love MRES and I. Love you! Perfect combination!
Emmy, you can find these cans at Greek supermarkets. The company which makes them is one of the most famous Greek can companies with a big history. It's nice to think that Greek Army made a deal with a Greek company and not a foreign company 😊
Ελα ρε 4β αθάνατη!!! Παντός παιδιά οι Αμερικανοί τρελαίνονται για 4β.. My love form Greece 🇬🇷 💕 💕 💕
Oh my god the memories... had a lot of those back in my SF days in Greece.
They also used to contain a sachet of dried milk (flakes) but they removed them because snakes on rock islands and mountains were drawn to the milk scent at night when we were sleeping, eventually curling in the warm sleeping bag (non poisonous!)
A difference I noticed is that the biscuits ("galeta" they are called) were 4 and quite big (rather than a pack of 6 smaller ones) and the pack also contained a tin of processed cheese.
Every time you crunched the plastic materials, my three guinea pigs started squealing for veggies. I love your MRE vids too, Ive watched all of them!! 🐹💜💜
I’ve been watching Emmy for a few years now and I still don’t know if she likes something or not based on her expression
I've noticed she likes things about 90% of the time. It seems like she'll eat almost anything.
She’ll normally say Not my Favorite when she doesn’t like something
The canned cheese burgers are a good example of such a moment.
This is alot of food λέει.

I love that you review MREs! Your channel is awesome. A little of everything.
My wife and I love your videos!!! It’s our nightly routine to watch you before bed! You’ve even convinced us to buy a few mre’s ourselves!
That's so sweet. Delighted that you guys watch me together - cute!

"It's absolutely lit"
Indeed. This video is lit 💃💃💃
Ended up watching one video of emmy last night having never watched her before. Not even 24hr later and I'm hooked. Love her.
I've been waiting for A Greek MRE. All I want to see is a Filipino MRE because my people don't get enough recognition as it does.
Antoine King I would love to see one too! Does anyone have one they can send to Emmy?
😂 looks all Greek to me. Meals looked pretty good to eat. You should buy a pair of the silicone mitts for handling the hot canned item. I use mine when I handle hot items that are wet like boiled potatoes.
You know whats funny? im Greek and my bf is American/Chinese so when he used the "Sounds Greek to me" sentence i was confused as heck until he explained what it means, but here in Greece we say "This all sounds Chinese to me" and it has the same meaning!
All GREEKS REUNITE ALL SHALL CAWER
I love your videos.and commented many times
The greek ration might seem "poor" compared to other countries But the portions are big!
Something i would like to mention is that there used to be also Canned Cheese in there !!! But its missing..! Greetings from Greece
Your MRE videos are the best on the internet! Please keep doing what you do, it always makes my day when I see you post a video!
Thanks for the kind words. 😊
Reminds me those cold nights we had on the mountains of Crete eating all these...Ah, so many memories in the Special Forces!
I'm from Greece and that looks so good. I need that in my bunker lol.
Emmy when we eat we say "καλή όρεξη "(kali orexi) ❤️

Greek army
One individual portion......
Paackaged in 2017
Variety No1 : oily green beans , beef with peas , beef with beans .
Thank you now I don't have to eat alone
🙌
Night Star I can't watch her while I'm eating because I'll eat so much more. So I watch her before dinner. 😏
Lala Booboo yes she does make me hungry lol
It's 2 AM in Germany and I've never clicked that fast before
Stellase das Enzym me too :)
Haha Same 😂 Just not tired enough to go to bed
Yay!!! Goodnight, Germany...or perhaps, good morning. 😴
Stellase das Enzym it's 7 right now in germany and I will watch her video while eating breakfast. 🎀
I've been waiting so long for this mre💕greetings from greece
Generous amount of contents, great package. 👍

Greetings from Greece Emmy!!!
My husband is from Florence Colorado! 😂 Nothing there but prisons and antique stores. 🤷🏼♀️
😂
What a lovely combination of attractions! Perfect for people with LOTS of time to kill.
Which one is he? Lol
Im just from Colorado 😂 so i was like “omg” when she said it
That's what I was about to say. Wonder if the prisoners are working as telemarketers?
Great video ! You should try food from Cyprus as well 🇨🇾
I sometimes just tune in to hear Emmi say " Hello my beautiful lovelies".
Especially if I'm feeling a bit down.
I love that part!!
green beans in Greece are made just like this. they are soft and we put a lot of oil.
please do a kitchen tour
Greek food is the best🇬🇷💙
I hope Emmy tastes more Greek food!
I've become addicted to your cuteness and now I have to watch Emmy every day to relax.
I have only been watching your videos for about a month, but I am really enjoying them. 👍
I’m glad I’m not the only one that says “I don’t know you!” when a random person calls me. 😅
Emmy why didn't you take my call? 😢😢😢
Greece is the word is the word that you heard, its got groove its got meanin'.
I can constantly watch these MRE videos, you’re my favorite when it comes to these videos ❤️❤️ Keep doing what your doing, you’re bringing joy to so many people all over the world 🤩
I love your ration tasting videos the way you describe the food is very professional like a food critic.
“Hardtack ocarina, for the win!” :P
Its soooooooo funny to see such a sweet person to eat the food that our army guys try to avoid so much!
Never get tired of the Mhmm hahaha
You have made me smile 😃, and you are very knowledgeable and curious on MREs , I have subscribed , thank you for adding to the MRE community
So fun to watch!! I can not drink coffee with sugar and no creamer. I have mine with collagen, MCT oil, 1/4 t of karrygold salt less butter! Emulsify and yum!
But, instant without cream can’t use sugar. 😁 ☕️ ❤️
I'm curious, but should you have opened the lid just a touch so you don't suffer from exploded can? Just saying I've seen it happen.
Rob from Oregon
Robert D, I thought the same thing. But since it didn't get really hot, just warm, it probably wasn't much of a risk. (I know Emmy's done this before) Still, she could get some fuel tabs that get unexpectedly hot, so cracking the seal on the can before heating would be a good idea. Never hurts to be cautious.
These biscuits was amazing..Still remember their taste
Emmy: Have you every thought about tag teaming a MRE review with Steve1989MRE? Both of you provide THE best MRE reviews on TH-cam and to see you both discuss the MREs and provide your expert opinion on a new MRE from the US, or UK, or France, or Iraq. That would be the bomb!!
Seagrave73 that would be so cool
Thank you for always cheering me up when I watch your videos, Emmy. 💚
Just discovered your channel. You are without doubt the best military ration demonstrator I have ever seen! Love your program! Keep up the excellent work! A new subscriber.
